Aliens, definitely aliens!
The Soviet Bartini Beriev VVA-14, an amphibious wing-in-ground-effect aircraft designed to be capable of taking off vertically from land or water before flying like a regular airplane, first flown in 1972. Caspian Sea Monster.

Note
what's your favourite plane? i was recently made aware of the bartini beriev vva-14 and i'm sort of in love with her
Tumblr media
(bartini beriev vva-14, for reference)
depends. for an all-time favourite, honest, reliable, popular workhorse? the yak-9 or yak-3 series
Tumblr media Tumblr media
cheap, reliable, useful, good, and, also, totally sexy
but if you asked me for a totally actual-performance-doesn't-matter, just-whatever-you-genuinely-think-is-the-coolest, answer... mmmm...
Tumblr media
(avro canada vz-9 avrocar)
i just think if flying saucers were real, that would be so funny. shame it couldn't achieve nearly any of what it was promised to
though i also have a soft spot for this one, its very unfortunately polish origin aside (i'm allowed to say this i'm from there)
Tumblr media
(pzl.38 wilk)
it's just kind of cute. so tiny for a two-engine plane

Bartini Beriev VVA-14
would you say you agree ?
it was made to hunt nuclear subs during the Cold War and was supposed to have VTOL capabilities but the company that was meant to deliver the engines just pocketed the money and never delivered them, so it never achieved Sky Panini Status. very unfortunate..
Never seen it before but looks cool
This is an example of Soviet genius, an absurd design that never came to light because of greed

Bartini Beriev VVA-14 – How Many Engines?
Bartini Beriev VVA-14 was a vertical take-off amphibious aircraft (yes we are aware this seems crazy!). Designed to destroy the US Navy’s Polaris missile submarines, she was first developed in the early 1970s. However, like many unusual Soviet designs, ultimately it led to nothing other than an expensive waste of money. For more information visit planehistoria.com
