Vaakot - Wretched Torment (Demo, 2023)

You know how sometimes raw black metal is so raw and noisy that at certain points it unconsciously crosses over into noise and industrial territory? In Vaakot's case, there is nothing unconscious or accidental about it, in fact they relish straddling that border with their especially gnarly take on the genre. "Wretched Torment" is filthy stuff, the kind you'd expect from vampire obsessed French people rather than someone living in Fresno, California, but it also kinda explains the whole urban decay mood they have going. Did we already mention it's gnarly? It, is. Gnarly, there, three times, to make it stick. Now stop reading and go make your neighbours wonder if there's something wrong with your speakers.

The most interesting band of the last decade, mixing slave spirituals, blues, and black metal into one sound. This third LP adds a good dash of Industrial and a lot more black metal. Frontman Manuel Gangeux’s screams have improved and because of that, this album expresses a ton of fury. One of my favorite bands.
