Interesting, this Atom does not a have a human like heart, I don't remember much about the 2003 series but I think one of Astro characteristics that made him special was having a human like heart

As excited as I am about the PLUTO anime I have to admit I really H A T E the direction they gave the actors for some of the robots, the common and older models. It super bothers me that the patrol cop Robby's wife, and Brau1589 have such distinctly human emotive tones. Part of what's so impactful about their roles in the story should rightly be how they manage to express themselves thru ideas in direct contrast to their lack of overt humanizing qualities. They're supposed to be anchors to one end of a spectrum to help orient the humanity of the more obviously humanoid robots like Gesicht and Atom, and the other Worlds Greatest Robots existing opposite them.
Like... making Robby's wife sound sad ruins her whole character. There is supposed to be a beautiful quiet melancholy when she recalls the alien experience of seeing a human boy grieve for his dead dog, and with the new orienting context of losing her husband. Like a single tiny ripple disrupting still water's face, it gains power and impact for how singular and precise a disruption it is of a seemingly unbreakable calm. Making her expressly sad about the whole thing from the first scene ruins that by failing to set the precedent that gives the small but extraordinary exception to that baseline of cold mechanical stoicism meaning. The whole thing becomes overly sentimental rather than genuinely emotive. Sure it still achieves being generally "sad" but it should be fucking heart crushing when she says "I think I get it now..." because she finally understands what it means to lose someone she loved.
