Happy Birthday to ex Scottish Rugby Player Doddie Weir..

Born George Wilson Weir on this day 1970 in Edinburgh, Doddie was educated at Daniel Stewart’s and Melville College and given the school’s heritage with the sport, and Doddie’s size, it was only natural he would take up the rugby.

After his education finished he played for Stewart’s Melville FP, the FP stands for former pupil, he then went on to play for Melrose in the Scottish Borders, and was part of the team that won six Scottish club championships.

He later moved to England in 1995 to join the Newcastle Falcons, helping them win the Premiership in 1998.

Lock Weir was capped 61 times by Scotland, and was part of the victorious Lions tour to South Africa in 1997.

He moved back to Scotland to join the newly reformed Borders team in 2002 where he remained until his retirement from professional rugby. He finished his playing career together with Gary Armstrong at Borders Reivers in 2004.

In 2016 Doddie was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) in 2016 and made his diagnosis public the following summer. Although the average life expectancy is between one and three years, he has defied the odds to keep battling and his charity, the My Name'5 Doddie Foundation, has raised more than £4million for research into a cure. Doddie was also told that a year later he would not be able to walk, he is still walking to this day, a testament to the determination and fighting spirit of this remarkable man.

And while it put a stop to Doddie’s usually hectic schedule of appearances and dinners, the 61-times capped Scotland internationalist has enjoyed spending time at home with his family.

It’s allowed me to get out for a bit of fresh air, with friends and family, and we’ve got an outside gym that I use once or twice a week.“I still think I’m doing quite well – I’m still getting up and down the stairs unaided and enjoying a wee bit drink at night.”

Doddie explained “As a bloke you just think ‘I’m fine’, but with this that’s not quite the case. Basically it’s a muscle wasting disease and that’s how in the later life of MND it’s horrific because you need help everywhere.

"Basically your muscles in your legs disappear so you can’t walk; you can’t really eat, and then your muscles within your speech disappear so you can’t speak; you can’t swallow and can’t breath so it’s horrific what happens.

”….“But it’s such a debilitating condition and there’s nothing out there that can help any patient with MND.

He has signed a “Do not resuscitate” (DNR) over two years ago.

In February 2020 Doddie said his decision to refuse potentially lifesaving CPR came after a tough chat with his sons Hamish, 18, Angus, 17, and Ben, 15. "I’ve had to talk to them about DNR. We’ve just signed a document for that at the moment, which isn’t easy.”

He added: “You just have to be honest and open and they took it really well.”

The remarkable Doddie Weir continues to fight his affliction, more than 50 people joined him in the event last Tuesday to raise funds to support research into the causes of MND. The occasion was to celebrate Mr Weir’s annual My Name’5 Doddie Foundation (MNDF) Scotland Golf Day and earned the charity a five figure sum.

Buffalo Bills Have Quarterback Who Makes All the Difference, Unfortunately

An overtime loss on a punt return was a perfect ending in its way. Fuming about a rather egregious lapse for an alleged pro team is an afterthought in a sign of just how superbly the opener went, specifically not quite very. The most atrocious punt coverage in memory was merely the exclamation point. Now is the time for questioning every statement. Winning a coin toss after doinking in a tie meant the club can’t kvetch about not getting breaks. Instead, the Bills beat the Bills.

Josh Allen was the deciding factor. That’s supposed to be good news. Losing on his lonesome is the variable fans weren’t expecting if anyone enjoys surprises. Inflicting a handicap is one way to ensure parity. But making it fair isn’t in his job description. This isn’t golfing, although he may have done too much of that. The good news for him is that nobody’s going to care who he’s dating.

We wanted desperately for the Jets to use the Aaron Rodgers blink of a tenure as an excuse. Instead, the Bills couldn’t capitalize on how he wasn’t going to tackle or cover receivers no matter how long he played. The four-snap era led to the Jets needing the Bills to squander the most glorious of chances, and they naturally obliged.

The only way losing to Zach Wilson could get more mortifying is when he’s thrust into playing after presuming he was going to spend the evening swiping potential OkCupid matches on the sideline. Doing so should shame any respectable franchise into proficiency. A night off for MILFs turned into the same for the Bills. Even his cadence on “Green 18” sounds hollow.

Bills fans should be delighting in memories of Wilson’s prototypical interception that he would’ve thrown even on an alternate DC Comics Earth where Rodgers is a Titan and the new/old/new guy had the entire offseason to prepare like a starter. Taunting him should lead to a gain of 15 yards.

As for the quarterback he beat, the stubborn refusal to read coverages is the wrong style of defiance. An interception where it looked like there wasn’t another Bill in New Jersey was as bad as making Stefon Diggs play defense. Fumbling a snap by not looking at the ball was a nice touch if the throws into oblivion weren’t infuriating enough. We’re trying to combat a story about Allen’s ghastly decisions as he adds another chapter. That settles it: I’ll take the cash if I win West Herr's giveaway and not the truck.

Calling Allen a gunslinger shames qualified profession members. He’s shooting at the Sun. Aiming recklessly differs entirely from playing riskily. His decisions reflect someone who thinks he has to win games singlehandedly while losing them on its own. Irony is tough to appreciate while watching him make decisions bad enough to make Doug Whaley shake his head.

Wholly unnecessary gambles are not an aberration from last season but now part of his profile. He’s reached the point where it’s on him to change the perception, as he didn’t do so during the offseason. Number 17 hits on 19; if he gets an ace, he hits again.

Allen is presently a bad player. That sounds dramatic for an acceptable reason. A failing 62.6 rating is atrocious and still doesn’t encompass how he cannot be trusted. The one thing better than criticizing himself is not once again putting himself in position where he needs to do so. A new season offers an opportunity to start fresh, and he turned it down. Instead, he sounds like a drunkard promising to sober up before sneaking sips from a schnapps bottle.

This isn’t part of the Josh Allen experience. Trying to throw through small windows is distinct from seeking to throw through closed doors. He hasn’t always been careless with attempts. It wouldn’t be okay if he was, but this unfortunate habit has only become an issue since partway through last season. Maddening decisions are avoidable if you seek hope. The problem is the habit seems to have taken hold.

Recklessness is thorough. Worst of all, there’s no beneficial result in exchange for the tradeoff. Take his daft final play of the first half, which featured him jumping pointlessly for a few extra yards far from the line to gain and in the red zone, which he needs to be informed means the placekicker is already within range. We’d be more upset about one bad decision if it was the worst he made and not maybe in fifth place.

A few missed tackles almost seem like a quaint issue. Leslie Frazier was coordinating from home. We can’t blame him except for his legacy. Sean McDermott seemed distracted as feared. The same defensive lapses as usual would ideally be the most glaring issue.

Prison thinking leads to obsessing over outcomes that likely won’t happen. The only way to exacerbate endless hours for pondering is to let theoretical narratives take root. The offseason sentence led some fans to either conclude the Bills were destined to cruise or doomed to have missed their chance. An unanticipated scenario involving remedial quarterback play didn’t come to mind that entire time in a mental cell.

We still only know one game despite the urge to project results on the next 16. The Chiefs and Bengals aren’t surrendering because of their respective underwhelming losses.�� But the fixes aren’t headlights that turn on automatically when needed. Teams made to wait the longest to start get the shortest interval before going again, which is good news for one in particular that needs to prove their self-destruct sequence isn’t their most prominent play call.

The opener confirmed the narrative, or didn’t. That narrows it down to all the possibilities in the universe. Buffalo doesn’t necessarily have to be defined by a game that was frustrating even by historical franchise standards. But Tre White needs to start regaining his form. Spencer Brown has to learn how to play offensive lineman. And Buffalo’s most prominent resident must stop trying to do it all on his own, especially since he’s doing the opposite.

Everything feels different on September 11. Sports seem both unimportant and treasured if the schedule happens to coincide. A day for reflection leads to appreciation for things we enjoy. If you’re a Bills backer, it then leads to returning to everyday aggravations.

Games go on even if tenures end before taking seats. The Bills were struck by lightning about half a dozen times last year. The Jets learned from their rival’s precedent and didn’t use getting hit by a lava meteor as an excuse.

A Trent Edwards/Dick Jauron-worthy performance is the unwelcome kind of throwback. This season’ first outing ended as unnecessarily ignominiously as 2009’s horrid opener with the additional cruelty of having seen incumbents perform far better. The Jets cashed in on facing a quarterback who wouldn’t have performed differently if he were trying to lose.

The same franchise that’s broken your heart before dipping it in liquid nitrogen to shatter it hasn’t changed despite recent exceptions. That was only one game. But the Bills used their opening shot to demonstrate they’ve reinforced their worst tendencies.

Here we go again — LDS Church leaders have been so busy praying to save The Great Salt Lake and explaining their position on same-sex marriage that they may have forgotten to list some assets on tax documents. Oops. Now hold on Wilson, this isn't exactly straight out of the Donald Trump playbook. For one thing Ensign Peak Advisors, the church's investment arm, doesn't own any golf courses. David A. Nelson, who once managed funds for Ensign Peak, wants the Senate Finance Committee to investigate Ensign Peak for “systematic fraud” anf masquerading as a tax-exempt organization. Nelson alleges the church owes some $20 billion in back taxes. Well, this is another fine mess they've gotten into. The Wall Street Journal reports that the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is already barking up the church's tree. But who knows? U.S. tax laws are a can of worms designed to serve the wealthy. Some experts say Nelson is full of... beans. Don't forget James Huntsman, the surfing brother of the former Utah governor. He sued the church for fraud alleging it diverted tithing to build the City Creek Center. The suit was drop-kicked out of federal court. Say what you will, Wilson, but it's good to have God and expensive tax lawyers on your side.

SHERIFF DeSANTIS GUNNIN' FOR MICKEY MOUSE

Florida Gov. Ron “Make-My-Day” DeSantis, the presidential aspirant who is working overtime to out-Trump Trump, has a message for Mickey Mouse: “There is a new sheriff in town,” referring to Disney World and all its LGBT perverts — Goofy, Donald Duck, Pluto and the gang. “I will not allow a woke corporation based in California to run our state.” Florida legislators stripped Disney World of its 56-year-old special tax status as punishment for its wokeness. The fiasco came in the wake of DeSantis' “Never Say Gay” legislation that prohibits classroom discussions on sexual orientation and gender identity. Then-Disney CEO Bob Chapek called the law B.S. and apologized to employees and pledged to end donations to Republican candidates including DeSantis. The new law also gave DeSantis the authority to appoint the board that oversees Disney World. But there was just one little catch: Florida taxpayers would pay for Disney's firefighting, policing, road maintenance and would have to cover Disney's tax debt of $1billion. Oops — Florida lawmakers hastily renewed Disney's special tax status. But DeSantis declared victory anyway and quickly moved on for more culture-war headlines by blocking state colleges from teaching diversity, equity and critical race theory. Make my day, indeed.

Monday After the 70th PGA Show

It began in 1954 with a few sales reps displaying products from car trunks in a Dunedin, Fla parking lot and just as our game undergone tremendous changes so has the PGA Show in the intervening years.

The big question for the 70th edition held Jan. 24-27 was if the Show would recover from the pandemic induced cancellation in 2021 when a “virtual Show” was held that met with no one’s satisfaction followed by 2022 when returning to the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla. the number of exhibitors was down 40%, attendance was less than half of a “normal year” and most of the industry’s major companies did not exhibit.

Would companies again see the value of spending in some cases multiple millions of dollars to reach current and potential customers or would the computer age with a covid inspired hangover take another victim as it has with other trade shows?

Well, the question was answered this year and most assuredly in the positive.

A less enthusiastic opinion was voiced by some long-time attendees saying that with the number of golf rounds flourishing and record numbers of people taking up the game the Show, sans Covid-induced restrictions, is as always simply a reflection of the state of the industry.

We agree but there is no question the mood of the attendees was upbeat and looking forward to 2023 season. Many were of the opinion this could be a record year.

In addition to viewing and potentially purchasing the latest the industry has to offer PGA Professionals can gain continuing education credits by going to the Show and taking professional courses. These are the men and women who along with members of the Golf Course Superintendents Association make golf possible every day and the Show is an annual focus for them.

Major equipment company no shows, a couple somewhat surprising, continued with PXG, who has never exhibited and TaylorMade Golf, who has not had booth space since 2018. One that was previously a stalwart on the floor Tour Edge Golf opted out this year though top executives were in Orlando and seen at the Show. Wilson Golf also chose to not have booth space.

There also was a rumor making the rounds that the Show will move to the Dallas, Texas area where the PGA of America’s new corporate headquarters was built in suburban Frisco. Already the fall PGA Buying & Education Summit formerly held in Las Vegas has moved there. However, the PGA points out the amount of display floor space for a full PGA Show, hotel rooms, restaurants and other amenities are not presently available. Don’t you love rumors?

It’s a real shame when people buy properties they can’t afford, but the real shame is in capitalism. And that’s where me and my non-profits came in.

Our sports facilities are second to none. We have all sorts of tennis courts...grass, hard stuff, this dirt. I had them put this dirt one in because it replicates the tennis courts that starving kids in Bolivia probably play on.

Of course we have a world-renowned golf course, built by Allistair Mackenzie in 1911, twenty years before the club was founded. It hosted the first US Open south of the Mason-Dixon line, won by Ted Ray and journalists from both sides of the Atlantic praised it for it’s nuanced strategic qualities and how Mackenize was beholden to the natural landscape to sculpt the course’s challenges.

And in 2002, I had Pete Dye turn every hole into an island hole. You know, like at Sawgrass.
