I love the atmosphere of the Metroid games and a huge part of that is the music and sound design. The first game has one of my favorite NES soundtracks, and establishes the franchise’s musical identity as sounding very “alien”; there’s a lot of chromatic notes, compound meters, and eerie silences.
The Game Boy sequel is much weirder, with frequently changing time signatures, no apparent keys, and intentionally discordant intervals. The Metroid battle theme cuts off the phrase halfway through at seemingly random, so it makes it seem like game glitched and skipped 2 beats, but the fights demand so much attention you can’t figure out the pattern to it. The Chozo Ruins theme alone drove me nuts, because despite not being catchy at all it became stuck in my head, especially with that echo across 3 octaves.
Super Metroid’s soundtrack is perhaps the highlight of the entire series. Samus Aran’s theme, which would appear across many titles, is so darkly triumphant, a perfect motif. The ambience of many of the “safe” rooms sounds like nothing you would ever hear on earth. Ridley’s theme is in 5|4, with the mission impossible style “2 long beats, 2 fast beats” that makes it seem like the track is speeding up halfway through each measure then laying off the gas again, which makes for a frantic fight. The “item obtained” jingle is as memorable as Zelda’s, but darker.
Metroid Dread, the most recent Metroid game, has some great themes as well, like Ferenia’s theme, where the bass and left hand piano eventually become deliciously out of sync, and it carries the tradition of ominous ambience and tense battle music, but I truly think the prime trilogy nailed the sound design in particular. Everything - from your footsteps, to the creature noises, to the charging of your power beam, to the scanning noise or static, sounds exactly the way it should. And the music itself is so damn good. Honestly, I think Magmoor Caverns is perfection. It’s a revamp of Norfair from Super Metroid, using the Phrygian scale (yum!), dramatic chanting, and it just keeps building up, and up…
Man, I love Metroid’s soundtrack.

Ik but i can't bear to kill him off
(i say this as if ash.rom, proto and static don't exist)
Technically changing them into a different creature isnt killing them off since your keeping them around somehow lol

The most interesting Metroid fact I learned tonight however is that Nintendo very much had a “eh, it’s just Metroid, if retro studio fucks this up no big deal” but were shocked when trailers were unveiled and people were hyped as fuck for Metroid prime. And they immediately decided to take advantage of that, realizing fans wanted more, and immediately got to work developing Metroid Fusion, which they’d release on the same day as Metroid Prime. I always assumed Fusion would have happened either way, I mean it is the one that’s made 100% by Nintendo, but no, its entire existence is tied to Prime.

Metroid lore is a mess but discussing Metroid prime is an absolute clusterfuck because the earlier North American release and the later releases in other regions/remasters have significantly different lore. This was because they thought they tried to fill a rather conspicuous plot hole, and in the process made a dozen other, smaller plot holes. The real problem, though, is there are fans who aren’t aware of any of this - they assume the version they played has always been the only version of events, and suddenly you have people accusing each other of gaslighting them on their favorite game, and mixing both narratives so it feels like theres twice as many plot holes and half as much sense.
People are still having heated debates on whether or not Metroid Prime is even a Metroid!

The English logos for Paper Mario, Metroid Prime, Metroid Fusion, and Animal Crossing were all designed by Dan Wornell, a former Nintendo of America employee. He claims that the Metroid Prime logo was a huge headache, as it took over 50 revisions for it to be approved, but was successful enough it was used for the Japanese releases too. He also created the manual for OoT, and perhaps most impressively, wrote the “Do a barrel roll!” Line from Star Fox 64. Thanks, Dan!

Ayami Kojima’s art is perfect for Castlevania and is what I will always associate with the series, but it’s undeniable that Tom Dubois’ art for the 8 and 16 bit titles still goes hard as fuck. Look at the colors and backgrounds!

They even got him to return to do covers for the Limited Run Castlevania collections!

I’m not looking forward to a live action Zelda movie for many reasons but I’m particularly afraid they’re going to take the beautiful life-changing soundtrack and turn it into another over-engineered soulless marvel soundtrack clone just with the motifs from my childhood over it I so very desperately need the genre of generic heroic action soundtracks to die they all sound exactly the same and so predictable and there’s no tension. They’re going to take all the fun and sexy time signatures and jazzy chords and diverse instruments and they’re going to make it peaking brassy shit ! Kill me!

Never played Other M and god willing I never will but learning that samus retains all (or most) of her upgrades from super Metroid but just “isn’t authorized” by Adam to use them until specific points in the plot is making me see red. That is such a stupid excuse, not only does it take away the sense of pride and progression in finding a new upgrade and seeing the possibilities open up before you, but you really expect me to believe samus would LISTEN to that bullshit? Samus “blew up how many planets and disregarded how many orders” Aran?

In the distant future episode of Live a Live, the other crewmates names are likely references to famous names in science fiction. Their last names are Wells (referring to H. G. Wells, author of The Time Machine and the Invisible Man, among others), Klein (referring to Gérard Klein, popular French author whose had his books translated into many languages), Bishop (referring to Michael Bishop, a prolific award-winning author), and Trumbull (referring to Douglas Trumbull, responsible for the visual effects in influential movies such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, Blade Runner, and others)

Everyone, I’m here to inform you that they have officially ran Doom on E. Coli bacteria. Unfortunately, the frame rate is a rather dismal .00003086419 fps, so you’ll need 600 years to finish it, but it’s still probably more optimized than cyberpunk was at launch.

I didn’t think it would actually happen
But the Paper Mario: TTYD remake is looking to be much more faithful to the original Japanese writing, with Hooktail’s weakness being frogs instead of crickets, and the dialogue with the Shadow Sisters has them saying something that… well….
Guys, I think we might ACTUALLY be getting TRANS VIVIAN!

I have such conflicted feelings about Metroid II because it’s both a great game and aggravating as hell. However, I’m so nervous the 3ds remake is going to ‘fix’ the things I loved about the game… I’ve seen some vids on it snd they had me 😒
Like I’m sure it’s a great game but adding Ridley into the escape sequence? Changing the atmosphere dramatically and making it more typical Metroid environments… idk guys I’m a bit sad about it I’ll have to just pretend it’s a totally different installment

I recently learned that guitar hero’s engine only allows you to create songs with 4 as the bottom number in the time signature. But, you might be thinking, guitar hero has songs from Tool and Fall of Troy and Soundgarden! There’s no way those songs are entirely in 4! You’re correct. How did they get around this? By abruptly accelerating and slowing the BPM to roughly mimic the actual song. The most horrifying example? The 21/32 bar in master of puppets is charted as 5|4 at nearly double BPM to get as close to it as possible.

I love that Live A Live’s distant future episode uses the hint loading screens in a fun way. After OD-10 is revealed as the main antagonist, all the hint text is replaced with its default response to any tampering, “it would be in your best interests to stop. This ship is my domain and I its master.” I love when games do shit like that.
