How do you feel about the recent tendency in Strive to make almost all male characters more buff? I'm not talking Sol or Leo, but Zato and Axl became significantly more muscular, Chipp is ridiculously bigger than in his previous designs, and even Ky got kinda less skinny. Do you think it's because they are trying to pander to western audiences? I'm just dreading the moment someone like That Man or Testament is revealed to be all large and buff now.
I'm aware how some people feel about it, and I understand the concerns.
My take is that there are different kinds of muscles for different kinds of uses!
Just to give you a sliding scale:
Massive Muscles > Potemkin/Zangief/Broly/Berserker/Hugo/Waldstein/Iron Tager
This sort of "overblown" musculature is pretty common in fighting games, wrestling, and in rare cases MMA (mixed martial arts) and grappling.
Large Muscles > Sol/Ryu/Gouki/Geese Howard/Jin Kazama/Goku/Vegeta/Enkidu/Sin Kiske/Ryo Sakazaki/Terry Bogard
Despite it considered "very musculature" in terms of the arms and upper body, it's meant to emphasize the idea that the character puts lots of emphasis on melee (punching) and flexibility of the upper body.
Leo and Sol you'd expect to put the work in because of how much power they put in to their attack swings.
Lean Muscles > Basara the Executioner/Ky Kiske/Cloud Strife/ Carmine/Venom/Faust/Ragna=the=Bloodedge/ Jin Kisaragi/Johnny/Tachibana Ukyo/Dhalsim
I often call these "Cloud Strife Muscles", but it's more accurate to say they're akin to Ballet Dancer muscles, because of the delicate nature and movement involved with the characters.
It is said that having "thick muscles" can restrict movement, so individuals who put emphasis on speed of movement/ultra flexibility are going to put more emphasis on a body of this nature.
In the case of characters like Axl Low, Zato, and Chipp, while it is true that these characters started out as slender... you have to understand that there's a narrative going on from one fighting game to the next.
The main narrative is that these characters are "getting stronger" with each sequel... it's a very subtle concept to follow, but the idea is that they are developing their techniques, improving their fighting skills, and making more logical decisions based on their respective fighting styles.
Chipp, despite what you may think, actually has very powerful leg muscles, otherwise he wouldn't move as fast as he does.  At the same time though, he has to be able to use his upper body and arms to maneuver himself in the air or even throwing fast punches along with blade strikes to put the hurt on his foes.
Any time Chipp has to grab a wall, climb a tree, etc... he has to have the muscle power to support his own weight.  So those muscles aren't just for fighting, but for climbing and moving about quickly as well.
For Axl Low... while he relies on his defensive weaponry quite a lot, he has to have the physical power to throw heavy chains like his around, and even uses his weapon as a trap against some of the heaviest blows that most weapons probably would break under.
Imagine Axl trying to use his chains to block one of Potemkin's strongest punches... that's hard to actually imagine!  That takes a lot of movement and positioning, not to mention upper body strength to resist!
Okay... lastly let's talk about Zato.  Zato's shadow Eddie does most of the work for him (or so it seems at first)... and while you'd think that would mean he wouldn't be physically strong... you also have to understand the nature of his line of work: he's an assassin by trade.
Being an assassin doesn't just always mean having the strength to use any weapon on hand, it also means being able to take whatever surprise attacks you're given... poison darts, daggers, sword slashes, bullets, and other deadly attacks.
From that perspective, Zato's body is his own defensive mechanism, having muscles that can contort or tighten to protect vital points, having special body armor, and being able to remain flexible in any given situation is a staple for any stealthy assassin... and Zato is considered one of the world's deadliest.
Not only this, but Zato is fighting for two: his body is shared between himself and Eddie, so if Zato gets hurt, so does Eddie.  All the more reasons he has to be careful and protect himself physically.  Rolling with punches, being able to take huge impacts, or dodge things with precision.
Even if characters are portrayed as having "bigger muscles" than what you'd expect, each serves their own purpose in the animations of the character's actions.
Next time you stare at Sol's upper body, remember what he's doing every time he throws a Fafnir punch... he's throwing most of his upper body at his opponent in the motion.
That goes for other moves two, like Chipp's Banki Messai, or Axl's "Wild Hair" Instant Kill.  These attacks are something these characters put their utmost in to, that's why they do as much damage as you would expect!

Samurai Shodown New Character “Basara” Available Next Week, Trailer Released
Samurai Shodown New Character “Basara” Available Next Week, Trailer Released
Samurai Shodown gets a new DLC character on October 15, and it’s a good one. “Basara the Executioner” is finally joining the cast. Check out his trailer below.
Basara’s first appearance in the series came in Samurai Shodown III. He’s something of a madman–he laughs maniacally as he cuts his enemies to bits. That’s all right though. Every good fighting game needs a bit of a sinister, “edgy”…

Sengoku Basara-Danganronpa Crossover Execution Drabble
Falling from Grace
Tumblr media
It’s punishment time~
Under a blood red sky, Oichi is guided blinded folded and handcuff towards the hanging tree. Tears run down her cheeks, a little song escaping her as her captors taking her closer and closer to her doom.
Down with the Demon Queen…
They get to the base of the tree, where the nose is placed around Oichi’s neck.  Her song is cut short as the nose was tightened.  A stool is placed in front of her feet, where she was forced to step onto it.
…Her powers out of control…
The tree’s dead bark turns black, its branches transforming into shadowy ghost hands. They grab the executioners, throwing them crushing them, slamming them against the grown, throwing them to the side. Oichi’s singing changes from light and sorrowful to rough and demonic.
…That lead to her own self destruction!
The ghost hands finally grab Oichi, their creator and host, lifting her up in the air.  Higher and higher…till she is held above the earth’s atmosphere.  He gasps for air, unable to breathe…and then she is let go…
She falls straight back to earth, falling so fast that her fall continues to go to the center of the earth, until she arrives in the pits of hell.
