(1/2) Our design team researches historical frames on a regular basis, with special attention given to designs created by artists. Here, a profile named after the Expressionist painter and caricaturist Lyonel Feininger (1871 – 1956). Feininger designed many frames for his paintings in the first half of the 20th century, which Bark then studied, reproduced, and sometimes modified or used as inspiration for new designs. (1/2) Customization, illustrated: Our team of artisans can create finishes that work in dialogue with your art. Here, an ink and watercolor on paper by Gertrude Espenscheid we recently framed for a collector in Brooklyn. The client worked with designer Christine Heindl to select a frame design, matting, and glazing for the work. Together, the two chose a custom paint casein finish for the frame. Bark craftsman Victor Liz applied the finish by hand. Variations on our Regent frame profile. We designed this profile for 19th century photographs in the collection of the @metmuseum. In designing it, we were influenced by unusual Dutch frames of the 17th century, whose sides curved out as this one does. Regent could be called a variant on the cushion frame—very distinct from mouldings that are derived from architecture, as so many are. The corner samples shown here also illustrate various finishes we can do, from cladding, to gilding, to stains. (2/2) Some detail photos. The framing materials surrounding the art are all 100% archival. The work is hinged using pendant hinges made from Japanese paper, and rice starch paste, which we make ourselves. Four-ply shims were also installed, between the matted work and the glazing. The watercolor is matted in a 12-ply Rising Warm White mat, custom cut by our mat-makers.
