Slowly making progress on my piece for the #CudworthBunnyTrail 🐰 I started by wanting Gary (my Bunnys name) to simply resemble a page of doodles. As i've gone on, and experienced the same ups & downs as i'm sure everyone has in lockdown, it has ended up being a sort of homage to my hometown. I keep thinking about my Family, and all of the local places that have meant so much to me as i've grown up. Looks and Smiles - Ken Loach (1981)

A disadvantaged young man tries to get by in Margaret Thatcher's England.

Old Ken apparantly dislikes this film, and views it as a failure because it doesn't/didn't fill the audience with an overpowering political rage at the conditions it presents. I personally see that as it's greatest triumph. This is pure cinema, presenting a time and a place in all its raw honesty. Brimming with character and not bogged down by a need to preach at us, it lets us decide how we want to feel about the state of Sheffield and its young people in 1981; like true cinema should.

Gorgeous cinematography highlights the beauty and grimness of a dwindling industrial cityscape, and unpolished casual performances bring that city life to...life.

Ken's best bar Kes in my opinion.

Narra la historia de un pobre chaval marginal en la Inglaterra de los 50, cuyo único motivo para no caer en la delincuencia es su querido halcón, Kes. KES 50 print available in my store. http://www.patrickmurphystudio.co.uk/product/billy-kes-print-kes-50 This print was created to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Barry Hines’s novel ‘A Kestrel for a Knave’ published in 1968 and the subsequent film ‘Kes’ directed by Ken Loach and released in 1969. The artwork is inspired by Billy’s passion for flying Kes (Billy’s name for the bird) it represents the moment of freedom for both of them when Billy swings his lure and Kes soars and swoops, a perfect metaphor for freedom and refuge from a life of neglect and abuse . In the book, when Billy is flying the Kestrel he is so absorbed in the moment of observing the birds freedom and grace that the moment is described as an 'envelope of silence' a pause from his daily worries. This is early development work to capture this moment, a boy and a bird sharing their freedom together.
