I've talked briefly before about Kippa being an extremely abnormally powerful healer, and the effects and consequences of the megaheal that she dropped on EotN in the aftermath of Rhenn being shot by Bangar. But I've never really gone into a whole lot of detail as to why her water, and to a lesser degree air, attunement is so frighteningly powerful.
Kippa was born in the Thaumanova city cube to Suzzi and Trill, both of them professors. They had been in an extended contract for some time and had been trying for kids, but it seemed like they were having no luck. Suzzi had, in fact, lost several progeny by the time she was pregnant with Kippa.
And Kippa was their last try before they planned to give up.
Anxious and scared about the whole order, Suzzi decided to take the advice of a work acquaintance and see a young physician named Kadd at the College of Iatrics that was apparently very sharp when it came to this sort of thing.
Out of options and desperate to find something that worked, Suzzi took the advice. He was very enthusiastic, explaining the sorts of treatments he would be using, a combination of traditional medicine and magic to strengthen the baby to give her a better chance of surviving to see the world.
It was while Suzzi was telling a friend about the treatments that she learned the truth: Kadd was with the Inquest, and not only that, he was an apprentice of an infamous alumni from Iatrics, an Inquest Overseer named Prikk, known for his fascination with genetic modification and producing the "perfect" asura. Horrified, Suzzi took Trill with her to confront Kadd, and she learned the truth. There was no traditional medicine involved, and he was effectively exposing her unborn progeny to frighteningly high levels of what at the time was called chaos magic, but would later be revealed as dragon magic.
Though Suzzi cut off the treatments effective immediately, she at least got lucky in one regard: Kippa was born on time and perfectly healthy. It wasn't until she got a little older that she would start to show signs of having uncannily strong magic, hurting herself playing only to put her hand in water and pull it out healed without ever being taught to do such a thing. And it would only escalate from there.
In a world where all was revealed, it would come out that the magic used on Kippa when she was still in the womb was mostly tied to Soo Won. Had she had the opportunity to spend time with her, or know her before the events at Eye of the North, her magic may have wound up being even more closely tied to the water dragon instead of taking on the prismatic effects it does after she taps into Aurene's magic to save Rhenn's life.

Dragon came to me in a dream.
Once a follower of Jormag, Hanne now serves as a member of the Crystal Bloom, seeking to gain fresh insight into the nature of Dragon's strength. After all, Aurene survived where Jormag did not.

Always rubs me the wrong way when people try to assert Aurene and Taimi as the Commander’s daughters. Used to see it with Braham sometimes too, the "that's your son!" talk... Those aren't Alba's kids and he would not come pick them up from the help desk if they were lost in a store. Because he is also lost in the store. And he's crying way more than they are.
Maybe it's just like. Taimi is an adult and even having known her as a progeny it was hard for me to aim my very young sylvari at her and say "oh yeah! this is her dad! 😎 👍" because even when she WAS a progeny, Alba was still a sapling. They were on equal footing and they've stayed that way. In fact I'd not even hesitate to say that Alba struggles to stay at Taimi's level of maturity and wisdom and always has; there are countless ways in which he's younger than her, not just his physical age.
And I've already touched before on his relationship with Aurene never being parent/child. He loves her a lot and yes he was there for her as a baby and they were incredibly close. But. I dunno. Aurene also quickly surpassed him in emotional maturity and wisdom. He could never catch back up to the baby dragon he took care of, even if the chance arose to see her again. And while they did have a bond that felt familial, again, it was never a parent/child thing. If we absolutely had to put human familial terms to it I'd say Alba was like a big sister to her, and the roles changed and reversed quickly anyway as she neared and then reached maturity. At their cores they are both creatures forced to grow up very fast to feed the war machine. Aurene gained a lot of insight and a higher plane of understanding of the world as she did so, while Alba gained a lot of trauma and heavy burdens. And he's never gotten over a single burden he's been handed. He's emotionally trapped in cycles of mourning things that happened a decade ago as if they were new developments, because he never learned to let go and move on. And Aurene moved on from everything. She's advanced past the point that he can reach, while he's regressed.
Anyway the original point feels to me similar to when people say "found family" and what they mean is "nuclear family reenactment." Wherein we need a mommy a daddy and a boy and a girl, and each close tie needs to fit neatly into one narrow category of relationship and never deviate. Well they don't. 🙆
Bold disclaimer this is my opinion on my own character I'm not telling other people what to do or how to feel about it. 🤸 I just don't enjoy it myself.

have anwen and/or galaed for the ask game, if you’d like! :D (and hope you feel better soon! <3) @kerra-and-company
Thank you 🥰 It's already better than this morning but i'm not out of the woods yet 😅
Anwen, my beloved:
01. Full name: Vicountess Anwen Evergreen (if Snargle is to be believed, Faren would be a Duke... Anwen's bloodline is nowhere as prominent and influent as the Farens but her parents did bestow upon her a title – mostly honorific – to go with her estate in the Reach)
02. Best friend: Meryw 🌲💙 (though one could argue that Meryw is her sister and Canach is her best friend 😅)
03. Sexuality: Quarterly bi! (courtesy of @lilypixy) Demi but so slow to work out her attraction that she only gets half of that label 🤣 !
04. Favorite color : Sapphire blue
05. Relationship status: Taken (by Trahearne)
06. Ideal mate: clever, thoughtful, gentle, supportive... Trahearne.
07. Turn-ons: Neck kisses, being swept off her feet
08. Favorite food: Orrian truffle risotto, New Kaineng Noodles (the extra spicy ones), white chocolate and raspberry cake 🍰
09. Crushes: Sieran, Trahearne (insert 'not sure if' meme : not sure if bi, pan, or just really into sylvari)
10. Favorite music: Balade, sung poems and festive music (she particularly loves the bell choirs of Wintersday because the crystalline sounds remind her of Aurene)
11. Biggest fear: "That one day through my actions I'd condemn someone to suffer in agony." - Her worst fear comes true both with Apatia and Trahearne. In a broader sense, she's terrified of failing to protect her loved ones, of outliving them...
12. Biggest fantasy: The dragon cycle has ended, Aurene is happy and at peace, her friends and family are safe from all harm and she's living her life alongside with her loved ones. There's a library with more books, scrolls and tablets that could be read in a dozen lifetimes, and the more they read the more volumes appear. Running out of time is not something either of them has to worry about, though. There's a garden that needs tending, and a plum tree with a blanket underneath and fairy lights in it, and always a glass of wine or a cup of tea at hand. — a little sneak peek of their "after" 😌
13. Bad habits: Takes more than she can shoulder and hides it till she breaks ; inadvertently ghosts people because she has time blindness and picks up relationships where they left out
14. Biggest regret: Being unable to save Sieran and Blish... there were other deaths she wish she could go back in time and do things differently to avert, but none feel more unfair than these two..
15. Best kept secrets: A generous and totally anonymous donation she made to the Shining Blade, in hope to commute some of a certain sylvari's service time.
16. Last thought: as in... her last thought, or the last thought I had about her? For the latter I was wondering which Aurene legendary to give her before the new content drops... whether to finish Aurene's Insight – that I could use on a LOT of my characters – or finish the shield or get her the greatsword... I love her wielding Caladbolg and I don't want that to change but a branded Caladbolg would be... somewhat bittersweetly fitting. I don't really know how to explain 😅
17. Worst romantic experience: The amount of stress she was under when she realised she was in love with Trahearne, the fear of losing him and the dark relief she felt when the many deaths they encountered were, at least, not his.
18. Biggest insecurity: She wonders if she could have done more to protect Aurene from the crushing weight of her destiny... to buy her some time, some peace, some safety...
19. Weapon of choice: Greatsword and shield
20. Role Model: The people she loves have shaped her throughout her life and keep shaping her as she journeys forth. Violet and Conrad Faren, with their kind heart and sharp spirits ; the memory of her parents, a legacy she wanted to honour ; Logan Thackeray, with all the dumb courage and chaotic energy of a golden retriever; Sieran, for her unbridled joy in discovery and for being the first person Anwen could really infodump to without seeming to tire her; Meryw, for the constance of her heart, the brilliance of her mind and the valiance of her soul ; Trahearne, for his openness, his dedication and the brightness of his hope.
Both @dumb-dumb-mander and you requested some insight on Galaëd so I'll make an Autumn Birch centric post tomorrow and tag you both, if that's okay 🥰🍂 gonna hit the hay, now!

Got the Soo-Won variant unlocked for Aurene’s Insight and immediately remade my Kuunavang’s Disciple look for it.
It’s very pretty, but the effects are more subtle than the other variants and it kinda looks too close to Jormag’s version (but they are both blue so that doesnt help)

A few things we've noticed regarding SotO:
Literally every class will be able to use a sword
Engineers will be the only class unable to use a staff
Engineers and Elementalists will be the only classes unable to use an axe
Revenants and Rangers will be the only classes unable to use a gun
A few things we suspect will happen near or after SotO's release:
The price of Zap, Bolt, Dragon's Fang, and Aurene's Fang will surge by a prominent degree
The price of Legend, Bifrost, Dragon's Insight, and Aurene's Insight will likewise surge
The price of Tooth of Frostfang, Frostfang, Dragon's Rending, Aurene's Rending, Chaos Gun, Quip, Dragon's Argument, and Aurene's Argument will potentially see a surge as well
Any items that are needed to specifically craft the above items, as well as the Gen 2 legendary sword, staff, axe, and gun might see a slight uptick in price. Such as the dyes needed to craft the Legend rising a few copper as one example.
Things we really hope will happen:
Everyone starts making memes bullying Engineers because they can't figure out how to use a big stick properly

my gw2 commander is a ranger, very interested in animals since her youth. she had this habit of feeding ravens that entered their compound with stray little bits of her own rations, and her bandmates used to laugh at her for it, but they stopped finding it so funny when she grew into this 10 ft tall hulking behemoth of a charr leader with a loyal raven that would peck peoples eyes out at her command. she always firmly believed the elder dragons should be put down (she grew up in a world fraught by their destruction) she also found them undeniably fascinating as like ultra animals. part of the reason people took her specifically into the dragon initiative was because they were like uhhh you know stuff about creatures right? but the truth was most of the insight she could provide in that area was pretty much nullified by the fact that dragons were unlike anything she had ever experienced before. their behavior, their internal anatomy, the very nature of their existence & how nature bent around it. sure, you could have insights like ‘kralkatorrik is exhibiting hunting behavior towards aurene’ or ‘dragons are hungry and can be compelled toward ley lines, a source of food for them’, but those observations were nothing you’d need a professional to make. before aurene’s egg hatched, and had already by then mystically assigned the commander as its champion, my commander was like i won’t understand this dragon, either. and then aurene ate fish and would sleep in warm patches of sunlight and stretched like a cat

continuing the musing, here’s one of the scenarios i like to rotate in my mind regarding the present-day sylvari:
Tumblr media
my druid, éirwynn, was once very passionate about ventari’s teaching and the sanctity of the dream. her early years roughly parallel the sylvari personal story (shield of the moon), and she was the one who killed the Shadow of the Dragon. during HoT she was bitterly disillusioned and heartbroken that the truth of their origins had been kept from the sylvari, and when all was said and done she severed herself from the dream and sought a new path & purpose.
a priory scholar and always an ambitious thinker, she is organizing a group of soundless in a new political/philosophical movement that seeks to produce both a treatise on sylvari moral conduct that is an alternative to ventari, and a model of society & governance that is an alternative to the dream and the authority of the firstborn. she is hardcore (for better or worse) about the rights & responsibilities of the individual, about the free exchange of ideas, and about free will. she hopes to win over followers of both the dream and the nightmare to help find balance in self-determination; it’s going okay but it’s both too radical and too academic for most ‘vari to be interested.
building on research she did on the unchained risen in Siren’s Landing, she is committed to helping the mordrem regain their sense of self and find their own way forward. by now, i think she’s probably moved at least part of her community into the heart of maguuma to both facilitate this and to chase the whispers of sylvari born from other trees. i can also see her consulting with Pact allies to learn from & offer insight into other populations recovering from Dragon corruption, but a sticking point there remains her intense wariness of Aurene and the Crystal Bloom.
she still mourns for the connection to her siblings & their collective knowledge that she felt in the dream, but ultimately sees the Pale Mother as a source of undue influence that clouds dreamers’ ability to make their own choices and live on their own terms. the compulsive power of the Wyld Hunt is especially problematic from her perspective. that her Wyld Hunt had something to do with the elder dragons was always clear to her, and the firstborn and Pale Tree encouraged her to devote her life to defeating them as part of the Pact. when she heard mordremoth’s call, however, she was suddenly struck by the sense that what she had felt might actually have been an inborn calling to complete a task for the dragon all along. she and her colleagues hope to develop a reliable method for sylvari to cope with the tremendous internal drive to follow a Hunt that does not require the Hunt’s progression or completion, and to share this knowledge as widely as they can.

Just some ramblings for Branded Champion AU, right in the climax of the Dragonfall arc... With some EoD lore spoilers. I finished Kralkatorrik's Insight and I had some feels and thoughts.
A heart-to-heart conversation between the scholar ex-commander Alexander Rufus, and the Elder Dragon that used to be his master, grudgingly so.
--
When the spear struck the Branded Elder's heart, Alexander's vision was filled rainbow hues and the hum of magic. But then, it was like he was isolated from the rest of reality, in someone's mind. The rainbow hues faded to a familiar dull purple.
It was a silent, suffocating void, yet it still had the remnants of magic. Branded magic.
"Why have you brought me here?" He called out. If he was here, then Kralkatorrik must be nearby. This was his mind. Perhaps the remains, but it was still his.
"My champion."
Alex clicked his tongue at the title. "I am no one's champion. Not anymore. Not yours. Not... Aurene's."
"And that is fine, no? You, unrestrained by the shackles that have bound us all."
"What is the point you're trying to say, Kralkatorrik?" The fog lifted, just slightly, and Alex could make out a human shape. A very, familiar human shape. Carrying a fan in his hand, he stepped forward. Alex's breath caught in his throat.
"You... you're that scholar..."
"Long time no see, little Rufus. I see you've grown far beyond my expectations."
Memories of the past long gone flashed in Alex's mind. Days when he had been part of the isolated settlement centuries ago, when the wandering scholar came and taught him magic. His fists grabbed the collar of the scholar whom he had admired, who he searched for painstakingly but never found any traces of.
"Why?! Why is it you?!" He demanded, shaking the scholar- Kralkatorrik. "It was because of you I grew such a strong interest in magic! You trained me! Why did you do it?! If you hadn't, I would have never left the settlement, never become Branded, never bore a grudge against you or figured out there was an underlying problem in Tyria!"
You might not be dead, goes unsaid.
Alex didn't want Kralkatorrik to live and keep tormenting others but…
He didn't understand why Kralkatorrik raised him. In a sense, one could say that Kralkatorrik raised his own killer.
"If it was not you, it would have been another to bring about my downfall." Kralkatorrik replied, grasping Alex's hand and pulling his grip off, "It would have happened, one way or another."
"Still-!"
"I saw a future without me. But I also saw… far beyond that;" Kralkatorrik turned his gaze upwards, as if looking to the distant skies. "I saw… emptiness. Not a blocking fog, but emptiness. Void. Nothing left."
Kralkatorrik turned his gaze, intense as Alex had remembered, onto him. "I fear not the end nor my demise. But… I do worry. Worry… for the future of my family. For… mother. She will suffer, because of us. My... fellow Elders."
"My downfall is necessary. Perhaps things would have gone the same if I never reached out to you. But… I saw, in your future. You were Tyria's best hope."
Alex looked bewildered. "So you searched for me? Even if it resulted in your death? In the other elder dragons' deaths?!"
Kralkayorrik gave him another stern look. "Sometimes… the end, justifies the means, I suppose that is what you mortals are fond of saying."
"But they are your family!"
"And we were harming each other, going at each other's throats." Kralkatorrik sighed. "Things were simpler when we were children. But not anymore."
"We have grown and created a vicious cycle that will eat at this world's nature and core if not stopped. There would be no Tyria for anyone to live on, if we were not stopped. To sustain it, I chose another way out."
"The Aetherians. You knew."
"I always did. I knew it was a matter of time before I lost my senses. And I did. I killed my own child, and tried to murder my own grandchild." Kralkatorrik shook his head and looked to Alex again.
"I may have been losing my sanity, but it does not excuse my actions. Take care of her for me, Alexander Rufus. And... try your best to aid her, and my mother. We could do little for mother when we began to fall to our instincts and bear our fangs at her. But you... you could do more. I chose you... because you were the brightest spark. You, are Tyria's best shot at surviving the incoming storm."
With that, Kralkatorrik bowed, and Alex's vision was once again filled with purples before rainbows.
I am sorry, my champion.
