Leave A Light On — AU Series Chapter 1
Song: Leave a Light On by Tom Walker/ Home by Matt Gresham
Word Count: 1,923
Summary: The Avengers are left shattered after the loss of Clint and Tony while fighting to save the world from Thanos. After going their separate ways to grieve, Steve and Natasha find their way back to each other, in need of a friend and a place to call home.
Pairing: Steve Rogers x Natasha Romanoff
Warnings: language, fluff, angst, death mention, grief, eventual friends to lovers, eventual OC inclusion (not sure if that needs a warning but I don’t really wanna get complaints 😂).
Please like and reblog (I love that shit)! Click here to fill out the form to be added to my tag list!
Divider is made by me. Please ask permission before using it.
Next Chapter: Chapter 2
Note: This is the first part in my series called “Leave a Light On” (originally posted on Instagram) that initially focuses primarily on Steve and Natasha but eventually branches out to a few other main characters like Bucky Barnes as well as OC characters as new program recruits. If that’s not your cup of tea, that’s perfectly fine, I just thought I’d share and see if anyone likes it. Let me know if you want to be added to my tag list!

The wet roads reflected the bright headlights of Steve’s car as he sped down the highway late at night on his way to Natasha’s. Months had passed since their mission to gather the infinity stones and their last stand against Thanos and his army. Months since Clint gave his life in exchange for the soul stone and Tony sacrificed himself to end the battle. After Tony’s funeral, Steve had returned the stones to their rightful places and went back to get his dance with Peggy; but, he decided that his place was still with his family in the present.
He still wondered how life went for her and her husband, but he could rest easy knowing they got their closure and she had a happy life. Despite the urges he had to stay and beget his chance at a life with her, he knew he had people who needed him. Bucky, who he had fought so hard to get back and was still coping with what Hydrahad done. Sam, who had been thrown into this world of superheroes and villains. Wanda, as she came to terms with losing Vision. Thor, who was clearly still struggling with all he had lost. Morgan and Pepper, as they adjusted to a life without Tony. Natasha, as she grieved the loss of her best friend and attempted to help Laura rebuild her life without Clint. He knew that his work was far from over.
Steve pulled into one of the open parking spots outside Natasha’s apartment building and quickly pulled his hood up over his head before he stepped out into the downpour of rain. A chill ran through him as the cool water and late night air worked its way into his bones.
It had been a couple of weeks since he last visited the assassin's apartment, a desperate attempt to give her some of the space she demanded so she wouldn’t push him further away. Natasha had gone into a reclusive state after Clint died during their mission. Some believed it was simply survivor’s guilt; but Steve knew that feeling all too well. The nightmares of a dear friend plummeting to their death hit too close to home.
He let his eyes close for a moment as the look on Natasha’s face after the realization set in flashed before his eyes. The tears that ran down her cheeks in that moment as she announced to the team the price that had just been paid stung as coldly as the rain that soaked his sweatshirt did now. Eyes that pleaded for this to be just another bad dream in a string of nightmares.
"In order to take the stone, you must lose that which you love. An everlasting exchange. A soul, for a soul."
The soldier urged himself forward and into the dimly lit hallway of Natasha’s building, he scanned the doors that still had numbers nailed to them to find the one that housed his friend for the past few months. The apartments all looked run down, even a bit ominous in the dark. It all nearly reminded him of the shady alleyways he always managed to get into fights in. Eventually, Steve found his way to Natasha’s apartment and he let out a deep breath before lowering his hood and knocking firmly on her door. After a few moments had passed with no response, he knocked a bit harder, concern etched itself onto his already serious features.
Had he left her to grieve alone for too long? Not long enough? This was uncharted territory for him and he truly wished he could ask Barton for advice in this moment; but that was the problem. He was dead and Natasha felt alone in the world again.
A breath he didn’t realize he was holding in was finally released as he heard the deadbolt to her door click open. Knowing she was most definitely armed, he relaxed his expression and body to show the woman that he was here as a friend. The moment he laid his eyes on her he saw how deeply she had been feeling the loss. Her hair was styled into the braid she had become accustomed to in recent years but it was clear it was braided days ago. Tired eyes recognized him as no threat and she lowered her weapon with a heavy sigh.
“What are you doing here, Steve?” she questioned, her jaw was set firmly to attempt her trademark ‘emotionless’ expression.
Steve saw right through her cover and offered her a small smile, “I didn’t want you to be alone. It’s time to come home, Nat.” The tone of his voice was full of emotion despite his intention of remaining calm. The fact was, he was worried for her. Grieving was hard enough with support but she felt it was her demon to fight alone.
“The compound was destroyed in the explosion, I’m fine right where I am,” she looked away as she blinked back tears, waiting a moment before facing him again.
He shook his head incredulously, “Really, Nat? Because you certainly don’t look fine and you haven’t been answering my calls for days. We had a deal, you know. I would give you the space you wanted if you promised to keep in contact so I knew you were okay.” His voice trailed off at the end, clearing his throat before he spoke again, “you scared the shit out of me. Pack your bags, you’re coming with me. It isn’t up for debate anymore.”
“The hell I am,” Natasha scoffed, moving to close the door on him but his hand moved out to stop it. In one fluid movement, Steve slipped through her doorway and into her nearly bare apartment. Apart from a few pieces of essential furniture the only decode was the weapons that had been strewn across the room. Had roles been reversed, she likely would’ve made a comment about how pathetic the place looked. Instead, Natasha sent a harsh glare to the back of his head, “please, just leave, Steve. I’m sorry that I worried you but you need to respect that this is what I want.”
“Is this what Barton would’ve wanted for you?”
“Don’t,” she snapped, “don’t you dare use him against me, Rogers.”
Steve turned to face her again as he stood in the center of her living room, if it could even be considered that. “He was your best friend. That’s exactly how I know he’d kick your ass if he saw what you were doing to yourself. He’d probably kick mine, too, for letting you get away with it for this long, despite my better judgment.” He waited a few moments before speaking again, gathering his thoughts as everything that had occurred in the past years swirled in his mind like a whirlwind of emotions. “Since we met, you’ve had my back. You went out of your way to help me when I lost Peggy and you put yourself at risk to protect Bucky and I, even when we weren’t on the same side. You were always there. Please, Natasha, let me be there for you now because I’m not going to give you an alternative option this time. So you can punch me and scream, if you really want to. You can try to push me away again but I will still be here, for as long as it takes.”
Nat’s resolve started to crumble as she continued to hold back the wave of tears that threatened to spill. She spoke again, this time in a near whisper that pleaded for Steve to listen before her emotions took over, “please…”.
“No,” he stated again, his features softening as he saw his words were getting through to her, “I’m not going out that door until you’re walking out with me and a duffle bag.”
“Can I be in the duffle bag?” she attempted to joke with a sad smile, the tears finally spilling down her flushed cheeks. “He’s really gone, isn’t he?”
Steve cleared his throat and stepped closer before he pulled her into a hug. “He is, yes. But you’re still very much alive and what you’re doing here, it isn’t healthy. You should be with family.” He held her as she finally broke down for the first time in weeks and allowed her grief to flood out. Steve only held her tighter and tucked her head under his chin as she gripped the drenched fabric of his sweatshirt, his eyes clenched shut as they stood together in her apartment. They stayed like that until she stopped shaking and cried all she had to give. He pulled back enough to tuck a loose strand of hair that escaped her braid back behind her ear and looked her in the eyes repeating what he had said when he first arrived, “It’s time to come home, Nat.”
A moment later, Natasha nodded in agreement and the two pulled apart to start gathering the few belongings she cared to take with her. They packed everything she decided to take into a small bag that Steve slung over his shoulder and motioned for her to head for the front door. They made their way out into the parking lot of her complex, sure steps splashed lightly in the puddles left from the rain that had long since concluded. Steve placed her bag in the backseat before entering the driver’s side and starting the engine once she was buckled in.
He wasted no time before pulling out of the parking lot and onto the main road that would take them to the site of their new compound he had been working on since Tony’s funeral and the stones were back in their rightful place. He hadn’t told Natasha of his plans during all that time, not wanting to place any more stress on his friend’s shoulders than what she already had. The pair drove in near silence the whole way, only breaking it to ask the occasional question about what had been going on in the other’s life.
Tumblr media
When Steve pulled into the long driveway of the compound, Natasha was visibly confused as her eyebrows furrowed together. “Where are you taking me, Rogers? I know I’ve been a pain in your ass, but taking me out to the middle of nowhere to kill me is a bit much.”
The soldier rolled his eyes and looked over at her as they pulled up to a large complex, still partly under construction, with only the internal lights shining through the windows to separate the building from the night sky behind it. “I already told you, I’m taking you home. It’s still a work in progress, but it’s a start,” he explained, a light smile on his lips. He watched as Natasha admired the structure and how he had taken pieces of architecture from the original compound and included it in the new design. “We can’t begin to replace those we’ve lost, no one can replace Tony and Clint. But, we can work to build a new team that will step up after we’re no longer able to do this job, the next generation of Avengers. I understand if you don’t feel like you’re in the place to be involved with the program but the doors will always be open to you regardless. Welcome to the Avengers Initiative Program.”
She tore her eyes away from the compound to look over at him, only illuminated by the lights on the dash. “It’s perfect, Steve. It’s home.”

-- Event #2,
“Shitty day for a funeral,” Red Johnson remarks to his eldest daughter, looking out onto the glistening grass of the empty field across from Wade United Methodist Church. Church services for Josie have just ended. It’s been raining most of the morning; the clouds have cleared for now, but the sky remains an ominous shade of grey, like any second the clouds could part, and a flood would come down from the heavens. Part of Red wishes it would; to him, it would be apropos.
Of course, any day is a shitty day to bury your wife of forty-something years. Red can’t exactly remember how many years they were married; Josie was the memory between the two of them. Now, he’s got to remember things for himself… He’s lucky she’d been so meticulous about writing names, phone numbers, and addresses in her tiny little blue book, or he’d have had to put up posters to invite people to this goddamn travesty of an event. Part of him is still hoping no one will come. Then again, he knows very well Josie was well-adored in the town, and the majority of its residents will probably stop through to offer their condolences. Shouldn’t that be comforting? Maybe if she’d died of natural causes, but not with a murderer on the loose.
Next stop is Kane Funeral home. A bright white colonial with black shutters, and a red door. It’s picturesque, too well kept to be natural. It’s almost sad that some little family doesn’t call it home. No, it’s just another stop on the road of the dead-- the last one before they meet their final resting place. Josie’s body has sat, rotting as slowly as science can ensure, at the Allen County Coroner office for the last month after an extensive series of testing, podding, and poking. Every couple days they’d move her body from cold storage to the sterile, stainless steel examination table, and take another stab (quite literally) at figuring out exactly what happened to her. They’ve come up mostly empty-handed. At this point, no more information can come from Josie’s corpse, and if they do need it again, they can always exhume it. The Johnson family needs to lay her to rest.
It’s an open-casket event; after all, Josie’s body was in nearly perfect condition when it was found, save for the gash that was hiding on the back of her head. Her body has been dressed, her most precious jewelry put on, and healthy smattering of the strongest makeup known to man has been applied with a delicate hand. When the mortician left her, she looked peaceful. Hands crossed, eyes closed firmly… as if she was just sleeping. And she is sleeping. Eternally.
The casket is rolled carefully into the viewing room, and the flowers are arranged ahead of time. Josie’s body is left alone in the room for exactly forty-six minutes before the guests even begin to file in to say their final goodbyes to her.
Naturally, Red, and his two daughters are the first to enter the viewing room. People have already begun showing up, gathering in the lobby of the funeral home, and preparing themselves for a whirlwind of emotion.
No one expected this, though.
Red, tears already pouring down his face (so much for a stiff upper lip), makes his way to the casket, truly prepared to see his wife for the last time. But when he reaches his final destination, all he sees is white silk. An empty casket.
Shock sets in, and shock for Red Johnson means silence. He stumbles back slightly, towards his daughters, who are confused, immediately asking questions, almost afraid to go look for themselves. Red can only point to the casket, wondering if there’s been some type of mistake. They’re there at the right time, right? This is the right room, right? Where is she?
His eldest daughter musters up the courage to peek into the casket, and just as quickly as she's heading straight to find someone who can help them. Josie’s disappearing act part three. Jesus Christ. She pushes her way through the townspeople waiting in the lobby to get to the back office. Fred Kane, third generation funeral home director has seen some shit, but this? This is unbelievable. He’d been in that room exactly… fifty minutes ago now, and the body was just lying there just as it should have been.
“Is this some kind of sick joke, Kane?” Red has moved past shock, and has gone straight into anger… as per usual. But wouldn’t you be angry, too? How could something like this happen? Was it negligence? A cruel prank? Something else?
There is no surveillance equipment in the funeral home. Can you imagine if there were? Cameras in every room watching people grieve? That’s a sick joke in itself. There’s no way to know exactly where Josie’s body has gone. Kane doesn’t have any answers. The mortician (only a woman of thirty years, or so) doesn’t have any answers.
As per usual in Wade NO ONE has any answers. The waiting room just steps outside of the viewing room is slowly filling up with mourning Wadians, almost to the point where there’s no breathing room for anyone. Fred Kane has to come out of his office, and urge people to please wait outside on the lawn for the time being while last minute details are worked out.
Everyone can sense there’s something strange going on, even for Wade.
You, like everyone else, are now standing on the sprawling lawn of the Kane funeral home wondering what the hell is going on, and when you’re going to be able to go in, and say goodbye to Josie.
After about twenty minutes of chatter, Fred Kane is standing in the doorway of the funeral home, practically just a shadow. He speaks from his perch, “Everyone should go home.”
Leave it to Josie to have a fucked up funeral.
Event Prompts:
WE WANT ANSWERS: Characters may consider trying to enter into the funeral home to figure out what’s going on (perhaps once it’s gotten dark). As stated previously, the Kane Funeral Home is a converted home; there are other entrances/windows towards the back of the house that may be accessed. There’s no guarantee any characters will discover anything but it’s the hunt that counts! Just try not to get caught by any workers, or members of the Kane family.
The main blog may be able to interfere with threads of this nature. If you receive a message from the main blog regarding your thread, you will have to cease what you were doing, and abide by the main blog’s instructions.
This could include: simply being kicked out by the Kane family, the Wade Police Department becoming involved, allowing your characters to uncover a clue, etc.
Threads may continue after moderator intervention, but must keep in line with what the moderator has determined to happen.
No real punishment/harm will come to your character without your consent. This is just a fun way to make the game a little more interactive.
DRINKING OUR SORROWS AWAY: Some townspeople will choose wisely, and leave the Kane Funeral Home with their unanswered questions in tow. A good option for those still wearing black is to drown their sorrows at the Conifer Lounge. It’s Karaoke Saturday, and given the circumstances Fucking Hipster Bullshit has elected to begin the festivities early. Dollar drafts are also a thing. So go get drunk. Sing one for Josie.
MEET ME AT THE PARK: Other Wadians may ban together, and move their conversation over to the Wade Recreation Center. Even though it’s likely raining again (not to mention that it’s probably getting dark), some suspicious individuals may elect to converse about all of the oddities that have been taking place in Wade as of late at the park. Rumors of the Mayor’s Letter may spread during conversations that take place here. Henry Gregory may also be brought up. Citizens are encouraged to start thinking deeper. Sure, there’s a dead old lady to worry about, but is there something deeper happening, too?
Characters are not limited to these three prompts, and may do whatever they’d like in the advent of Josie’s funeral being cancelled (postponed?), these are simply suggestions to get the ball rolling.
Have fun, attempt to interact with those you have not, and happy writing! Threads for this event may commence immediately, and should be wrapped up in about five days (04/30).
Other threads should continue as normal, and all interactions do not need to revolve around the event at all!

Task #1: Biography
Tumblr media
full name: Juda Nassar
age: Twenty-Three
birthday: September 11th
occupation: Museum research assistant
label: The Valedictorian
Trigger Warning: Drug misuse
Being the new kid can always be hard. Being the new kid halfway through sixth grade is and was even harder. Juda grew up in Western Vancouver but when his father had the opportunity to become the medical director at the Ashland Hospital, Juda and his family packed their things and moved to the US. He entered middle school in the spring semester. All of the new middle school friend groups had been established and everyone, especially Juda, was insecure. Without any pre-established friends Juda kept a low profile. He ate lunch in his history teacher’s classroom and used excessive school work as an excuse for spending weekends at home. While is parents were concerned they couldn’t complain. Juda’s grades were amazing and at every parent teacher conference the teachers would rave about how polite, intelligent and empathetic he was. While his parents did apply some academic pressure on him, Juda’s passion for learning and need to excel was largely internal.
It was his curiosity that ultimately led him to meeting Laurel Polk. They had an art class together in eighth grade. Juda and Laurel had been paired together to make a collage using magazine scraps. They ended up bonding over a only-slightly cut up National Geographics magazine feeding off each other’s love for the world and the cultures that compose it. Juda didn’t expect the friendship to last after that class but come the fall of high school Laurel stuck around. She found him in the hallway and started to introduce him to the other members of The Romantics. He had known of most of them before and knew a decent amount about them; you learn a lot when you listen instead of speaking. While some of these new friends weren’t kids he, or his parents, would expect to hang out with he relished in finally having some friends from this century.
It was also around this time when parties went from backyard birthdays to basement spin the bottle games. It was during a game of truth or dare where someone challenged another person to kiss their crush. Juda watched as two of his friends started to kiss. It made him uncomfortable. Not because it was a sloppy freshman year kiss, although that put him on edge as well but because he desperately hoped he wouldn’t get called out to do the same. Something in his gut was telling him that kissing any of his girl friends there wasn’t what he wanted to do. It was a similar feeling to when he turned down weed from Sonny for the first time that but more instinctual. It wasn’t long after that he realized that he was gay. The realization came somewhere between watching the male gymnasts at the Beijing Olympics and getting tongue tied whenever Keaton Dhami talked to him in their freshman year geometry class. Soon after that he came out to very little surprise from his friends and family. His parents were more than supportive as was his little sister, Tessa. His mom even tried to start a PFLAG group at a PTA meeting which Juda quickly shut down out of parental embarrassment. Normally it would take Juda a much longer time to make such a big transition but he knew at his core he couldn’t sit through another round of anxiety inducing truth or dare or spin the bottle.
Whenever someone comes out during high school it’s going to spread. Juda wasn’t ready for the extra attention. While there was definitely some bad moments, snide remarks in the hallways and weird glances from overcompensating straight dudes, overall some Juda felt safe with himself. The Romantics all had his back and he felt closer to them now that he didn’t make up excuses to not go to parties. He was fortunately not alone either. Ezra Greene had been out since middle school which still blows Juda’s mind seeing how awkward middle school already was for him. Juda and Ezra had gotten close almost immediately when Laurel introduced them. Juda thinks Laurel was trying to set them up even before he officially came out. The two boys were constantly throwing flirtatious jabs at one another and started to hang out a lot that following summer. Juda knew he had feelings for Ezra but was too proud to truly admit it and too nervous to really do anything about it. When Ezra kissed him in the boys bathroom that next school year everything changed. They started dating right away and for a while it was some of Juda’s happiest moments. The relationship ended mutually. Ezra didn’t want the commitment and Juda became hyper focused on college applications and AP classes. They remained extremely close and tended to end the weekend nights back with one another.
The next two years of school were a whirlwind for Juda. He became so focused on his school work and getting into a good college that he never fully enjoyed the Romantics for everything they were. He was friends with everyone but couldn’t devote the time to patrying and after school McDonald’s runs. His hard work all paid off though when he got his acceptance letter to Stanford followed by the announcement that he was going to be the class valedictorian.
The night before graduation, while many people were out celebrating, Juda was putting the final touches on his speech and rehearsing it over with his family in their living room. When he got the news about Laurel everything changed. That next day, he was one of the only Romantics to attend the ceremony. He went out of obligation and only obligation however he only made it through a couple lines before breaking down running off the stage.
Juda doesn’t remember the summer leading up to college. He remembers the funeral and a few small attempts at having the Romantics get together but it went by quickly and before he knew it he was traveling to Stanford. It was a needed change of pace. He could zero in on his studies and isolate his emotions. At school, he took his passion for people and the world and majored in Social and Cultural anthropology. He made a smaller group of friends, mainly other anthropology students, and explored his sexuality more. He had two semi-consistent hookups but the first quickly became an asshole and the other ended when the older guy graduated. He had always wanted to study abroad but feared leaving the little home at school he had just settled into.
Juda’s academic masochism continued at Stanford. He was constantly throwing himself into new projects and locking himself in the library. His backpack was always weighed down by at least two textbooks. During his second year he started to use caffeine pills to stay awake and alert. At first it was only for finals or big projects but come senior year he was taking them regularly for assignments. He kept his frequent usage from his college friends and especially the Romantics he keeps up with. He doesn’t want them to think less of him, an inherent guilt he feels but is too proud to admit. While after college he uses these pills much less he does keep a bottle of them with him for times when he needs a boost.
After graduating he took a job as a research assistant at the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture. One of his professor recommended him for the position knowing a collegue in Seattle. With the professor’s shining reference and Juda’s impressive resume the museum was happy to have him. Juda loves the job. He gets to research and learn about all of the new exhibits that come in and find innovative ways to display that information. It’s his own way of seeing the world. While he loves this job he has begun to consider grad school. His mentor at the museum is encouraging it as Juda has expressed wanting to be a curator himself. However, an old professor has offered him an opportunity to travel to Belize with her for an archeological dig. It would be a year long experience that Juda knows would be incredible. He fears the huge change though. Grad school make sense. It is practical. Belize is out of left field and a huge change.
Juda is taking this road trip as an opportunity to travel and get comfortable being uncomfortable. This will be his first time traveling for a long period of time and the first time he would see a large part of the country outside of books and documentaries. He is optimistic but has of course over-prepared for the worse. What he does know is that he will be happy to reconnect with all his friends.
