I’m home from Resonance and have been lazing around all day recovering from our 4 day mural marathon. What an amazing experience!! I’ve never done a large scale collaboration like this before and I’m so thankful that I had @sweet_melis to show me the ropes. She has been such an incredible mentor to me over the last few years and has basically taught me everything I know about art. // Margaret Curtis, "The Falconer” (2020) “The Falconer” is a recent work by @margarcur and one of my favorites. Beyond having an affinity for avian-themed artwork, I am drawn to this piece due to its visual and conceptual complexity as well as its technical virtuosity. Margaret is another Asheville-area artist. The sentiments that I expressed in my previous @julyandavis post regarding community also apply here. I selected this piece to highlight another aspect of the COVID-era art world. Margaret’s work has a variety of attributes that do not effectively translate through a screen. Her brushwork is bold. Her innovative impasto and the manner in which she scrapes away layers to render pattern and texture is best appreciated in person. Obviously, getting out to a gallery or museum these days presents some challenges. Even attending packed openings was never really the best way in which to truly appreciate and contemplate artwork. There are interesting and varied differences between viewing artwork on a screen and viewing artwork as a physical object. Of course, this delineation easily predates our current pandemic circumstances. Like everything else these days, it is now just more pronounced.
