BYF/DNI
Hey! I'm Moo and this is my stimblog! Before we get into the DNI...
If you're here to say I've 1. violated your DNI in any way or 2. have used a gif/reblogged an original post or directly from someone in poor standing with the stim community or that goes against my own DNI; please leave me a nice DM about it and I'll deal with the situation ASAP.
Please note that I don't read full DNIs of people who I don't follow unless I use a gif in an original stimboard, and even then I'm only human and may have skimmed over something, or I may not have full knowledge of a subject or term (i.e. I don't tend to have an opinion on things I'm not well educated on). I also do not comb blogs for drama and bad takes even if I use a gif of theirs, I go by their DNI, especially if I don't intend to follow. If I have reblogged or otherwise used gifs from a user that has known issues, again, lemme know! I've not been on tumblr in a couple years, so I certainly haven't kept up on who and who not to follow, and I don't want to expose myself or others to unsavory or unsafe people.
That said, lets get right to it- (DNI and other info under the cut)
DNI Criteria
Unfortunately, I feel like this is necessary. I know most people who actually fit into these guidelines will more than likely choose not to listen, and it serves more as peace of mind for followers and other creators. So for those people, or for those respectful few who fit this criteria, here you go!
It's pretty basic criteria here. If you're: LGBTQ+ phobic of any kind, ace-exclusionist, racist, antisemetic, ableist, a tr/nsmed, a M/A/P, just a generally bigoted person and/or someone who fits into any adjacent category to the aforementioned criteria? You'll be blocked if I catch you here. Kink blogs, especially sexual CG/L blogs, will be blocked on sight. I really don't care what you’re into or what you do on your own time, but this is not the place for it nor do I personally wanna know about it (Also CG/L squicks me out).
I do intend to do some ship boards here as well, so I'd like to add this: I don't respect people who ship minor characters and adults, ship inc/est or blatantly abusive relationships. If you have interest in media that tactfully explores these themes and shows them as the atrocities they are: this is not directed at you! However please know that if you enjoy these themes for what they are, or if you ship pairings with these dynamics (especially if you are very public and vocal about it) - you are all but inherently glorifying them, and I don't really wanna interact with you.
Mod and Blog
My name's Moo, I'm Genderfluid, and I'm 24. I'll be the only mod on the blog, ever! That's all you need to know really. While I am neurodivergent, I don't talk about personal information like mental diagnoses and such publicly for my own privacy and comfort. So I'll keep mostly to myself, and this blog should be pretty chill and discourse free.
Rules
- I do my best to respect other creators DNIs and I expect people who reblog from me to do so as well. If I'm informed of/catch you not doing just that, I will block you.
-Credit the original makers of a gif. I rarely have the time to make my own and I mostly just enjoy compiling things into a board and reblogging things that make my brain go brr so don't credit me for someone elses work. I will always credit the gif maker by linking to the gif in question in my post. If the link is broken, I'll try to do my best to fix it if possible so long as that's brought to my attention.
- I do take requests but I treat them more like suggestions, which means I reserve the right not to do one if I don't want to. Please do not be upset if this happens! I do this as a fun little passtime on occassion. Feel free to send your ask a couple times if you think tumblr ate it, but try to cap it off at 3, maximum, or one DM.
- Be kind! To me, in my replies and tags, to askers and OPs, and in general on this blog. This is not the place for you to be hateful.
- Understand that none of my rules, my DNI, or aspects of myself and how I run this blog are up for debate. While I will answer clarifying questions assuming they aren’t prying, I don't really care to get into arguments about my own boundaries.
- More rules will be added if necessary, but seeing as this is a stimblog I really shouldn't need to add more. Know if you break those rules or ignore my DNI and I catch you or am told, I will be blocking you.
What I Will Do:
- Ship Boards!
- Anything from my primary interests (My Hero Academia, Pokemon, Cookie Run, Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons, Animal Crossing, Don't Starve- just to name a handful)
- Animals, themes, items and concepts
- Honestly most things, just ask if you're curious!
What I Won't Do:
- Real people (celebrities, youtubers, historical figures, etc.)
- Bands/Albums/Music (I'm just not very good at it!)
- Media and Characters that are highly problematic*/I personally dislike (As an example: Ghetsis from pokemon is both of those things.)
- Things that just don't interest me (Voltron, for example, isn't something I dislike or thats inherently problematic, but I just don't care/know enough to put a board together)
*Problematic is a word that's thrown around from everything from outright evil behavior to minor character flaws, so I wanna throw out here that I understand media and characters are complex! Highly problematic in this case means that it glorifies unsavory themes like bigotry and genuinely harmful, predatory behavior. If you don't know, it doesn't hurt to ask.
Some specific things I won't do:
-Kingdom Hearts
-Mogeko Castle or related media
-Made in Abyss
-Hetalia
-Harry Potter
-Homestuck (Note: I am an ex homestuck and I do actually still hold certain characters dear, albeit detached from the source media. These characters may show up on this blog (but probably not), and if so then this will be my only interaction with this source)
Tag list
I'll add a link to this if/when I decide to make one (I probably won't to be honest)

Health Workers Unions See Surge in Interest Amid Covid
Tumblr media
This story also ran on NPR. It can be republished for free.
The nurses at Mission Hospital in Asheville, North Carolina, declared on March 6 — by filing the official paperwork — that they were ready to vote on the prospect of joining a national union. At the time, they were motivated by the desire for more nurses and support staff, and to have a voice in hospital decisions.
A week later, as the covid-19 pandemic bore down on the state, the effort was put on hold, and everyone scrambled to respond to the coronavirus. But the nurses’ long-standing concerns only became heightened during the crisis, and new issues they’d never considered suddenly became urgent problems.
Staffers struggled to find masks and other protective equipment, said nurses interviewed for this story. The hospital discouraged them from wearing masks one day and required masks 10 days later. The staff wasn’t consistently tested for covid and often not even notified when exposed to covid-positive patients. According to the nurses and a review of safety complaints made to federal regulators, the concerns persisted for months. And some nurses said the situation fueled doubts about whether hospital executives were prioritizing staff and patients, or the bottom line.
By the time the nurses held their election in September — six months after they had filed paperwork to do so — 70% voted to unionize. In a historically anti-union state with right-to-work laws and the second-least unionized workforce in the country, that margin of victory is a significant feat, said academic experts who study labor movements.
That it occurred during the pandemic is no coincidence.
For months now, front-line health workers across the country have faced a perpetual lack of personal protective equipment, or PPE, and inconsistent safety measures. Studies show they’re more likely to be infected by the coronavirus than the general population, and hundreds have died, according to reporting by KHN and The Guardian.
Many workers say employers and government systems that are meant to protect them have failed.
Research shows that health facilities with unions have better patient outcomes and are more likely to have inspections that can find and correct workplace hazards. One study found New York nursing homes with unionized workers had lower covid mortality rates, as well as better access to PPE and stronger infection control measures, than nonunion facilities.
Recognizing that, some workers — like the nurses at Mission Hospital — are forming new unions or thinking about organizing for the first time. Others, who already belong to a union, are taking more active leadership roles, voting to strike, launching public information campaigns and filing lawsuits against employers.
“The urgency and desperation we’ve heard from workers is at a pitch I haven’t experienced before in 20 years of this work,” said Cass Gualvez, organizing director for Service Employees International Union-United Healthcare Workers West in California. “We’ve talked to workers who said, ‘I was dead set against a union five years ago, but covid has changed that.’”
In response to union actions, many hospitals across the country have said worker safety is already their top priority, and unions are taking advantage of a difficult situation to divide staff and management, rather than working together.
Labor experts say it’s too soon to know if the outrage over working conditions will translate into an increase in union membership, but early indications suggest a small uptick. Of the approximately 1,500 petitions for union representation posted on the National Labor Relations Board website in 2020, 16% appear related to the health care field, up from 14% the previous year.
In Colorado, SEIU Local 105 health care organizing director Stephanie Felix-Sowy said her team is fielding dozens of calls a month from nonunion workers interested in joining. Not only are nurses and respiratory therapists reaching out, but dietary workers and cleaning staff are as well, including several from rural parts of the state where union representation has traditionally been low.
“The pandemic didn’t create most of the root problems they’re concerned about,” she said. “But it amplified them and the need to address them.”
A nurse for 30 years, Amy Waters had always been aware of a mostly unspoken but widespread sentiment that talking about unions could endanger her job. But after HCA Healthcare took over Mission Health in 2019, she saw nurses and support staff members being cut and she worried about the effect on patient care. Joining National Nurses United could help, she thought. During the pandemic, her fears only worsened. At times, nurses cared for seven patients at once, despite research indicating four is a reasonable number.
In a statement, Mission Health said it has adequate staffing and is aggressively recruiting nurses. “We have the beds, staffing, PPE supplies and equipment we need at this time and we are well-equipped to handle any potential surge,” spokesperson Nancy Lindell wrote. The hospital has required universal masking since March and requires staff members who test positive to stay home, she added.
Although the nurses didn’t vote to unionize until September, Waters said, they began acting collectively from the early days of the pandemic. They drafted a petition and sent a letter to administrators together. When the hospital agreed to provide advanced training on how to use PPE to protect against covid transmission, it was a small but significant victory, Waters said.
“Seeing that change brought a fair number of nurses who had still been undecided about the union to feel like, ‘Yeah, if we work together, we can make change,’” she said.
Old Concerns Heightened, New Issues Arise
Even as union membership in most industries has declined in recent years, health workers unions have remained relatively stable. Experts say it’s partly because of the focus on patient care issues, like safe staffing ratios, which resonate widely and have only grown during the pandemic.
At St. Mary Medical Center outside Philadelphia, short staffing led nurses to strike in November. Donna Halpern, a nurse on the cardiovascular and critical care unit, said staffing had been a point of negotiation with the hospital since the nurses joined the Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses and Allied Professionals in 2019. But with another surge of covid cases approaching, the nurses decided not to wait any longer to take action, she said.
A month later, officials with Trinity Health Mid-Atlantic, which owns the hospital, announced a tentative labor agreement with the union. The contract “gives nurses a voice in discussions on staffing while preserving the hospital’s right and authority to make all staffing decisions,” the hospital said in a statement.
In Colorado, where state inspection reports show understaffing led to a patient death at a suburban Denver hospital, SEIU Local 105 has launched a media campaign about unsafe practices by the hospital’s parent company, HealthOne. The union doesn’t represent HealthOne employees, but union leaders said they felt compelled to act after repeatedly hearing concerns.
In a statement, HealthOne said staffing levels are appropriate across its hospitals and it is continuing to recruit and hire staff members.
Covid is also raising entirely new issues for workers to organize around. At the forefront is the lack of PPE, which was noted in one-third of the health worker deaths catalogued by KHN and The Guardian.
Nurses at Albany Medical Center in New York picketed on Dec. 1 with signs demanding PPE and spoke about having to reuse N95 masks up to 20 times.
The hospital told KHN it follows federal guidelines for reprocessing masks, but intensive care nurse Jennifer Bejo said it feels unsafe.
At MultiCare Indigo Urgent Care clinics in Washington state, staff members were provided only surgical masks and face shields for months, even when performing covid tests and seeing covid patients, said Dr. Brian Fox, who works at the clinics and is a member of the Union of American Physicians and Dentists. The company agreed to provide N95 masks after staffers went on a two-day strike in November.
MultiCare said it found another vendor for N95s in early December and is in the process of distributing them.
PPE has also become a rallying point for nonunion workers. At a November event handing out PPE in El Paso, Texas, more than 60 workers showed up in the first hour, said SEIU Texas President Elsa Caballero. Many were not union members, she said, but by the end of the day, dozens had signed membership cards to join.
Small Successes, Gradual Movement
Organized labor is not a panacea, union officials admit. Their members have faced PPE shortages and high infection rates throughout the pandemic, too. But collective action can help workers push for and achieve change, they said.
National Nurses United and the National Union of Healthcare Workers said they’ve each seen an influx in calls from nonmembers, but whether that results in more union elections is yet to be seen.
David Zonderman, an expert in labor history at North Carolina State University, said safety concerns like factory fires and mine collapses have often galvanized collective action in the past, as workers felt their lives were endangered. But labor laws can make it difficult to organize, he said, and many efforts to unionize are unsuccessful.
Health care employers, in particular, are known to launch aggressive and well-funded anti-union campaigns, said Rebecca Givan, a labor studies expert at Rutgers university. Still, workers might be more motivated by what they witnessed during the pandemic, she said.
“An experience like treating patients in this pandemic will change a health care worker forever,” Givan said, “and will have an impact on their willingness to speak out, to go on strike and to unionize if needed.”

Let me date fellas who are typically my “type” and keep my very own thoughts open. I will carry on and live enjoy my excellent life that this man-thing a part of this specific. I will be patient and seriously is not get very focused or possibly obsessed.
You’ve asked yourself queries like: Exactly what / points I need to achieve or not do to set in my opinion up to make good choices? What do I trust others to complete in order for by myself to be happy? So how does15419 I act in order to keep my self confidence and self esteem? What will I really not stand up to in by myself or throughout others?
These types of women all of have one part of common: lots of people lack self-awareness. Months and often years passed without paying focus on their own needs. They in no way considered what they bring to the table and exactly they count on from their spouse. They just simply went together with.
They also remember not to considered exactly what their work was to independently and to the boys they meet.
One of this coaching consumers, Tamara, may be a perfect case in point. She is 56, beautiful, successful and attractively kind. She jumped in a short time into a partnership with a guy who harvested her. He was very controlling. It continuing for 2 many years. With my own, personal coaching aid, she inevitably ended this kind of.
Tamara planned to find a good male and are in love, nevertheless her seek out had gone thin air. To be honest, My partner and i wasn’t stunned: though this lady was very smart plus accomplished, the woman had simply no clarity with regards to herself as well as her anticipation when it came to men.
She got no idea the easiest way to date men or select men at all other than the way in which she’d already been doing it. In excess of had tiny idea what this lady was looking for and in addition she truly had hardly any clue the best way to take care of himself along the way.
But she kept looking, finding a same gentleman and staying a very long time.
While Tamara accomplished Step 2 involving my 6-step Find Wish and Find The particular pup system she had several major improvements (as nearly all women do).
This is how I information women reply the problem: “I’m Fabulous So Sophisticated the Much Problem? ” I help you define detailed standing in the journey, what designs need removing and what it is possible to do to pass over your boundaries.
Then put in force9045 what you comprehend and create your own personal ground rules. Besides here’s the highest part: These kind of aren’t the principles for the dog; they are oneself.
It’s about setting by yourself up for online dating sites success by way of creating a simple foundation that makes certain you get to which you Win! Gift basket with sophistication, dignity along with a good man by your side.

I will be open in terms of myself (within reason) and also my likes and dislikes. I am going to not enable a man as a way to snap at me as well as be judgmental towards by myself without you calling your pet on his habits. Zero later compared to this not withdrawl into typically the shell when he disagrees with what I need to say or even want to do. Simply no later as compared to this no longer match to get coupled. I won’t argue disagreeably while I won’t remain silent generally. I am about to think about whether or not I like him and use that knowledge to decide whether or not I want to locate him all over again. I will obviously not the case focus entirely upon in case he adores me along with turn into insecure regarding the man breaking up any time camping. I want not be afraid of disagreements or experience threatened together with the idea that they won’t much like me easily don’t achieve what he says or perhaps don’t trust him. I will not possible be afraid in case the relationship cannot work out any kind of time stage i actually will feel dispense with to end this if I could feel it has the working for us. Certainly, there you go. Tamara rocked this kind of. These are apparent rules that she has become able to use to guideline her actions, feelings in addition to decisions. You will notice that, ideal?

Google Reveals How They Keep Search Fresh and Relevant
Last updated on July 16, 2019 at 12:03 pm
Public Liaison for Search, Danny Sullivan, recently released an article explaining the process of implementing changes to the Google Algorithms. Providing an in-depth overview of how changes reflect in search gives us a further understanding of how these updates roll out for every query.
Moreover, it pretty much sums up how Google works as an informational vessel for users as Sullivan extends his article to a deeper analysis of SERP features like the knowledge graph, featured snippets, and predictive features.
“Our search algorithms are processed with complex math equations that rely on numerous variables, and last year alone, we made more than 3,200 changes to our search systems,” according to Danny Sullivan. The regular updates that the search engine uses in order to display relevant and useful results on the web are done with utmost and precise evaluation.
For SEOs, it is important to work with Google and not against them. I believe that the most useful white-hat tactic for SEO is following the search engine’s guidelines on their processes and algorithms. This is a great look into their process of displaying the search results and how they deal with potential issues that come with the SERP features. How does Google keep the search useful and relevant? See more of it below:
Utilizing Unique Formats
People can be visual in nature which is why it proves to be very helpful for them if they come across a search engine result in the form of featured snippets. As you may well know, featured snippets, or also popularly known as “Rank Zero”, determines that a particular web page passes Google’s standard both in quality and credibility. Appearing as a featured snippet is a signal of a strong web page that is most likely to be displayed in that unique format if it has undergone the best SEO.
Danny Sullivan reiterates that they prohibit snippets that are in potential danger of violating their policies like harmful, violent, hateful, sexually explicit or content that lacks an expert authority regarding public interest topics.
They did not mention a particular implementation which puts a page in the position of Rank Zero, but they did say that the removal of a featured snippet is only possible if it violates policies. So it is safe to say that as long as your content is relevant enough to serve the general public, then you are good to go.
Providing Factual and Relevant Information
Google Search aims to reflect the facts that people readily search for on the web. No matter who, what, or where, the whole purpose of their algorithmic implementations is to provide answers that will sustain the queries that users input every day. The Knowledge Graph is their way to automatically connect the attributes of this information to structured databases, licenses data, and other informational sources.
Changes to the Knowledge Graph are rare since it is utilized to display results that are factual and properly presented as well. One of the processes that Sullivan explains in his article is the usage of manual verification and user feedback. Updating information in the event of an error is done manually especially if their systems have not self-corrected it.
Knowledge graphs can look as simple as this:
Or it can be displayed as a full-blown knowledge panel with a collection of the most viable answers to your query:
Google also gives people and organizations the freedom to edit their knowledge panels as they see fit. This process ensures that content authority is maintained and to pursue accuracy in representing people, places, things, or services. Additionally, Google has tools and developments that are specifically dedicated to fixing errors in Knowledge Graphs and other SERP features as well.
Maintaining A Personal Approach to Search
Predictive texts are everywhere and it is the closest and most basic form of AI that we can encounter in the digital world. Simply put, the predictive features help users navigate searches more quickly. Common searches help expand the topic scope, which will prove to be very useful for user experience and search for information. The section in the search labeled “People also search for,” will help users navigate to other topics that are related to what they are looking for in the first place.
Google maintains the freshness of the predictive feature by ensuring that the related searches would not have a negative impact on groups and this is also applied to results which can be offensive to the users. Possible predictions that are not included in this feature can be policy-violating content, either because it is reported and found to violate the policy or the system detected it as such.
Ranking Content by Relevance and Authority
SERP features are great but you cannot deny that the most coveted spot in the search results pages is the organic result. Although the features are helpful enough, organic listings are what keeps people hooked into the search engine. The “blue links” are the lifeblood of search engines, businesses, and SEO organizations.
Ranking the results is an automated process, it sifts through a hundred billion pages that Google has indexed while crawling the web and it is arranged according to the relevance from the keywords you use.
Although Google’s ranking factors can be pretty vague, this recently published article made one thing clear: they do not manually remove or re-order organic results from the search engine page. The search engine does not manually intervene on a particular search query in order to “address ranking challenges”.
This is a bold statement considering that there are many people coming for Google who they think have a certain bias in the domains it ranks for the organic listings.
Eliminating Spam in Search
Spam protections are vital, especially if the content fails to meet Google’s long-standing webmaster guidelines. This is not limited to spam only since it can also cover violations that deal with malware and dangerous sites. The search engine’s spam protection systems are automated to prevent these types of content from being included in the ranking system. This is also applicable to links who are too spammy for their own good.
If those SEOs who think that using black-hat tactics are working in their favor, they would have to think again because Google sees these types. Manual actions are in order if the automated system fails to detect these dangerous content. It is also stated that this is not targeted to a particular search result or query, rather it is applicable to all general content that users can find in the SERPs.
Adherence to Legal Policies
The search pages are meant to disseminate information and to provide an avenue of safe browsing for everyone. Unfortunately, broad access to information also means that these content are vulnerable unsafe attacks like child abuse imagery and copyright infringement claims. These cases violate Google’s purpose of being a melting pot of information since it intervenes with people’s protection against these sensitive content.
Google’s legal compliance and application is their public commitment to keep people safe in order to help them strive to make search results and features useful to everyone.
Key Takeaway
Google’s transparency in the way their processes go about it is a win for SEOs. This will help us come up with ethical strategies with this type of information to keep in mind. Optimizing sites is not meant to be an overnight job. There is hard work behind strategies, applications, and research which means that there is no such thing as an outrage claim that your site can rank in just 24 hours.
Same with Google, they work hard to devise these features and to monitor the search engine pages to the best of their abilities. Rather than making an enemy out of Google, why not be its ally in providing users with the most relevant content and best experience? Read the full article here.

Inside the cutthroat combination of plastic surgery and social media
In South Florida, an area known for its high volume of successful and botched plastic surgeries, social media has brought a whole new level of craziness to the industry.
Plastic surgeons are blogging, posting on Instagram and creating stories for Snapchat that often show real patients undergoing procedures in real time. These South Florida surgeons — who practice under a variety of titles — are exposing each other’s mistakes, battling negative patient reviews, swiping each other’s before and after photos and pushing the line between appropriate and vulgar.
“We live in the wild west when comes to aesthetics and treatments,” said Dr. Adam Rubinstein, an Aventura plastic surgeon. “It’s hard for people who are not in the business to make sense of it.”
When it comes to plastic surgery, social media use is at an all-time high, with photos of pouty lips, big butts and flat tummies dominating Instagram posts. About 70 percent of board-certified surgeons maintain an active professional social media account, according to an 2018 survey of members of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. While doctors are building followings and luring patients, some also are fending off lawsuits and navigating the thorny digital frontier between promotion and misuse.
At the same time, people who are considering cosmetic procedures and those who have undergone them — often referred to as dolls — have their own private Facebook groups and Instagram accounts where they are asking questions, sharing photos, comparing prices and documenting their journeys — the good, the bad and the ugly.
“You can look at a pretty pictures on social media all day, but you don’t know what went someone went through,” said Teresa Jones, a mother of four who has spent six months on social media researching plastic surgery in Florida and belongs to four of the private Facebook groups. “You learn that sometimes, it takes two or three rounds of surgery to fix what happened the first time,”
While patients talk among themselves, plastic surgeons, cosmetic surgeons, dermatologists and a variety of practitioners are using social media as the new yellow pages to promote their practices. They quickly find photos and online reviews have even greater mileage than the old-fashioned word of mouth. Rubinstein, an Aventura plastic surgeon, runs an Instagram account called @PlasticSurgeryTruths with nearly 33,000 followers where he answers questions such as how to get rid of dark spots and how to know if your skin is good for liposuction. Along with that account, Rubinstein is an active blogger and about to launch a YouTube channel where he will go behind the scenes to explain the materials used in plastic surgery procedures.
Rubinstein said he participates actively on social media “to educate the public and keep things transparent.” He also uses social media to expose what he claims are bad practices in the profession and the people involved in them. He runs an Instagram series titled “Exposed,” that highlights “self-proclaimed” cosmetic surgeons or clinics who have a plethora of medical malpractice lawsuits against them.
“There’s so much deception going on in social media and people who are putting themselves out there as plastic surgeons who are not,” he said.
Another South Florida surgeon using social media to promote his work has learned that doing so can have consequences. Dr. Christopher Salgado, section chief of UHealth’s LGBTQ Center for Wellness, Gender and Sexual Health, is no longer employed by the University of Miami Health System. Salgado ran into trouble earlier this month with posts on his Instagram account called @sexsurgeon, which is no longer active. Transgender advocates complained to the university about the Instagram account’s graphic photos of gender reassignment surgery and crude hashtags, including a Valentine’s Day post with a photo of a penis of a transgender patient shaped in a heart with the comment, “There are many ways to show your LOVE,” as reported by The Miami Herald. Salgado, who gained recognition when he consulted with TLC star Jazz Jennings on her gender confirmation surgery on an episode of “I Am Jazz,” has since apologized in an email to the newspaper. Jazz is a South Florida transgender woman who has publicly documented her journey on television and YouTube.
Yet, even while social media has become treacherous, South Florida plastic surgeons say it’s necessary to doing business. Plastic surgery-related hashtags have risen dramatically, appearing in nearly 1.8 million posts on Instagram, most of them promotional rather than educational, according to a January 2017 analysis published in the Aesthetics Surgery Journal. At the same time, the number of cosmetic and plastic surgery procedures has boomed. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons found more than a quarter-million more cosmetic procedures were performed in 2018 than the previous year.
Along with photo posts, South Florida surgeons are getting increasingly promotional on social — performing live operations on Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, YouTube and reality television shows, boosting the area’s image as one of the top places in the country for new boobs and the popular Brazilian Butt Lift.
“We’re in the age of consumerism,” said Jeffrey Welch, CEO of Florida Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale. “If you are going to have something done, you want to go to best and you’re going to look at pictures.”
Knowing this, Welch said doctors need to recognize the ethical issues that could arise, such as infringing on patient privacy and misrepresentation of results or credentials. “You have to be careful and cognizant of what you are posting,” Welch said. “At the hospital, we have our own corporate guidelines.”
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons also has a code of ethics that addresses the use of social media with guidelines for its board-certified members.
Miami plastic surgeon Carlos Wolf said he was one of the first in South Florida to use social networking tools to bring patients' families and the general public into operating rooms with real-time updates and videos.
“It is an important means of marketing for the practice,” he said.
Fatima Coco of Fort Lauderdale said Wolf’s live surgical procedures have her considering a nose job.
“Watching him do surgery gives me confidence that he knows what he is doing,” she said.
Likewise, Ramona Melo of Miami found Wolf’s practice by browsing Instagram while looking for photos and information on the eyelid surgery she wanted. Melo said she saw hundreds of before-and-after photos on numerous social media sites, read lots of online reviews, and spent two years trying to figure out which were real.
“This was a big life decision and I was struggling,” she said. After a couple of in-person consultations with Wolf, Melo said she had the surgery and is “super happy.” Now, she’s back on social media, browsing photos of her next possible surgery — a tummy tuck.
For all the upside of social media as a marketing tool, Wolf also has seen “the dark side” of the digital frontier. Pretending to be Wolf, an imposter create a social account with Wolf’s photo and his patients’ before-and-after photos. The person behind the account tried to dupe online shoppers, doling out advice and asking for an upfront consultation fee. Wolf said many people are overly trusting of what they see online.“The problem is with social media you could make yourself be looked at as an expert, as an unbelievable surgeon, and be a worthless piece of s***,” Wolf said. “Some people put exaggerated stuff on the Internet … extreme makeovers that calls attention to them. It’s very unsafe, but gets them out there where they can get ‘likes’ and attention.”
The situation could get better though.
Florida Sen. Anitere Flores, R-Miami, has proposed a bill aimed at taming the unruly cosmetic procedures by requiring that anyone who operates a surgery center register with the Department of Health. Meanwhile, prospective patients like Jones are doing online research to protect themselves by learning whether their surgeons are board certified and hearing about patients firsthand experiences in Facebook groups. “You read about things like double infections and multiple blood transfusions and horrible scars and it makes you want to be extra careful,” she said. After researching online for six months, Jones put a $500 deposit down for a tummy tuck with the only plastic surgeon at a Miami clinic who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. But the doctor she chose for the surgery passed away and Jones is now fighting to get her deposit back. “There have been too many deaths and infections, which is why I would only use a surgeon who is board certified,” she said.
Rubinstein believes plastic surgeons themselves need to protect the uninformed public.
“We are stewards of our own profession,” said Rubinstein. “When people take a weekend course and open an Instagram account and call themselves cosmetic surgeons and the public can’t tell the difference, the industry needs a few sheriffs and I don't mind standing up, even if I do suffer a few slings and arrows for it.”

Jacqueline Hart, The Censor Holding The Purse Strings
While the name “Sargon of Akkad” sounded vaguely familiar, I had no clue who he was or what he did. That was probably for the best. But who cares if he’s not someone I would care to know about? Others did and, even if they didn’t, he still has as much right to express his views as I do. But not on Patreon, apparently.
On Dec. 6, Patreon kicked the anti-feminist polemic Carl Benjamin, who works under the name Sargon of Akkad, off its site for using racist language on YouTube. That same week, it removed the right-wing provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos a day after he opened an account.
Whether there’s a connection between Milo, with whom I’m more familiar, and Sargon is unclear. Perhaps they appeal to the same crowd. Perhaps the inclusion of both in the same paragraph in the New York Times is meant to taint Benjamin with Milo’s provocations, not to mention affinity for children. But Sargon’s “deplatforming” produced a reaction.
The moves prompted a revolt. Mr. Harris, citing worries about censorship, announced that he would leave Patreon. He was joined in protest by about half a dozen other prominent members of the site, including the conservative-leaning psychologist Jordan Peterson and the libertarian podcaster Dave Rubin, who also earn money from Patreon.
But this isn’t merely a matter of soapbox size, but money. Patreon is in the business of skimming 5% off the top. The “creators,” as they call them, are making the other 95%. This wasn’t merely a means to express ideas, but to monetize them. So when the plug got pulled, so too did the money.
Jaqueline [sic] Hart, Patreon’s head of trust and safety, said her team watches for and will investigate complaints about any content posted on Patreon and on other sites like YouTube and Facebook that violates what it defines as hate speech. That includes “serious attacks, or even negative generalizations, of people based on their race [and] sexual orientation,” she has said.
Jacqueline Hart is in an enviable position compared to most people who call for the eradication of hate speech on the internet. Not only does she get to decide what’s allowed, but she gets to deprive those she decides are undeserving of their income. And as Patreon is a business, a private entity, and there is no regulatory protection for discrimination based on viewpoint or nasty language, she is the final word.
Sargon’s situation was particularly curious, as the complaint Hart received wasn’t about something he did on Patreon, but on someone else’s Youtube channel. But since she makes up the rules, she gets to connect the dots any way she wants.
If someone has breached Patreon’s policy, the company contacts the offender with a specific plan, which usually involves asking for the content to be removed and for a public apology.
Patreon’s policy, such as it is, offers little guidance.
Hate speech includes serious attacks, or even negative generalizations, of people based on their race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sex, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability or serious medical conditions.
The non-sequitur, “serious attacks, or even negative generalizations,” seems to float right by.
This list is not exhaustive, but we want to be transparent about how we work in the grey areas between speech and action. There can be a fine line between political comments and hate speech.
If by transparency, they mean “we’re just gonna make it up as we go along,” then this is about as transparent as it gets. And because you have no First Amendment right on Patreon, they can do that. But why would they want to?
We understand some people don’t believe in the concept of hate speech and don’t agree with Patreon removing creators on the grounds of violating our Community Guidelines for using hate speech. We have a different view. Patreon does not and will not condone hate speech in any of its forms. We stand by our policies against hate speech. We believe it’s essential for Patreon to have strong policies against hate speech to build a safe community for our creators and their patrons.
Since Patreon is merely a platform, and is no more responsible for “condoning” hate speech than Chevrolet condone’s theft by building the bank robber’s getaway car, this makes little sense. No one sees a “creators” content unless they pay to do so, so there is nothing “unsafe,” assuming you accept the premise that unsafe means seeing words that make your eyes bleed, for the “community,” even though there’s nothing about Patreon that involves a community.
But since Patreon isn’t a social justice charity, but a business that survives on the money generated by its “creators,” closing down profit centers seems counterproductive. There had to be more.
Our mission is to fund the creative class. In order to accomplish that mission we have to build a community of creators that are comfortable sharing a platform, and if we allow certain types of speech that some people would call free speech, then only creators that use patreon that don’t mind their branding associated with that kind of speech would be those who use patreon and we fail at our mission.
The fear, apparently, is that one group of “creators,” the “woke” group, won’t want to share a platform with another group, the “unwokes.” So it’s either Sargon or the happysphere, and Hart, on behalf of her employer, has chosen the latter. While that makes some business sense, the complaints don’t appear to be coming from other, more valuable, creators.
But secondly as a membership platform, payment processing is one of the core value propositions that we have. Payment processing depends on our ability to use the global payment network, and they have rules for what they will process.
Credit cards, Paypal, are the lifeblood of online business. If you can’t move money, you have no business. And between the abuse of regulatory power, such as Andy Cuomo’s “choke point” of the NRA, and demands of the mob that Mastercard not support people with evil ideas, the business of Patreon is at risk from forces beyond its control.
[Dave] Rubin, the libertarian podcaster, tweeted, “The Platform War has begun.”
Is there a platform war? Trying to create an alternate platform, particularly under these circumstances, is about as likely to be successful as Gab relative to Twitter. But even if someone managed to pull it off, it would still be captive to the payment network’s accommodation.
On Patreon, Jacqueline Hart appears to be the censor holding the purse strings, but this is just another business decision. Hart may be spewing the empty rhetoric, but she’s not really in charge.
