Phylogenetics Reveals the Importance of Biodiversity to Food Plants in Mexico
Phylogenetics Reveals the Importance of Biodiversity to Food Plants in Mexico https://ift.tt/ZiL5xVS Díaz-Toribio and colleagues recently published a paper in AoB PLANTS about the evolutionary relationships and usage patterns of edible native plants in the Gulf of Mexico region. Their research gives insights into which plant groups have been preferred and selected for food over time, indicating the breadth of human diets and the use of regional flora resources.   They found that condiment species like peppers showed phylogenetic clustering, meaning related species were repeatedly used for the same purpose over time. Plant groups with wide leaves used for wrapping tamales also showed evolutionary convergence. Wild and cultivated edible plants belonged to identical lineages, with different species swapped in and out, showing people relied on the same useful plant families. However, wild versus cultivated plants used for condiments did come from different lineages. Understanding patterns in the traditional use of native plants gives clues to their potential nutritional value and biocultural heritage. Archaeologists believe Mesoamerica was a key centre of plant domestication, with crops like maize, beans, squash and chilli peppers originating in the region. Many wild greens and fruits there also remain important foods.  The researchers compiled a database of around 500 edible native vascular plants from the Gulf of Mexico Province in Mexico, noting which parts were used and whether plants were wild or cultivated. They generated phylogenetic trees to analyze evolutionary relationships and clustering of edible species and usage types. Results showed the highest diversity of lineages used as food, reflecting the breadth of human diets. Significant phylogenetic clustering occurred in certain branches for wild edible plants, condiments and wrappers. For instance, hot nodes for condiments appeared in Piperaceae peppers and Asteraceae marigolds. Despite wild versus cultivated species differences, plant families like Fabaceae legumes and Cactaceae cacti were preferred food sources either way. Díaz-Toribio and colleagues argue their results have implications for conservation in Mexico. They write: Research of the phylogenetics of edible plants like our study supports arguments for the conservation of incipiently cultivated species, varietal forms and wild types of already domesticated crops…. Furthermore, the estimation of PD [phylogenetic diversity] and identification of patterns of ethnobotanical convergence act to promote new research in ethnobiology… Díaz-Toribio et al. 2023 Overall, this evolutionary ethnobotany reveals how indigenous cultures have sustainably utilized the diversity of plants available to them for millennia. The phylogenetic patterns can guide the discovery of nutrition and cultivation potential in underused species. Most importantly, this is not a process that is over, with people still using wild as well as domesticated plants. Appreciating this biocultural heritage is crucial for food security and sustainable development. READ THE ARTICLE Díaz-Toribio, M.H., de-Nova, J.A., Piedra-Malagón, E.M., Angulo, D.F. and Sosa, V. Philly Food Fun – fANNEtastic meals | Registered Dietitian Blog
I spent the previous few days in Philadelphia for FNCE, the large annual convention for Registered Dietitians. I must take a while to digest all the pieces earlier than sharing my ideas on among the academic periods I attended, so for now I wished to only pop in and share some photographs of the meals I had whereas within the metropolis!
I arrived at FNCE late (most individuals arrive on Saturday) this yr since I used to be operating the Marine Corps 10ok on Sunday morning with Matt, however fortunately Philly is a simple prepare trip so I used to be in a position to head up there Sunday afternoon following the race.
I didn’t have any occasions to attend on Sunday night, so I used to be pumped to have the ability to get dinner with my school pal Turner who lives within the metropolis!
We began with joyful hour – cider for me, a cocktail for her – and a cheese board at a cool French place referred to as Good King Tavern.
They had a pleasant outside space which was good as a result of it was attractive exterior (the place was this climate on Sunday morning through the race, proper?)!
For dinner, Turner made us reservations at a cool Thai place referred to as Kalaya – it has gotten loads of buzz these days as among the finest eating places within the metropolis, AND Turner’s pal is the chef, so I used to be pumped to attempt it!
We began with the sakoo sai moo, which was tapioca dumplings with pork & peanut filling, pink chili & cilantro. Loved the artistic presentation with the cucumbers!
Next we shared the khao yum kamin – a southern Thai rice salad with toasted coconut, dried shrimp, chili flakes, seasonal greens, and fermented fish topped with a caramelized palm sugar dressing.
I cherished how crunchy this salad was – they blended it for us on the desk however I needed to take an image earlier than as a result of it was so lovely!
For our entree we shared the goong aob woon sen – baked shrimp with glass noodles, Chinese celery, garlic, ginger, cilantro, lengthy hots, oyster sauce and soy sauce. This was actually flavorful – yum.
My favourite dish of the night time, although, was truly the wok-fried cabbage (kalum tod nam pla) that got here really useful by our server – the sauce was simply garlic and fish sauce however man it was scrumptious… extremely flavorful.
Such a enjoyable night time and nice to see my pal!
Other meals highlights from the weekend included the toast at a restaurant referred to as Ok’far – I shared the smoked trout and beet toasts with my pal Alexis and each have been superior. The trout one had a bit egg in a gap baked into the toast under – so artistic!
This breakfast was particularly enjoyable due to the corporate – cherished catching up with fellow dietitians Lisa, Alex, Alexis, and Heather!
I additionally had a scrumptious lunch at Nom Wah, a dim sum restaurant close to the conference middle, with my pal Sara who works for Cabot – nice to meet up with her and this meal was superb, too.
Another nice meal was a breakfast occasion at Urban Farmer. Their shaved ham egg benedict with selfmade toast was scrumptious, and the area was actually fairly, too.
One extra Philly rec: try Love City Brewing! Fun ambiance and nice beer – my mates at Egg Nutrition Center hosted a contented hour there that I attended with my buddy Rachael and their blood orange bitter beer that was on faucet was superior.
Here we’re hamming (er, egging?) it up on the picture sales space.
Tumblr media
And now, it’s time to attempt to get some extra work accomplished earlier than Riese wakes up from her nap!
Have a enjoyable and spooky Halloween tomorrow, and I’ll see you guys again right here on Friday with both my FNCE academic session highlights recap if I can get it accomplished in time… or if not, some eats/train from the week.

Study Develops Herbicide-Resistant Super Basmati Rice Using CRISPR-Cas9
Study Develops Herbicide-Resistant Super Basmati Rice Using CRISPR-Cas9 https://ift.tt/gqslovO You can listen to this page as an audio file (English only) Rice is a staple food for billions of people worldwide, and Basmati rice is a highly prized variety known for its aromatic flavour and long grains. However, like all crops, rice is prone to weeds that compete for nutrients, water, and sunlight. To tackle this problem, Zafar and colleagues have successfully used the gene-editing tool called CRISPR-Cas9 to create a strain of Super Basmati rice that is resistant to a specific herbicide. This exciting development, published in AoB PLANTS, could help farmers save labour and water resources while controlling weed infestations. CRISPR (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats) is a naturally occurring defence mechanism found in bacteria that helps them fend off viral infections. Scientists have harnessed this system to create a powerful gene-editing tool called CRISPR-Cas9, which allows them to cut and edit DNA in living organisms precisely. This technology has the potential to revolutionize medicine, agriculture, and other fields by enabling targeted modifications to genes. The researchers in this study used a specific gene editing method called Homology-directed repair (HDR). HDR is a natural process that cells use to repair breaks in their DNA. By combining CRISPR-Cas9 with HDR, scientists can introduce specific changes to an organism’s DNA, such as adding, deleting, or modifying specific genes. This approach allows for precise and targeted gene editing, making it possible to create crops with desirable traits like resistance to diseases, improved nutritional content, or in this case, resistance to a particular herbicide. The researchers focused on a specific gene called Acetolactate Synthase (OsALS) to achieve herbicide resistance in Super Basmati rice. They introduced a small change in the gene that would make the rice resistant to the herbicide bispyribac-sodium. They then tested different configurations of the CRISPR-Cas9 system to find the most effective way to edit the OsALS gene in Super Basmati rice. After much experimentation, the team discovered the optimal configuration that allowed the CRISPR-Cas9 system to create precise edits to the OsALS gene in Super Basmati rice, making it resistant to the bispyribac-sodium herbicide. The researchers then tested the herbicide sensitivity of the modified rice, comparing it to other rice varieties. They found that the Super Basmati rice was more resistant to the herbicide than other previously tested Indica rice varieties. This successful application of the CRISPR-Cas9 and HDR system in Super Basmati rice opens up new possibilities for crop improvement. By using this gene-editing technology, scientists can create crop varieties with better resistance to diseases, pests, or other environmental factors, which could lead to increased crop yields and improved food security. READ THE ARTICLE Kashaf Zafar, Muhammad Zuhaib Khan, Imran Amin, Zahid Mukhtar, Mehak Zafar, Shahid Mansoor, Employing template-directed CRISPR-based editing of the OsALS gene to create herbicide tolerance in Basmati rice, AoB PLANTS, Volume 15, Issue 2, February 2023, plac059, https://doi.org/10.1093/aobpla/plac059 The post Study Develops Herbicide-Resistant Super Basmati Rice Using CRISPR-Cas9 appeared first on Botany One. via Botany One https://botany.one/ March 29, 2023 at 09:30AM

Are video games a fun way to unwind, or a deeper problem? My guest today is clear on his answer.
Dr. Sam Shay is a chiropractor with a background in functional nutrition and testing, but he hasn’t always been as healthy as he is today. Dr. Shay walked his own journey to overcome his 25-year addiction to video games, a 15-year addiction to sugar, as well as overcome his insomnia, gut problems, and low mood.
Now, Dr. Shay uses his experience and training to help those with gaming disorder unplug from their screens and plug back into their lives. Dr. Shay also coaches concerned family and friends of problem gamers on how to help support the unplugging process.
Episode Highlights: Gaming Addiction
the six major reasons video games are so addictive
important signs to look for in those struggling with gaming addiction
the primal reflex in the brain that makes game addiction more likely
why the “stereotypical gamers” (teenage boys) you may think of only makeup 17% of gamers today
why boredom is such a dangerous emotion and what to do about it as a parent
an important correlation (and a major difference) between game addiction and recreational drug addiction
how the CDC definition of heavy drinking also applies to gaming disorder
the reason to remove all gaming systems from the bedroom
good guidelines to establish for healthy gaming
an important reason not to play games at night for the sake of your nervous system!
the surprising reason gaming can lead to other risky behaviors
