For a while now, physicists have been hunting for primordial black holes, exotic objects that could have formed in the early Universe and spawned a whole range of cosmic shenanigans.

Using a giant 8.2-metre-wide (that’s 27 feet) telescope, physicists from the University of California, Los Angeles, and the Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe in Japan are searching for signs of these objects; discovering them could even suggest our Universe was breeding baby universes when it was a wee youngster itself.

Given enough of a shove in any one area, that concentrated sea of light could tip over the edge into a singularity. And because conditions were already extreme, the amount of mass required would be far below that needed for even the smallest stellar black holes.

Primordial black holes are interesting ideas in desperate want of solid evidence. Unfortunately smaller holes would have long since evaporated in a puff of Hawking Radiation. And anything large enough we’d surely have noticed by now.

But there are possibilities researchers have yet to rule out.

In this new model, the team returned to a theory where quantum effects in empty space could create something of a vacuum bubble, providing a seed for collapse.

Their maths shows these conditions during a period of rapid inflation could reasonably create primordial black holes of a range of masses. Interestingly, some would match what we’d expect of dark matter.

It’s an old idea that’s been kicked around for a while, to the extent that it’s looking increasingly unlikely as a candidate. If a population of these itty-bitty black holes does behave like dark matter, it’ll probably only account for a proportion of it.

Just to add to the scepticism, the method the team wants to use to search for these objects has also been attempted before.

Last year, researchers used the Subaru Telescope’s Hyper Suprime-Cam to collect nearly 200 snapshots of our neighbouring galaxy Andromeda over the course of seven hours, just to see if a PBH with the mass of our own Moon might float by.

Aside from a single ‘maybe’, the experiment didn’t find anything overly exciting.

But with this new model, the researchers argue if we wait a little longer – like around 88 hours – we just might get lucky this time. Or at least rule out their prediction.

Identifying a primordial black hole of this size would provide cosmologists with an object that could help to explain a range of perplexing problems. Not only might it contribute to our understanding of dark matter, their collisions with neutron stars might explain fast radio bursts.

We might have already seen a smash-up between these light-weight black holes in a signature of a gravitational wave event that had all the hallmarks of a neutron-star merger, without the flash.

Do You Need a Dedicated Baby Monitor?

Your baby needs constant attention, but you can't be in its room every hour of every day. That's what https://babymonitorshub.com are for. What started as audio-only infant care devices to let you listen in on your child from another room, have since added video cameras and connected features to the mix so you can always keep an eye on your little one. There are still some great audio monitors out there—here we're focusing on models that also provide some form of video feed.

Most connected baby monitors are effectively just home security cameras, like the Nest Cam Indoor—devices that let you watch another location with color video, night vision, and sound, so you can tell if anything is amiss. Because baby monitors are used to keep an eye on your little one rather than on your home and property, they prioritize different features than security cameras.

From a pure imaging standpoint, night vision is vital for watching your baby sleep from another room, and is standard for most baby monitors. Motorized pan and tilt (which lets you swivel the camera from afar) isn't quite as common, but is very welcome if you have a toddler and want to scan an entire room. High-definition is a nice plus, but you don't need the highest-resolution sensor to keep tabs on your baby—most of the monitors we test use 720p cameras rather than 1080p.

What Should You Look for When Buying a Baby Monitor?

Watching your child from moment to moment is far more important than going over footage from previous nights, so baby monitors don't usually make a big deal about saving video for later, whether using built-in storage or through a cloud service. They can take snapshots and short clips when they detect movement, but they don't offer time-lapse videos of entire nights, or let you page through hours or days of footage. Those features are useful for identifying burglars, but they don't really help you watch your child unless you're in a Paranormal Activity sequel.

Instead, baby monitors offer more options for letting you know when something might be wrong at that moment. Temperature and humidity measurements are common among high-end monitors, along with alerts and notifications for when movement or a lack of movement is detected.

Many of the baby monitors we've tested are internet-connected, letting you watch infant with your phone or tablet through an app just as if you were checking a home security camera. Because of this, you might not actually get a standalone display to go along with the camera. They aren't out of the question, however; some camera-only baby monitors offer viewers as an add-on or in a bundle. And if there aren't any available, you can simply get an inexpensive tablet like the Amazon Fire to use as a dedicated viewer.

Are Baby Monitors Safe?

As with any internet-connected device that watches or listens to your home, it's not out of the ordinary to be somewhat wary of a smart baby monitor. All Internet of Things (IoT) devices are potential soft spots for hackers to monitor you. Anything you network can possibly be compromised, and while you shouldn't be afraid of an epidemic of camera breaches, you should always weigh the convenience of these devices against the risk of someone getting control of the feed.

If you want a connected baby monitor or home security camera in your home, at the very least you should diligently keep its firmware updated, along with your router's firmware and security features.

Baby monitors are just one way to keep track of your little one. The Hum of Night || Snapshots || Lexus + Cameron Selfpara

The darkness of the night finally began to lift, hinting at the dawn of a new day as Cameron slowly, silent like a mouse, slid open Charles Forrester’s desk drawer. The drive back to Thornewood had been sleepy, saturated in content silence. After a night of freedom, returning to the hospital seemed like a fate worse than death, harsh reality snapping into focus as they rounded the last corner and bright headlights shone upon the large family estate. Most of the windows were dark, which meant they hadn’t raised suspicions, an eerily quiet building awaited them. The silhouette of an unrecognizable figure occasionally passed through a window every so often, most likely a guard doing his nightly rounds. Turning to face the woman dozing in the passenger seat, Cameron let out a gentle sigh, lips upturned in a lazy smirk as he admired her features, unwilling to disrupt her peaceful slumber. Killing the engine, he leaned across to cup Lexus’ jaw, the pad of his thumb cascading across her prominent cheekbones as her eyes fluttered open. “I love you.”

Parking Lot ; 9PM (photo 1)

Cameron leant against the hood of Charles’ car, cigarette in hand and smoke swirling through the cool air surrounding him, pavements decorated with pumpkins and spooky decor hung from every post and pillar. The awe-struck smile never faded from either of their features as they basked in their newly found freedom. One size twelve stepped in front of the other, approaching Lexus and wrapping strong hands around her waist. “Hey, beautiful.” He murmured in her ear, his lips moving to line a path of delicate kisses to her neck. A simple distraction before lifting her up onto the hood of the car, positioning himself between her thighs to carry on the intimate moment. Reluctantly, he pulled away, prying himself away from her open palm, desperate to grasp a fistful of his jacket. Oceanic hues glided over her frame, realizing this was a moment he needed to capture. The beginning of their night together. “Wait, stay there,” His teeth pulled at his lower lip in concentration as fingers reached for the Polaroid camera and took a step back. Bringing the camera to his face, he could already envision the photograph on his bedroom wall. Lexus posed on the top of Charles’ car, like she owned it.

After what felt like hours of trailing around the fairground, there was only one ride they hadn’t been on yet. The Ferris wheel stood proud in the centre of the fair, the warm glowing lights clinging to its frame could be seen for miles and Cameron was itching to take Lexus up. It was easier than convincing her to go on the roller coaster — even the baby one. Adrenaline coursed through his veins as he took her hand, pulling her towards the crowd, an endless line had been growing through the night but, in the final hours of the fair, seemed to be dying down. Cam shot his signature smirk over his shoulder, “We’re going on that!” He excitedly pointed up towards the large, spinning wheel. The camera that hung from his wrist screamed for a photo, capturing the purple haze illuminated the night sky behind the ride as the air shook with electrifying excitement, although that may have just been sugar induced screams of hyper children.

The Apothecary Bar; 10PM (photo 3)

It wasn’t comfortable, or comforting, standing in the middle of a sweaty, over-crowded dance floor. There was a strange sense of togetherness in it—a mass of bodies moving together to the beat of the same song, but he yearned to be alone with her. Eyes transfixed on her hips moving in ways that made his throat dry. Fingers skimming the soft skin peeking out from underneath the shirt gently riding up to expose the dip of her hips, Cameron felt the pull, the mesmerizing movement of her body suddenly moving him. Pulling her flush against him, his lips caught her earlobe, nibbling gently until her face flushed, as if on cue. “You’re beautiful,” He murmured, the weight of his words heavy in his chest. Hands intertwining, she incoherently mumbled her thanks, fingers squeezing his in a silent plea not to push her too far. “You’re breath-taking,” The light in her eyes said she meant it, as he chuckled in her ear. It wasn’t the first time that night he realized how lucky he was, but the sound and sight of her in the middle of a sweaty bar with punny cocktail names became etched into his memory forever.

“Come here,” A silky tone beckoned from the shadows, the soft but firm pull of his hand forcing his feet further into the darkness. Pale blue eyes absorbed her moonlight glow, the deep brown hues flickering with the promise of mischief. The crisp sound of corn husks crunching underneath his feet grew quicker with each step until the two broke into a sprint, allowing the maze to envelop them. He ran faster, not wanting to lose her. She ran weightlessly, feet hardly touching the ground until she finally disappeared into thin air.

“Lady…” Peeking behind a clump of husks, desperate eyes searched frantically. Stony fear crept into his chest with each passing moment he failed to locate her, but it wasn’t like him to show such a lack of composure; devilish grin pulling at blood-red lips. “Lex!” Unable to stifle her laughter, muffled giggles gave away her location. Circling around her back, Cameron leapt into the off-beaten path, arms firmly wrapped around her waist as she screamed. A chuckle rumbled through his throat as he pressed a kiss to her cheek, the flash of the Polaroid being taken enough to jar her even further as he smirked, burying his face into her hair.

“Cam!”

“I love you.”

Charles Forrester’s Office; 5AM.

Fingertips slipped the photo gingerly into the drawer, almost sad to part with it. It wasn’t anything special; their bodies hidden to disguise their identity. Just a Ferris wheel. Just down the road. Just enough to stump the stubborn man that was Charles Forrester. The thought of the man’s face becoming red with rage was enough to make Cameron smirk.

“Have fun with that, asshole.” Door clicking closed behind him, he felt renewed. No one would keep him inside for so long again. Next time Lexus asked him to get her out of here, he would. Consequences be damned. They were never going to live in a cage again.

ok im finally doing this. hello! my name is cam and this is my beautiful baby girl, fleur. i love her so much. here’s a sort of quick intro to her!

background/personality:

fleur is A Good Girl but maybe not A Good Princess. she’s pretty excitable and ditzy and hasn’t really Grown Up yet.

that doesn’t mean she’s innocent however. she’s not a child!

because of her upbringing, she knows how bad people and the world can be. her father is... the worst, and abused her. i won’t get into any of the gritty details of the abuse here except that it was emotional, physical, and sometimes worse. her father is just awful. let’s leave it at that.

she has ptsd because of the abuse but that’s not known to anyone except probably lucas.

she’s just... very optimistic, even when she probably shouldn’t be. whether that’s good or bad is up for your own judgement. but for her, it’s her way of coping with things. be cheerful, be happy, smile, even when everything feels bad.

thankfully, her whole family isn’t awful, and she has her big brother lucas to protect her, or at least try his best to. while she appreciates it, sometimes he can be overprotective and it makes her a little frustrated. though, most of the time, she just greatly appreciates being cared for. she loves him a lot.

she’s actually fairly excited about the betrothal. she has the belief that this could finally get her away from her father for good, and that her marriage will effectively save her.

while she is nervous about... everything that comes with it, she’s mostly optimistic because of that reasoning.

fun facts:

she loves flowers of all sorts. due to her name, she just felt naturally attached to flowers. her favorites are roses and lilies.

she really likes to take walks, bike, garden, and people watch. she’s a very simple person.

she has a bunny at home named rosie and she loves her so much... one of her biggest comforts

Die nächste Generation Kameras

Das Heim mit einer Videoüberwachung ausstatten ist ja das Eine. Die neue Generation von Geräten können aber mehr und lassen sich auch mit Alexa und Google kombinieren. Was bedeutet das genau?

Die Gründe für eine Überwachungskammera sind vielfältig. Solche Cams werden heute zu allerlei Zwecken eingesetzt. Sogar als Baby-Phone oder um zu schauen wenn der Paketbote ein Packchen abgelegt hat. Natürlich auch als Abschreckung gegen Diebe und Einbrecher. So long. Wer vor dem Kauf einer solchen Kamera steht hat verschiedene Möglichkeiten. Jedenfalls aus rein technischer Sicht.

Da gibt es solche Geräte, welche besonders für den Innenbereich geeignet sind, solche die für den Aussenbereich besser geeignet sind, welche die sich schwenken und drehen lassen um den Überwachungsraum zu erweitern und solche die auch Nachts gute Aufnahmen machen. Mit Bewegungssensoren sind viele ausgestattet und für den einfachen Heimgebrauch tun es schon günstige Modelle. Die Preisspanne geht da von ca. 30€ bis 200€.

Eine dieser Kameras viel mir auf und so habe ich mir diese AKASO Überwachungskamera einmal bestellt und wollte testen was eine solch günstige Cam taugt. Dabei ist die AKASO nicht das einzigste günstige Modell dieser Art. Laut Beschreibung bietet sie für den Heimgebrauch umfangreiche Ausstattung, jedoch sei dieses Modell hier nur als Beispiel genannt.

Und jetzt kommt der Punkt wo der Frosch ins Wasser springt. Leider war das mir gelieferte Gerät defekt. Zwar nicht äusserlich, doch offenbar gibt es da ein Software Problem, denn die Kamera ließ sich nicht verbinden. Rein nach der Leistungsbeschreibung bietet der Hersteller die Möglichkeit den Zugriff auf die Cam entweder via der eigenen App oder der bereits vielen bekannten Smartlife App herzustellen. Laut der technischen Beschreibung macht die Cam einen guten Eindruck:

Dabei soll die Kamera über die meißt übliche Full HD Auflösung mit 1080P verfügen und auch Infrarot (IR Array) LED/s für die Nachtsicht bis auf 10m. Natürlich läuft die Cam, wenn man sien denn einrichten könnte nur im heimischen Wifi auf 2,4 GHz, wie übrigens die meißten Wireless Cams. Doch bevor wir uns zu sehr mit diesen Details befassen hier der eigentliche Punkt warum ich diesen Beitrag überhaupt schreibe.

Es geht ja darum, dass die neue Generation der Überwachungskameras es ermöglichen soll sich auch mit Amazon Alexia oder Google Home/Assistent kombinieren zu lassen. Im Prinzip handelt es dabei dann um eine Schnittstelle zwischen der eigentlichen App Software der Cam und eben Alexa bzw. Google Home. Damit wäre es dann möglich das Bild der Cam auf einen Google Hub bspw. zu streamen und das einfach per Sprachbefehl.

Wer sich dies mal ansehen möchte findet dazu ein sehr gut gemachtes Totorial auf YouTube, gefunden [hier]. Auffällig dabei ist aber eine zeitliche Verzögerung im Fall der eingangs schon beschriebenen AKASO. Daher gilt beim Kauf auch zu testen ob bei der Wunschkamare ebenfalls eine solch ganz spührbare Verzögerung der Bildübertragung der Fall ist oder eben nicht. Aber eventuell kann man im Einzelfall ja auch damit leben.

Wer sein Google Nest System günstig erweitern möchte sollte sich einmal damit befassen eine Google Home fähige Kamera in seine Auswahl zu nehmen. Auch Google bietet dazu eine Lösung die speziell auf die Google Hardware zugeschnitten ist. Die original Google Nest Cams sind allerding deutlich tuerer. Zwischen 100€ und 200€ kosten diese Geräte. Wer nicht auf's Geld schauen muss sollte ggf. direkt zu einem dieser Geräte greifen und kann dann sicher gehen das es passt und auch der Google typische Service dahintersteht.

Auch wenn die AKASO ein schickes Design hat, so habe ich leider keine so prickelnden Erfahrungen machen können. Ob es nun nur an gerade diesem Gerät lag? Offenbar scheint die neueste Version der Smartlife App sich nicht mehr mit der AKASO zu vertragen. Daher gilt beim Kauf! Nur einen hersteller auswählen der auch fortlaufend und regelmäßig für wichtige Updates sorgt. Die AKASO Cam ging daher noch am gleichen Tag bei mir zurück. Jedoch will ich nicht gleich aufgeben, dass es auch günstige Lösungen geben könnte bei denen alles auch reibungslos klappt. Daher habe ich natürlich gleich eine andere Kamera bestellt. Ich bin gespannt ob die dann funzt.

Übrigens: Ich stehe überhaupt nicht darauf, wenn Hersteller nur um die gesetztlichen Anforderungen zu erfüllen eine Minii-Bedienungsanleitung mitschicken. Ebenso ein ganz großes Manko bei der AKASO war eben auch die mitgelieferte Bedienungsanleitung. Kurz es ist eine Frechheit. Die kann man eigentlich gleich wegwerfen, weil schlicht unlesbar klein gedruckt und selbst mit Lupe kaum zu lesen.
