whats your fav paintings of the romonov family?
Hi!!! I love this question! I’m just going to feature actual paintings from the past because, when it comes to fanarts, I don’t want to take other peoples art without their permission and that is a whole separate post entirely lol bc there are so many good artists out there! 💕
Also, WARNING! I don’t know who the artist is on most of these paintings since they are are just saved in my camera role 🥲, I will put who is in each painting and when it is supposed to be taken in. Sorry for the misunderstanding!

The last Romanovs and the painter Friedrich August von Kaulbach
The beautiful paintings of Empress Alexandra Feodorovna and Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna were completed by the German painter Friedrich August von Kaulbach. He painted the two Hessian sisters more than once. I have only included the paintings when I was sure of the authorship; there are others. The painter had plenty of access to his imperial clients.
There are also several sketches of the imperial children (including Grand Duke Ernie's daughter Elizabeth) by the same artist at the Alexander Palace. I have seen them in pictures of one of the rooms there; If I can get a copy, I will publish it here. Some of those sketches are in black and white and seem to be "studies" for paintings von Kaulbach was working on (notice the black and white sketch of Alexandra's head above.) There is a black-and-white sketch of Nicholas II as well. There may be a portrait of him by von Kaulbach somewhere.
We (meaning a few of us in the forum, independently and together) initially found a black-and-white sketch of Nicholas, already published in several blogs here, which appears to be one of pair with the sketch of Alexandra above.
My impression is that the little girl above is Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna. She is identified both as Olga and Anastasia on different web pages. At most sites, this sketch is called "Victorian Little Girl" and "Portrait of a Little Girl," and it seems that it was sold at auction as "Portrait of a Girl" (I am not sure of the accuracy of that information.) There is a tiny version of it which is/was sold as decoration for doll houses. Which Grand Duchess do you think this little girl is?
A little bit on the painter: He came from a long family of painters and was considered a "painter prince" because he was one of the highest-paid painters in Germany. He painted portraits, mostly commissioned by elite aristocrats. He also did historical work.
I have included a painting of Grand Duchess Iosifovna by von Kaulbach, and a sketch of Keiser Wilhelm II attributed to him. He also painted Sissy. I will post that picture separately for those who may be interested.

Friedrich August von Kaulbach (b.1850 - d.1920), 'Portrait of the Artist's Daughter', oil on panel, no date (est. 1900), German, sold for 2,500 CHF
in Koller Auction’s 19th Century Paintings Sale, September 2019; Zurich, Switzerland.
The sitter is either his daughter Hedda or Mathilde, both of whom would go on to marry artists; Hedda marrying Toni Stadler, and Mathilde marrying Max Beckmann.
Another portrait of Hedda - whose similarity to the sitter above is apparent - dated 1907 was sold at Dorotheum in 2018.
