The Bowser said that no Bowser can
ever go beyond the dark dark land.
"Why not? Why not?" "Because if you do
The Big Bad Plumber will be after you.
I met him once," said the Bowser.
"I met him a long long time ago."
Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson. Illustrated by Axel Scheffler
Age Recommendation: Pre-School/Kinder
Topic/ Theme: Friendship
Setting: A Windy/ Stormy Night
Rating: 5/5
This is just a lovely book it has taken me far too long to get around to reading. Room on the Broom is designed to be read out loud with the rhyming writing style. It has a lyrical feel. The story is one of friendship and sharing, with The Witch and her familiar making new friends as things go wrong during the night. Scheffler's illustrations are endearing and cute. He's made a choice to make The Witch somewhat unconventional. Witches in black are usually the ugly or the evil. The Witch is clearly not evil she is advocating sharing and friendship, for appearance is warted but smiley and with large swaths of colour. The animals (frog, bird, dog, cat) almost look wonderful. There is absolutely no realism involved and that is perfect. This is just a sweet book with a great message perfect for reading out loud to a group of kids or as a bedtime story.
If you've never seen it there is a film of Room on the Broom. It's on AppleTV, Netflix and if you are in Australia ABC iView has it for free on their catalogue. If you can access it, it's worth your time. It's adorable. If you need a reason to go and find it let me tell you the cast. Simon Pegg, Gillian Anderson, Rob Brydon, Timothy Spall, Martin Clunes, Sally Hawkins, and David Walliams.
This week's #FanArtFriday features The Gruffalo, from Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler's book of the same name. We'll miss you, Robbie Coltrane, who voiced the title character in the animated television film.

Red Star’s Ben Smith Talks Years of Cat-Tastic Animation
In 2004, Ben Smith and his late business partner Jan Rogowski started their production company, Red Star, with, in Smith’s words, “a combination of naivety and stupidity”… and a really specific niche. “We ended up making films for theme parks,” shares Smith. “We must have done 20 of those 10-minute-long animated films that they call […]

The Smartest Giant in Town
By Julia Donaldson
Illustrated by Axel Scheffler
MacMillan Children’s Books, 2003
I first read The Smartest Giant in Town to a group of six to ten year olds attending an English language summer school in Amman, Jordan. I knew nothing about it, other than that I had to interact with the kids while telling it, ask them questions, get them to guess what happens next…
