temporarily lifting the self-imposed embargo on fic because chief pilot fairbairn keeps running around my head for some reason and won’t leave
London Heathrow Airport, November 2002
Years have passed since Colin last set foot in Heathrow, and it shows when he steps off the jetbridge of the flight that’s acquiesced to carrying Air Caledonian’s Chief Pilot for the short jump south. He has the feeling that the passengers around him are as forgiving as they are because he’s in uniform—a symbol of authority that hasn’t changed much from the days when liner more often referred to a bulking machine cutting swiftly through waves upon a sea rather than air fronts in the sky.
There still aren’t as many passengers streaming around Colin as there used to be, even a year on—but it’s more than at the beginning of this new era, and Colin takes that as a sign of things bouncing back. Corporate, at least, is optimistic—if their decision to accept new hires and strike out into growth says anything. In fact, that’s indirectly the reason Colin’s here today, navigating through the Heathrow complex until he reaches what he’s looking for.
Air England’s crew lounge is as formidable as its reputation and, in Colin’s humble opinion, impersonally clean because of it—little Air Cal’s spot up in Glasgow can’t compete with the design, but at least it feels more homey than sanitized. He steps up to the front desk and quietly informs the employee working it of his intentions; she gets up to show him to his destination. Passing through, they occasionally run into Air England crews leaving or entering their numerous briefing rooms—the gold bars on Colin’s sleeves and the slightly-rumpled state of his jacket cause more than one double-take from the other airline’s pilots, with their impeccably pressed silver-trimmed uniforms.
Finally, he’s shown into the main pilots’ lounge and the employee surreptitiously points out a man with four bars on his sleeves whose shoes are unweathered from doing walk-arounds in distant airports. Colin thanks her and strides across the lounge to meet him.
He looks up from his paper at the sound of Colin’s polite greeting, recognizes him, and smiles courteously—Colin's not on personal terms with Air England's Heathrow chief exactly, but Colin's predecessor had been an old friend of this man, and recommended that he turn to him if he had any questions about the whole Chief Pilot lark. Colin and Alex had run into each other on other occasions, too, but Colin can't deny that an undercurrent of tension runs beneath this specific meeting: he's never had to approach him on an issue like this before.
"Colin, hello," Alex greets pleasantly, rising from his chair and sticking out a hand to shake. "Pleased to see you again. I trust the flight down here was comfortable?"
Colin nods. "The flight went well, Alex. Thank you for arranging it for me."
Alex smiles again. "You're very welcome. I've got a satellite office just down the hall, would you mind if we talked there?" The question isn't a pleasantry; Colin knows that underneath runs the implication, We cannot speak of what you want to talk about in this place. And he understands, and acquiesces.
They leave the lounge and make their way to Alex's office. "I remember you mentioned your daughter had one last checkride last time we met," Alex says conversationally as he unlocks the door. "How'd that go?"
"Passed," Colin replies with a smile, his tone noticeably warmer; how can it not, when the talk turns to his girl? "She's still building hours instructing, like I did before Cal, but I have a feeling she'll be looking to the airlines any day now if things get better."
"Suppose she might consider crossing Hadrian's Wall?" Alex jokes, showing him into the office and turning on the kettle he keeps in the corner.
Colin takes the seat Alex offers him and chuckles. "I don't know what's on her mind."
"Yes, yes," Alex concedes, "better to let her make her mind up on it first. You must be proud she's following you; none of mine did." He chuckles ruefully before sitting across from Colin. "But anyways. You wanted to speak to me about advice concerning a potential hire?"
Colin shakes himself out of it; if someone gets him talking about his Linda, he can't really stop, and he did come all the way down to Heathrow for a specific reason. "Yes. We've done an initial interview and a simulator evaluation for this one pilot already. Great evaluation, far more hours in command than our usual candidates, good CRM, but some things he said in the panel were...we didn't offer the job yet, we needed more information." Alex raises his eyebrows, and Colin clarifies, "He used to be one of yours."
"Ah." Alex's congenial demeanor seems to have vanished; the man now looks a little wary, and gazes askance in silence. Colin doesn't continue, reckoning that the other Chief Pilot needs time to think. Out of sight of Alex, behind the desk, Colin twists his wedding band to keep himself from nervously scratching the edge of his mustache.
"You see, Colin," Alex says slowly after a few seconds, "there's two in particular I'm thinking of, and where we go from here depends on which one came to you."
By now, this case is such a notable one that Colin can't help it; the pilot's name is committed to memory. "His name is Hercules Shipwright."
In front of him, Alex visibly relaxes. "I see. What was the area of concern during the panel interview?"
"He mentioned being released from his position here. We wanted to know whether that was an honest assessment of what occurred."
"Yes."
Colin notices that Alex doesn't elaborate, and presses, "Are you at liberty to discuss the specifics?"
"Not all of them," Alex says, smiling tightly. "But what I can tell you is that he was not terminated per se. It was a recommendation that he took."
"And what can you tell me about the circumstances leading up to...this recommendation?"
"Again," Alex replies, still wearing the tight little smile, "I'm not at liberty to discuss all the specifics."
Colin relents. "I see."
Alex regards him in silence; Colin doesn't think it's a dismissal, and his assessment is proven correct when Alex says, quieter, "Off the record...he may have involved himself in informant work."
In this moment, Colin is deeply grateful he had never considered becoming an Air England pilot: Air Caledonian is small, and friendly, and nothing like Air England, with informants and recommendations and secrecy and...whatever the hell goes on here.
Their uniforms may be impeccable, their reputation glossy and smooth, and their image one of prestige: but Colin is glad that he has Air Caledonian, with its earnest young pilots and crews, with its heart and its smallness and the fact that a pilot from this grand place was released, and decided to find a place at his harbor.
In this moment, Colin knows what he will say, when he gets to meet Hercules Shipwright face-to-face in his homey office on the outskirts of Glasgow Airport; he knows what he will ask, and how the man will leave headquarters when they are finished.
"I see," Colin says to Alex now, and makes to rise. "I must be going now. Thank you for answering my question, and for your hospitality."
Alex startles a little in his seat at the certainty that must have colored Colin's tone. "Oh. Well. You're very welcome, Colin."
Alex walks him back out, past the front desk to the terminals beyond, and arranges for him to take an Air England flight back up to Glasgow; as they stand before the jet bridge, the crew already preparing the aircraft for flight, Alex turns back to Colin.
"You mentioned your daughter might be looking out for the airlines soon," he says, conversationally. "Let me know if she's open to a chat with me."
And that's a possibility: with Linda's skill, with his connections, there's a chance Air England might be a fit for her. He might not have wanted to be caught dead in those silver-trimmed uniforms, but she might...but something, deep inside, tells Colin that Hercules Shipwright left this place behind for a very good reason.
Maybe he'll get it, when he meets him.
"I can't read her mind," Colin replies simply, and Alex chuckles, bids him farewell, and takes his leave.

arcane char reaction to the reader that falls asleep in their lap, pleaseeee
a/n: oh to fall asleep in viktor/jayce's lap... also this request made me think and have i written cuddling headcanons for these characters? i cant remember if i have or not
warnings: none(?)
characters: jinx, vi, caitlyn, ekko, viktor, jayce, silco, vander
Jinx
🕷 Probably wouldn't notice at first, she'd be rambling about something while working on one of her gadgets before checking to see if you're listening only to find you with your eyes closed
🕷 "hey sleepy head, are you listening?"
🕷 She'd probably lift one of your eyelids but would quickly pull away when she realized you were actually asleep
🕷 Jinx might get a little pouty because she was feeling chatty but would let you sleep
🕷 If she has a hand free, she plays with your hair
🕷 If you're still sleeping when she's finished with her stuff, she'll grab a marker and draw little doodles all over you
Vi
🕷 You two would be hanging out on the couch watching tv when she saw you asleep
🕷 She literally becomes stiff as a board because she doesn't want to wake you
🕷 lowkey forgets to breathe
🕷 Eventually Vi slowly relaxes when she's confident enough that she won't wake you up accidentally
🕷 Lowers the volume on the tv and will try and grab a blanket to cover you so you don't get cold
🕷 If there isn't a blanket close enough, she'll slip out of her jacket or sweatshirt and drape it over you
🕷 Honestly I can imagine Vi being very comfy
Caitlyn
🕷 Caitlyn purposely makes you lay in her lap and plays with your hair or caresses your face so you'll fall asleep
🕷 She turns the heat up a little and gets you all snuggled up with blankets while she's reviewing a case
🕷 You soon catch onto the fact that she does it on purpose but it's not like you really care
🕷 There have been a few times where you'll wake up with her asleep with her arms wrapped around you
Ekko
🕷 "... but i was cleaning up shop when i overheard—babe?"
🕷 Ekko always smirks when you fall asleep on his lap mainly because he just finds it very cute
🕷 He likes to take your hand and trace the lines in your palm
🕷 I feel like Ekko's body temperature is naturally just very warm
🕷 Sometimes he'll reposition you if he starts to get uncomfortable but he's a pro at not waking you up
🕷 Shoulder kisses <3
Viktor
🕷 He'll be reading a book, taking a break from work, but once he's ready to get back to it he sees you're asleep
🕷 Might question if you're faking it just so he doesn't leave but he stays put either way
🕷 Viktor will either continue reading or will put the book away and just admire you
🕷 His leg will eventually start to cramp so he'll gently lay you on his chest instead
🕷 "mmgh... viktor?"
🕷 "shh, my любимая, i'm right here" любимая (lyuBEEmaya): darling, love
Jayce
🕷 Jayce can be a little fidgety but if he doesn't have anywhere to be, he'll try to sit as still as possible
🕷 Might go on his phone and scroll through whatever while rubbing your arm
🕷 Depending on how late it is in the day, he might just pick you up and bring you to bed
🕷 If he tries to leave and you grab hold of him, he'll stay
🕷 Will bring you to his chest and just rub your back lulling you back to sleep
🕷 Might quietly tease you about wanting him to stay
🕷 "you must've really missed me today..."
Silco
🕷 It's a rare occasion that Silco actually lets you fall asleep on his lap
🕷 It's usually when he's doing paper work at his desk and you're sitting on his lap
🕷 Whenever he lets you sit on his lap, it usually means he's angry about something so most of the time he doesn't let you leave
🕷 Since he works late nights, you end up falling asleep on him
🕷 Silco would offer you some of his cigar just to see you asleep
🕷 I can't really imagine him caring that much but he'll rub your back occasionally while flipping through papers
🕷 Once he's finished with paper work, he'll wake you up by gently shaking you
🕷 This is only after he gives you a few hickeys
Vander
🕷 Literally how can you not fall asleep on this man? He's so comfortable
🕷 When he sees you asleep, he quietly chuckles to himself before putting you to bed
🕷 He's also a pro at not waking people up just because he's had plenty of nights where he's had to stay up with Powder/Jinx
🕷 Vander will usually put off whatever he has to do for tomorrow so he can stay with you
🕷 Will change you into comfier clothes
🕷 He usually falls asleep shortly after you

Hello there you beautiful creature! May I request a Bakugo x Reader fic in which reader and Kirishima are besties but reader is kinda shy around Bakugo because of her crush on him, and starts acting strange after realizing it? Like, she'll suddenly shut up (which is rare since Kirishima) or go red or just make up an excuse and leave. Bonus points if she's super cuddly with Kirishima and others but not him and creates a jealous Bakugo. Thanks! ✨
There was something weird happening to [Reader]. Kirishima may not be the most observant guy in the world, but he could definitely tell when something was up with his best friend. Usually [Reader] was super hyped about life, she was full of energy, she was cracking jokes, she was laughing and always had her arm wrapped around someone. However, something changed recently. He isn’t sure when the subtle changes in her attitude began, but lately, they’ve escalated from a subtle decrease in volume when she spoke, to just immediately silencing herself regardless of the situation.
For example, yesterday in the classroom [Reader] was in the middle of telling a story to him and Kaminari. The class wasn’t set to start for another 10-15 minutes, everyone around them was having their own conversations, and suddenly at the climax of the story, she sees the door open and she abruptly shut her mouth [she stopped halfway through a word] and faced the board in silence. She sat there, silently, for fifteen minutes. She didn’t acknowledge that anyone else was even alive in the room, she was just focused on the board.  There have been several times where she;s done this, and they all had one thing in common. They all started when Bakugou entered the room.
Kirishima didn’t know what exactly was going on between [Reader] and Bakugou, but he was sure as hell gonna find out. When the final bell rang for the day, he immediately walked over to [Reader]’s desk with a smile, “Hey, let’s walk home together today. There’s somethin’ I wanna talk to you about.”
She nodded and grabbed her stuff and they began their walk, “So, what’s on your mind Eiji?” She said in her usual upbeat voice. This was the way his best friend was supposed to act, not like that silent zombie he’s been seeing.
“I wanna know what’s goin’ on with you and Bakugou. You always seem to get all weird when he comes around. Did he do something to you, has he been bugging you or something, because I’ll totally fig-”
[Reader]’s eyes widen at Kirishima’s accusations and she immediately intervenes, shaking her head and gesturing to further prove her point, “No, no! Eiji, relax it’s nothing like that! Bakugou hasn’t done anything… Or well, maybe I can’t say he hasn’t done anything, but like he hasn’t done anything bad to me personally. It’s just he, uh, well you see I realized some stuff about him and about myself and I have just a lot of feelings and I’m not really sure how to handle them because they’re so ‘Ah!’ and I’m so ughh-”
“[Reader]! You’re rambling. Take a deep breath and just tell me what’s going on with you.” Kirishima said, placing his hands on her shoulders and looking her in the eyes.
“I think I might have feelings for Bakugou... Like, romantic feelings. And I’m not really sure what I should do about it, so I get this like awkward feeling in my stomach and I just can’t even function.”
Kirishima took a moment to really comprehend the information he was given before offering up a solution, “Okay, well if you can’t deal with this whole crush thing, then maybe we need to force Bakugou to do something about it instead? I’ve got a plan.”
Bakugou was irritated. He was normally irritated, but he was extra irritated today. Lately [Reader] has been clinging to Kirishima a whole lot more than usual. He knows he probably shouldn’t care, that it’s not his business, but for a while there he was starting to think she might have been into him. She would always get a little red when he spoke to her, she’d occasionally glance over at him but when he looked at her she’d turn away, she basically gave him all the cliche ‘I like this guy but I’m shy about it’ signals and yet here she was; clinging all over Kirishima.
What the fuck was he supposed to do about all these goddamned mixed signals he was getting? Were you interested in him or that red haired idiot? Was he misinterpreting everything? Were you always this touchy with Eijirou, like even for friends sitting in his lap like that is a bit much.
No, he wasn’t dealing with this shit. He doesn’t need to waste his fucking time wondering if you’re into him or Kirishima or whatever. It was making him lose focus and he couldn’t afford to do that if he was gonna be the number one hero. He needed a straightforward answer, and he needed it now.
Without wasting another moment he was out of his chair and stomping over to Kirishima and [Reader]. “You and I are gonna talk, right now.” He reached over and took her hand, pulling her from Kirishima’s lap, and lead her into the hallway.
“Alright, now you need to tell me right the fuck now what they hell you’re into. Do you like me or am I just wasting my fucking time here with some bullshit unrequited pining. ”
“I’m sorry what? Unrequited pining? Bakugou, are you saying you like me?”
“Obviously. I know you aren’t fucking stupid, so quit acting like it. Now answer me, do you like me or are you dating that shithead Kirishima?”
“I’m not dating Kirishima, and yes, I like you.”
“Good. Meet me after class ends, we’re going on a date. Don’t make me wait too long.”
You watched as Bakugou walked himself back into the classroom and you ran a hand through your hair.
“Jesus christ, I can’t believe the jealousy plan actually worked. I definitely owe Eiji for that one.”
