Vaniels won the last poll, but the other options hadn't been mentioned in it and the post also hadn't been tagged with them because I hadn't been aware of them yet, so it would be unfair to the people who like those versions and wouldn't have seen the poll in the search results... So here's another one to make it fair :)
Just goes to show that deciding on one shipname would be quite helpful for the fandom, not just to name my new blog but also so everyone knows what to tag and what to look for, without having to check so many name combinations it's hard to remember them all!
Feel free to reblog so as many people in the fandom as possible see this!

Taking Ava x Deborah fic prompts!
(also for my other ships as always, but the muse really seems to be partial to VanceDaniels atm so everything else might be slower)
You can just send me your own prompt, or if you like pick something from one of the prompt lists I've reblogged, just be sure to mention which list it's from or just send me the entire copied prompt instead of just the number, that's easiest for me :) also pls make sure to mention the ship in your ask!
No guarantees for if&when I'll write something for any prompt, I'm not a machine and the muse has to strike right and all, but I'm trying to pull myself out of writer's block and VanceDaniels seems to be the way for my brain to go Yes right now so chances are good :D and if you want to improve your chances above other prompts in my inbox, make sure to reblog some of my other Hacks posts or other things I made and/or comment on my fics (Ao3: lilolilyrae) and send your prompt ask off anon so I know it's you!
I also take prompts for moodboards and manips, less likely to fulfill any visual prompts as quickly as fic prompts though.

"The One, The Only" is such a fantastic name for the avadeborah breakup episode like, in s1e9, deborah tells that reporter that "a lot of people think [frank] started my career. he didn't, but we did start our careers together." so standing up there with the flashbulbs and champagne at the launch party for her special, looking out at ava being courted by network execs, deborah must be hyperaware that, if she keeps ava, she'll get smothered under deborah's star. she'd be "deborah vance's cowriter, ava daniels" instead of "acclaimed comedy writer/legend ava daniels, who once worked with deborah vance". so she lets her go (if you really love it, etc.), maybe the most unselfish act we've seen from her yet. cause if you really want to make it in showbiz, you can't rely on anyone else. you need to be the one, the only.

Once again with the Deborah s3xuality headcanons.
I have this theory that Deborah doesn’t sleep with strangers. Ever.
Part of it is because she and Ava are so frequently diametric opposites when it comes to aspects of their lives, as Ava is shown willing to have more one night stands. But the other part is because I feel like Deborah has such trust issues and such a fraught relationship with her s3xuality, that she doesn’t want to get into bed with anyone she isn’t familiar with.
I personally believe Frank was Deborah’s first s3xual partner.
The timeline would kind of add up. She must have met Frank anywhere between 18-21. DJ looks to be about 4 by the time Deb is 25, so she must have been between 19-21 when she had DJ. Pretty young, but in line with Baby Boomers typically having children in their early 20s. Not a whole lot of time for her to explore her s3xuality before she got married. Plus, her teenage years was likely taken up with taking care of herself and Kathy, so not much time to date. These are all just guesses though.
But if it’s true I feel like it would help explain why Deborah keeps sleeping with Marty. She doesn’t enjoy the s3x, so the question is why doesn’t she just go out and find a partner who will please her?
Familiarity.
She doesn’t have to be in a relationship with them or even officially dating, but she at least needs to have known them for a while.
Marty is garbage, but at least she knows him. I think Deborah has met all of her s3xual and romantic partners through her career. First, there was Frank. Then her gay ex-boyfriends were likely either fans of hers or other entertainment industry workers she met during her career. She met Marty because of her residency. Makes sense because Deborah doesn’t really have a life outside of work, so she looks for all her emotional needs within it.
She works so much, she doesn’t really leave time to meet other people. And even if she did, she has such trust issues, I’m not sure she’d be all that willing anyway.
So once again, let me put my rainbow tinfoil hat and say that Ava is literally the perfect potential s3xual partner for Deborah. All the pieces fit.
They’re connected through work which fulfills Deborah to be both loved as a person and as an artist. Deb has spent a lot of time with Ava enough to feel comfortable around her and actually enjoy having her around. Even better, unlike her previous partners, Deborah has been more emotionally vulnerable with Ava. Ava cares about Deborah and so would be sure Deb was always having a good time. Considering Deb’s attraction to men is, at best, questionable, there’s a good chance being with Ava would let Deb explore a previously repressed attraction to women.

Top 5 avadeborah moments 👀
I decided to go with some smaller moments for this because (of course!) the funeral scenes, 'I think she will', etc. rank highest for me, but they also get talked about a lot! So, here are some lesser talked about moments that I love:
1. “I really think you’d regret it if you weren’t a part of this, so just watch, okay? Please?”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think this scene often gets overlooked, but it's actually super important on the grand scale. For one, Ava calls Deborah immediately when she finds out about DJ's plans to get married. She's heard DJ and Deborah's complicated history from both sides, yet her first thought has Deborah's best interests in mind. Not only that, but Deborah immediately answers her call without a word, interrupting a hefty moment with Marty. Uh, what's that DWP quote? 'The person whose calls you always take--that's the relationship you're in'?
2. "I trust you. I do."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I quite literally don't have the time to get into this (because I could talk about it for the next ten years), but I'll never be over the fact that Deborah trusts Ava as much as she does. This woman hasn't put this much trust into someone since her ex-husband decades ago, but she now trusts Ava enough to reach out to her for real and actual comfort? She reaches out to no one else but her when she feels like she's on the edge of self doubt? It's fine.
3. "You think about me and I think about you."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This scene (rightfully) gets talked about a lot, but the shots used here are what really send me to the moon. Deborah's reflection in the mirror as Ava scolds her will live in my head rent free for the rest of my life. It's such a small moment, but she functions so internally here that I want to know everything she's thinking. Jean Smart Emmy WHERE?
4. "Hey, hey. Plenty of people can still hate you."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Holy god, I love everything about this scene. For one, Ava's staring at Deborah's mouth for most of it. Hello? But secondly, I just love the fact that Ava will do everything in her power to make Deborah laugh. At the end of the day, making each other laugh is their love language, and I just have a lot of Intense Feelings about it.
5. "What a weirdo." "Freak, yeah."
Tumblr media
I don't know why this part of the scene sticks out to me so much, but it's just so...casual? Like they've known each other for years? There's nothing about the way they lay or talk to each other here that in any way says 'this is a working relationship and we've only known each other a few weeks.' I just have a few questions.

Ok what is the shipname for Ava and Deborah from Hacks HBO? Either they don't have a really established one or I just can't figure out which it is, some votes would be really appreciated...
I'll probably make another ship themed art & manip archive blog & name it with the winning shipname here!

a scene where deborah sees ruby and ava interact and afterwards has a conversation with ava that goes like "you make her laugh a lot" and ava says "yeah" but she stares at deb and reads her like an open book so she adds "you know she's not the one who makes me laugh though, right?" and deborah rolls her eyes but ava can see the smile hidden in the corners of her mouth perfectly well

here is an avadeb ~drabble (1k) about ava wanting to protect deb from Men. it's not much of anything but it has the merit of existing so i thought eh. might as well share it, it's not doing any good sitting on my laptop.
Deborah is not interested in pity, and Ava doesn’t have any to offer. What she has instead is a dark awe in understanding her trauma and seeing how she's managed to live with it, and mostly, rage.
Deborah seems taken aback the first few times, like she can’t fathom someone feeling angry on her behalf for shit that happened so long ago, but she doesn’t seem to mind, so Ava tells her. That’s fucked up. He shouldn’t have done that. It’s awful that this happened to you. I wish I could bash his head in, I wish I could strangle him, I wish I’d been there to rip off his balls and make him eat the gory bits.
Deborah laughs dismissively but Ava is dead serious. She’s never understood the urge for time travel like she does when Deborah says, I was 23, I was 35, I was 47, and some man’s name that saw Deborah as an object to touch, to possess, to do as he pleased with. She believes if she wills it enough, if she lets the anger grow and grow, then she might wake up in 1974 one morning, ready to swing a baseball bat at any guy who comes too close to Deborah. She was never much of a fighter, but she could learn. She’d break Frank's nose on the night he met her, and one of his fingers every time he so much as glanced at Kathy. She’d make everything right, bloody hands and burst knuckles for Deborah’s safety.
But she always wakes up in the present, when it’s been years of Deb dealing with all that alone, and Ava curses herself for being too late to help. Yet another reason not to believe in God that she adds to the list: if she exists and decided to reunite Ava with Deborah after 70 years of struggle, when Ava can’t do anything about it anymore, well, fuck her and her cruelty. Who would have faith in a God like this?
If she could pick any moment in history to be born, she’d pick the same day as Deborah.
There's such a funny look in Deborah's eyes when she sees that Ava means it whens she says she would beat any man to a bloody pulp for her. There's exasperation, briefly, because Ava is young and passsionate but Deborah is perfectly capable of defending herself. Then, there's something else. It's a late-night work session again, and Ava is going to sleep over again, and they're a little drunk in the study once more. Sitting on the same couch, Ava's body is fully turned towards Deborah because she's listening to another tale of gross misogyny from the 80s. Elbow on the back of the couch, she's supporting her head on her palm, heavy-lidded and bone-tired. Maybe that's why she says it without an ounce of laughter, for once.
"I'd fucking kill him if I could."
Deborah's own laughter dies quietly as she studies Ava. It's silent for long enough that Ava would get uncomfortable if she was less drowsy and full of wine. As it is, she lets Deborah look at her without fidgeting.
"You mean that, don't you?"
And there, that face. Like Ava is indecipherable for the first time in her life. Ava doesn't quite get what's so incomprehensible about wanting to kill a guy who hurt someone you love. She nods in her palm, yawns with her eyes closed.
"Yeah."
When she opens them again, Deborah is still staring right at her, mouth is slightly-open now, and something about the whole scene sends an unexpected warmth down Ava's stomach.
"Why are you looking at me like I'm about to get eaten?"
She almost corrects herself by adding "like an antilope", once she notices how inapropriate that sounded, but thinks better of it. Let Deborah interpret it however she wants, she's too tired to pretend she doesn't find it hot. Deb raises one perfect eyebrow.
"Are you, now?"
Ava shrugs. She doesn't feel up for verbal sparring right now, she just wants a goodnight kiss on the cheek and to sleep for 10 uninterrupted hours. Deborah finally looks away from her.
"Thank you. For what you said."
Ava almost asks what she said, before she remembers their their initial conversation about that guy in 1984 putting his fucking hands where they should never have been. Had she been born at the right time, he would have ended his life with two stumps at the end of his arms. She aches for a knife again.
Something on her face must show that she's fantasizing about violent repercussions for crimes against Deborah, because she chuckles.
"What do you think you could have done, Mike Tyson? You have the hands but I very much doubt you have the force."
Ava gets offended in spite of herself. It wakes her up a little.
"First of all I absolutely have the force to go against any underdeveloped bitchass manchild any day of the week." No, she doesn't. "Secondly-"
"Oh God, there's a list!" Deborah interrupts with the face that says Ava's being ridiculous, but that she finds herself unexpectedly delighted by it. Ava's got to find a name for that face, it appears too often not to.
"Secondly," she insists, "I could go at it with a little finesse."
"Well, now I know you're bluffing. I've never seen you do anything with subtlety, much less finesse."
"Wh- I've got finesse coming out of my ass! I could do finesse all day!"
Deb laughs in earnest now, whole body moving with it, melting into the couch, and a fond smile settles on Ava's face. Lately she finds she's okay with being a little humiliated for Deborah's amusement. But she's also trying to make a point, so she waits until Deborah is done before she speaks again.
"I would have destroyed them for you."
Deborah takes her hand and squeezes gently.
"Well, when I think about those encounters now, I do sometimes picture you as this little... little creature, in my pocket or sitting on my shoulder maybe, livid with rage and putting curses on them as soon as they turn away." She shakes her head, like she can't believe she's sharing this. "My personal little feminist curse caster."
Deborah is laughing again, self-depreciating and a little exasperated at her own silliness.
Ava is gaping. She doesn't know what to process first: how similar their thoughts on the matter are, or how Deborah referring to her with a possessive pronoun made her want to kiss her so badly she barely just restrained herself.
Ava doesn't tell her about the time-travel fantasy, but it's the closest she ever comes to.

She doesn’t think anything of it at first. It happens so gradually, it creeps up on her like a tiny bug you can’t even feel until you accidentally snort it. Then you have to go to the ER to get that super hot doctor to tweeze “the biggest caligrapha beetle he’s ever seen” out of your nose, and you make a comment about how it’s not the only big thing you can fit in there wink wink, and there’s an uncomfortable silence for about 30 seconds before you apologize. It creeps up on her exactly like that.
At first, it’s all sarcastic and a frankly a little mean. It escapes Deborah when she’s laughing at Ava, or when she dismisses her. Whatever you say, honey. You don’t have to make that face, sweetheart. If you need to tell yourself this to sleep at night, buttercup.
She doesn’t even register them, it’s just part of the banter and another way for Deborah to ridicule her when their relationship is still mostly antagonistic. It’s patronizing, but not in a way that makes Ava want to crawl out of her skin to spit at whoever thought they could get away with not hearing her opinion about her agency as an adult woman. It’s patronizing in a Deborah way, and Ava quickly realizes that there’s a lot of stuff she lets Deborah get away with just because it’s her. Ava thinks it’s friendship, this willingness to make room for things you dislike because from that one person it’s just different. It’s not something she can remember ever doing for someone else, but it comes surprisingly easy now.
This friendship shit’s effortless, it turns out, except for all the efforts they both put in.
So they become friends, albeit complicated friends who are also a boss and her employee, and colleagues, co-creators, comedy partners, and roommates more nights than not. She adds to the list day after day, until she sits in the guest room that became hers in the past few weeks, and she thinks it can all be summarized by saying one simple thing that Ava is absolutely not ready to hear, but that her brain provides nonetheless.
Deborah is the single most important person in her life.
It’s quite early in the morning, and she was getting ready to walk down and eat her breakfast in the kitchen, but now she’s not so sure. She feels unsteady, although she supposes it’s really nothing new. Hasn’t she said to DJ all those weeks ago that her mom was her closest relationship? Only, at the time she didn’t expect it to last. It was a closest relationship for now, because the plan was very much to return to L.A once Deborah was done with the 2500th show. There would have been a lot of groveling for Ava to get a new job, and she would have developed new, less electric friendships. Just good ole regular friends you didn’t fight with every day, and friends you didn’t have sex dreams about, and friends who didn’t make you feel more alive just by walking into the room.
There’s no for now in her head these days about the importance Deborah has taken. Deborah is a huge part of her life, and there’s no end in sight. She doesn’t even want there to be an end.  That’s a lot of commitment for someone Ruby dumped for being a “self-centered hurricane”.
  *
She does end up at the gigantic kitchen island, because she can’t be having this epiphany on an empty stomach. She’s about to take a bite out of her almond-milk-soaked peanut-butter toast when Deborah walks in.
“Ah darling, finally awake! I almost sent Damien after you. You know how thrill his voice can get, I thought you’d enjoy that.”
Ava stays with her mouth open around the toast, milk dripping on the marble. Darling? Is this new? She knows immediately that it isn’t. She’s heard it before, countless times, but it never jumped at her until now. God, how long has she been non-ironic darling to Deborah?
“What? Is there something on me?”
Ava finally closes her mouth, only to re-open it in a display of stupidity no one has witnessed since they invented men.
"No, you look beautiful.”
Deborah is taken aback, of course, because this isn’t their script and even to her own ears Ava sounded disturbingly genuine. On the other hand, is she lying? Deborah always looks beautiful, all silk and loud prints and smiles. Ava doesn’t tell her enough because she thinks Deborah’s obsessed enough as it is with her appearance. But this is one time, and Deborah’s not going to suddenly call Seven Graces Surgical Center because Ava paid her a compliment. So hey, that was a mistake, but she’s ready to embrace it.
“Are you about to ask for a raise? Because I’m warning you, I won’t go higher than 5% until we’re done with the QVC season and have more time for promo shoots.”
“No I’m not asking for- wait. Can I ask for a raise? Yes, I want a raise. 5% is perfect.”
Deborah rolls her eyes as she fills a glass with water from the fridge.
“My god, it’s too easy. You could have asked for 10, you nitwit.”
Ava splutters a bit in outrage.
“Stop playing with me, woman!”
She’s left with the receding sound of Deborah’s laughter as she goes back to Marcus’ office.

something something about avadeborah and public performance vs. private intimacy, BUT the public performance turns intimate (ava is the only audience member who knows where that joke came from, what's the truth behind it and how it was crafted), and the private intimacy lets a fair bit of performance in (trying to one-up each other in their retorts, trying at all times to make the other laugh, the performance of laughter to hide/diminish genuine emotion)
