idk why it took me like two days to post this after finishing but here’s Russ and Del for the No Band AU! havent decided if i’m going with bald or scruffy for Russ. here’s some more wacky facts:
Russ was planning on majoring in audio engineering, but ended up skipping out on college after Del died because he didn’t feel super safe about getting his education lol
currently he’s an independent hip-hop producer in collaboration with Del, the world’s first ghost rapper. Later he also constructs Sound Check, a robotic hybrid of sick beats, crazy samples and generally dope musical skills.
Russ is really into gay subculture, he’s currently coming to terms with his own sexuality and he’s very passionate about his identity as a fem gay, which this AU takes place around the early to mid 2000′s so that was a pretty strong take to have.
thus it should come as little shock that his favorite movie of all time is “Tongues Untied”
his involvement with 2D, Noodle and Murdoc ended up being the result of accidentally playing witness to a fistfight when he really just wanted to ask Noodle to record some cool riffs for his beats.
Del has him on the run from the Grim Reaper because, quote, “I can’t go to the afterlife! I got bars to drop!”
Even after all of these years, Russel still finds himself followed by all sorts of ghosts and ghouls that don’t know when to quit. He really is just a magnet for that kind of thing.
He has an unfortunate alcohol dependency -- it deepens his sleep, and when he’s not on the sauce he has just the worst nightmares.
Still, he’s a surprisingly stable person, all things considered. The weekly panic attacks keep him on edge, though.
his hot sauce brand of choice is Jamaica Hell Fire, but he keeps a stocked fridge. it’s actually a terrible habit since he can’t really afford all of this hot sauce and he’s the only one who can eat it.

Audio
The last concert where the characters talk to the audience from the Phase 1 tour! It’s nearly identical to the Seattle Paramount gig with very few changes.
Slight NSFW warning for faint Murdoc panting lol.
Audio taken from Blur Archive Project’s archive folder (with their permission), which you can find for yourself here:

murdoc’s voice doesn’t actually sound the way it does in interviews and shit. if you listen to the pirate radio recordings and some podcasts, maybe a few interviews here and there, you’ll hear his voice sound much softer and smoother. that’s his real voice, the gruffer voice is put on for the sake of intimidation. it keeps people from getting too close and he’s been doing it for years. it did actually fuck up his voice a bit but he can somewhat sing like david bowie. he only lets 2D hear it tho
Okay a compromise (because I LIVE for Murdoc just naturally having a horrendous voice and part of what makes him lovable is how he lacks any conventional pleasantries)!!
He totally has a softer, gentler tone! You’re right and you should say it! Like in the famous “love you, okay? love you” line from that one Pirate Radio (is that what it’s from? I don’t know my Gorillaz audio very well) clip. He can sound really gentle and even kind of sweet?? And yeah, maybe he’ll speak that way when he’s feeling especially vulnerable.
Like one of the first times Stu ever spends the night in Murdoc’s Winnebago, the next morning, Stu is still half-asleep and he’ll hear Murdoc say something like “I know my dad never wanted me. But y’know...sometimes I wonder if my mum was ever excited to have me...”
And it’s hard for Stu to conceive that this soft, low tone is coming from Murdoc. He just reaches out blindly, till their hands find each other. His silence serves as invitation for Murdoc to keep talking to himself. And maybe Murdoc will continue to murmur questions about his identity in this halting, hushed tone. Maybe he’ll clam up again. Who can say?
Is he totally putting on an act around the press? Abso-fuckin’-lutely he is! But! I do like to think that he just has a low, gravelly voice. He just plays up its--ahem--cartoonishness to stand out during interviews and videos. Gotta keep himself famous!
Also the funny noises he makes are self-stimming vocal tics and you can’t change my mind! Uuuwhwa-uh-ohhh mmmMMMMMMotorrollaaaa hawhawhaw!
