Watching your wife play for her country would never bore you, not even when it was an 8 – 0 win and you barely get to see her on the screen. Your daughter, however, was bored. Isla had woken up bright and early as it was a Sunday. 

While you would travel the world for Mackenzie and her games, pulling Isla out of school was difficult, so you stayed home for the Asian Olympic Qualifiers – watching from home as well as you could. Kick-off was at 07:10 in the morning for the two of you in the UK, but the small blonde in your lap was Macca's good luck charm, so a short phone call before was mandatory. 

It was six in the morning when Isla started jumping on your bed. “Wake up! Wake up! Game time! Mo- Ahhh!” you had snatched her out of the air, cuddling her close to you. “Game time later baby, give your mommy some cuddles.” With all her might the brunette girl wrangled herself out of your hold, sitting herself down on your chest. “Call Mama?” With a defeated sigh you grabbed your phone from the bedside table, knowing that your daughter would not give in until she had talked to her mom. “Here baby, you call her.” 

The five-year-old knew just enough about phones, to know where she could call your wife and put it on speaker. Today the young girl decides to go for a Facetime tough at six in the morning – how nice. Especially when you had barely gotten any sleep, worrying about your wife. 

It rang a couple of times before Mackenzie picked up, being greeted by her daughter’s face, way too close to the camera. “Good morning Bubba! How’d ya sleep?” Excited noises left Isla’s lips as she saw her mom on a dark bus, she had pulled the curtains by her seat close, trying to concentrate. “Good Mama! You?” 

“I slept well babe, where is mommy?” Your child threw the phone at you before she slipped under the blanket, joining you in the warmth of it. “Oh, now you wanna cuddle, hmm?” Mackenzie watched with a fond smile as her carbon copy cuddled into your chest, with you holding the phone now, being able to see everything. 

“Hi, beautiful.” She would never get tired of how blushy you got, whenever she complimented you in such a vulnerable state – even after six years of marriage and a child. “Hi, baby. How are you?” 

With Isla nearly falling asleep on you, Macca and you quietly talked until the bus arrived at the stadium “Isla? Baby? I have to go now. Mama loves you, have fun!” A tired wave at the camera was all that she got, blowing you a kiss as well.  

After making coffee and cleaning up a little you pulled Isla to the couch, wrapping both of you in blankets and handing her a breakfast sandwich. “Is Mama going to play?” Just seconds later they showed the Tillies in the tunnel, Mackenzie in pink, a little girl holding her hand. 

“Oi! That’s my Mama!” You could not help but burst with laughter, the little girl appalled to see someone else holding her mother’s hand. “That is her Mascot baby. You were one as well, do you remember?” 

Isla had been a mascot plenty of times, for her mother, Sam, Steph, Caitlin, Alanna, and even Courtney when she had joined Leicester City. 

After the two of you had marveled at the dress the singer of the Philippines national anthem was wearing, it was time for the Australian anthem. As fast as she could Isla was out of the blankets, standing with a hand on her heart, belting the anthem with the singer on the TV. Sneakily you took a video of it, immediately sending it to Mackenzie who was laughing next to Sam, behind the singer. 

“Look there’s Auntie Lani! Oh and Stephy, And Cait!” The young girl could not help herself, stopping her singing and waving at her aunties instead. 

The stadium was filled, and your eyes could not help but tear up a little, seeing your wife stand there, making her country and family proud in front of so many people. “Where’s Mama?” Isla was now back at your side as she tried to find her mother’s pink kit in the colorful mix. But Mackenzie was nowhere to be seen as the rest of the Matilda’s tried to take the team picture, looking for her as well. The commentator explained that she had gone to warm up in goal, forgetting the picture - but she sprinted back just in time. 

Seconds before kick-off Isla sprinted off to her room, returning with bright blue hair ribbons and a hairbrush, wordlessly gesturing you to style her hair just like Raso’s. Once you were done you also sent a picture of that to your wife, knowing that she would show the girls everything that Isla did. 

Caitlin’s first shot on goal was saved by the keeper, Isla next to you restless in her seat. And just a few minutes later the Philippines had a long shot at goal, your daughter jumping up and down. “Get up Mama!” Mackenzie had fallen on her way to save the ball, but luckily it did not meet the back of the net. 

It was Mary Fowler who put the Matilda’s in front with a gorgeous goal in the 14th minute. That first goal set off a series of goals and by the end of the first half, the Matilda’s were leading with five goals. 

Isla however had dozed off as her excitement had lessened during the game. While she loved all of her aunties with all her heart, she was only watching for one person. Her Mama. But with such a lead and the Philippines’ not being a real threat Mackenzie was barely seen. Once or twice, she collected a loose ball, sending it back but otherwise, it was an entirely calm game for the goalkeeper. The second half brought three more goals and a hat trick for both Sam and Caitlin. 

With nothing else to do in the day you decided, to let the young girl sleep until Macca called, which was three hours later. She was back in the Team hotel, freshly showered and alone in her room. “There she is! My beautiful wife!” As expected, you blushed, hiding your face in a blanket on the couch. 

Isla apparently heard your phone ring, as she burst into the room, now fully awake. “Mama, you won!” Your wife could barely contain herself at the cute smile her daughter gave her – a smile that reminded her so much of you it was scary. “I did, Baby! Did you watch me?” 

Isla’s hair was a mess, the ribbon had nearly fallen out by this point. She had always been an aggressive sleeper. “I did, but I got bored.” Mackenzie could not help but laugh at the carelessness in her daughter’s voice. “Little Miss was asleep before halftime, huh?” 

“Huh! How mean of you! Such a mean Mommy didn’t even wake you up.” The small brunette that was jumping in her seat rolled her little eyes at her mother’s sarcasm, well accustomed to it by now. 

“You fell when the ball got to you, Mama.” Mackenzie was flabbergasted “So you fall asleep but that’s what you see?” The two of them bantered back and forth in true mother-daughter fashion, but you couldn’t help but admire them. 

And you were so happy to have them, so much fun in a home that you loved.

So How To Get Your Favorite Gymnast to the Olympics... a primer

Now that we have the last of the 2023 Worlds Qualification events over it's time to go through what comes next... how do they get to the Olympics?

2022 Worlds - The top three teams from the team final earned a trip to Paris - USA, GBR, CAN.

2023 Worlds - The next 9 teams in team qualification (excluding the three from 1) go to Paris

2023 Worlds - Teams 13-15 in team qualification earn 1 non-nominative spot at Paris. That is a spot that the federation can assign however they wish and it counts against the 3 maximum that a country can send to the Olympics if they did not qualify a team.

2023 Worlds - 14 gymnasts with the top AA scores not any country that qualified a team in points 1 and 2, 1 per country get a nominative spot to the Olympics. That is it's for them by name and if they end up not going to the Olympics it goes to the next person in line their country can no reassign them. If France qualifies a team (which is likely unless the French federation manages to destroy itself between now and October) then this number goes up to 15 because they get an automatic slot as host country for 1 individual.

2023 Worlds - The highest ranked gymnast from each apparatus final that is not from a country that qualified a team in points 1 or 2, and did not qualify in the AA QF described in point 4 gets a nominative spot. If there are no gymnasts in the final that fit that criteria they go the apparatus qualification list.

2023 Pan American Games/2024 European Championships/2024 Asian Championships/2024 African Championships/2024 Oceania Championships - The top AA gymnast from qualification who is not from a team that qualified in point 1 or 2, and who did not qualify individually at Worlds.

2024 World Cups - Two gymnasts per Apparatus based on points from the 4 events in Feb-April 2024. Each apparatus is 1 per country so one country can not take both uneven bars slots but they could take 1 slot from three different apparatus.

Things to know... the order matters. If you have qualified in one of the earlier numbered steps you don't count in the later ones. So if say Kovacs Zsofia qualifies in the AA and is in the bars final at 2023 Worlds it's the AA slot that she takes not the bars one. If a country qualifies three people through 2023 Worlds then the later qualification steps wont be open to them because they've already gotten their three.

So what does that mean for your favs?

If we project the results from 2022 Worlds and use them as a guide for 2023 Worlds the teams would be USA, CHN, GBR, FRA, CAN, NED, BRA, AUS, ITA, BEL, JPN, GER. That doesn't mean these will be the qualifiers (other than the USA, GBR, and CAN who are already qualified) but they're who you expect to be likely.

The three countries that would have taken the 13-15 slots were KOR, MEX, and HUN. I think those are going to be your likely spoilers.

Now let's move to some darlings from small feds (or former Americans in new hats in some cases). Oksana Chusovitina is currently only qualified to worlds on vault and uneven bars so those are the only events she can participate on. So you say, she's got a good chance of getting the vault spot from worlds.

Well... no I don't think she's the odds on favorite. YEO Seojeong (KOR) would have taken that spot if it was awarded based on last year's worlds. Now KOR is sitting in that spoiler spot as a team so maybe they make the Olympics as a team and then she's off the table. Yeo has also done the AA in the past but she's not Korea's best AAer on paper so I would expect one of her team mates to qualify through the AA.

Chuso's best path to her 9th Olympics is likely the 2024 World Cup series but there are a number of small fed vault specialists who will be very competitive with her and I doubt we'll have any real sense what her chances are until we see who qualifies at Worlds. For instance RASMUSSEN Camille (DEN) could beat Chuso in that series but she could also qualify through the AA at Worlds and be out of that pool. And who knows if the Russians will be battling out in that World Cup pool.

Similarly I think NEMOUR Kaylia (ALG) is the most likely person to take a bars qualification out of Worlds but she also could qualify in the AA and unlike Yeo she doesn't have team mates who may qualify above her. Nemour also has a clear advantage if she's still looking to qualify at the 2024 African Championships. I think that provided she stays healthy she is a safe bet to make it to Paris.

I think floor and beam are pretty up in the air.

So now we get to the messy questions about former Americans now competing for other countries. If you map this qualification process onto 2022 worlds the AA score of the last qualifier for Paris would be 48.866. I expect that to be slightly higher at 2023 Worlds because there were a number of AAers who didn't do the AA at 2022 Worlds who will have incentives to do so here. I expect the cut off to be somewhere between 50-51.

Here are what some other names to note got at their continental championships this year in the AA.

ESCALERA Natalia (MEX) - 53.266. She will likely qualify through the AA at Worlds.

MORENO Alexa (MEX) - 51.600. Moreno has competition for the best potential AA score on the Mexican team (see Escalera) but if the fields repeated themselves at the Pan American Games she would be in the position to be the AA qualifier for the Pan American Union. If she doesn't well she goes into the thunder dome that is the 2024 Apparatus World Cup.

IRFANALUTHFI Rifda (INA) - 51.298. An AA score that I think should be in the right range to qualify, from a small fed with no competing team mates. I think if she repeats her performance from Asian champs at Worlds she has a good shot. Similarly assuming China qualifies a team and Korea qualifies 3 gymnasts through 2023 Worlds (both likely) then she's at the moment the most likely individual qualifier out of the 2024 Asian championships if she doesn't qualify at Worlds. But there is a big if. She got an 9.833 beam score at Worlds last year....

ROOSKRANTZ Caitlin (RSA) - 50.632. She came in second to Nemour at African champs, so assuming that Nemour will likely qualify in some way at Worlds then Roozkrantz has a good shot at qualifying through 2024 African champs if she doesn't do so at Worlds.

FINNEGAN Aleah (PHI) - 50.399. She should qualify at worlds, especially if she manages not to fall twice on bars like she did at Asian champs. I honestly think a lot will depend on what rotation she has to go to bars because I suspect a lot of the issues the Philippines had at Asian champs related to going to bars in the 4th rotation. If she doesn't qualify at Worlds she has a decent shot at the 2024 Asian Champs but I honestly expect her to get this done at Worlds.

BARROS Sydney (PUR) - 50.234. She also falls in the sweet spot of maybe she qualifies at Worlds maybe she just misses. She'll get a second shot at Pan Am Games a month later if she misses out.

ABDELSALAM Jana (EGY) - 49.832. She came in third at African Champs but we start getting in the iffy range for scores to qualify and there are on paper better AAers in her continental union.

DARIES Naveen (RSA) - 49.533. A repeat of what I said about Abdelsalam. She's in the cut off range but she has the disadvantage of being the likely second South African AAer so her best chance is if Nemour and Rooskrantz qualify at Worlds and then she has a good shot to fight out that 2024 African champs slot.

KVAMME Kylee Ann (PHI) - 48.765. She's not qualifying at worlds because even if she falls in the right range (and her score doesn't suggest she will) then Finnegan will 1 per country her out of the pool. She also has no chance of qualifying at 2024 Asian Champs as there are many Asian gymnasts from small feds that are better AAers. Yes she fell on bars but she just does not have the difficulty to be competitive.

BROWN Lynnzee (HAI) - 48.100. I'm going to be honest... she's going to have a tough road. She needs more difficulty to be in contention at Worlds or at the PAG. There are a number of small fed AAers in the Pan American union who scored higher than her at Pan Am Champs.

ELSADEK Sandra (EGY) - 46.699. She has no chance of qualifying for the Olympics. I hope she enjoys her Worlds experience.

MALABUYO Emma Lauren (PHI). She didn't do the AA at Asian champs so can't go to worlds but I've seen people ask about her. Her path to the Olympics is limited. She can win the AA at Asian Champs... but when was the last time she did the AA? She can also get a spot at the 2024 World Cups and I actually think she could increase the difficulty on her floor to be an outside shot there. The problem is ... will the Philippines pay to send her (and the judge) to those world cups. And will she want to miss 6 weeks of the NCAA season to do so?

If I was to take a stab in the dark I suspect that Korea, Hungary, and Mexico will all have 3 gymnasts at the Olympics and that Romania will have at least 2. But in what configurations I don't know.

Hi hi I just saw all the post about qualifiers and why I personally think it’s best the way it is if my opinion matters. I think it’s import to have the qualifiers from each federation this is because if it went by fifa rankings some teams would NEVER even stand a chance at going to the Olympics, this could be because they joined the fifa rankings later then others countries or are less funded. Yes we want to see the best but when that means you would almost never see a South American team outside of Brazil or an Asian team besides the big four which in some cases don’t even rank top 16 then I don’t think it’s best, you wouldn’t see really any teams from Oceana or Africa either and that doesn’t really embody what the Olympics are. It’s important to remember the Olympics are about coming together and if some countries are excluded not because they tried and didn’t win but because they simply could never make top 16 fifa rankings isn’t really fair on them. It would also be so European dominate that again it no longer embodies the meaning of the Olympics.

i'd honestly have to back track and agree with you here.

i totally didn't consider that the olympics were more about coming together as a united world and representing that and instead more focused on the olympics being like the world cup where it's the best of the best typa beat (which now looking back is a poor judgement/assumption to make).

but yeah no, reading this, it makes sense and i feel like that's the key difference between the two. but then that makes me question, does it even mean a lot to win the olympics? like more so than the world cup? that's another chat for another day but yeah no honestly valid asf point!

i feel like a good in between for the two could be to add more spots bc like the mens tourney has 24 teams and i feel like that would provide a better holistic representation of woso around the world but thats just my two cents there. just because there's so many good teams that can also make it that way and all the continents could then be represented more fairly (because like even thinking about the wcc teams like jamaica killed it and they could totally deserve a spot yk?) but anyways yeah, nah thanks for sending this in mate! deadass actually changed my perspective so that's dope!

personal key takeaway: wc is more focused on a competitive nature and olympics is more focused on inclusion/community with competitive mixed in between. not to hate on one or the other, they're just two different tourney's with different goals in mind at the end of the day

This effectively cuts off Russia’s last chance to qualify to Worlds this year. There had been quite a lot of noise about them being allowed to compete in the Asian continental championship, but that takes place in mid-June. The hangup was reportedly an inability to agree on a definition of neutral.

Russia’s remaining qualifying opportunities for the Olympics will be earning the all-around quota from a continental championship and the Apparatus World Cup series next year (which will be the top 2 per apparatus). They will only be able to qualify a total of 3 individuals, and in the case of apparatus qualification, only 1 per apparatus per country.

Unless of course the FIG decides to bend some rules, but from the sound of the reporting in the article, the Europeans have stood firm.

England

FIFA Ranking: 4

Reputation:

England is my favorite to win the World Cup. In 2022 they won the European Womens’ championship, cementing their position as a possible winner of the 2023 World Cup. Despite a few major injuries, the Lionesses are in fine form, and have a really solid core group of women with a good mix of veterans and young (but not inexperienced) talent. Their players mostly play at home in the FAWSL, possibly the best women's league in the world. The FAWSL also attracts international talents, so many of these players are already playing with and against their competitors, learning their styles and skills. Their coach Sarina Wiegman has a great record with England, and with the Netherlands in the 2019 World Cup where they made the final. 

Player Pool:

There are a couple veterans that deserve a call out, like defender Lucy Bronzeand midfielder Jordan Nobbs, but the energy and heart that makes this England squad different from past rosters comes in a group of younger players. Lauren Hemp, Alessia Russo, and Chloe Kelly will be playing in their first World Cup, and have been in outstanding form for their English clubs and at the international level. 

2019 WWC performance:

England did well in group play, led in scoring by Ellen White, who really came into her own this World Cup. They notably defeated previous runner up, Japan. They had perhaps the easiest path to the semifinals, taking on Cameroon and Norway. England was unlucky to come up against the USA in the semifinals instead of the finals, but they followed up their loss to the USA with a loss to Sweden, unlike 2015.

China

FIFA Ranking: 14

Reputation:

China used to be really good. Asia Games champions a couple times, deep runs into World Cups and olympics, but no Gold Medals.In the past, they have recruited top basketball, track, and volleyball players to play soccer in order to be faster and taller than their opponents. It’s an interesting strategy that hasn’t...not...worked. But it hasn’t really worked, either. They are showing an international comeback, including beating South Korea  in the 2022 Asian Cup Finals. They have kept up with teams close to them in rankings, but will struggle against any team in the top 10. 

Player Pool:

All of the players on the team except one  play in China, a league that I do not follow, but one player does play in the USA for Racing Louisville FC, Wang Shuang. Their team looks very different than the squad that represented China in 2019, so standout players are generally unpredictable. I would expect veteran forward Wang Shanshan and defender Lou Jiahui to feature in starting lineups.

2019 WWC performance:

China didn’t play horribly, but they weren’t the team seen in previous years either. They sneaked into the group stage after a loss to Germany by salvaging a tie against Spain. They were eliminated by dark horse Italy in the round of sixteen. In total, they only scored 1 goal in all four games, which means their defense maintained two shutouts and limited opponents’ goals quite well. 

Denmark

FIFA Ranking: 18

Reputation: 

If any group has the potential for a ranking upset, it is this one. Denmark, although ranked below China, has been testing their mettle against all of Europe, and have shown themselves to be a worthy inclusion to the World Cup. It is not their first, in fact it is their fourth World Cup, even though they haven’t qualified since 2007. They have been on the edge of qualifying for World Cups in the past couple years, and  now the expanded field of teams has allowed them back in the cloche, and I don’t see them wasting their opportunity. 

Player Pool:

The Denmark roster boasts players across all of the major leagues in Europe–England, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and Sweden. Captain Pernille Harder plays for Chelsea FC, one of the best of the best clubs in the world, and is the top all-time goalscorer in Danish football history. Forwards Mille Gejl Jensen and Rikke Madsen have found success at their American club, North Carolina Courage, in the 2023 summer season, which likely helped them onto the roster. 

2019 WWC performance:

Did not qualify

Haiti

FIFA Ranking: 55

Reputation: 

Haiti has never played in a world tournament, and their narrow qualification was a very proud moment for the entire country, and for the larger CONCACAF region. They will probably struggle against the other teams in their group, but it will be valuable experience for the players going forward.

Player Pool:

Melchie Dumorney, midfielder, won the CONCACAF qualifying young player of the tournament, and scored the two decisive goals against Chile to qualify for the World Cup. There are a few players that play college soccer in the USA, but the majority of them play for smaller clubs in France, which does give them experience playing european-style soccer.

Did not qualify

After very silent months in the summer of 2016, we got news that Yuzuru was back in training, and a bit later, that he would skate to two new programs in the upcoming 2016/17 season. Yuzu chose 'Let's Go Crazy' by Prince for his new short program, which was again choreographed by Jeff Buttle. For his new free program he chose Japanese contemporary classical music, View of Silence and Asian Dream Song by Joe Hisaishi and he named his program 'Hope and Legacy'. It was chorographed by Shae-Lynn Bourne.

Yuzu started the season at the Autumn Classic International in Canada where he became the first man who landed the quadruple Loop at a competition when he landed it in his short program. We could see his quad Loops at galas before, but it was finally time to introduce it at competitions, too. It was Yuzu's own decision (as opposed to Brian Orser's), and later it turned out that it was a very smart decision from him.

His new SP was fun, intricate, with extremely difficult step sequence, or spins. Even if the 4Lo was a new jump for Yuzu, he put it in both the SP and FS. He also changed to 4T-3T combination to 4S-3T in the SP. His new free program was beautiful, elegant, and very complex from start to finish with great choreography, transitions in and out of the elements and great spins as well. Yuzu increased the difficulty of his jumps, he not just added 4Lo, but he had 4 quads and 2 triple Axels overall, from which there were two quad Salchows, the second one in a combination in the second half of the program. The triple Axels were also in the second half.

In the Grand Prix Series, Yuzu won the NHK Trophy. It was this competition where he changed his white costume in the SP to a purple one, which was even more form fitting than the white costume. The NHK Trophy short programs were in the morning on Friday in Europe so it meant that I had to watch it at my workplace - in secrectly, of course! I still remember vividly when I saw in the warm-up that he had purple pants on, and seconds later he took off the jacket and the top of his costume was also purple. I smiled so much but I had to contain myself there. The program was very rock starish but in a different way than Parisienne Walkways, when Yuzu was still a teenager. The SP was great choice and the costume looked great on him. Not many could wear a costume like that, but Yuzu could do it!

So, at the Grand Prix Final Yuzu became the first (and so far only) male skater who won four consecutive gold medals. His SP was the best there in the season even if the landing from the 4Lo wasn't completely perfect.

Yuzu decided to compete at the Four Continents too, which was held in PyeongChang, in the arena which would host the Olympics in 2018. The last time Yuzu was at 4CC was in 2013. He again collected a silver medal, albeit he would have deserved to win this time. The sudden rise of points, especially the components of the young American Chen raised eyebrows.

I was a bit sad that I couldn't watch Yuzu in person in 2015/16 especially because GPF was held in Barcelona then. So I decided not to miss the opportunity and I traveled to Helsinki for the World Championships to watch Yuzu and cheer for him. It was a really important competition, firstly because it was the qualifying Worlds for the 2018 Olympics and also because Yuzu didn't win in 2015 or 2016 either. The pressure on him was so much.

Helsinki Worlds was the most exciting competition of my life and I won't forget what I saw there. The rollercoster of emotions was overwhelming.

In the SP, Yuzuru kneeled down from the landing after his 4S, so he couldn't add a Triple Toe-loop on it (the 2T he added got invalidated as well), and he was only 5th after the SP. Oh no.

I felt sorry, really sorry for him. I even cried a bit later, because I didn't find it fair after what Yuzu went through in the past months, years. Javier skated a good short program and he got 109 points for it, so the difference was 11 points. Then I remembered that the situation was a bit similar a year before and anything could happen.

On the day of the free skate, snow was falling in the cold streets of Helsinki. I headed to the arena with a newly found optimism, while I was walking I was listening to the epic music of Yuzu's Romeo and Juliet 1 program and I remembered his roaring he made during the program at Worlds 2012. I thought: 'Fight, Yuzu, fight, you can do it!'.

Yuzu skated first in the last group. And what he did on that day will never be forgotten. He was completely in the zone and he laid down the most gorgeous performance ever. Everything was perfection from start to finish, the 4Lo, the spins, the the quad Salchows, the step sequences (the StSq as well as his spins all got level 4), everything he did was in the highest possible quality. The complexity of his program, the elegance of his performance can be barely described with words. It was magnificient and magical. The spectators were in tears, there was standing ovation for Yuzu. He got a new world record for his performance (223.20) which was - despite being the highest score - still a bit underscored compared to what he showed on the ice there. With this fantastic performance, Yuzu finished from 5th to 1st, and he became a two-time World Champion. It was so well deserved for Yuzu! He could bring out his best at such an important competition.

I was so happy and grateful that I could witness this and that I could cheer for Yuzu at this competition.

On the last day, Sunday, I met some photographers from my country who had media accreditation for the competition. One of them was an elderly man, who proudly showed to me that he got a signature from Yuzuru before the gala rehearsal. We had the same flight back home so he gave me Yuzu's signature for the duration of the flight. I was really cautious not to make it dirty etc. (the batter of my camera was empty but I could take some pictures of the signature with my not so good phone). What an end was it for my trip! I was really happy.

After Worlds, Yuzu also competed at World Team Trophy where he won the gold medal for Japan.

This was a very successful season for him. Firstly I was happy that Yuzu came back after his very bad injury and he did so well. The first man who landed the 4Lo, the 4th GPF title, the second Worlds title, two fantastic programs, etc.

I was very looking forward to the Olympic season and I hoped everything would be okay for Yuzu.

When Kyra transferred to Arsenal at the start of the season it was a joined decision, that she would not live alone – and who to better pair her up than with you?

You were the same age, already knowing each other from the national youth teams and while you were an introvert, Kyra was an extrovert. It was a good match – and Katie obviously did not try to set you up.

She would never do that…

Living together was an adventure, that is for sure. It was Kyra’s job to do all the phone calls while you did all the paperwork for the apartment and while the brunette was obnoxiously loud, you would not change it for the world.

But now it felt lonely when the young Aussie was gone, having been called up to represent her country for the Asian Olympic Qualifiers. Whilst you could not be prouder of your new friend, you missed her.

Most of your teammates were gone as well – they had left for the Nations League. With only a few people in training everyone worked harder than you already did, desperate to get some more minutes on the pitch, representing the club.

Alone again, you struggled.

Cooking for one person? Too much work.

Buying groceries for you alone? Waste of money.

And while you forgot to care for yourself, your teammates noticed. And they tried, they really did try to get you to eat at the cafeteria but you were so focused on training that it was of no use.

Kyra returned from National camp when you had an off day, and she half expected you to have cooked something – your love language being acts of service. But even in front of the door, she could tell that something was wrong.

She could not hear any music, not even the TV running as background noise – highly unusual for you.

Just as fast as she had the door open, it fell shut again, a gust of wind pulling it close. It had gotten cold quickly, and it was not just cold outside, but also in your shared living space. Quite the contrast from Australia where she had been just twenty-four hours ago.

In complete darkness, the young Australian felt for the light switch, and as she pressed it the first thing, she saw was the messy living room. This was even more unlike you, who always tidied up after yourself.

“Y/n?” Her call was met with more silence, but after closing the wide-open windows and turning up the radiator she saw the lump of blankets on the couch move.

“Honey?”

No reaction.

Carefully Kyra pulled off blanket after blanket until she was able to see your face. A very sweaty one. “Shit. Let’s get you up.”

While you normally would have told the girl off for swearing, you did not even react – barely hanging onto her shoulders as she dragged you to the bathtub. She did not need to take your temperature to know that you had a fever – so the water was not as warm as you would like it to be, especially not with your high body temperature.

After wrangling you out of your sweaty clothes and into the bath, Kyra called Steph for help who had also just gotten home.

“Okay, you want to get her as dry as possible, her hair as well. Sit her on a chair when you blow dry it. get her into light clothes, no heavy jumpers. Lots of water, ibuprofen, sleep, and cool rags will do the trick.”

You were bibbering in the tub, your body temperature cooling down significantly – and while it took a while Kyra had managed to dry you off she managed to do it – cooing at you in a desperate attempt to calm you down. While you tried to help, falling over as soon as you moved a centimeter was not much use.

Dressing you in one of her shirts, the young Australian managed to get you into her bed, after deciding that your bedding needed to be changed as sweat clung to it.

“Don’t fall asleep honey – need to drink something first.” As fast as she could Kyra had gotten a water bottle and some crackers, practically force-feeding you until you fell asleep.

After placing a cool rag on your forehead, the brunette decided to clean up as much as she could. Cleaning the living room, and throwing every blanket that she could find, into the washing machine alongside your sweaty clothes left on the bathroom floor.

It terrified her to find you like this.

Once you were back on your feet, the two of you were going to have a serious talk about self-care. It was hard to grasp for her though – you had been just fine living on your own, so what happened?

Leah helped the young midfielder realize that it was not her fault that you had ended up like this – she had shown up at your shared apartment after Steph called her that you were sick.

With most of your teammates gone, you just missed them a lot.

You had gotten lonely, and if possible, Kyra would do anything to prevent this from happening again. Even if she would need to drag you to Australia.

Rifda Irfanaluthfi is a pioneering gymnast from Indonesia and has a very strong chance of being the first Indonesian woman to qualify for the Olympics.

She beat former US national team gymnast Aleah Finnigan at the Southeast Asian Games taking the AA title. The reason I have been thinking about her this morning is that if you try to google the results of that competition it requires quite a lot of refinement to find anything about Irfanaluthfi while there is plenty of results with Finnigan's name in the headlines.

And today as I sat down to watch the 2023 Asian Championships and everyone was excited about the Philippines team that was stacked with 2 former US national team members (including Finnigan) and a top level L10 who had been recruited from the United States I started to gently point out that Irfanaluthfi was someone to watch. I was told that sure she beat Finnigan at the SEA games but this was a different year and that the reason people talked about Finnigan and not Irfanaluthfi was "charisma".

Well Irfanaluthfi finished the day as the top non-Chinese/non-Korean scorer in the Asian championships. One spot ahead of Finnigan but by the comparatively wide margin of .9.

Maybe the gymternet will stop treating her like an after thought or someone who only won the SEA Games AA because Finnigan lost it. I am certainly in no hope that the fandom will realize that no NCAA gymnastics is not "world class"--and in particular when talking about NCAA transitioning into elite you should ask questions about bars which are the most different between international and college gymnastics.

But for now... can appreciate this young woman.
