I just realized that I did not give credit to the fantastic Dimitrius Collins and Andrew Perusi for their sonic fireworks of a live performance on Friday, as well.

They’re incredibly talented guys and there’s no better live performance pleasure than hearing them all just kick out a random-seeming jam together, like five pieces of a tightly wound sound machine.

That was one of the biggest takeaways I got from seeing them play live: Tight, tight, tiiiight, like playing is akin to breathing, drinking, eating and sleeping for these guys. It’s almost like you can see a physical manifestation of the sound just flowing out of them.

Some additional takes from my younger sister, who likes them but wasn’t in hardcore fan territory (though, that appeared to change for the better, by the end of the night 🤣) and was really there to join me:

She said she was moved to tears a couple of times (courtesy of both Taylor on “Been There Before” and “Weird” and Isaac; “Write You A Song”).

She could not get over seeing Taylor in Surfer-Jeremiah-Johnson hunk state vs. her pop culture saturation period of Hanson being a combo of 90’s memories and playing the “MMMBop” vid for her children. Direct (approvingly delivered) quote: “Wow, woo, that is NOT how he used to look, that’s for sure.” This is the common response from the general public, though and that’s why they periodically get the “WOW, you’ve changed!” from interviewers 🤣. It’s just the natural reaction, even if it seems it’s silly to say in hindsight (as they were literally kids, as many remember them.)

Following Zac’s drum solo: “WOW. WOW.

Also, I must confirm:

I stand by the assertion that even as an adult with stronger features, Zac is still the perfect face for Link in a live-action “Legend of Zelda” film role (sans elf ears, obviously). Perhaps the only missed opportunity he’ll have to lament later in life 🤣.

And Isaac looked eerily like a brother to Austin Butler’s “Elvis.” 🤣

Hanson en el Teatro Ópera: Fired Up

La pasada semana, Hanson regresó a la Argentina para festejar su aniversario número 25. Hace mucho tiempo que aquellos niños que conquistaron al mundo han crecido y eso se nota no solamente en el aspecto físico, sino también en el musical. Criados bajo la tradición del rock clásico, llegaron al éxito instantáneo por el lado del pop más comercial, pero a medida que los años fueron pasando las guitarras y la potencia se hicieron parte de su genética. Justamente eso fue lo que dejaron en claro durante las dos horas que duró su show en el Teatro Ópera Orbis, donde también le dieron el gusto a un público mayoritariamente femenino y cantaron sus más grandes hits radiales en una noche de lujo.

La previa al primer show de Hanson en el país luego de seis años de ausencia encontró a muchas familias sentadas en sus butacas y a alguna que otra pareja joven pensando en salir disparada hacia adelante en el momento en el que comenzase todo. Mientras por los parlantes sonaba la música seleccionada por Isaac (guitarra y voz), Taylor (piano y voz) y Zac Hanson (batería y voz), las luces del escenario se apagaron cerca de las 21:00 como primer aviso de que los norteamericanos se encontraban listos para subir a las tablas.

Cuando el teatro quedó completamente a oscuras, los gritos al por mayor se adueñaron de todo y no hubo nadie que se quedase sentado desde allí hasta el final. El excelente sonido quedó demostrado ya en la primera canción, la romántica “Waiting For This” que encontró al bajista Andrew Perusi alternando a la perfección entre el blues y el funk. Desde las guitarras llegó un riff más que elegante y los tres ya no tan jóvenes demostraron que sus voces se encuentran en un momento sensacional. Al grito de “shout it out”, todos terminaron bailando e Isaac le dio cierre al primer paso de la noche con un solo muy blusero, algo que es difícil de insertar dentro de un esquema más pop, pero que quedó excelente.

Para sorpresa de quienes hayan estado atentos al tramo anterior de la gira y los recitales recientes en el continente, los hermanos decidieron en un giro de 180° cambiar por completo una lista que tranquilamente podría tener tres o cuatro variantes debido a la cantidad interminable de hits que poseen en sus arcas.

La inyección de adrenalina se mantuvo a pleno durante “Where's The Love”, con las tres voces predicando por el amor y mostrando una madurez sonora colectiva realmente sorprendente. Después de otra muy buena intervención de Isaac, la locura continuó con “Man From Milwaukee”, canción que logró ser transformada en un exponente del Synth-Pop. Una melodía ideal para bailar, guitarras con efectos desde la pedalera y seducción total para que todos los presentes cayesen a sus pies, preludio ideal para un final a puro salto con el bajo y la guitarra mostrando su mayor crudeza haciendo mover a todos sin parar.

Con el tanque completo todavía, sin exhibir ni un poco de cansancio, el recorrido por sus 25 años de éxitos los encontró repasando ese blues del delta llamado “Thinking 'Bout Somethin'”, con Taylor brillando desde el piano y dominando el territorio de la voz. El toque suave de Zac en los platillos fue algo sin dudas destacable, llevando el ritmo frenético del tema y liberando a sus hermanos para que jueguen encima de la melodía.

El saludo para tomar un poco de aire les permitió reacomodarse y disparar – previo aviso de que la noche iba a ser muy larga- una aceitada versión de “Look at You” que inauguró el segmento más romántico y pop del setlist. Un viaje directo hacia la década de los 90’, que también incluyó la ternura de “This Time Around” y esa rendición al romance más clásico - con tintes de jazz en la batería y el piano- que es “Weird”.

La gran ovación llegó después de “Go”, donde Hanson retomó la velocidad de los primeros temas pero sin nunca perder el toque dulce. La guitarra electro-acústica se impuso y las tres voces demostraron su capacidad para mezclarse y jugar con las tonalidades a gusto, tanto a coro como en los momentos individuales de cada una.

“Madeline” y “Juliet” llegaron una detrás de la otra, dando comienzo a la parte puramente acústica. Dos baladas simplemente hermosas y llenas de calidez y ritmo, con la intención de endulzar oídos pero no por ello olvidarse de los pies de los presentes. Luego de agradecer tantos años de apoyo incondicional, volvieron a abrir el cajón de los recuerdos para regalarle a Buenos Aires “Strong Enough to Break” y “Summertime Blues”, piezas en la que se lució la capacidad de los hermanos Hanson para crear baladas con mucho poder, ritmo y emotividad.

Ya rozando la primera hora del show, la temperatura empezó a levantarse una vez más con “Watch Over Me”, pero entre sonrisas y miradas cómplices con el público, volvieron a bajar los ánimos de la mano de “I Will Come To You” que básicamente es uno de esos viejos lentos que ya no se escuchan y que llaman a prender los encendedores y agitarlos sin parar.

Claro que no iba a faltar el pedido por parte de Taylor para que los que aún no se habían unido a la comunidad virtual de la banda lo hiciesen. Más allá de lo anecdótico, es cierto que allí Hanson suele grabar muchos temas por año aunque no haya un nuevo disco y uno de los más populares de todos ellos es “On And On”, cantada íntegramente por Zac y logrando unir por completo al trío con sus aficionados.

Para el tramo final, volvieron a la potencia y los riffs bien rockeros del principio, comenzando por su Nuevo single “I Was Born” un híbrido interesante entre la clave boy-band y su cara más madura y guitarrera, con el bajo como hilo conductor llegando a fundirse con el golpeo de la batería por momentos.

La canción de amor absoluta apareció con “A Minute Without You” pero esta vez los fanáticos se comieron el amago, pues al instante engancharon “Get the Girl Back”, que directamente es una invitación al baile eterno. Perusi abrió el juego a pura finta y la batería le puso mucho funk a la melodía, recordando a “Gotta Give It Up” de Marvin Gaye aunque sin llegar jamás a ser un plagio ni mucho menos.

El piano se prendió fuego cuando comenzó “Give A Little”, dándole a la canción un ritmo impresionante y comprobando in situ que Hanson, además de tener un título mundial en baladas, tiene también la fórmula para que uno pierda el control del cuerpo por completo.

Las dos horas de recital se encontraban en el horizonte, quedando tiempo para varias canciones más tal cual habían prometido los hermanos. Con “And I Waited” se prepararon con mucha tranquilidad para tal vez la bomba más esperada de la noche. Al grito de “nos vamos 20 años atrás, esta tal vez sea la primera canción nuestra que escucharon”, no tardaron en detonar el Ópera gracias a una versión muy rockera y festiva de “MMMBop” que hizo delirar a todos y convenció a los que estaban en el sector trasero de las plateas de acercarse hasta el borde del escenario mientras cientos de globos se agitaban en el aire.

El estallido final llegó con la tríada potente y rutera compuesta por “If Only”, “Fired Up” e “In the City” que los vio retirarse bajo una tremenda ovación de la cual inevitablemente iban a tener que regresar. Minutos mediaron para que Hanson pisase el escenario una vez más y se despachase con una versión a capella de “Rockin' Robin” (un viejo rock and roll clásico de Bobby Day) y luego tomasen sus instrumentos para rendirle homenaje al único e inigualable Chuck Berry con una versión impecable de “Johnny B. Goode” que hizo saltar y bailar a todos aunque cantar solamente a los pocos que sabían quién era el autor de la canción.

Para el adios eligieron “Lost Without Each Other”, una canción que se encuentra a la altura de esa frase lanzada por Isaac antes de dar rienda suelta a la locura: “Inspired by rock and roll”. Y razón tiene el mayor de los Hanson, ya que es evidente que más allá de que fue dentro del pop-rock donde ascendieron desde muy pequeños, el rock más puro jamás dejó de correr por sus venas.

La promesa de volver pronto quedó flotando en el aire con decisión luego de los aplausos y el saludo con foto a espaldas del público cerrase el círculo a la perfección. Los Hanson son locales en la Argentina y es claro que nunca más se van a tomar tanto tiempo para regresar.

audiobridge has a simple proposal: Most of what you need to make quality recorded music–multitracking, for example–can be packed into a smartphone.

This proposal is more radical than it sounds at first. The world’s more than 7 billion phones can now act as little recording studios, ready for everyone, everywhere to lay down ideas, play with arrangements, and make music. “We’re making something for everyone, not just for pros or aspiring pros, but for the entire world, including young people and kids,” says audiobridge founder and CEO Matt Miller, himself an experienced musician, session player, and songwriter. “That’s the vision, to have the power of Pro Tools and the simplicity of a voice memo.”

The vision is now available as an iOS app for free. The app reflects a reality where major hits are being composed on phones, and where many successful songwriters first record their ideas on the fly via hurried voice memos. audiobridge’s multi-track capabilities let composers and songwriters take things further, turning hummed lines into full arrangement sketches (or finished tracks). In addition, due to lockdown, audiobridge’s remote collaboration features have led monthly recorded hours on the app to skyrocket, growing 38x between May 2019 and May 2020. During the same period, the app has increased its MAU tenfold to more than 10K with minimal promotion.

Making serious music on a smartphone makes sense to many musicians and producers, people who may not have the resources to invest in a pricy home studio or buy expensive studio time, and who already use their phones to create. Miller knows their struggle well; he was a working musician who did everything from touring the college circuit to writing songs for other artists. In LA clubs, he would often play five hours a night as part of blues bands, mastering his craft well enough to get regular calls for studio sessions. For his various projects, he longed to get ideas down fast and share them quickly with collaborators, even once he shifted focus from full-time music to freelance software development, to eventually running his own software development company.

Miller figured a mobile app for multitracking and collaboration was around the corner. “But it was just never done,” he says. “By a certain time, I had done enough development to know how the tech works, and as a musician, I knew what exactly I had been seeing in my head for years. It was naturally something I ended up doing once I had the resources, with a few lightbulb moments along the way.”

Miller knew from the beginning that the design and user experience would be key to making the app intuitive, so a musician could download, pick up her phone, and get recording immediately. To pack the powerful features of digital audio workstations onto a small device, however, you need to understand exactly what people need to see and how to streamline their work. “It’s all about UX. What we’ve done very consciously is keep it mobile only and keep it simple,” says Miller. “audiobridge only works in portrait mode and doesn’t support landscape, for example. We’ve embraced the constraints, inserting the recording process into how people already use their devices.”

To simplify the app interface yet keep all the features, audiobridge’s development team has strived to automate key moments. Many creators don’t want a full buffet of detailed options; they just want their work to sound good. “The question is how do we add features when we’re out of room on a small screen without creating problems. That’s where machine learning and other automation comes in. You automate as much of the extraneous process as possible,” Miller explains.

Automation and tech tools have historically led to new sounds and creative practices, and audiobridge hopes to empower people to find them. This also means welcoming developers with cool ideas, effects, or features that can work with the app without audiobridge having to build them in house from scratch. “We love community involvement,” enthuses Andrew Perusi, audiobridge’s product partnership manager (and the bassist for pop rock band Hanson). “The artists who use our platform and the new creative ways they engage with their collaborators help shape audiobridge. User input is a big part of our story, and it’s how we’ve built audiobridge from the beginning.”

“There’s a lot of talk in the music tech space about democratizing music creation, but it’s intellectually dishonest,” states Miller. “They may say it but they don’t do it. Some companies have really cool powerful tech that can make the creation process open to all, but they are using these old-school business models, which often set up barriers to music creation. No one is willing to admit that they don’t know yet what models might fit this new creativity, or that they may actually be setting up unnecessary barriers for musicians.” This can lead to bizarre, nonsensical hybrids, when the old legacy business practices or processes get tacked onto innovative products, in the interest of appeasing antsy investors and making money now.

Miller, Perusi, and audiobridge see it differently, sticking to a truly democratic model inspired by the innovative speed of open source software approaches. “You can’t do things the old way,” Miller insists. “You need to think outside the industry” and work within a small device everyone knows and loves.
