The way Danny Boyle and John Hodge wrote out mark rentons brothers from the film will always be unforgivable to me!! His relationship to his brothers defines his character arc. From the way he first became alienated from his community witnessing the abuse/bullying his handicapped younger sibling went through. Then the internal reckoning of his brothers death, the guilt at abandoning him and the relief which that death brought to him.. this death literally coinciding to the month with the original onset of his heroin use. Then later on in the narrative mark dealing with the intense hatred he feels for his elder brother and then that brother also dying, which is what triggers his relapse…….
