“ZEN AND THE ART OF SPORTSBALLING?
Here’s a topic you won’t often see in a pantheism group…When Justin Tucker, arguably the greatest kicker in the history of American football, nailed a game-winning field goal for the Baltimore Ravens yesterday, he extended a streak of now 61 straight successful field goals in the fourth quarter and overtime. He is 17 for 17 in his career on attempts in the final minute of regulation.
For those who aren’t familiar with the sport, those are obscenely good numbers that indicate absolute peak performance when the pressure is highest. No one has achieved this level of mastery in Justin Tucker’s trade.
So why does it matter to us? This quote offers a fascinating peek into the mind of the GOAT 🐐
“What matters in those 1.3 seconds between snap, hold and the kick, are the things that are going to help the kick go through the uprights,'' Tucker said. ''My feelings, my emotions - for 1.3 seconds, they don't really matter, whether I'm feeling very confident or nervous or even outright afraid. That's partly why I always make it a point to say a brief prayer as I'm lining up to kick - not to ask for results, but to ask for peace and to show gratitude just for sort of being able to be in that moment.''
We love to make fun of petitionary prayer, and rightly so because dualistic theism often makes it downright cringe. But that’s not what this is. It’s not, “please God, help me make this kick so we can win the game.” It is a prayer for peace, inner calm, quietude of the emotions that cause turbulence in the mind-body by separating winning from losing…and most of all, gratitude for the moment.
Centering prayer, it is often called.
One mustn’t pray *to* anything or anyone in particular to do this. The only definitive method is to use words (or focused silence) to channel one’s attention out of the ego, into that greater sense of self that is known by so many names but is “centered” in your innermost experience. In that stillness, the body relies on muscle memory and the task is done without a doer.”

Songs for Halloween Parties
Halloween parties offer the most wide open subject possibilities of any type of celebration. Halloween is the one day of the year that lets you be any living thing or dead thing, any occupation, any human or non-human and any personality type. You can be a cartoon character if you like. Since Halloween can go hundreds of different directions, the playlist will likely be a diverse list of novelty songs. Amanirenas: the One-Eyed Queen Who Fought Rome Tooth and Nail (c.60 BCE - c.10 BCE)
Okay, for real - I know few of you read the footnotes, but there’s a TON of nuance to this, so please read the full entry here before penning notes of inaccuracies.
Book here. Patreon here. Art notes behind the cut.
Art Notes
The art notes are pretty much all in the footnotes, honestly! Amanirenas’s outfit is a stripped-down version of her carving. It is more likely she would have worn something like a leopard pelt, but I liked the design so much I ran with it.
Kush had cool little pyramids that survive to present day, so I sprinkled them throughout.
It is unbelievably exhausting covering anything even tangentially related to Rome (or WW2), due to the preponderance of armchair historians. Gets even more exhausting when you cover non-Western points of view.
That blue-eyed elephant is named Jumbo. Totally legally distinct.
Shout-Outs
Good showing this time! Most popular incorrect answer was “Nefertiti.” Also, some people just said “Candace,” which… there were a ton of em. :)

Will provide hint tomorrow or day after — my books are getting packed away while I move, so I need to see what’s at the library.

SOB 17 Season 2025 Week 5 Power Rankings
*These Rankings are based mainly on the current season, however reputation from previous seasons does have influence*
1. New England Patriots (4-0)- I fully expected the Pats to at least have a competetive game versus Atlanta, but it didn't go that way, quite the opposite as NE shut them out 25-0. Buffalo isn't looking like they're much of a threat to NE this week either so looks like more of the same in New England.
2. Miami Dolphins (4-0)- It feels almost disrespectful to put the Fins at this spot since they haven't lost a game yet, but the way the Pats have been just a dominating force I had to drop the Fins a spot. (Although I'll probably regret it later)
3. New York Giants (4-0)- The Giants continue to roll winning 52-10 against Denver, and continue to apply the pressure to the rest of the East to win and catch them. They'll now get to enjoy their 4-0 start as they rest up on a bye before participating in a highly anticipated rematch against the Eagles in week 6.
4. Tennessee Titans (4-0)- The Titans pull out another close game in Indy, they seem to be mastering the art of finishing games strong, all four of their wins have been decided by a mere 6 points or less so far this season. Next up: Oakland Raiders
5. New Orleans Saints (3-1)- Saints got a win on MNF against the Cardinals and continue to roll through any team that's not the Atlanta Falcons.
6. Cincinatti Bengals (2-2)- Bengals bombarded the Bills 43-15 and pull back to .500 after starting off 0-2. Interesting start for the Defending Champs, but still have 12 games left.
7. Philadelphia Eagles (2-2)- I think it's safe to assume the Eagles are back to chewing bubble gum and kicking ass, and they're all out of bubble gum.
8. Atlanta Falcons (3-1)- I had the Falcons up there within the very top teams last week because I thought they were able to compete with anyone, they would still be up there if last week's game was competitive, but 25-0 speaks for itself.
9. Jacksonville Jaguars (3-1)- Jacksonville pulled out a good game on SNF in Oakland it wasn't the most ideal game, but a win is a win.
10. Pittsburgh Steelers (3-1)- The Steelers bounced back this week getting the clutch OT win against the Vikings. If there's times you want your Defense to stand up and it's time like those, and that's what happened for the Steelers last week.
11. Oakland Raiders (2-2)- The Raiders lost a game that really could've went either way it just went in favor the Jaguars. Traveling to Tennessee won't be any easier though.
12. San Francisco 49ers (2-1)- 9ers rested on a bye this week and will now face a hungry Atlanta Falcons team. Hope they're prepared for cause if not it Falcons may pour it on.
13. Kansas City Chiefs (2-1)- Chiefs also rested on a bye as they'll get the Cowboys this week and look to leapfrog the Raiders in the AFC West.
14. Detroit Lions (2-1)- Lions the third team in a row on the rankings to have a bye the previous week and look to gain momentum versus the Ravens this week.
15. Indianapolis Colts (2-2)- Colts lost a tough nail biter at home against the Titans on a last second field goal and drop to 2-2 after starting off the season 2-0.
16. Green Bay Packers (3-1)- If the Packers beat a team in the top half of the rankings they will go up, it feels disrespectful to put a 3-1 team this low, but until they beat a team in the top half of the league they'll remain in the middle.
17. Washington Redskins (2-2)- Redskins lost a tough game versus Philly after beating them a couple weeks ago, they were also 2-0 at one point and have dropped to 2-2.
18.Houston Texans (1-3)- Texans get in the Win column with a win against San Diego and look to try to play catch up in the AFC South.
19. Los Angeles Rams (2-2) Rams got the 5 point in Seattle and look to continue the winning this week against the Vikings.
20. Minnesota Vikings (2-2)- I almost had the Rams and Vikings in each other's spots then, then I saw that they're playing each other this week and I expect the Rams to win that matchup so I had them a spot ahead of the Vikings.
21. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2-2)- The Buccs got a win and rose 4 spots and look to keep winning to try to catch the Saints and Falcons.
22. Carolina Panthers (2-2)- The Panthers are in just about the same boat as the Buccs, or exactly the same boat.
23. Denver Broncos (1-3)- The Broncos still get respect for upsetting the Texans in week 1, other than that there's not much that seperates these 1-3 teams.
24. Arizona Cardinals (1-3)- AZ has got to get something rolling so they can catch the 9ers cause if not they'll be sitting at home come January.
25. Seattle Seahawks (0-4)- Seattle is ahead of some teams without winning a game because of their potential, they have the means and ability to succed, they've just yet to put it into a win this season.
26. New York Jets (1-3)- The Jets have now dropped 3 straight games, nothing really positive to take out of that..
27. Baltimore Ravens (1-3)- Ravens just don't have the pieces to compete on a consistent basis right now and are a team almost complelety lacking drive to win
28. Cleveland Browns (1-3)- It's a little too early to tell, but the AFC North seems like it's gonna be a two horse race again this year as the Browns nor the Ravens have the ability or leadership to overtake the Bengals/Steelers.
29. San Diego Chargers (0-4)- The Chargers at least have the postivie to look at a young developing Quarterback to potentially help them win games this season, cause it doesn't look like it's happening this season.
30. Dallas Cowboys (0-4)- Dallas suffered another loss to the Packers and fall to 0-4 a nearly impossible hole to climb out of in the East.
31. Buffalo Bills (0-4)- Buffalo also falls to 0-4 which makes it almost impossible for them to climb of the hole in the AFC East
32. Chicago Bears (1-2)- N/A
