My car is sporting Stony… And no joke, I named my car TonySteve. Well it’s orignal name was just Tony, which is also coincidentally the name of my uncle that sold me the car (see what I did there?). But being an older car, the cold weather initially affected it and it had problems starting, which is why I tacked on the name Steve.

Sticker designed by a Stony artist I met at the long beach comic convention a few months back. I wish I could remember her name.

I’m on my las year of graphic design and now we are taking illustration and i’m wondering if you can recommend me some good graphic tablets, because i saw there is wacom, cintiq, intuos and more. If you could help me I’d be very grateful but you don’t have to I’ll still love your work and illustrations. Much love x

Hi Adara, thanks so much!

I would highly recommend borrowing a tablet from school (if available) first to see how you like digital art. It might be a good idea to practice before investing in a tablet. There are tablets in different price ranges, but there’s no point in spending money if it’s not something you would find useful in the future. 

That being said, as far as the best tablets go, everyone has their own preferences. I’ve used Wacom for my whole career (Intuos and Cintiq are part of the Wacom family, just different models of tablets Wacom offers). I’ve found Wacom to be very sturdy and virtually indestructable. My first Wacom (it was a Graphire 3, no longer sold as far as I know) worked fine for over 10 years, and even if I am to plug it in now, it would still be in perfect working condition. 

I’ve used the Wacom Intuos 4 before as well, and that was a terrific tablet. Very sensitive and responsive, and a model you can now buy used for a fairly low price, but I don’t believe Wacom produces them anymore either. I’m currently using an Intuos Pro right now, and there is noticeable difference between the Intuos 4 and Pro, the Pro having yet even more sensitivity and a smoother, more streamlined feeling to its functions (especially when drawing one long continuous line), and less lag when dealing with larger files. 

I don’t actually know very much about other brands of tablets, as I’ve only used Wacom and recently added an iPad Pro to my toolset. Unless you’re a professional illustrator or animator, a Wacom Cintiq is very expensive for what you need, especially if you’ve never used a tablet before. If you want to simply practice with a tablet to try it out and learn to draw digitally, I would suggest getting a cheaper Wacom (such as the Wacom Bamboo) and later graduating to their more advanced models. Most Wacom tablets are stellar and have amazing control, so none of the models would really be remiss. It just depends on what you want to use them for, and your budget. 

As for the iPad Pro, I think that would be good too if you’re just trying out digital painting and playing around with the apps, but only if you have other uses for the iPad because it’s over $1000USD and you have to buy the Pencil separately, and there’s aren’t a lot of options for good drawing apps yet. I’ve also noticed that the iPad Pro lags a little and it’s not as sensitive as a Wacom by far (or maybe I’m not using it right - very possible). Apple still has some ways to go, in my opinion, but a lot of industry professionals use iPad Pro because of its portability and convenience, so there’s that option.
