A letter from General Jean Dominique Compans to Marshal Jean Lannes in early 1806, sold at an auction. It refers to the time shortly after the battle of Austerlitz when Lannes, furious about something, left the army without permission and stomped off to France.
I’ve translated some of the sale’s description:
A long and beautiful friendly letter addressed to the marshal who, over a disagreement with the emperor, had abruptly left the Grande Armée after the campaign of Austerlitz.
The reason for this mood swing remains unknown, but is probably related to what Lannes felt was a lack of acknowledgment of him. General Compans, Marshal Lannes' chief of staff in the Austerlitz campaign, had known him intimately since their campaign service in 1794 in the army of the Pyrénées-Orientales. The general gave him news of the high officers of their acquaintance, including Mortier, who had just succeeded Lannes, and Soult, whose chief of staff Compans had just become ("he did not lose an opportunity to smile at me. But what a smile!"):
This is not correct, by the way. Compans only was transferred to Soult’s staff some time later, after some hackling between Berthier and Soult (Soult had requested Morand, which was refused). I wish there was more about Soult’s attitude towards Compans at this time! The website then quotes some long passages directly from the general’s letter:
In the first four days of my arrival in Vienna, there were two parades at Schowbron [palace of Schönbrunn] which I attended. I saw myself surrounded, grabbed, left, taken back by a hundred people who all tried either to extract from me details of the circumstances which had motivated your departure, or to find out to what extent I could express my displeasure at not being included in the list of promotions. My answers were cautious. I was too well on my guard to be surprised. If I met some courtiers who could not conceal the joy they felt at your departure, how many commendable people have I not seen who feel the deepest regret, who ardently desire your reconciliation and who hope that it will immediately follow the return of the Emperor to Paris.
Among these are certainly Prince Murat, the Minister of War [Louis-Alexandre Berthier], General Oudinot, General Marescot and General Andreossi.
Great source for who Lannes was friends with at the time, other than Compans himself, of course, who obviously cared a lot. Also, seeing French butchering of German names never gets old.
I will not speak to you about the opinion of the army. It is the voice of the people: it always does justice to merit... The Emperor before his departure for Munich, where it seems he is still, granted his army many promotions and decorations of the Legion of Honour. One of his decrees fixes the number of decorations granted to each division and to each general staff. This work is postponed for the divisions Suchet and Gazan and for the staff of the 5th corps... As for promotion... nothing indicates that your corps was treated less well than the others...
I guess that is a bit of an (implied) reproach? The nominations for 5th corps would already be fixed if the commander of said corps had not taken off in a huff? Or were there other problems with the nominations?
[He then cites those whose promotions are publicly known: Generals Beker, Dupas, Kirgener, the future Generals Legendre d'Harvesse, Subervie, Vedel, etc.]. It is assured that Generals St-Hilaire, Vendame and Legrand will be grand cordons and that General Oudinot will be marshal of the Empire. Is a marshal's baton equivalent to three grand cordons? It is a question that General Suchet could settle, nobody knows better than him how to evaluate all these graces & takes a more lively interest in their dispensation. He cannot conceal his regret at not having yet obtained any of them. He is one of those who ardently desire your reconciliation. Is it for him or for you that he intends to obtain the advantages, I shall refrain from deciding that...
This passage had me laughing out loud because of its characterization of Suchet. The three generals Saint-Hilaire, Vandamme [btw, great to see he also butchers French names] and Legrand are of course the three generals of Soult’s corps who led the attack on Pratzen during the battle of Austerlitz and whom Compans expects to receive the »grand cordon« of the Legion d’Honneur. Whereas Oudinot was one of »Lannes’ men«, so-to-speak, so Compans here weighs the alleged marshal's baton for Oudinot (which he did not receive until three years later) against the three decorations for Soult's generals.
General Oudinot had the passage of the bridge of Vienna drawn. Your action is so well characterized there that one would think that this piece of drawing was made only to recall it in its brightness. General Mathieu Dumas intends to mention it in the history of the campaign. He seems to be fully committed of it...
Which can only refer to the Tabor Bridge incident. That feat should indeed have received much more attention, I’m fully with you on that one, mon général!
In all, it seems that people at the time at least suspected like the main reason why Lannes had left was jealousy and a rivalry with Soult (which I find fascinating and which would makes Lannes’ behaviour a bit later, if he indeed worked his ass off for Soult’s profit at Jena before the battle, all the more generous). The memoirs of Thiard pretty much indicate the same thing.
