lila's 2021 writing wrapped!! (i don't use spotify and i felt a little left out lmao) this has been my best and favorite year for writing, and i want to go over what i've written this year as well as tell yall what i have planned for next year. though we know thats very subject to change, since i can't stick to projects for shit and new ideas pop up like weeds.

projects i finished this year:

gold king, blue king (86k) the book i wrote and finished so i could query! i also did all the research/put together the querying materials this year. super, super proud of myself for that. it's very hard to keep going, but i'm trying.

a council of golden swords (96k) a book i had a sudden idea for while doing chores and decided to drop everything and commit. three months later, it was done as one of my proudest projects. this includes the in book short cyril's hell, which to this day is one of my favorite pieces i've ever written.

the order trilogy: order of the sun (72k), order of the ice (82k), and order of the phantom (81k) i wrote all three of these in about two months and it might be my proudest achievement of the year. i hit new personal bests for word counts in a day (my new record is now 11k!, and i wrote 25k in one weekend) and i learned so much about my process. just another project that proved nothing is beyond my reach.

when the witches call (112k and counting) am still editing this but i count it since i wrote 60k of it for nano. i know with more work i can make it exactly what i dream it is in my head, but i'm so proud of where it's at right now anyway.

brenin (44k) which i have been trying to finish for two years. i finished this literally in the first days of january but i'm still very proud.

i want it to be you, (23k) the camp nano project i honestly forgot about until now lmao

i also edited my first completed novel the ruby savior (113k) which included tense and style changes, and am halfway through editing the second and third books of that series up to my current standards

other things i wrote this year:

30k of of blood drawn, the third book in the revolution of nimath. also came up with the ideas and plot for those six books.

shorts for the adventures of the existential three (bailed on that but it's fine)

10k of queen artura and the knights of arrinshire, the queer king arthur retelling i've been trying to write for two years

11k of a game of golden wind, the wlw fantasy sports rivalry novel set in the acogs universe. very excited to eventually get back to this!!

a 6k short for the death of seret ashling, which i also kinda bailed on. endlessly proud of this too.

various thousands of words for the last three eingard series books

projects for next year:

edgelia and other poetry, a wlw tragedy inspired by the song of achilles and @aelenko's he called me finch

as the sea horn blares, a mlm romance with a side of crime family plot in which a traumatized crime boss falls in love with his therapist

the daughter of esla, book 5 of the eingard series. realllly hoping to finish at least one tes book next year. it's been a year and a half since i finished the 4th book, and i really want to see this series through.

a massive, MASSIVE thank you to @magic-is-something-we-create for being the best friend one could have, fundamentally changing the way i create for the better, drawing my freakin characters like WHAT, listening to my endless fandom and writing rambles, reading my books, letting me read your book, and the everyday conversations. i love you dearly <3

the stormlight archive, which easily made it into my top 10 books ever

the first mistborn book

any way the wind blows by rainbow rowell, the incredible and mindblowing end to one of my favorite trilogies

one last stop by casey mcquiston, which had everything i loved about rwrb and was wonderful

rule of wolves by leigh bardugo

return of the thief by meghan whalen turner, the final book in my tied for favorite series ever. it was an incredible, tear jerking end

blood of elves, which met expectations in all the weirdest ways

empress of salt and fortune & when the tiger came down the mountain by nghi vo, a wonderful queer read!!

this drawing has been, in essence, three years in the making! it's a "remake" of my very first digital drawing (the oldest "my art" tagged post on this account), that being...

this! (resized to match the canvas size I currently use)

like, I can see so much improvement between these, but that's not even taking into account how long each of them took me! the first drawing of Amber took me three months (started Dec 19, 2018; ended February 24, 2019), but the new drawing? exactly one week (Dec 27, 2021 - Jan 3, 2022). that's it! and I could've done it faster if I hadn't had other things to do!!

There are obviously things that I'd like to change and improve upon in the new one, but that's the thing: they will be! not in this drawing specifically, but those areas will keep on improving in whatever I draw in the future! I am just so excited about this piece asjkhglkjahs

Anyway, thoughts on the progress!

The newer picture is actually close to how I envisioned the original! I wanted Amber to be walking along, talking to Sen (well, I used my irl name for the PSMD hero, so I'm just gonna call him Sen dsklajh) - that's why she has her mouth open in the original! but I realized at some point that that wasn't going to be feasible at the level of drawing skill I had at that point, so I finished with the best drawing of Amber that I could

Much like the original drawing of Amber, this one had a reversion from one of the changes I made! At one point I was thinking of having her looking away from Sen, kind of absentmindedly talking instead of telling him about something, but I changed it after realizing I wanted them looking at each other

This drawing is as much of an experiment as my first one was, in three major ways: the angle, the poses, and the shading!

While I've drawn characters at a three-quarters angle, side-on, and facing forward, I don't think I've ever had them at quite this angle before, which was an experience! it wasn't as hard as I got further into it, but it was very weird at some points.

As for the poses, I have never drawn a character fully walking before. like, in that first photo of Amber alone, you can see that she's kind of just standing there with one of her front legs up. she's supposed to be walking! drawing the legs the way I did in the newer one is something I've never tried before, and while it's certainly not perfect, it is so awesome seeing the difference.

And finally, the shading! I have never done "hard" shadows like this before; all of the art I've done before this one has had softer, more subtle shading (or, of course, no shading at all like the one I did of my pokésona last year!) but honestly, that may be the one thing I like the most about this drawing. the sheer amount of depth that it added is absolutely astonishing, and I just love how it looks - even while knowing that I can very much improve from here!

And now for a fun little tidbit: I didn't realize this before I started, but the artwork I used for their references - specifically, the Global Link art - uses the same color for Riolu's eyes as it does for Fennekin's accents (eyes, ear fluff, and tail tip), and Fennekin's nose has the same dark gray as the shaded gray parts of Riolu!

PSMD partner is still my favorite character in any video game I've played, and I do not see that changing anytime soon

Calanthia

Favorite fic or drawing: My favorite drawing of Calanthia is definitely this (it’s one of my favorite things I’ve ever drawn, full stop, actually, so yeah). I’m not sure about fic, a lot of what I’ve written for her is currently under the spoiler ban and her 7KPP week was like two years ago and I have the retentive memory of a goldfish. >

What drew their LI to them? I think Jasper was initially - reluctantly - charmed by the bright-eyed eagerness to Make A Difference and the way she kept hurling herself into the breach (especially because, after the ride and her near-death experience, it became rather clear that a lot of her smiles were… not faked, exactly, but covering for the fact that she was at least 30% terrified and improvising madly). I think the pivot point was probably the trial, because Anthy is VERY conscious of how others perceive her and usually does her best to present herself well, but that week she basically dumped all nonessential functions so she could devote every possible second to not just saving Imogen, but removing all possible doubt so suspicion wouldn’t follow the poor girl around. (I think he also probably saw her, at least once, smiling at Jarrod like she wanted to flay him while shaming him into being less of an unmitigated ass, because I have to believe Jasper would have A Feeling about that.)

Anything you’d love to see? For Calanthia, anything with Avalie is always good! Calanthia is enough of an idealist to believe the best of her, but she’s also quick enough to keep up with the repartee and manipulation, so they have a really fun dynamic. Fic or art of them hanging out and/or sneakily running the world would be awesome.

Valeriya

Favorite fic or drawing: My favorite thing I’ve drawn of Valya is probably this because it is both happy and Soft.

What drew their LI to them? I imagine seeing her across the room at the Welcome Feast, Lyon might well have expected to dislike her, because the Revairan delegation is, you know, mostly terrible - and because she put on a very good show of being a charming people person who belonged amongst said terrible people. He wound up drawn to her because she’s secretly a grumpy hedgehog who would have LOVED to join him in hiding in the library nerding out about history and philosophy and ignoring literally everyone else on the Isle. (It definitely helps that she overhears his conversation with Falon about not marrying and therefore writes him off her list of possible spouses before they’ve interacted twice; he can tell she’s not setting her cap at him, but she keeps turning up anyway because, for all her obvious ambition, there is nothing she’d rather do than hang out in the library with him nerding out about history and philosophy.) I honestly have no idea quite when Lyon realized he was in trouble - I’m pretty sure he was fighting himself about it basically the second he DID realize, though.

Anything you’d love to see? For writing, a third party’s view on the pair of them could be really entertaining, because the relationship has to look just. SO strange, from the outside. The whole Revairan court is pretty sure Valya murdered her husband, even if they can’t prove it - Jarrod calls her a spider right off the bat, in-game, and that’s what pretty much everyone thinks of her. An interesting spider full of engaging conversation! But still; definitely venomous, may kill you. And then there’s Lyon, who’s an impeccable judge of character and does not like people, as a rule, who has said he doesn’t want to marry at all, and who spends all his time hiding in the library. And Valeriya could have married Lisle, so Lyon, while a Duke, wasn’t even her best matrimonial prospect! It must be so confusing. For art, honestly anything, Valya and Lyon are both very pretty, but they’re both probably happiest at home or in a library or both.

Nisha

Favorite fic or drawing: I… appear not to have actually posted any of my fic about Nee or most of the art, which is weird, but I’m not cleaning anything up until my gift stuff is done SO: this is the only thing I’ve drawn of her that has made it onto the internet.

What drew their LI to them? Zarad flirts at the Welcome Feast to be a brat; he intends to mostly avoid her while they’re at the Summit just like he’d been doing for years in Corval. Nisha has a reputation in the Corvali court for matchmaking, which most reasonable paranoid Corvali find worrying because living in the inner court ought to make it Very Difficult to matchmake at all, let alone do it often and well enough to get a reputation for it. Nisha has nonetheless managed to help several friends and acquaintances into marriages that are not just politically or financially sensible but also appear to be genuinely happy. (Really, she brings the Summit blackmail on herself; if she was going to do all that she should have done it stealthily. She’s clever but she’s not always very sensible.) So avoiding her would be reasonable, but Zarad also kind of wants to at least meet her, because she’s been his partner in crime for years! Blain cannot ever prove anything, but Zarad and Nisha have been teaming up to take him down a peg or three since childhood. Any ill fortune that befalls Blain could originate from Nee, or Zarad, or be simple divine retribution, or all of the above. So of course Zarad does meet her, and she turns out to be great fun, and also when she says she thinks he’s lonely, she says it like she is, too, and OOPS, Zarad is emotionally-literate enough to realize right then that he might be in a bit of trouble.

Anything you’d love to see? I have not done nearly enough for Nee, so almost anything! She might be tougher to make something for than the Widows because there’s less nailed down. Or that might be free real estate. I have no idea. She is good friends with Constance and goes to the Summit mostly for fun while fully intending to go home to her mother at the end, so she is a WEIRD delegate and I imagine Constance is deeply confused by her, if Constance PoV is something you’re comfortable writing? Alternately, for art, I really love Zarad’s story about the CL jailbreaking Constance and showing her around the city, so that could be really fun!
