The trio Amiira of Klaus Gesing, Björn Meyer and Samuel Rohrer has returned after a layoff of six years since their debut LP. It would be unwise to expect for them to pick up exactly where they left off, given all the turbulent change that the world has encountered since this time, and indeed the new Album Curious Objects reflects a clear expansion of the players’ abilities. The fundamentals that guided the debut album – spatiality, refined coolness, the non-verbal “narrative” quality - are still very much present, but are this time reinforced with an even more pronounced feeling of communicating across wide physical and conceptual spaces. Altogether, Curious Objects is a potent antidote for spiritual and musical fatigue; especially recommended for those who have already left behind the limitations posed by genres. It is more than the sum of its parts, and its crossing of numerous different boundaries never feels like the goal in and of itself: instead, all this activity feels like a tool for unlocking and decoding even more supposedly irreconcilable qualities and ideas. Samuel Rohrer - Codes of Nature - he certainly deserves recognition in his own right instead of my usual “RIYL Burnt Friedman’; that said, there’s a track here that shares a title with a Friedman piece (”The Banality of Evil”, as Nine Horses with David Sylvian)

Samuel Rohrer Drums, Modular Synths, Electronics, Keys, Cymbals, Percussion Samuel Rohrer’s newest solo album, Codes of Nature, shows the artist making yet more refinements and additions to an already rich catalog of musical ideas. Though he has excelled in collaborative projects with Ambiq, Ricardo Villalobos, Max Loderbauer, Tobias Freund, Oren Ambarchi and others, it is fascinating to experience him also working in a field completely his own, yet managing to still give the impression of being fully integrated or connected with a larger musical universe. A strange, intriguing ambiguity between the specific and the universal is indeed what makes Rohrer’s music worth playing on a loop – the cool, downtempo, yet energized constructions on Codes are powered by subtle atmospheric and tonal changes, and work like a camouflage adaptable to any environment.

Premiere: Samuel Rohrer - “War On Consciousness”

Inspiration is an unpredictable thing. For example, while Swiss producer/percussionist Samuel Rohrer was at work on his upcoming full-length, Range of Regularity, a friend forwarded him a “banned TEDx Talk” by author/‘fringe archeologist’ Graham Hancock. The video, centered on Hancock’s ayahuasca experiences, left a mark on Rohrer, who wrote to us via email that it fed into his ongoing rumination on “the current world situation and its tendencies.” He further elaborates: I assume it must be difficult to not become a political person these days… Even if there are only a few people who do not care about all the others, about the planet, our surroundings, these few people are too powerful and are most likely the ones who create most of the damage. And they have built an industry and system behind them, for their own sake, which supports and covers them, but which finally is not working. So we ended up in a place where material success, greed and competition is more important than life itself … I say we can come back to a conscious mind, we can reset our way of understanding what we are and what we are surrounded with. But we have to work for it. We have to really want that change. And probably we need to fall much deeper to finally give up what we think is so precious … The artist ultimately named one of his tracks — the 10-minute, groove-warping “War On Consciousness” — after the talk, and while it might have a slight sense of the post-new age/ancient alien energy one might associate with Hancock, Rohrer is onto something else here. As with the rest of the album, “War” is based on Rohrer’s own live, flesh-and-blood drum recordings, which he has painstakingly re-edited and assembled into a digital collage which, for all its headiness, feels deeply rooted in the rhythms of earth, and call out to his collaborations with such electronic explorers as Ricardo Villalobos and Laurie Anderson.
