worst way to start my new year, thanks. i have a lot of things to say about these companies but i'm tired and just keeping it focused to the pin side of things for this one. do not ever buy pins from these companies, literally ALL of them are stolen from small artists like me. if you want to buy enamel pins, check out etsy, and artist's personal websites and shops! (though even Etsy has some bootleg pins that ship straight from china, so tread carefully…)
Every pin I've designed is, thus far, EXCLUSIVE to my etsy. if you find it anywhere else, it's been ripped off! and once these stupid bootlegs pop up, it's basically a never ending game of whack-a-mole trying to get them all taken down...

Art theft has always been bad, but I feel like the way tiktok promotes remixing other people’s content into “your own” has ESPECIALLY proliferated the idea that, if something is on the internet, it’s anyone’s to take.
like. My friend just found these comments on a tiktok someone made of their comic:
Tumblr media
This is why I don’t allow reposts. Because even if I give one person permission, even if they credit me and do everything I ask, you never know who is going to steal it from them.
So here’s your reminder:
If you see fanart or a fancomic you like, you ABSOLUTELY MAY NOT share it without checking if it’s ok first.
IF YOU RUN A FAN ACCOUNT. I’M LOOKING AT YOU. YOU’RE NOT HELPING ‘EXPOSE’ ARTISTS BY POSTING STOLEN ART YOU’RE JUST BEING SELFISH AND DISRESPECTFUL. @‘ING ME ON INSTAGRAM ISN’T GOING TO FIX THE FACT THAT YOU DIDN’T ASK PERMISSION
THIS GOES FOR TRANSLATIONS. I UNDERSTAND WANTING TO MAKE A COMIC MORE ACCESSIBLE TO YOUR LANGUAGE, BUT IT’S STILL A CONCERN THAT IT WILL GET STOLEN FROM YOU (and I KNOW some people don’t ACTUALLY care about it being more accessible, because I’ve asked people to reblog my original post with a translated transcription and they threw a fit because they obviously just wanted the views for their own page)
Comic dubbers are also not exempt from needing to ask for permission. I know there’s a lot of editing and you are technically producing new content, but jfc you still need to ASK TO USE SOMEONE’S ART. ESPECIALLY IF YOU’RE MONETIZING YOUR PAGE.
I also DO NOT CARE if your pinterest page is “just for your personal reference” STOP UPLOADING ARTWORK AS ORIGINAL POSTS. IF YOU MUST PIN ART, JUST POST THE LINK!!!! I die a little inside every time someone says they saw one of my comics on pinterest and had a hard time finding my actual post.
Why is it important that artists stay credited? Well, I for one, am about to start my junior year of my BFA, and I won’t be able to work my part-time job anymore. My art is going to be only source of income. Every time someone reposts my art without credit, that’s more people that won’t find the link to my store. That’s potential job recruiters that won’t find my portfolio. That’s work that I’ve done that someone else is getting activity for, potentially even making money off of.
Please, PLEASE be aware of art theft. Point it out when you see it. Please understand most artists see it as offensive and disrespectful and are not flattered by it.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wanted to take some time sharing my awful experience this this person in particular. The original post has an error that does not let me repost, like or even see the original poster’s account, that’s why I have screenshots.
So I never thought I’d be reminded of this asshole this year yet here I am. My work has also been used and uncredited by this guy last year. I commented on the first video where my art was used and uncredited asking to please not use my and others work unless it is credited or asked with permission. He replied with “my g”…..(istg).
Tumblr media
So a month later he used the same work again with no credit nor permission. I commented asking if he was seriously using my work again without permission. The video that my work was in was filled to the brim with nsfw art and comics. It was gross and uncomfortable to see my comic being compared to that. My comic was just for laughs and for my Sonadow followers. And this jerk had to make it weird and extremely sexual. He replied trying to act innocent and saying that my work wasn’t in the video. He completely lied to me even though my work was right in front of me in the video. I even received a death threat from another commenter saying they have an organization that will k*ll me and take all my belongings cause they “don’t care.” How sweet-
Tumblr media
After that, I stopped wasting my time with him and just continued on with my life. And of course he came back and made AN ENTIRE VIDEO about how my art “sucks ass” and that it’s stupid to give artists credit and ask permission. He uses the “copyright law” excuse to continue using art in his videos. He struggles throughout the video to give excuses and make points as to why it’s “stupid.” Honestly, the whole video is childish since most of the time he’s just swearing and saying f you to anyone that disagrees with him. He even says “Corffee? More like Crappy.” Oh I’m shaking in my boots right now.
Tumblr media
Anyway, I hope people are informed enough about this child and help support artists who are affected by art theft and people like him. Peace.

⚠️ REPLICA WARNING ⚠️
Just a heads up to our overseas readers that Shein just put up a huge amount of replicas from japanese indie brands producing girly fashion. For years now, local brands have been struggling to make ends meet and closed many of their stores (ex: Ank Rouge). Of course, there are many people who can't afford brand releases as they come out, as brand names are typically expensive, but there are other options, such as buying secondhand or supporting smaller creators.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The low prices make it easy to forget that corporations like Shein are a major contributor to low wages and by buying from them you help increasing the demand for underpaid workers, hurting people just like you. Also, due to the poor quality that does not last, you will have to keep buying new clothes over and over again, which not only does hurt your wallet in the long run but also the enviroment, better save up a little for a quality piece than wasting it. There's also the concern that it has been proven that their products contain various toxic substances, such as high concentrations of lead and softeners. Mass-producing clothing in this dangerous and unsustainable manner directly affects worldwide wages, and is responsible for local businesses and creators closing their stores. Please do not support Shein and other companies similar to it that mass-produce low-quality knockoffs, as it is harmful to you, the environment, and puts money directly into the pockets of those who wish to exploit underpaid workers and artists.
It seems like most are being posted as ROMWE, and Honey Cinnamon, Liz Lisa, and MA*RS have had the most of their designs taken, but they're not the only girly brand replicas SHEIN is making. Please be careful and look out for replicas!

Adrienn Banai: The Rat Lover
I didn't want to post about any of this, but this person forced my hand.
I can't let this person run around on this hellsite anymore.
For those not in the know, this person harasses artists into drawing their husbando: a rat character named "Grey" from the children's series "Larva Island". Sometimes they also harass people into drawing Grey's grandpa, a female version of Grey named "Greyless", Grey wearing Roxanne's dress from "A Goofy Movie", and plenty of parodies of the opening scene of said movie. Like, they subjected one person to draw that same sequence with different characters like 6-7 times. And the "best" part? Sometimes they steal the poor victim's art to claim it as their own. And sometimes, they create edits of them WITHOUT CREDITING THE ORIGINAL ARTISTS. And when they do get caught, they apologize. A lot. But that's only a front to get respect again.
Tumblr media
Her husbando
And I was one of their unfortunate victims. This person is weird as all hell; they ship this rat with Pibby (a character that is canonically from a preschool show), Meilin Lee (A hecking 13 year old girl), and Adrienn themselves.
The rat, according to the user, is 15 while the female version of the rest, his girlfriend, is 12.
Adrienn themselves are either 17 or 19.
The fandoms they follow are: -Courage the Cowardly Dog -Friday Night Funkin -Learning with Pibby -Little Nightmares -Turning Red -Anything Disney related (Goofy mostly) -Steven Universe -Made in Abyss -Road to El Dorado -Eddsworld -Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles -Super Mario series and, most importantly, Larva.
Tumblr media
She stole my artwork just to make crappy edits
Tumblr media
adrienn, flat out admitting that they steal art from people
It's already kind of weird enough, but then I did more digging on this person. They have a butt ton of accounts on a multitude of social media websites. They have a few on reddit, a few on wikia, one on vimeo, and a few on behance, of all places. They have a long history of harassing users, especially on reddit and wikia. They have the most accounts on Tumblr, with five (two of them are inactive.) The second biggest is wikia, with four. The earliest accounts were on DeviantArt, which makes a lot of sense. Oh, but it gets better. They have uncensored nsfw content on two tumblrs. This is from one of their accounts. I am not going to show you the image, but I'm going to show you the tags:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I mean, I'm glad that they tagged it as "rule 34", but I'm more surprised about how tumblr didn't purge those posts or ban the user entirely. So, if you see someone with any of these accounts ask you to draw this rat, dump the ask and block em. Hell, even report them if you need to : https://adrienn-banai-09.tumblr.com/ (WARNING, NSFW CONTENT AHEAD) https://adriennbanai09.tumblr.com/ (Not as nsfw as the one above, but still, nsfw) https://andreabanai.tumblr.com/ https://adriennsposts.tumblr.com/ (currently active) https://adriennbanai-09.tumblr.com/ (currently inactive) https://adriennbanai-2022.tumblr.com They may also go by "zoltanbanai", so keep your eyes out.
And Adrienn/Andrea, if you are reading this, I urge you to take a break from the internet and get some help. As I said multiple times, this behavior will not help you make friends. It will only make more enemies. I am an autistic just like you (probably. idk) and I really don't want to put you down like this, but you're already weirding a bunch of people out. Though you probably won't listen to me anyway, since apparently in your eyes the word "no" is just an unspoken "yes".
And please don't harass this person or send them death threats. Doing that just makes you a bad person.
I hope this is the last time I talk about this person, because I don't really have the time or the patience to deal with stupid bullcrap like this.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk. The clorox brain bleach is on the right side of the exits.

Art Theft PSA
Do not use the website artwisher.com It has stolen various works from different artists to sell as prints. The search function on the site is currently broken and trying to report a copyright violation on the site will send you to a phishing form. It is supposedly based out of the Bahamas, but has China shipping. The whole thing is a scam. Unfortunately, some of my art was found there, along with other artists work. We won't see a cent from it. Please avoid this site. Sharing this warning is all I can do.

I feel like there’s a big thing people people calling for the end of art theft in A.I. art generation are missing.
Suppose you get your wish. Suppose a class action lawsuit gets your desired result, and it is determined that the use of an artist’s work in training data without their permission constitutes a violation of copyright. Suppose that in spite of the lobbying of big tech companies like Google and Microsoft, the result sticks long term. Suppose that most countries pass laws or have similar lawsuits along these lines.
This is still only going to be a small victory. It is not going to kill A.I. art generation dead.
Sure, the current batch of software will have to pivot or rethink how they’re doing things. A lot of them might be pushed underground, or only be able to operate in the countries with the laxest laws.
But Pandora’s box has been opened.
Artists getting credit and getting paid for their art is not going to stop the future where companies want to use this promising new technology to not have to pay more artists. It’s just going to stop that technology from being in the hands of the little guy, like it is now. The only individuals who could afford all the royalties are going to be big tech companies.
Some behemoth like Google is going to commission a bunch of artists, and buy up a bunch of licenses, and dip into their extensive archive of public domain images, and they’re going to make a new Dall-E or Stable Diffusion or Midjourney, and it will all be legal and above board.
If you’re an artist, and your only discomfort with A.I. art is the lack of permission given, then maybe this will be a utopian outcome for you. Yay! Google might make a one time payment to a bunch of starving artists.
But if your concern is with the possibility of this technology to displace working artists, then this is probably the worst of all possible worlds. Not only will your job still be going away, but now instead of the trade off being that A.I.-generated art is now in the hands of the people, thanks to open-source projects like Stable Diffusion, you will have a world where only giant tech companies can afford to do A.I. art generation.
You’re screwed either way, but I would argue you’re more screwed in a world where the technology becomes centralized and only in the hands of a small group of tech monopolies.
I think people who feel threatened by this new technology, and who are throwing any half-baked argument against it at a wall to see what sticks should try and think about whether they’ll actually like the world they end up in if they “get their way” in the battle over creator permission and credit, but lose the overall war for the future of working artists.

Just want to make my stance clear: I am anti-AI because these programs are being fed with author's or artist's works without the creator's consent. This is theft, because the writing/art is being used for a purpose not intended. Art and writing are shared, for free usually, with the intent for someone to read/see it and enjoy it. NOT feed it into an algorithm to make a product for someone else. It's unwritten social contract, sure, but that doesn't give anyone the right to use someone else's product like they own it.
This is especially true for art AIs, as there are often options to literally copy certain artist's styles. It's like you made stickers to sell using someone else's fanart. Sure, you made the sticker, but unless you bought the rights (or asked permission) for that artist's work to be used in that manner, it is theft. Or maybe you traced their images to sell your own versions of it. Technically you made the art, but it was only possible as a derivative of someone else's effort. And I can guarantee you that VERY few creators would be happy if someone traced their art and then touted it as being the property and efforts of the tracer.
This is also plagiarism in a sense, especially for writing AIs, as "content" that was made by someone else is being sourced into these things and spat out the other end without any proper accreditation, even if altered. Any monkey's uncle who has done a modicum of higher level science knows just how massive an issue proper accreditation is when writing academic papers. All information, except for common knowledge, MUST be given a source. If you read a paper saying that, for instance, the metabolism of a certain animal is increased by (x) factor for (y) reason, you cannot simply state this fact in your own paper. YOU MUST CREDIT THE SOURCE OF THIS INFORMATION. It is a legal issue if you do not.
The people who make these AIs do not make their own art to feed to these programs. They do not write their own books and stories to teach to these things. How could they? You need thousands to train such a program. So they take it from somewhere else. The program cannot be held accountable for what it does, as it is only doing what it is trained to do. But the people using them seem to think nothing of HOW these things were trained. And very often, the machines are used to replace trained writers or artists. Why pay someone to make something for you, who can only do so because of YEARS of experience, when you can use an AI at a fraction of the cost? An AI that was unethically trained on that artist's work, without their consent, to create an image similar to the artist's abilities? Can you not see the issue here!?
Therefore simply using them is extremely unethical in my eyes. To say that using AIs isn't outright plagiarism or theft is a brand of obtuse ignorance I cannot stand. That sort of entitlement, to use someone else's efforts and "products" to further your own ends, is utterly immoral. I will NOT be swayed from this stance either.

say no to ai art theft
as a reminder, even if you opt out of third party (ai) data sharing, that only (supposedly) protects you from tumblr's partners. there's nothing stopping random other ai makers from scraping art off of free-to-view sites like tumblr, and there never has been.
so please, even if you've checked that box, use glaze and nightshade to protect yourself and others by poisoning the ai datasets that steal your work.
https://nightshade.cs.uchicago.edu/whatis.html
EDIT- if you lack a pc that can handle glaze/nightshade, try these alternatives;

This has been said a billion times on this damn webbed site and I can’t believe I have to say it again.
Serious reminder that just because someone says “original artist is ‘so-and-so’ from Twitter” underneath art, does NOT mean they got permission from the artist. In many cases the original artists are non-English speaking and may not know that their art is being reposted on tumblr. I know this has been said many times, but it bears repeating that just because the artist is “named” in the post does NOT mean it’s okay to share this art. Please do not reblog reposted art

So Tumblr decided to make opting out of "AI" training extremely unobvious, even if you're paying for it
While I do get the "if you're not paying for it, you're the product" end of things, I am paying for Tumblr. So it is very disappointing that, even as a subscriber, I only learned about the ability to opt out because of networks I have elsewhere.
@staff FYI: I am reconsidering re-upping my subscription when it ends.
Anyway, for everyone, here's how you opt out. You have to go to your blog-specific settings:
Tumblr media
Under Visibility, you have to toggle on "Prevent third-party sharing." And you can only do this on desktop, unless they've pushed a mobile update within the past few days 🫠
Very, very disappointed at how oblique Tumblr chose to make this. And glad that I've been watermarking my higher-quality shots all along, even if it's made them harder to enjoy.

⚠️ ATTENTION PLS ⚠️
pls report and block @lotsssuhtummedyumms
but do not engage directly
he is a pedophile, zoophile, doxxer, and racist who assumed i’m a minor and began harassing me
he’s apparently had the cops called on him before and his internet forcibly cancelled but of course he still walks free…
he targets dragons hence the dragon fandom related tags but his harassment towards me was on a drawing of my persona so it seems he’s branching out.
he has been targeting fandoms that have lots of minors as well.
links below the cut and cw for all i mentioned being in those links
i was confused by their word salads but felt uncomfortable regardless and rightfully so

here is in more detail what he has done
here is a psa by the artist he stole the pfp he is using from and another post
again DO NOT engage with him and DO NOT file dmca or anything because he will use the claim to dox you

I'm going to pull all my art from this site untill further notice, in light of the whole AI shitshow. I made a backup of my blog and applied for WebGlaze (the same Glaze data-poisoning tool, but web-based) so I can repost the glazed versions whenever I am able to. I recommend you look into using Glaze and Nightshade to protect your works and poison the AI databases
https://glaze.cs.uchicago.edu/ <- Glaze
https://glaze.cs.uchicago.edu/webinvite.html <- instructions to apply for WebGlaze invite, if you can't or don't want to download and run the program
https://nightshade.cs.uchicago.edu/index.html <- Nightshade
Also, I think we should collectively reach out to the people responsible for selling our images to AI companies and tell them what we think of this. You can (and should) reblog this post and add more resources, if possible, I would be happy if you do.

PSA regarding character design asks
For those of you who are new here, if you take a look at the "character design" tag in this blog's archive, you'll notice I post a fair bit about the subject, sometimes helping others improve their own designs. I love getting these kinds of asks, as working out design kinks is a fun challenge for me (despite urgent life shit delaying my response times. Folks who've sent me design asks in the past few months: They're in my drafts and I thank you for your patience).
But recently I received an ask that displayed some rather disappointing behavior, and I thought I'd take this opportunity to nip it in the bud. This isn't a callout post, and I'm not trying to sic the shame squad on this person. I just want to stress to all of you that this isn't okay.
The ask included an image of a character they drew and some brief paragraphs of background information. Typical fare for this kind of ask. Everything was fine until the last two sentences.
I have to confess that I shamelessly stole the [clothing article] from [someone else's character design]. But since [worldbuilding info related to a real-life thing the other person's design was based on], it made perfect sense.
I looked up the original design they were referring to, and sure enough, they had traced so much of it that half of their design wasn't really theirs. Because it "made perfect sense."
I'm going to say this in the most civil way I possibly can.
ANYTHING. Would have made more sense. Than art theft.
"But Maue, it's just part of a design, not the whole thing". Doesn't matter. Theft is theft. And I want to make it clear to everyone reading this that if you think it's in any way acceptable to rip off another character designer, my posts haven't taught you a damn thing. Frankly I'm a bit insulted that this person assumed I'd be complicit in this.
For the record, professional designers do NOT steal from others, or at least the good ones don't. They might be inspired by an existing design, but, importantly, they'll use other inspirations too, and put their own unique spin on it. It's just a starting point, not the final product.
They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but this ain't just imitation; it's the equivalent of copying another kid's homework in school. This is cheating. I've had one of my own characters shamelessly ripped off before, and there was nothing flattering about it. It just made me feel used, like a parasite had sucked me dry. I never want anyone else to feel that way, and I hope to God none of y'all do either.
Folks, if you want to design your own characters, do the research and actually design your own characters. It's really not that hard. Sure, the first attempts might look terrible, but at least they'll come by their shittiness honestly. Ugly art that tried has infinitely more charm than gorgeous art that didn't.
I'm sorry if this comes off as harsh, but I take this shit seriously. So please don't send me asks containing stolen artwork. I won't respond and you'll earn yourself a block. Fair warning.
Don't get lazy. You know better, so do better.
Thanks.
