Appearance of Osiris as the Userhat Comes from Nun 2022
Tumblr media
The January thaw is late. It's been coming later and later. And now, well into February it has appeared on the horizon. Chunks of ice still plague His River, but the water now flows sluggishly towards the falls.
It's the His first appearance since going to sleep during The Mysteries.
Tumblr media
The Userhat (strong in front) glides forth from the Nun (the primordial water). Upon its bow, Osiris stands tall and full of the same potential as the Nun. He looks to the distance, to spring, to rebirth, and the upcoming rites around the Lenten Season, Daylight Savings, the Divine Birth Mystery of Ra, and the Spring Equinox.

Hagging Out - February 2021
Step 1 - Find a New Recipe and Prepare
I read through the announcement and decided that, as usual with hagging out, I needed a new recipe. I spent a really long time on Google before finding a recipe using garlic and chicken thighs. The only downside was it called for an oven safe skillet or cast iron skillet, which I don't fucking have. The picture on the recipe page looked really good though, so I bought one.
Step 2 - Check Religious Calendar for Surprises
I don't know if it just illustrates how busy my religious calendar is, or what, but every Hagging Out has coincided with a religious festival. This month's was The Appearance of Osiris As the Userhat Comes from Nun. (Idfk what it really means either.) But it seemed kind of coincidental [as usual] that he showed up the day of this month's Hagging Out, what with the ancestor focus and all. So I decided he could get some of this too.
Step 3 - Get Home Late
One day a week, I get home on time. That's usually a Monday. The rest of the week, I'm still at work for a half hour or more after I should have left. I'm just really busy, juggling the management of about 70 active projects at once, so I'm always late.
Step 4 - Make It and Have Anxiety
I hate new recipes because my finished product doesn't look like the picture. But, I'm trying to (a) cook more and (b) explore outside my comfort zone. (Which is grilled cheese. I'm confident making that tho my husband's are better.) I did find sizzling the oil and butter in my seasoned skillet relaxing though?
Tumblr media
Seasoning the chicken was incredibly nerve wracking because the recipe was really unclear about how much of each spice (thyme & rosemary) it called for. But I did my best and then browned the top of the chicken and hoped for the best.
Tumblr media
My favorite part with the recipe was making the little juice stuff that I was supposed to drip over the cooked chicken. It smelled fucking amazing because there was garlic all over it. The least favorite part was the fact that my chicken thighs were so damn thicc, it took twice as long to cook in the oven. We didn't actually eat dinner until like 7.

Step 5 - Gods and Ancestors Eating
In the Kemetic tradition, technically the ancestors can only feast when Osiris does. It's a whole thing that is far too complicated to adequately explain right now. But the fact that a holiday of his showed up on the same day ensured they were both going to feast on this really fucking juicy chicken that I made all by myself.
I wish I had found a boat (that's what the Userhat is referring to in the name of this festival) to use for him though. He seemed okay with his usual resting place (a flower filled teacup) but I think having a boat for him could have made it feel more like I was feeding him and the Nun while the Userhat goes forth before the Nun.
To be fair, there were no complaints from the peanut gallery.

Osiris was fed first with his two ladies. He got incense too because, you know, got to purify some shit too.

The ancestors themselves just seemed thrilled to get some attention. I, uh, may be slacking in that department.
When I had finished feeding them both, I came out to the kitchen to find my husband hacking pieces of my meal off to eat. That's how I knew it was good.
Step 6 - Post Cooking Thoughts
Cooking is hard and far too fucking labor intensive.
This meal was really good and would have been okay if I had followed my initial instinct to not use rosemary. I fucking hate rosemary.
I need to probably cook more so I'm not emotionally, mentally, and physically exhausted when I give it a shot. ... Nah.
