Week 1 Recs: One Shot, One Kill
The Week 1 Fic Rec Friday theme was "One Shot, One Kill," or fics that clock in under 10,000 words. Here are all the bite-sized fics recommended by the Yeehan community, organized by rating, then alphabetically by title.
General Audience
A Dragon's Treasure by SetsunaNoroi [5,958 words] Reccer comment: "It's a bit of comfort read; short, sweet, humourous, charming, and hits a lot of what I enjoy reading in a YH fic."
Hanzo can't help himself in developing feelings for Jesse McCree, but that doesn't mean he has to share them. With his sins, he is better off alone but still he can't help but want him. It should be fine as long as he just never says anything. Unfortunately his dragons have different ideas and keep trying to lay claim on the cowboy. Mostly McCree is just confused.
In Hot Pursuit by AsheRhyder [3,928 words] Reccer comment: "Loser man Cassidy fumbling the bag with Hanzo ft. Papa Reaps."
Cassidy can flirt, but he's never had someone actually take him up on the offers his silver tongue makes.
Hanzo is determined to win whatever game they're playing, especially when the prize is a flustered cowboy.
Gabriel and Jack just want to play cards.
To Grow Old Together (Is the Ultimate Declaration of Love) by PlanetaryRose [697 words] Reccer comment: "v short but v v sweet"
“I don’t just love you Jesse, I adore you, you are my heart but it is more than that. I want to spend the rest of my days with you, to grow old with you and have you forever by my side and in my arms.
You consume me in every way, mind, body, and soul. I would spend the rest of my days with you, dedicate my life to you.”
Teen and Up
Dreamlike by mataglap [4,063 words] Reccer comment: "4,063 words of achingly sweet fluff!"
Hanzo is used to bad dreams, and he never would have expected that a good dream would end up haunting him the most.
Finding Home, Building Home by coinin [1,975 words] Reccer comment: "rly sweet slice of yeehan, punches u in the face in under 2k words!"
It's taken a while, helped along by teammates, arguments about furniture, and quite a bit of cat hair, but Jesse's finally made a home.
Midway by robocryptid [2,329 words] Reccer comment: "2329 words that I go back to often because it hits a perfect balance between funny, sweet and romantic."
Cassidy and Hanzo go undercover at the fair to track a mark. Obviously they blend in best if everyone assumes they're a couple. It goes exactly how you think.
Silver Screen by DerpyMcButtface [1,990 words] Reccer comment: "Some people might hate me for recommending this one bc it’s SAD, but I really love the premise, and it’s VERY well written."
It's far, far in the future. The heroes are dead, old, or getting there fast. They're making movies now, about Overwatch, but not everyone's happy about that.
Mature
All the Love You Ever Get by SaltCore [3,387 words] Reccer comment: "3387 words to make you cry (mind the tags!)"
Some carry the last words they'll ever hear their soulmate say like a brand on their skin. Whether it's a blessing or a curse is for the philosophers to decide.
Hanzo, for his part, would rather fate had passed him by instead of leaving her mark.
Electric by mataglap [2,212 words] Reccer comment: "Caught up in a thunderstorm, gets spicy"
They get caught in a storm. Things get slightly out of control.
Fire from the Gods by Adolphus Longestaffe [1,372 words] Reccer comment: "very short but beautifully written"
Used to be every time he looked away you got afraid he didn’t love you no more. Now every time he breathes out you’re afraid he won’t breathe in again.
Shrimp Heaven Now by Liquid_Lyrium [5,916 words] Reccer comment: "utterly silly fun"
Hanzo is single-handedly trying to get them thrown out of every Red Lobster in town. McCree is just along for the ride.
Explicit
blisters by cosmicevil [3,141 words] Reccer comment: "A gut punch every time I read it"
Hanzo is going to figure it out.
Debriefing by MittenCrab [6,332 words] Reccer comment: "The scene from this fic haunts me (in a good way). I think about it quite a lot. 6332 words by MittenCrab. A lot of feelings. So many feelings."
“You did not debrief,” Hanzo says finally. It’s more a statement than a question.
[McCree’s mission goes badly when he crosses paths with Reaper - the man who was once everything to him. Wounded and frustrated, he meets Hanzo at one of their safe houses, where he discovers that debriefing can be a lot more fun than he’d previously imagined. (PWP)]
Familiar Habits by Philosophics [8,176 words]
After joining Overwatch, Hanzo finds it difficult to sleep some nights. It is nothing a hot cup of tea cannot fix, but he never expected that he would have company.
(or: hanzo is very thirsty, in more ways than one)
It Will Come Back by CorvidFightClub [3,434 words] Reccer comment: "3,434 words, it’s fuck or die with bonus werewolf :D"
McCree and Hanzo are captured by a gang somewhere in the American Midwest after a mission. The situation becomes more dire when Hanzo finds out the gang isn’t the only thing he has to worry about.
On the Mouth by super_duper [3,292 words] Reccer comment: "I always come back to this one bc it's such a perfect balance of virgin and manslut Hanzo"
Jesse and Hanzo have a thing. Jesse would like it to be more than a thing. Hanzo has a secret.
Slippage by robocryptid [1,389 words] Reccer comment: "some more angst with smut and questionable comfort in 1389 words"
Cassidy compartmentalizes. Hanzo knows it, because he does the same.
It’s supposed to be simple, and it’s anything but.
your good side by motorghost [2,053 words] Reccer comment: "this one by motorghost is so delicious!!!"
Hanzo feels himself changing because of Cole. There's lots of ways to thank him, but when you only have nightly webcam chats, your options are limited. Luckily Hanzo is more creative than Cole knows.
Thank you to everyone who sent in a recommendation! Keep an eye out for next week's theme: "Feel-Good Hour," for all your heartwarming fluff needs!

“Six Seconds (Don’t Blink)” by AsheRhyder
 Author Summary:
Jesse McCree can stare Death in the eye to shoot six people in less than six seconds. Six bullets, six kills, as long as he doesn't blink first.
What will the cost be to keep his eyes open when the odds are stacked against the team with twenty-four enemies instead of six?
Fandom: Overwatch
Ship: McHanzo
Rating: General
---
On my last stream I recorded a bunch of 1-shots then rolled a die to decide which to edit first, so here we are! Has been cross posted on Ao3.
They’ll be another 1-shot next week, and then back into another multi-chapter fic!

Top 5 mchanzo fic recs --- go!!!
You asked for five and I couldn’t narrow it down. So I tried to make myself some categories to be like “haha top 5 in each” but that got WILDLY out of hand, so here’s a compromise I gave myself to keep it under control: 5 fave completed fics, and 5 fave WIPs, no repeats of authors allowed. There are several others that could replace any of those on this list because I probably needed a Top 15 or something, but I definitely love these with my whole heart. Listed in no particular order:
5 McHanzo Recs - Completed Fics
Static from My Better Sense by SaltCore (Teen+) - I read this one as it was updating, which I can’t say I was lucky enough for with all of those on this list. It’s so freaking good, though. The interactions between Hanzo and Gabriel are exactly what I needed them to be, and even when Jesse’s not in a scene, you can feel the impression he’s left.
Fair Enough (5 Things McCree Can Do But Doesn't Let On + 1 He Simply Won't) by AsheRhyder (Not Rated) - I’ll rec an epic sprawl of a story next, but this is one of the first fics I read in this fandom that left an impression about what kind of man McCree could be in their day-to-day lives in Overwatch, and I still love it so much.
May I by Ingridarcher (Mature) - Here’s your epic sprawl. If I’m a little late getting into a fandom, I look for those long, completed fics that serve as a sort of “explainer” for why these two belong together and flesh out the world they live in. McHanzo has quite a few of these, but this one left the strongest impression. The plot is super intriguing, and I like that Hanzo can be a bit of a disaster? Lol. Bonus points for including several interesting OCs, which is pretty difficult to pull off in fanfic!
Acceptable Substitute by mataglap (Explicit) - This is another that centers more around their everyday lives. Very sexy, lots of complicated feelings, and features my favorite McHanzo dynamic: emotionally constipated idiots Doing Their Best and occasionally antagonizing each other but not in the sense that they seem to actively dislike each other. (I realize this is a mouthful but it’s Very Specific.) Also the thing with the monkeys is still one of my favorite little moments in any fanfic, lollllll.
Drop Dead Gorgeous by WereKem (Explicit) - Listen, in a fandom with so many AUs, I’d be remiss if I didn’t include at least one in my list. I love this fic to pieces. Full of feelings and uh. Ghost sex.
5 McHanzo Recs - Works in Progress
The Chain by midgetnazgul (Explicit) - Another epic sprawl, but breaks the usual “they all work at the Watchpoint” formula with them meeting as lone, unaffiliated agents instead. Includes road trips, fun action sequences, a lot of dumb jokes, and heaping spoonfuls of angsty slow burn. Also the wish-fulfilling joy of McCree punching white supremacists. Every update brings me one step closer to death by choking on my own feelings.
Rōnin and the Nameless by motorghost (Mature) - Everything moto writes is beautiful and chock full of atmosphere, but this one’s the first I found and fell in love with, and it’s still going, so here we are. Angry, messed up people slowly falling in love is apparently my favorite genre.
Macchiato by CommonNonsense (Mature) - The coffee shop AU that is not an AU but instead undercover work. It’s so good, y’all. There’s intrigue and working together and some weird passive-aggressive flirting with an envelope full of money, and I love it.
Popcorn Redemption by wyntera (Explicit) - Framing McHanzo falling in love around a whole bunch of movie nights, I’m just. *clenches fist* so grateful this fic is gonna continue. It’s really sweet, okay, but not in a syrupy or unbelievable way. Like just the right amount of sweetness.
Ghost Stories On Route 66 by Nagaina (Explicit) - Get your AU rec right here. Mixing mythology and some horror and angst with some really, really sweet moments and a lot of humor and wordplay. This fic has So Much going on in it, and where it’s not making your heart positively ache, it’s a lot of damn fun.

Mchanzo fics that might fulfill @robo-cryptid’s au wishlist
To The Great Deep He Goes by Cibeeeee
THE mchanzo College AU. My personal favorite. There’s a scene with Hanzo and KITTENS, so like, enough said. Also Jesse’s relationship with his Hat is adorable.
Hopeless by Ilyen
Hanzo thinks Jesse is a jerk who is arrogant and flirty but don’t worry Genji fixes that with his annoying little brother tactics (TM).
In Whose Authority by Firefly_quill
This fic should be canon at this point. Jesse is a very confident flirt, but somehow Hanzo is more so and sizes him up in one go. The confrontation afterwards with Genji and Gabe is the most hilarious ‘everyone finds out’ scenario I’ve read yet.
Organic Chem And Other Health Hazards by Goodluckdetective
Hilarious. College AU in which Hanzo worries over Jesse’s study habits
Hana Song’s Guide on How Not To Be Weird by LeftHand
For once it’s HANZO who is recruiting Jesse who ignored the recall and Jesse is the slightly out of control, dysfunctional one who needs all the help he can get and also is developing a crush on a certain overwatch archer.
House Share by CommonNonsense
Hanzo represses his Giant Crush on his college roommate until everything boils over and then Hanzo runs and hides. Luckily Jesse is good at finding.
Fool’s Gold by Leoandlancer
Favorite Fairytale Dragon AU I’ve read yet, it’s full of magic and whimsy.
Daydreams and Ninja Parties by MalevolentMango
Hanzo has a crush on his college roommate and he despairs.
More Than True by Asherhyder
Fairytale AU. Honestly I’m not entirely certain what happens in this, everything is a little hazy, a little dreamy in my memory, but it’s good.
The Royal Hunt by SugarMaddy
Jesse is a spoiled selfish prince who thinks he can get anything he wants, and he wants Hanzo. Hanzo considers his attraction to the prince an annoyance and dutifully ignores it. Until he can’t. (warning jesse is a douche in the beginning)
Modern Romance by Gleed
This would be a college AU if everyone was the same age because it basically has the dynamics of ‘everyone lives in the same dorm where there’s an open door policy and everyone knows everyone and then someone hosts a Big Party and no one can keep their hands to themselves’.
Nutmeg and Cinnamon by Thtzwhatuthink
College AND coffeeshop AU where Hanzo receives free coffee from a mysterious admirer while also fielding the attentions of a Hot Barista named Jesse.
Acceptable Substitute by Mataglap
Jesse is VERY forward. And very confident in his skill, but Hanzo finds out he has reason to be. Then they both have to sort out their emotional issues.
Bean Grinder by 2gay4that
Hanzo is in college and is Super Tired and also Sexually Frustrated and Jesse works in the only coffee shop around that stays open during odd hours.

My Personal McHanzo Fic Rec List
@allthemarvelousrage, for the edification of your Anonymouse. I am not going to rec myself because I’m too honorable for that so one of you heathens will have to do it for me.
That being said:
Adaptation by CommonNonsense
https://archiveofourown.org/works/7634626
Aka, my introduction to this ship and still one of my favorites.
More Than True by AsheRhyder
https://archiveofourown.org/series/547063
Aka, the one that riffs on fairy tales because there never has been a point in my life where I haven’t loved that. In fact...just read everything Ashe writes.
Points On A Circle by Hubris_and_Crafts
https://archiveofourown.org/works/7872577
Aka, the one where I have said FOR FUCK’S SAKE, HANZO, JUST SPIT IT OUT ALREADY at least once a chapter.
The Scoundrels and Thieves series by vaguely_concerned
http://archiveofourown.org/series/523720
aka my personal favorite of the Deadlock-and-the-Shimadas once worked together/young McHanzo-turning-into-older McHanzo genre, enlivened by skillful writing and vivid setting details.
Truce by AVoresmith
https://archiveofourown.org/works/7605229
Aka, the AU in which Hanzo never leaves the Shimada-gumi, Genji and Jesse never leave Over/Blackwatch, neither organization collapses into impressive, flaming ruin, and Jesse, being the good friend that he is, agrees to grossly misuse his authority as an agent of Blackwatch to facilitate a Shimada sibling reunion.
Walk the Earth by Krasimer
https://archiveofourown.org/works/7873795
Aka, the one where Hanzo agrees to get his head back together under the care and guidance of Zenyatta, but finds the existence of one Jesse McCree even more palliative to his weary soul.

I would like to mention AO3 author asherhyder for ABSOLUTELY DESTROYING MY HEART AND MAKING ME CRY FOR REAL WITH THIS FIC
hOW DARE YOU
i DIDN’T NEED THESE FEELINGS
Lotus-Eater
AsheRhyder
Summary:
Only Jesse McCree would have the ridiculously bad luck to be abducted by a mad scientist during a mission.
In the aftermath, the line between dreams and waking blurs and distorts. Which holds more weight; the flawed reality, or the perfect dream? Which is worth fighting for? Which will hurt him worse?
Notes:
Almost forgot to thank my long-suffering beta, Poptart! @PoptartsUnlimited was very gracious and helped make this fic happen.

Week 11 Recs: He's a Magic Man
The Week 11 theme was "He's a Magic Man," or recs featuring the mystical, the magical, the fantastical, and a lot of werewolves, apparently! (If you missed your chance, monsterhuggers, don't worry: we'll have a monster-centric theme when spooky season rolls around!)
Behind the cut, you'll find the recs gathered from the Yeehan community, organized by rating and then alphabetically by title!
Not Rated
What Lies Undone by AsheRhyder [8,117 words]
There are rules to this sort of thing. Not the common sort, made to be broken and bent and outright ignored, but the old kind, made for dealing with dangerous things.
And they are all dangerous things, in Overwatch.
McCree survives by knowing which rules to break and which to obey and when to do the opposite of what he usually does. Dangerous things stay dangerous because they can change - he knows this all too well.
General Audiences
And Time Passed by Tevokkia [4,108 words] Reccer comment: "Sweet and innocent; will make you cry in a good way. Vimeddiee did art for it too"
A small cowboy in a large hat wandered out of the mist one day, and asked a lonely young dragon to be his friend. Such requests hold great weight out on the edge of reality, where the dragon kept his cave. The dragon and the little boy shared secrets and adventures.
And time passed ...
... until the little boy grew up.
Teen and Up
Fool's Gold by leoandlancer [193,940 words] Reccer comment: "I REMEMBERED ANOTHER MONSTERS, DRAMA, & EERIE THINGS BEYOND OUR MORTAL COMPREHENSION"
A vast and powerful dragon hires a surprisingly lethal monster hunter in order to kill an upsettingly big bug. It's not ideal, but they work on it. (Hanzo is pretty sure McCree can kill anything and both of them are trying not to be quite so in love with someone who can and probably will, kill them. Dragon and Monster Hunter AU)
Heartless by AsheRhyder [6,504 words]
Once upon a time, a wicked sorcerer cut out his heart and sealed it away. He hid it in a needle, put the needle in an egg, put the egg in a duck, put the duck inside a rabbit, and put the rabbit in a box on an island at the end of the world. So long as his heart was safe, nothing could kill him. Or so the legends say, anyway. Nowadays, people know what a silly story that was. Nobody bothers with rabbits anymore.
Cole Cassidy has no heart.
Sideshow by Kestrel_sama [5,414 words]
Hanzo manages to steal a night for himself at an American circus. What he finds there is no ordinary freak show.
So Nice to Meet You by fishpoets [9,142 words]
There it was again, something pale that shifted in the shadows - a mass of pure, white fur. Jesse stared. The wolf – for that's what it was, a huge, white wolf, sprawled out in front of the kitchen doors – raised its head, and stared right back.
(Five times Jesse interacts with Hanzo's daemon, plus one)
The Looking Glass by firefly_quill [9,509 words]
Hanzo lives a quiet life in his small magical antiquities shop, just far enough off the beaten-path. Quiet, at least, until Ana arrives with a magic mirror and a request. Modern fantasy AU.
Written for the McHanzo Reverse Bang 2018.
Turn Around, Lie Down (Come Home) by AsheRhyder [17,455 words] Reccer comment: "i loved this werewolf au fic"
In the dark, snow-filled night, a wolf howled.
Run with me. Eat with me. Sleep beside me. Be pack.
Mature
Cast No Shadow by PersonalSpin [46,029 words] Reccer comment: "a HDM-esque daemon AU"
Jesse McCree knows better than to trust a man without a soul. A His Dark Materials AU about things said and unsaid, and those you stay and those who leave.
(Not that kind of demon, this kind of dæmon.)
Death's Best Man by deliciously_devient [Series; WIP; 16,901 words] Reccer comment: "The Death's Best Man series by deliciously_devient is a must. It's one of the first I read when I got into the fandom"
Jesse is fifteen years old when he earns a favor from Death.
Kelp(ie) by Wulpia [5,734 words] Reccer comment: "Achingly poetic"
When biologist Hanzo goes on a trip to a remote reservoir in Scotland to study the flora of a lake there, he finds something far more interesting, ancient, and potentially deadly.
Not Another Moment by Author of Kheios [30,431 words] Reccer 1 comment: "a harry potter au, a small nsfw scene, is a long oneshot and cole is a single dad, mutual pining. Not Another Moment by author of kheois"
Reccer 2 comment: "The OW-HP crossover fic none of knew we needed"
Years ago, Cole retired as the Defense Against Dark Arts professor at Hogwarts to raise a little girl. Now, she's old enough to get accepted, but she dislikes the professor who took his place, and he has to intervene.
Hanzo has heard so many stories about the the man, the myth - nay, the legend - whose post he took at Hogwarts, yet not in a single one of them did anyone say anything about how attractive the Deadeye Cowboy is. But even if the man's daughter didn't hate him for no apparent reason, Hanzo can't afford to fall for someone who would kill him on the spot if he ever found out Hanzo's true nature. So of course, he falls head over heels.
Explicit
All That We Were, Are, and Will Come to Be by Dracoduceus [Series; WIP; 30,894 words]
His instructions were deceptively simple: visit the planet Hanamura and bring back two of the sons of the famous Shimada Clan.
McCree, captain of the Santa Fe and an independent contractor that worked with the Overwatch space station, should have known better than to think that anything about this would go according to plan.
Away by Vimeddiee [29,154 words] Reccer comment: "Light on the magic lore, strong on the feelings"
Hanzo awakens to the feel of grit in his eyes and the crunch of sand between his teeth. This in itself doesn’t rudely force him into consciousness, but the insistent flicking against his nose that he groggily attempts to bat away, does.
“High tide’s coming, you better nap someplace else.”
AKA I wanted to write Cassidy as a slappy boy so I DID.
Call of the Wild by deliciously_devient [Series; 4,712 words] Reccer comment: "Pretty sure the Call of the Wild series is the actual, literal first OW fanfic I read"
The moon is full, and the air is full of....promise.
Clipped Wings by Vashoth [14,631 words] Reccer comment: "possibly the first magic AU I read in this fandom, and the intrigue of it has stuck with me ever since"
Any hunter worth his salt knows that you should take all possible precautions to avoid messing with the Fair Folk. Most of the Fair Folk, however, don't really give a rats ass what precautions are taken and delight in messing with anything unlucky enough to get within arms reach.
Or: Hanzo is in way over his head and Jesse is loving it.
Dangerous Phases by Vrunka [13,593 words]
There are eight phases in a moon cycle. Eight phases in thirty days. And then it repeats. Over and over. Hanzo Shimada never really saw a reason to care. The moon comes, the moon goes. Hanzo Shimada also never really saw himself getting into an explicit sexual relationship with a werewolf. But well...these things do happen.
The Epic and Wondrous Tale of the Librarian and the Demon Hunter by annella [47,403 words] Reccer comment: "Hands-down one of the best AUs I've ever read, and I want desperately for the author to turn it into a series of books"
Jesse's got a pretty good job as the librarian in a magical library. He spends his days cataloguing, tracking down rare titles, fixing up the occasional spell gone awry, and dealing with the smoke monster in the basement.
Then Hanzo Shimada, Demon Hunter, shows up to turn his world upside down.
Freedom's a Funny Thing by robocryptid [4,940 words] Reccer comment: "a deliciously unnerving trickster Cassidy with a side of sex magic"
Once a year, magician Hanzo must perform a ritual to bind the dragon spirits to himself. This year, something about the ritual doesn't quite go right, and he summons a trickster along with the dragons. Now he's stuck with the stowaway until he can figure out how to dismiss him. Luckily Cassidy seems mostly benign, if irritating and predisposed to dressing as a cowboy.
Originally for the Myth//Legend zine, but now with a couple bonus scenes. Consider this the director’s cut.
Ghost Stories on Route 66 by Nagaina [210,058 words] Reccer comment: "Monsters, drama, & eerie things beyond our mortal comprehension."
Hanzo Shimada is an expatriate student of the Fine Arts, attending college in what he assumes to be a reasonably sedate corner of the American southwest. Jesse McCree is an occasionally leather-clad NPS ranger whose duties extend somewhat further than shooing lost tourists back onto the clearly marked hiking trails. Something weird is going on in the desert south of Santa Fe and their lives unexpectedly come together in the middle of it.
In the Woods Somewhere by CorvidFightClub [WIP; 3,946 words]
Hanzo has spent years of his life a captive werewolf, fighting in underground dogfights for a master that values his ability to kill and nothing else. One night he's stolen from the back of a transport van and wakes somewhere new.
A small farm in the woods somewhere.
[The Big Long E-Rated Version of the fic of the same title I wrote for the Rising Moon Fanzine.]
Licensed to Slaughter by ChillieBean [16,910 words] Reccer comment: "ChillieBean's "Licensed To Slaughter" (explicit, 16K words) features vampire Hanzo and werewolf Cassidy caught in the midst of a small-town murder mystery. It has a great plot and is excellently written. 10000000/10!"
Hanzo, an author who is struggling with his murder mystery draft, decides to move across the United States, trading the bustling city for quiet mountain life for inspiration.
Little does he know that he lands right in the middle of a real-life murder mystery and is suspect number one.
Never Saw it Coming by Kestrel_sama [WIP; 12,794 words] Reccer comment: "a cute modern-with-magic AU"
Fortune-telling was just supposed to be a way to make some money for Genji's business. It was easy enough with the dragons whispering secrets in his ears, and the outfit certainly helped bring in customers. But it was a skeptic named Jesse McCree who turned everything on it's head.
Possess by sciencefictioness [3,978 words] Reccer comment: "This week's theme covers half my bookmarks, but this is the first story that came to mind."
Jesse closes his eyes and he is not at home anymore.
He is not alone.
Jesse is in a large, open room with a high ceiling full of exposed wooden beams and what looks like straw mats spread out on the floor.  Some of the walls are solid, others are made of paper.  Words come to Jesse to unbidden like memories that aren’t his own.  Dojo.  Tatami.  Shoji.  The characters on the pillars are kanji.
Jesse is in Japan.  Parts of him, anyway.
There are people lingering along the edges of the room.  There are two figures in the center, one of them older with his eyes flashing eerie red, black hair greying at his temples.  In front of him is a boy about Jesse’s age— seventeen.  Eighteen, maybe.  He’s kneeling with his eyes downcast, long hair pulled up into a messy bun, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth.  His clothes are hanging down off his left shoulder to expose an intricate tattoo, dragons and storm clouds and lightning in blue and grey and gold.
He’s beautiful like nothing Jesse has ever seen, a tangle of contradictions.  He looks delicate.
He looks powerful.
He’s breathtaking and he’s afraid and oh, fuck.
He’s Jesse’s.
Resonant by sciencefictioness [6,473 words] Reccer comment: "Resonant by sciencefictioness is pretty sexy"
The table seems endless stretched between them; polished wood, incense filling the room with smoke, ceremonial cups of sake. Jesse stares across the length of it, his gaze locked on Hanzo with an intensity usually reserved for the hunt, except he’s never been interested in any prey the way he is now; voraciously.
Savagely.
Teeth curve long out of his jaw, and his body rolls into the half-shift all on its own. Ears pricked, tail sprouting from the base of his spine, eyes lit up red. Hanzo is doing no better.
His eyes are black, pupils blown wide, nothing but a thin ring of gold set in an impossibly dark sclera. Jesse watches Hanzo’s horns lengthen, watches his claws extend. Watches his cheeks turn red, even more pronounced against the blue of his skin.
Everything goes sideways, as Jesse always expected it would.
It just doesn’t go sideways the way he expected.
Jesse had been ready for a fight.
Survival Instinct by mataglap [36,482 words] Reccer 1 comment: "OH, ha, also monsters, drama, & eerie things beyond our mortal comprehension"
Reccer 2 comment: "Survival Instinct, by mataglap, is one I've read multiple times"
Cassidy takes a new monster hunting contract. It's pretty decent as contracts go: the pay is good, the perks even better, and he's got two competent companions to fight at his side when the monsters come.
Then a third companion arrives and ruins everything.
Watcher in the Woods by Kalikuks [84,072 words] Reccer 1 comment: "Kali does a lot of monster and magic/fantasy fics, but if I can only choose one, this is it"
Reccer 2 comment: ""Watcher in the Woods" by Kalikuks 🥰 (explicit, old name for Cass) Blind Hanzo and eldrich being Cassidy. Buckle up cause is a long one with sequels!❤️"
Hanzo gets the uncanny feeling that he’s being towered over and instinctually tips his head up, even if he sees nothing.
“You can’t see me,” a deep honeyed voice rumbles from above, a good few feet above, Hanzo guesses.
“I—“
Hanzo’s reply is drowned out when the hunting party crashes through the foliage behind him and the screaming begins.
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- --
AU Where Hanzo is Blind and Jesse is an eldritch being of sorts that drives men mad when they look upon him. They fall in love.
---
And that's it for the Week 11 recs! Thank you so much to everyone who submitted a recommendation.

Week 5 Recs: Golden Oldies
This week's Yeehan fic rec theme was "Golden Oldies," or those fics from Overwatch's early days that left a lasting impression. I asked for recs from 2016 and 2017, and boy, did folks have plenty! Check out the recs gathered from the Yeehan community below, organized by rating then alphabetically by title.
Not Rated
Fair Enough (5 Things McCree Can Do But Doesn't Let On + 1 He Simply Won't) by AsheRhyder [5,776 words] Reccer comment: "Everything AsheRyder wrote during this period is solid gold. Tasty, angsty gold."
“So what do you say? You interested?” McCree’s smile was as wide and inviting as an open door. Hanzo looked over the scruffy cowboy with a critical eye and a severe frown. “No,” he said and watched the door shut, quiet and easy. “Fair enough.” McCree tipped his hat and sauntered off.
In the months that followed, Hanzo learned many things about McCree that made him change his opinion on man; amazing, curious, and terrifying things. The most infuriating of them being this:
Jesse McCree never asked twice.
Lucid Dream by Somebody_Someone [WIP; 277,255 words] Reccer comment: "one of my two all time favourite, brain chemistry altering fics!"
Years ago he was a successful writer, and now he is struggling to get by every single day. Between art block, depression, insomnia and a comatose brother, Hanzo is constantly hanging on by his fingernails.
One day, he finds solace in the strangest shape; lucid dreams of a most unwelcoming land where he meets a terribly frustrating cowboy, gets in deep trouble and goes on a quest for a mysterious treasure. With the insufferable cowboy as his guide.
The journey will be long, scattered with obstacles and dangers, but may it be enlightened by the unexpected blooming of a friendship and perhaps something deeper.
Two Noons in their Moccasins by Scrumpadouchus [WIP; 89,675 words] Reccer comment: "This!! It's a Your name AU and it's still a work in progress but it's seriously gold! I suggest to watch the film before but for me this ff is a 10/10"
In which an archer and a cowboy start suddenly waking up in each others' bodies, and they attempt to make the most of being suddenly dropped into the life of a complete stranger.
In the process they make some mischief, make some mistakes and change each others' lives.
Teen and Up
A Comedy of Eros (A Tragedy of Communication in Five Acts) by AsheRhyder [9,886 words]
Hanzo wondered why they even made mission plans when they all went horrifically wrong. Take this last one: what was supposed to be a quiet artifact retrieval from Ilios turned into a brawl with Talon over an ancient quiver full of arrows.
Arrows that, apparently, had some Very Interesting Side Effects on enemy and friend alike.
Good Fences Make Good Neighbors by vandoodle [75,467 words]
Hanzo Shimada regrets ever joining Overwatch after he is paired with Jesse McCree, known cowboy enthusiast, and dropped off in the middle of American suburbia. Forced to blend in with the environment, endure neighborhood cookouts, and share his new living space with his so-called 'Husband', the two prepare to preform the ultimate sting operation: taking down the Vishkar corporation once and for all. He can't help but think this will all go horribly wrong.
Or, alternatively titled: the undercover fake-marriage fic that every fandom deserves.
Hanzo: Koi no Yokan by franklytriggering [WIP; 15,998] Reccer comment: "this one's not hyped up enough imo. should be a classic. (unfinished by honestly the ending still slaps!)"
Hanzo struggles to rein in his delinquent brother, Genji, as their father's health wanes and obligation demands their answer. While their fate speeds towards its inevitable breaking point, Hanzo wrestles between family tradition and his wayward emotions-- marrying well, or giving in to his own needs.
Like the River by Goodluckdetective (scorpiontales) [5,847 words] Reccer comment: "I do love me some good ol 'dragons expose Hanzo's inner workings'"
Dragon Spirits don’t trust just anyone.
McCree never expected for them to ever trust him.
Or how McCree gained some trust, won a shootout, almost caught the flu, and proceeded to be the most handsome damsel in distress Overwatch has ever seen.
Lone Wolf by AsheRhyder [Series; 66,124 words]
After the fall of Overwatch, Jesse McCree survived for years like a lone wolf. But wolves weren't meant to live alone, and as the Recall draws heroes back to the forefront, he'll have to learn how to adapt or get left behind again.
Lotus-Eater by AsheRhyder [16,116 words]
Only Jesse McCree would have the ridiculously bad luck to be abducted by a mad scientist during a mission.
In the aftermath, the line between dreams and waking blurs and distorts. Which holds more weight; the flawed reality, or the perfect dream? Which is worth fighting for? Which will hurt him worse?
More Than True by AsheRhyder [Series; 34,346 words]
"Fairy tales are more than true..." -G.K. Chesterton.
In which there are dragons, and castles, and monsters of all sorts.
OR
That series of stories in which buildings repeatedly fall on Hanzo.
People Like Us by fishpoets [8,764 words]
Jesse's never much believed in 'happily ever after', but it turns out it might be possible after all, even for a man like him. That is, if life doesn't ruin it for him first.
Mature
Adaptation by CommonNonsense [13,315 words]
McCree always did like a challenge, and Hanzo Shimada is a bundle of challenges wrapped up in a handsome package and tied with a gold ribbon.
Body Heat by BatKatBrown [2,575 words]
Little oneshot inspired by this comic which is amazing. http://disteal.tumblr.com/image/158383507645
Crown of Horns by Anonymous [150,888 words] Reccer comment: "I've recently started Re-reading one of my fav old ones: Crown of Horns (mind the tags!)"
"But you know, I rather like the idea of you as one of those beasts. Wouldn't that look nice for the clan, Hanzo? A living, breathing dragon, chained to a post in the gardens."
four days by feyhound [23,869] Reccer 1 comment: "one of my all time favs Four Days"
Reccer 2 comment: "One of my first fav is this 🥰 I have a weak spot for fics like these 🥺"
“I have an embarrassin’ favor to ask of you,” Cole says.
Hanzo stares at him expectantly, a single brow arched. “And what is that?” he asks.
“Y’see, my family might currently be under the impression that I’m bringin’ home a date for a few days next week. And, the thing is, I don’t really have one. So, I’m currently S-O-L and would really, really appreciate it if you came home with me for a few days and, uh. Pretended. To be my boyfriend.”
He stares down at his plate and jabs a fry into the enormous puddle of ketchup gathered in the center of it. If only the fry could be his hypothetical four-day boyfriend, he thinks; it would save him an enormous amount of embarrassment. It would be tastier, too.
[ Or - Cassidy desperately needs a fake date to bring home to his family, and Hanzo never does anything half-assed. ]
Foxhole Dreaming by fishpoets [18,569]
After Hanzo and McCree are ambushed on an undercover mission and McCree is injured, they need to hide out in a secret bunker that McCree knows of while they wait to be rescued. The prospect of a few days in close-quarters alone with McCree wouldn't be a problem, except for one thing: Hanzo's feelings for the gunslinger don't stop at friendship.
Hang the Fool by AlmaMeDuele [231,922 words] Reccer comment: "i remember reading it in 2017 and its still my fav one in this fandom"
How the heroic organization Overwatch acquires the talents of one Hanzo Shimada, and how gunslinger Jesse McCree will probably suffer because of it for the rest of his days.
Love Bites and Liquid Courage by timehopper [4,633 words]
McCree should not show up at his door in a drunken haze this often; and yet every time he does, Hanzo lets him in.
May I by Ingridarcher [182,716 words] Reccer comment: "my rec is the first Yeehan fic I read that I remember making An Impression on me"
"We're nothing alike, Shimada. You? You fell down from the sky. And me? I clawed my way up, outta the dirt."
Jesse was there. He was on the Blackwatch team that dragged Genji Shimada's body away and brought it back to the Overwatch medical facility. He saw what Genji's brother, Hanzo, did to him. Now, Overwatch has been recalled, and when Genji comes back he brings along the last person McCree ever expected: his murdering brother. And while Hanzo seems oddly drawn to McCree, Jesse wants nothing to do with him.
Points on a Circle by AughtPunk [111,325 words] Reccer comment: "it's not exclusively yeehan but omg it's such a well-crafted piece"
It began when Cole Cassidy summoned one of Hanzo's dragons in the middle of battle.
It began a month ago when Hanzo looked at Cole and realized he's already in love.
It began an hour ago when Satya heard the word 'magic' and refused the believe.
It began six months ago when Genji introduced his his brother to Cole, not knowing the two of them have a past.
It begins.
Undercover by lyriumveins [14,749 words]
Hanzo is a new member of Overwatch, working undercover in a coffee shop with a few other agents. He’s adjusting to his new life – and making good progress on his missions – when he starts finding ridiculous messages scrawled on coffee cups… Messages that are, apparently, for him. While he’s convinced it’s all just a ridiculous prank, D.Va calls them “pick-up lines” and insists that he has a “secret admirer.”
Whiskey Lullaby by CaptainCorgi [WIP; 64,791 words] Reccer comment: "Unfinished! But classic"
The buzz of the communicator had him jumping, knee slammed against the metal desk and a string of curses followed. Not looking, Jesse palmed the device, opening its front screen and stopped cold. The message wasn't from any of his team mates. In fact it wasn't from Overwatch at all. There was no sent from address, no name, and it contained one sentence.
Recipient: 10.29M.76 Status: Urgent Subject: -
Message:
Welcome home.
Who Taught You How to Hate by Valpur [46,594 words]
He’d always known it was going to happen. There weren’t many ways to go for a rogue like him, but all in all he would have much preferred a clean hole in his skull rather than being hanged for robbery and murder. Especially because this one single, fucking time he was not guilty.
--
McCree is having the worst time of his life and an outlander happens to save his sorry ass. Things go awfully weird after that - and he enjoys it all too much.
Explicit
Afterdrop by ClaroQueQuiza [WIP; 638,116 words]
Overwatch can be forgiven for keeping Hanzo at arm's length despite the endorsement of his intended murder victim. Six months of provisional membership, spent in the field, is a reasonable compromise.
But not everyone is on board with giving Hanzo a chance.
Cassidy, least of all.
Backroom Deals by dragonspell [7,754 words]
“Oh.” Jesse shifts on the chair, rattling the cuffs again, as his eyes dart helplessly downward, drawn by a kind of gravitational force. “I was wondering if you might, uh, show me your ankles?”
(Or, Jesse gets himself captured while trying to infiltrate a Shimada safe house and he and Hanzo reach a deal; Blackwatch-era, slight-AU; the foot fetish McHanzo that no one asked for)
the best medicine by fishpoets [4,298 words] Reccer comment: "Happy smut"
Hanzo and Jesse, a successful mission, a night alone together. Bad jokes and lots of laughter.
The Dragon's Mate by kdwalbring [116,347 words] Reccer comment: "The dragons mate is one I will always recommend! I've reread this more times than I can count all the way through and love it more each time!"
Talon is too powerful for the newly formed Overwatch to handle head-on, so plans are made to infiltrate one of their strongest supporters. Jesse McCree hasn't found a home or family quite like what he had in Blackwatch, but he's determined to protect his new friends whatever it takes.
Turns out, mating to your best friends murderous brother is what it takes and he goes willingly. Something's not right in the Shimada clan though and he's going to figure it and Shimada Hanzo out.
Or: Arranged Marriage Yakuza ABO AU, because all the things! THIS WILL HAVE A HAPPY ENDING!!
Familiar Habits by Philosophics [8,176 words] Reccer 1 comment: "I really like this one"
Reccer 2 comment: "One of my first ever Yeehan bookmarks back in the day!"
After joining Overwatch, Hanzo finds it difficult to sleep some nights. It is nothing a hot cup of tea cannot fix, but he never expected that he would have company.
(or: hanzo is very thirsty, in more ways than one)
I got this fever, fever burning inside by CourtneyCourtney [11,300 words]
Hanzo has heard stories of this 'weapon', the most lurid tales courtesy of McCree, naturally. A libido accelerant Talon injects intravenously, giving its victims the option of mauling a stranger for sexual release, forcing themselves on a teammate and ruining any trust built between the two, or - to quote Jesse's turn of phrase - dying of "blue balls."
In other words, not a way for someone like Jesse McCree to go. Not if Hanzo is determined to help. It would be a shame to lose a colleague as altruistic and reliable as McCree to a weapon so primitive.
If he has to choke out the voice at the back of his mind questioning his own altruism in performing this act, then so be it.
(or, McCree gets sex pollened by Talon, and Hanzo helps him out the way any good friend would (Really. Stop gagging, Genji.))
Ichigo by morrezela [27,121 words] Reccer comment: "Ichigo will forever be my go to fic. 😭😭 even tho it’s so heartbreakingly good"
They break up on a Wednesday
It's All Your Fault by Cadeykat [25,100 words]
Hanzo Shimada joins the ranks of Overwatch and finds that he quite likes teasing the resident cowboy. That is, until a single compliment ruins his thought process, and he has to deal with feelings he's not exactly well versed in.
Magic McCree by Cadeykat [15,105 words]
Hanzo Shimada does not want to be here, he does not like strip clubs and never has. And Genji is wrong, he does not need to 'get laid', no matter how long this dry spell has lasted. He knows he'll regret being here tonight, and he needs a drink. And the tall glass of water clad in plaid that just bumped into him could be what cures his thirst.
More than Most by leoandlancer [7,103 words] Reccer comment: "Shooting at your loved ones always works to confess your love, right?"
Initially, McCree thinks he's the one chasing Hanzo for time alone. However, after Hanzo tips his hand slightly playing target practice, McCree's less certain. Then Hanzo accompanies him to a private island, where he neatly lays to rest all of McCree's assumptions about his reticence. McCree simply chased until Hanzo finally caught him. Short little thing because McHanzo smooches and smut are giving me so much joy.
Poker Face by Cadeykat [28,383 words]
“Shark, my ass. Man cleared out $60,000 at the first table he played at.”
Hanzo shrugs, silently delighting in how Daniel sucks in a bracing breath at his nonchalance. Oh, he loves riling him up. Serves him right for calling him in on his day off. “So? That’s not entirely uncommon. Perhaps he’s just good at poker.”
“He’s won almost $250 grand over the last four days.”
Oh.
This is going to be fun.
Scoundrels and Thieves 'verse by vaguely_concerned [WIP; Series; 127,655 words]
Canon AU where the Shimada family and the Deadlock gang used to do business, Hanzo and Cassidy had a thing… and then Cassidy gets the ‘offer’ from Overwatch.
stop me if you've heard this one by losebetter [WIP; 9,516 words] Reccer comment: "my oldest yeehan bookmark, a very old WIP, but I recommend it regardless and still occasionally reread it because it's so good"
love or death. grab an end, pull hard, and make a wish. richard siken.
--
“Mmm. And, here, here is the best part of this, Jesse,” Hanzo slurs, afterwards, about oh-two-hundred by Jesse’s estimation. He’s standing around nude in the en suite, and Hanzo looks downright decadent lounging in the wrecked sheets back on the bed, all dark eyes, dark hair that cuts down over one shoulder like spilled ink. His long fingers shift on the flask propped up next to him, and Jesse swears some part of his tattoo ripples with the movement, too eye-catching to have come from the dim ceiling light. Maybe he’s still a little tipsy, but he can’t pretend he’s never seen Hanzo in action before, either.
Target Panic by Philosophics [20,500 words] Reccer comment: "an old fav of mine, funny, sexy and a bit angsty"
McCree looks him steadily in the eyes. “I said, I’m in love with you,” he repeats. Hanzo stares some more as the words sink in. “You,” he states imperiously, “are mistaken.” Then he promptly turns on his heel and strides out the open carrier door. - In which McCree confesses his love, Hanzo has some difficulty believing him, and the team seems entirely unable to keep from sticking their noses into the whole affair.
We're all Blackwatch Now by firefly_quill [WIP; Series; 18,491 words]
“Blackwatch under scrutiny after complaint from Japanese government”.
How Jesse McCree gets in trouble *for* following orders, for once.
This wraps up the Week 5 recs! Thank you to everyone who sent in a recommendation! Keep an eye out for next week's theme: "Show & Tell," all about the love confessions.

Week 2 Recs: Feel-Good Hour
The Week 2 Fic Rec Friday theme was "Feel-Good Hour," or fluffy, heartwarming fics! Here are all the fluffiest fics recommended by the Yeehan community, organized by rating, then alphabetically by title.
General Audience
Blue Roses and Salted Caramel by AsheRhyder [11,135 words] Reccer comment: "Hanzo is the head of a post office and Cassidy is in need of his services."
Hanzo hated Valentine's Day and everything that went with it. This got exceptionally awkward for a man whose courier service saw business triple in the lead up to February 14th.
A series of 'special deliveries' between Mr. Jack Morrison and Mr. Gabriel Reyes drew his attention. Initially, it was because he wasn’t sure if it was the world's most polite form of hate mail or the world's most awkward flirting...
But then there was something about Mr. Reyes' son, Jesse, that kept him coming back...
From Another Room by acrxphxbia [3,822 words] Reccer comment: "I always come back to this because its just so freaking sweet I'll have diabetes"
Jesse and Hanzo have a lazy day together. They play some music. A birthday gift for my lovely wife, Tsol.
Keep You On My Side by maskedhero, radiantsaber [11,438 words] Reccer comment: "I don't know that it's necessarily gooey or fluffy, but I'm pretty sure this is the softest Yeehan I have in my bookmarks."
Hanzo Shimada has loved Jesse McCree for years.
And for years, he remained silent.
A Night of Firsts by KittenzCaboodle [13,752 words] Reccer comment: "I'd like to also rec one of my fics, if it's alright, which is just pure G-rated humor and fluff"
Out of every Overwatch and Blackwatch team member Cole had worked with, Hanzo Shimada was certainly not the worst.  He had met ruder folks, meaner folks, and Hanzo was… well, Hanzo was just kinda… there, sitting in the corner, rarely making a sound, like a stray dog that you had let in from the rain that wasn’t sure if a meal or a boot was coming its way next.
Hanzo seemed perfectly content to stay out of the spotlight, pulling more than his weight on missions, assisting around the base when asked, but never going out of his way to do or say much outside of anything related to work.  There were only a few souls he even felt comfortable being near - Genji, Ana, and Cole - but being near was a far cry from being relaxed around. - Hanzo agreeing so easily to accompany Cole on a mission in Japan was a surprise, not that Cole minded getting a chance to work more closely with the handsome fella.
It would be one of a few surprises they encountered that night, as they had a night of firsts.
Teen and Up
Dreamlike by mataglap [4,063 words] Reccer comment: "Another one where they meet in dreams and it becomes reality ♡˖꒰ᵕ༚ᵕ⑅꒱"
Hanzo is used to bad dreams, and he never would have expected that a good dream would end up haunting him the most.
A Good Time is Free by cocoabunny [2,385 words] Reccer comment: "this fic is so much fun and has the distinction of being perhaps the only fic tagged both 'assassination attempt' and 'fluff' I've ever read"
McCree and Hanzo are sent on an undercover mission to assassinate a bad, bad dude—except they mess up and get trapped in a mall overnight. How did two professional ex-assassins manage to get locked in, and how are they going to cope without murdering (or passionately kissing) each other?!
Just Once by Vimeddiee [2,534 words] Reccer comment: "sugar sweet fluff"
Cole dreams that he’s kissing someone.
Respite by CommonNonsense [5,732 words] Reccer comment: "This one is a delightful read. I enjoy how the characters are written!"
He freezes for a moment before he finally hazards a look down. Hanzo has apparently nodded off, lulled into a doze by a sake with a frankly alarming alcohol percentage, and managed to tip into McCree before he could fall over.
Honestly? Not the first time someone’s done this to him.
It is the first time that McCree hesitates, though.
you give me the most gorgeous sleep by JeziBelle [1,537 words] Reccer comment: "I've only finished one yeehan fic ever and it's cotton candy (and also contains my favorite weird Southern turn of phrase I've ever written). In hopes that attention will make me write again, I humbly submit it here."
It's not that Jesse's particularly fond of waking up alone, but he's more than happy to settle for however much Hanzo is willing to give him.
Which makes for more than a little confusion the morning he doesn't.
Mature
four days by feyhound [23,869 words] Reccer comment: "Now, if you're into pretend/fake relationship fluff like I am, PLEASE read this. It's an old favorite and I come back to it every time I need a serotonin boost."
Like that guy in the Odyssey by vaguely_concerned [5,924 words] Reccer comment: "not quite gooey, but as fluffy as it can reasonably get and incredibly heartwarming"
In which a pair of wanderers return home — some slice of outlaw life!
Never Say Never (say how you feel) by fishpoets [5,402 words] Reccer comment: "one of my favorite tropes, and very sweet to boot!"
A list of things Jesse McCree has never done:
- spent the night with a lover without having sex - kept a lover for more than a handful of encounters - had a friend-with-benefits he actually considered a friend - or had a lover he actually loved.
There's a first time for everything.
Explicit
Have and Hold by t_pock [2,716 words] Reccer comment: "This one also has smut but it's so fluffy and so heart-warming... yeehan marriage 🥺❤️"
Jesse always thought there’d be a firefight on his wedding day.
And that's a wrap on this week! Thank you to everyone who sent in a recommendation! Keep an eye out for next week's theme: "Right on Time," or modern/contemporary AUs.
In the meantime, you can also check out the Week 1 recs here or preview upcoming themes here!

Week 3 Recs: Right on Time
This week's Yeehan recs were all modern/contemporary AUs. Those fics set in our world and time (or roughly thereabouts) that still include the OTP. Check out the recs gathered from the Yeehan community below, organized by rating then alphabetically by title.
Not Rated
Rootbound by wyntera [WIP; 67,484 words] Reccer comment: "Flower shop au bc yes"
Every plant is unique. They need love and care in the right environment to grow. Give them what they need, and they will flourish.
McCree and Hanzo are a lot like plants. Big, stubborn, root bound plants.
General Audiences
Conflict of Interest by orphan_account [28,222 words] Reccer comment: "Superhero au with a Lois Lane type beat"
“You know, I’ve been wanting to get an interview with you,” Jesse says as Hanzo happens upon another malfunctioning elevator shaft. How is it at all likely that more than one elevator is out of service? When Hanzo levels Jesse with a hard glare, the man keeps talking.   “I’m a reporter.”
Or, the one where Hazno and Genji fight crime, Jesse is a cigar-smoking Lois Lane, and everyone else wonders why they’ve been trapped in a bad comic book.
Teen and Up
Climbing the Walls by robocryptid [22,669 words] Reccer comment: "a social-distancing yeehan fic"
Hanzo and Cole are neighbors who have never met until social distancing forces them to stay in their homes. Neither can see the other's face, but that doesn't stop them from getting to know each other.
Da Capo al Signo by midgetnazgul & temporalSilence [75,482 words] Reccer comment: "an incredibly moving fic featuring musician Hanzo and rancher Cassidy falling in loooove"
In music, da capo al signo tells the performer to start over until they see the sign to move on. Life has its movements, too. Even when we must begin again, signs will appear to remind us that just because we feel we are repeating ourselves, we will not necessarily end in the same terrible place we were before.
It's 2018 and Jesse and Hanzo are both living in Tucson, AZ on second chances. Hanzo is on the cusp of recognition as a musician after his life in Japan is run aground by a devastating accident, and Jesse has chiseled out a life of purpose and achievement after a rough childhood. Together, they will come to understand how misfortune and loneliness can end, giving gifts they would never have found any other way.
Flowers for Assholes by HappyLeech [10,552 words]
Hanzo just wants to close up shop for the night. Jesse just wants to tell his boss where to stick it and quit his job.
Of the Pickle Persuasion by Byacolate and mywordsflyup [14,813 words] Reccer comment: "My favorite food truck au"
Hanzo is convinced that his bento wagon is locked in a corporate deathmatch with the taco truck down the street. Genji just wants to flirt with the produce vendor.
Searching for Game... by AsheRhyder [10,792 words] Reccer comment: "Cute, cute, cute, with fun meta jokes about the game, characters, and community."
Genji wants Cassidy to play the new game he helped develop: Overwatch.
Cassidy just wants his hot upstairs neighbor to stop throwing food at him every time he says "hello".
Shimada Dreams of Sushi by delicaterosebud [24,344 words] Reccer comment: "It's silly, but has the right amount of drama, angst and extremely uncomfortable situations."
As the owner of a mediocre taco shack with tanking reviews and multiple health violations, the last thing that Jesse McCree needs is competition - competition, specifically, from a sushi bar so popular that it drove every other restaurant in the neighborhood out of business.
From the very day that Shimada sushi opened its doors, Jesse had hated that restaurant with a burning passion. ...So how does he end up working for the man who runs it?
To the Great Deep He Goes by westerncibee [53,288 words] Reccer comment: "its been a hot second since ive read this but i remember enjoying this one"
Hanzo accompanies Genji to their new college, and of course Genji would want to room with his friend--leaving Hanzo to deal with a god-forsaken cowboy whose only goal that year was to be Hanzo's friend. And as the cowboy said, "You're stuck with me for the rest of the year." - and a lot can happen in a year.
Mature
The Cooking Cowboy by SadakoTetsuwan [WIP; 79,662 words]
It had started simple—he just needed a good recipe for matcha cake to surprise Genji on his birthday, and so he’d started clicking around for tutorials on YouTube.
But now Hanzo is in deep, and is officially part of ‘The Chuckwagon’; the mostly middle-aged, mostly female fan following of YouTube cooking sensation Jesse McCree, the Cooking Cowboy.
How had his life come to this?
Explicit
School Nights by rebeccastceir [WIP; 45,484 words] Reccer comment: "School teacher au and romance~"
Jesse got so flustered he forgot what he was doing and stuck his hand out. “Jesse. McCree. Jesse McCree. I’m -”
“Hana’s teacher, of course,” Hanzo smiled at him, shaking hands, holding on for a split second longer than necessary. He held his head cocked down, almost shy, but kept looking up from under his long lashes, pretty lips teasing in a grin, and ohhh, Jesse was in so much trouble he ached with it.
“Sorry. You knew that,” Jesse mumbled. Was he red? He felt like he was flaming red. __________
It's the fluffiest, smuttiest, romcom-iest, parent-teacher au we all need and deserve
Shear Bliss by wyntera [12,725 words] Reccer comment: "I think about the way Hanzo's hair is described in this fic all the time"
Sometimes you can't help falling for a handsome face...even if they are holding very sharp objects near your head.
And that's a wrap on Week 3! Thank you to everyone who sent in a recommendation! Keep an eye out for next week's theme: "The Rivalmance," or fics all about the rivals to lovers, enemies to lovers, competitive assholes to lovers of it all.
In the meantime, you can also check out the Week 2 recs here or see the list of past and future themes here!

“Hanzo knew three things about the gunslinger with absolute certainty:
1.) That he was ruggedly handsome 2.) That he was dangerous 3.) That he was not human
It probably said a lot about him that he was more concerned about the first thing than the other two.”

Alright guys! Votes were made, and “Second Thoughts” won majority (well, after “you could record anything and I’d love it”) so here we are! Since this chapter is so large, I’ll be posting the first 3 parts tonight, and the other 3 parts next week Wednesday.
Enjoy!

And that’s a wrap folks!  I really like how this one turned out.  I got a few requests to work on next, but chances are I’ll read more AsheRhyder in the future (I’m looking at you Lone Wolf).  Thanks for listening!
