Shein Summer Haul 2020
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shein is one of my favorite sites to shop on. Yes, I know they have some controversy but what clothing brand doesn’t. I much rather shop online then go into a Brandy Melville store and get judged. Plus the price, you can’t beat it! The styles are always up to date too. Why pay $40 at Brandy Melville when you can get the same style shirt for way cheaper on Shein?! This order I splurged. Which isn’t hard when the deals are so good. I got clothes and misc items for our new apartment. Let’s see what all I got.
Miscellaneous Items
Foot Brush - $13.08
I’m saying it right now I have dancer’s feet. If you don’t know what that means let me explain, image turning so much that you get blisters on the ball of your foot, the floor dries out your heels and toe pads, and floor burns all over your feet from pointe shoes and floor work. My feet need all the attention they can get to look there best outside of the dance studio. I so far am in love with the bristles and the buffer at the end of it. There were no color options when I ordered, so they sent a random color. Blue would have not been my first choice but oh well, I’m still gonna use it.
Three Metal Buckle PU Belts - $6.54
I used to hate belts in high school but now that I’m not a stick figure anymore, they have become my best friend. I wanted to buy a set of belts and this was the perfect set for me! Each one can easily go with any outfit!
40pcs Ditsy Floral Pattern Scrunchies - $9.81
A girl can never have too many scrunchies! These are perfect for my thin hair. I can’t wait to match all the different styles with my outfit on the daily. Now I just need to master some new hairstyles to go with them!
1pc Tassel Wall Decor - $5.45
When I saw this piece I knew it would look great in the bathroom of my new apartment. It was simple, which is just what I wanted. I just wish I got more to design them together on their own wall.
2pcs Plain Metal Bookend - $3.82
Again another item that didn’t have a color choice and sent just a random color, lime green. It will most definitely clash with my color scheme in my room so I might just spray paint them soon to lavender.  As long as they hold all my books in place that’s all that matters, right?
Bow Decor Shower Headband - $6.54
I love this headband! It’s a lifesaver in the mornings. I usually like to air dry my hair after a shower but it constantly gets in my face during my skincare routine. This is a stylish and convenient solution to my problem.
12pcs Simple Plain Scrunchies - $5.45
Have I said I like scrunchies?! I saw this satin set and knew I couldn’t pass it up.
Slogan Graphic Wall Print - $3.27
I love this saying and design. I knew it would look great in the bathroom of my new apartment. I had made some other fashion quotes to go in there also, so it would fit in naturally. It’s the perfect saying to describe my style. I don’t care what others around me think of my outfit choices, I wear what I want to wear because it makes me happy.
1pc Buttocks Workout Resistance Band - $6.54
I have been wanting one of these for a while now. I can’t wait to start using it in my apartment complex’s gym! I got to pick my color on this item, thank goodness! Pink was the goto, it’s a happy color so it should keep me happy while I’m doing a killer workout right?
1pc Iron Grid Wall Hanging Decor - $5.45
I have been saving different office ideas on Pinterest and each one of them has a grid on the wall like this one. I’m going to paint some mini wooden close pens to be able to hang photos and notes.
1 pc Silicone Shampoo Brush - $4.36
I personally hate washing my hair when I have fake nails on, which is 95% of the time. This was a perfect solution to that problem. I love that it came in purple too!
Clothing Items
Allover Graphic Bandeau Bikini Top - $6.54
This swim top is made for laying out, soaking in those summer rays. My new apartment complex has a pool and so many perfect layout chairs. I can’t wait to sit out there in this top with a good book.
Solid Sweatshirt and Tie Front Slant Pocket Sweatpants Set - $29.43
I have been really into pastel colors lately and sets are in style. The inside is so soft but while also being lightweight it will be perfect for winter here in Kentucky.
Tie-Dye Print Round Neck Sweatshirt - $14.17
Now, this I would not have called a “sweatshirt” it’s more of a knit long sleeve shirt. That is exactly what I will be using it as too. It’s a lightweight material and the color combination is so pretty. I’m not sad at all about this purchase.
3 Ribbed Cropped Cami Top - $5.45 each
I bought this style of top in three colors; black, burgundy, and navy. I can’t wait to style these tops with some paper bag style pants or a simple high waisted short. They are extremely soft too!
Tie-Dye Print Tee with Knot Pants - $22.89
Another set! This color combination just screams happiness to me, it’s so colorful. The pants are also high waisted, big bonus there. It will be the perfect lounging set for homework filled days at home.
American Flag Print Crop Tee - $9.81
This is a very simple graphic tee, but those are very trendy right now. I have never really been a graphic tee kinda girl, so we are starting to hop on the trend slowly.
2 Paper Bag Waist Knot Hem Belted Pants - $20.71
I got these pants in two colors; black and a salmon color. This is another purchase that I can’t wait to wear. The knit tanks from above will pair great with these or any of my bodysuits too. Not able to see this in the picture but there is a cute bow tie detail at the ankles.
Ruffled Armhole Flower Embroider Strip Top - $9.81
I LOVE this top! I put it on to make sure it fit and fell in love. I already started imaging all the different pants I will be pairing it with. The embroidered detailing is bright and delicate. While the ruffles on the shoulder add a flirty edge.
Lettuce Trim Ribknit Crop Top - $4.36
Lettuce trim is also a trend I’m not too overly excited about but having it on this pastel baby blue top makes it doable. Again with the obsession with pastels lately. We will see how I pair this outfit throughout the rest of summer and into the fall.
3pcs Ribbed Bandeau Set - $11.99
I was in drastic need of some simple bandeaus. I didn’t want to buy a bunch of single bandeaus so when seeing this set of three I couldn’t pass it up. They are the universal colors too. They will be so easy to match with tops.
Frill Strap Colorful Striped Cami Top - $6.54
Another bright and colorful top to add to my wardrobe! The ruffle straps are too cute. They add a flirty touch to a simple top. I think this top will look so good with some dark denim, don’t you agree?!
Which is your favorite item? I would love to see what is your favorite item that you have purchased from Shien also. And as always be sure to follow along on all my social media platforms to see into my everyday life. From daily insta story vlogs, OOTDs, thrifting trips, travel adventures, and of course baby Pumkin. I can’t wait to get to know you all more through this fun blogging adventure. Laters babes!

2021 New-construction Home Trends
Located in Naperville, Illinois, this new-construction home by M House Development shares plenty of inspiration and home trend ideas that will make it through to 2021 and beyond.
The exterior of this new home exudes plenty of curb appeal with its impressive architectural details where an arched portico with painted brick is beautifully complemented by a black window tower, board and batten siding and a combination of shingles and a metal roof.
When it comes to the interiors, more trendy interior design ideas can be found. Board and batten is once again found and wisely used as wainscoting. A neutral, but far from boring, color scheme is found in the main rooms of the house. Soothing colors are accentuated with cabinet colors that will continue to be popular in 2021, such as blue grays, light greys, moody greens and of course, the ever classic; black and white.
Find a comfy spot to enjoy this house tour and feel free to pin your favorite pictures and share this post with those you think would enjoy seeing it!

Our Budget Nursery Makeover: Miss Nerd’s Room
Not everything about writing a blog is fun and roses. But one of the things I love most about blogging being a part of my life is that it gives me so many kicks up the butt – deadlines and incentives to finally get my act together and do something.
I need these kicks up the butt, guys! Otherwise I would never make decisions and actually get things done. And this couldn’t be more true of Little Miss Nerd’s nursery makeover.
This room was unfinished and it had been bugging me for AGES. Literally every time I walked in I felt bleh. You know when something broken or just-not-done brings your energy down? I would feel irritated with myself for not having made the time to tackle it yet.
It used to look like this, after I had fixed it up and made it a craft room.
This is nice. This I liked! (Before that it was our junk room, our dumping ground – you can see those photos in this post before I fixed it up and made it a craft room) My budget craft room makeover! It was even in a magazine.
Then it became a guest bedroom for a while (it was so small it barely fit our old double bed) and then it became Little Miss Nerd’s bedroom after she moved from her bassinet in our bedroom to her cot in here, and then it sort of became a junk room all over again.
All these things that didn’t have real homes kind of migrated there. And I’d never decorated it properly with a colour scheme and styling and everything. I’d never decided what to actually do. I’ve talked about this before when I shared Little Nerd’s toddler bedroom reveal, but the thing about our 1970s house is that the bedrooms are SMALL. And Miss Nerd’s nursery is the smallest – it’s 265cm x 265cm – it’s a small and dark room and not super-inspiring. We had nice things – the painting on the wall, the cot, the little toys and bits and pieces, but I’d never tied them altogether properly.
Miss Nerd was nine months old and I was literally always thinking, “I REALLY have to decorate her room properly,” when I got the perfect excuse to finally do it. A publicist for Channel 7’s House Rules contacted me and asked if I would like to do a budget room makeover on my Instagram and share it to celebrate the new season. Of course I was keen – it was the motivation I needed.
The aim was a $250 budget and I was actually excited about having a tight deadline. Maybe it’s the journalist in me that always needs a deadline.
And then, a weekend of solid work, and the room was finished. Have a look.
It is done! Done feels SO GOOD, I wish I’d done it earlier! Sometimes I deliberate all sorts of design decisions for AGES. This time I tried to trust my gut and just do things like choosing a paint colour and place art without second-guessing (and third-guessing, and fourth-guessing) my decisions and I surprised myself because I am actually really happy with it. Sometimes ‘done’ is better than perfect, right? (Something I constantly need to remind myself).
The bit that I’m most proud of is my DIY wall beading/cornicing/railing/trim/picture line (a few people asked me what I would call it and I’m actually not sure what the best term is).
Regardless of what it should be called, what I wanted to add to this room was some wall colour and some character. I was thinking if I did one solid feature wall, it might overwhelm the room and make it feel more closed-in. Adding some beading seemed like a nice way to add some wall detailing and a paint colour without sort of overpowering what is a really small space. I bought the trim from Bunnings – from memory it was about $13 a length.
It’s so simple but it’s quite pretty. What I’m proud about is that I did it myself. Mr Nerd was on a work trip, and I did the room in a weekend on my own. Okay not entirely, Little Nerd helped me measure and cut the beading (but then again, he is three, haha) and my Mum helped me glue it up so it was level, but still, I’m proud of my DIY trim!
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
You have to cut the beading at angles to get it to sit right around the corners and the windows, and I used to have this amazing Dremel which would have been PERFECT for cutting the beading at an angle, but then my charming sister borrowed it and left it in her car and someone broke in and stole it. So annoying.
So, I literally sawed all these pieces with a hand-saw. That wasn’t so easy. I’m sure all my carpenter readers are looking at my DIY beading in these photos dry-retching in their mouths as we speak, but I am so proud of it. Like I did it and I just wanted to keep walking into the room afterwards to look at it gleefully.
It’s probably because I am NOT the most practical person. I am inventive, not practical. Once me and my sister, the one who lost my Dremel, hung shelves in my toilet by drilling holes into the double brick walls with a cordless drill driver, because we couldn’t find the hammer drill that my husband had probably hidden from me somewhere. “It will be fine,” Simone said. (Surprisingly it actually was, even though it took about two million hours, I even wrote a DIY on it). See? Creative. Not practical.
But yes. What I wanted to say about this little DIY was, if I can do this, you DEFINITELY can. Have a crack. If you use a piece of beading with a more rounded profile, you have to cut the ends to get them to sit flush, then sand them, then I used putty to fill in any gaps and painted those with a tiny brush.
DIY WALL MOULDING TIPS
Measure the line from the ceiling, not from the floor.
Paint the walls before you affix the trim, not after. Then your trim will cover any slightly wonky bits and make it look smart.
Paint the beading before you affix it rather than after – way easier. I used white Annie Sloan Chalk Paint.
If you have low ceilings, consider making the line higher up rather than lower. I would actually have raised the picture line up a little higher than where it is, because this is a tiny room with low ceilings, and that would visually make the ceiling seem a little taller. However, when I removed the old IKEA picture ledge, it left two unsightly holes that still didn’t look right even when I puttied over them, so I used the trim to cover them.
Being slim and pine, my beading was lightweight enough to be able to be glued up (I used a Liquid Nails) but a heavier, thicker wood might have to be screwed in – take it into consideration when you choose.
Get someone to help you glue it up so you get it level. Ideally someone who is not in kindergarten.
Initially I actually wanted to paint the walls a sort of light duck egg blue, deep blue or blue-green. But when I looked at those colours on the walls, they just didn’t work. Because this room barely gets much sun (it’s also overshadowed quite a lot by the two-storey house next door) it already feels quite dark, and the cool colours made it seem cold and depressing. I wasn’t even thinking of pink but I was on Pinterest and saw a pretty apricot-coloured room – and then I realised a warm tone was probably the way to go.
The wall paint is Dulux Diva Rouge in half-strength. The colour is actually almost exactly like the same pinky-peachy-apricot colour my parents painted their entire rear extension in the 1990s, and as a little girl who loved blue I always swore I would never, ever paint my house that colour when I got a house, but here I am 20 years later painting my house 90s pink. Go figure.
After the walls were painted and the trim up it was time to play with pictures! For some reason artwork that might look a bit plain or shabby on a white wall somehow looks so special on a coloured wall. And when there is trim or just some sort of colour difference, it gives a nice ‘anchoring point’ for artwork. It sort of looks more pulled-together especially when your art collection is a little more random.
I had so much fun pulling out all these random bits of art that I’d collected over time from markets and op shops and then realising they looked pretty good in here. The little castle long stitch was $4 from an op shop and I thought it was so cute. (Mr Nerd calls things like this my ‘old lady art’). The pink and blue floral cross-stitch I got from a woman at the markets for $5 and I remember her saying happily, “It’s so nice to see younger people appreciate cross-stitch, no-one likes it anymore.” (Mr Nerd probably would have said, ‘that’s true’ had he been there). The castle cross stitch was $4 from a Good Sammy’s.
The oil flower painting was $4 from a market and the Love print I got yeeears ago from a girl who had a stall outside Jessie’s years ago. I have to admit it sat in my cupboard for years, waiting to be framed and hung… does anyone else buy prints and then frames them like years later? The mobile was a cheapie from Kmart.
That huge painting by the cot I got for $10 from the Melville Markets. I love it there. I literally walked past this painting every Sunday at the markets for about five weeks and I liked how it sort of looks like a paint-by-numbers. Then one day I decided I HAD to buy it even thought I had no idea where I would put it.
Sometimes I say wide-eyed to my husband, “I would NEVER buy something from the markets if I didn’t know exactly where I’m going to put it,” but that is such a lie. I impulse buy weird things all the time and then I stick them in the cupboard where they sadly wait for a home/the day when we buy a big house ten years in the future/the day my sister comes over with the (screwdriver) drill to help hang them up.
Anyway, thank God for my hoarding DNA. I was never intending to put this one in Miss Nerd’s room but somehow I think it just works. So, colour can make random art work, guys. Art walls don’t have to cost a fortune and if you like random stuff, a coloured wall can help you tie it all together. Eventually, I might add a pretty patterned rug – how cute is this from Temple and Webster, for example. But for now it’s fine. I was also initially planning to paint the wardrobe doors a light blue or grey, as I thought it would be too much pink, but when the walls were painted it somehow didn’t look too bad, so I’ve left them for now.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
All up, I went JUST over my $250 budget for this room. The last splash was a huge palm from Bunnings – $110, which I put outside her window to make up for the lack of garden there. That view is so crap – ugly old fence and paving. Sometimes a huge plant is just what you need. One day we’ll eventually pave that part of the yard and put some sort of more permanent (possibly potted) garden there, but the effect of having a plant there definitely visually brightens it all up for now. Palms seem to be one of those plants that fall in the love them or hate them category. My husband hates them, but he usually lets me do what I like with the garden, and did I mention he was away that weekend? It has its perks.
Then I celebrated finishing by taking a break and taking Nala for a run by the river with my sister (the other one, not the one who lost the Dremel) and we got pizza.
The best part was when I showed Little Miss Nerd. I’d done the last bits of the room, hanging the art work and the mobile and putting in the toys, while they were at my mum’s place, then picked them up and brought them home. Being just a baby, I didn’t actually know if she would notice any change to be honest, but she lit up. If you go on my InstaStories, I saved a Highlight reel of stuff called Nursery Makeover – there’s a clip where she sees the finished room. Her face cracks me up. Make sure you put the sound on so you can hear her brother harping on. He is a details man.
And I kid you not, the day after I finished her room, I was hanging out in there with the kids (something we never did before, because it wasn’t a nice place to play in) and Miss Nerd took her first steps in her new room! We were all super excited about it and she was so proud of herself. Maybe it was her way of celebrating. (“Finally! Mama got her shit together.”) At nine months old, she started walking SO much earlier than Little Nerd did, which has been new territory for Mr Nerd and I, having an adventurous walker, but it’s also been fun. And funny. I think I could just watch babies walk all day. She reminds us of E.T).
I can’t even describe how good it felt, to FINALLY have finished a room that has been bothering me for months and months. It felt so energising. The home decorating equivalent of Marie Kondo-ing a messy kitchen cupboard. Now this room literally makes me feel lifted up each time I walk in there, but best of all the kids love it too, and they play in there (by themselves! Every morning! At their own free will! Heaven!) It’s still small, and dark, but it’s a much nicer, way more pleasant part of our home. Maya x

An Apartment Renovation– Part Two!
Early last year I wrote a story about Color Outside The Lines blogger and interior designer Artie Vanderpool’s newly renovated apartment.   Fresh from a break-up, Artie had moved to several different apartments, until he finally found one that he thought might be good enough to put down some roots – AND one he could decorate to his heart’s content.  After living in an older, vintage house with dark moldings – Artie craved light and bright.   His newest place was all this,  plus large and airy, and after a rough start, he was ready to share his place with the world.
Originally, the apartment had white walls and a sea of beige wall to wall carpeting.   What you can’t see here is that it also had lots of windows to let in the bright sun.
But the carpet had to go and so did the light fixtures and mini blinds – it was all too boring for Artie’s chic aesthetic.
Artie’s manager gave him permission to make these changes, but he probably would have rescinded if he had seen what the apartment looked like during the reno process!!
Before he moved in, Artie had all the boring carpet pulled up with plans to put down wood floor tiles.  Except, decades of carpet glued down to concrete doesn’t make a pretty picture.   Artie spent nights cleaning up the concrete in order to install the tiles.
But they wouldn’t adhere to the concrete.  He almost gave up and put the carpet back down…but instead, Artie had a brainstorm…
He painted the concrete white!
And then decided he absolutely hated all the white.
Except, now that the floor was tacky from the paint, he tried to install the wood tiles again, and miraculously – they finally stuck!
It’s not actually a real wood floor, but it looks exactly like one.
And here is the new dining room with his newly installed wood floor, chandelier, and gallery wall.   He also installed dimmers on strategic lights such as the dining room and hallway.
He added curtains, textured shades and lots of accessories and the apartment looked fabulous!
Here is the living room with the tufted sofa and chinoiserie cabinet.  More art work and a layered rug over seagrass give the apartment a real luxe feel.
The view from the dining room, with two slipcovered stools.
And in Artie’s bedroom – what he really didn’t want you to see, is that he never pulled up the carpet in the bedroom.   This detail was overlooked in the original story.
Artie had bought this four poster bed online and when it arrived, he discovered it was a bit out of proportion and he had to remove the top canopy.  The bed was just too short, as you can see in this photograph.
Since Artie was never really happy with the bed (of course not!) nor the bedroom in general (of course not!) a MAJOR change was in the works (of course!)
Besides the changes in the bedroom, there also was his media room, which he NEVER told me he even had!  Actually, the apartment has two bedrooms and the second one was turned into a cozy TV room.
Along with those two new projects, there was his kitchen.  He totally redid the tiny apartment kitchen over two weekends and a few nights.  It is amazing.
Ready?
The Living Room:
There have been a only few changes in the living room since the first story.    Artie’s favorite pieces include his pair of Savonarola chairs with their custom black slipcovers and the chinoiserie chest, which is the focal point of the room.    The Kravet sofa has a Pindler and Pindler velvet cushion cover with a Samuel & Sons jute chevron trim to help protect the cream sofa against his two puppies.
In the corner, Artie added an old concrete urn.   He bought the urn for his dining room table, but it was too heavy, the plant is perfect for it.
The new urn and more plaster pieces.
On this side, he added a new brass lamp – and a fancy-pants Hermes blanket is peeking out!!   The chair is from Pottery Barn, but has been discontinued and the brass chest is from Ken Fulk.
                The Dining Room:
In the dining room, there’s a new side chair and a new friend – the bust on the chest.
The cane and leather chair was a steal – $40 at a NYC thrift shop.   Plus the $200 he paid to ship it home!!
His new room-mate is Mr. Nathaniel Hawthorne.  At least he is quiet and doesn’t have an opinion about painting over dark molding.  And he likes to drink, so Artie keeps the bourbon close by.
The Hickory Chair table got a new urn and orchid.
And the very latest tablescape – new blue & white and a collection of antique cross bottles which Artie creates and sells HERE.
The  Kitchen:
Before:  The kitchen is just a regular apartment kitchen.  Nothing too grand, but nice and clean with new cabinets.
How to make this plain area look more “Artie?”
To turn it into his own,  first Artie took down the upper cabinets.  Yes.  He did that himself.  Next, he added shelves for dishes and glasses.  Then, he made a linen skirt to use instead of lower cabinet doors.
The new look:  Artie made a fabric shade for the window and bought a new glass pendant to dress up the kitchen.  A lamp and candlelight add mood.
Artie added open white shelves instead of closed cabinets which makes the kitchen look so special.  And,  I love the linen skirts instead of lower cabinet doors!
Love the oil painting.    I am crazy over the changes!!!  The kitchen looks so great compared to what it looked like before!!
Hard to believe this is the same space – just a few days later!
Artie added a rug to tone down the vinyl flooring but who notices the floor when the shelves are so cute?!?
The brass stool in the hallway is from Target, believe it or not!  The oil painting on the top is by Ted Ellis of Ted Ellis Fine Art and is one that Artie treasures.
One more view!
The Media Room:
The Media Room had two windows and more boring carpet.  For a few months, Artie just kept the door closed.    Then, inspired by a photo of an extra long day bed…
he ripped up the carpet, installed the wood tile floor and created a sofa/day bed:
One long daybed becomes a slip covered sofa.  Artie added three sconces from Lowes for reading light.
I love the one gilt frame mixed amongst the black framed pieces of art.
Artie said he took a few months to decide what to do with this room.  He knew he needed a  space for guests to sleep in and he wanted a spot to watch TV.  He designed the day bed with a 10” memory foam mattress and stiff back cushions make it feel like a sofa.
Art work hangs on the walls.  Love the two wicker chairs.  You know what?  I think the Hermes blanket would look really good in here, Artie!!  Maybe you should move it here?
Art is from Stellers Gallery in Jacksonville HERE.
Seagrass rug layered over the floor and Thomasville leather ottoman doubles as a coffee table.
IDEA:   Artie switched out the legs and added these brass caster ones, which really is an upgrade and a great idea!!!  The caster legs look so much nicer!!!
The custom made sofa is 10' long and 36" wide and is slipped in a white cotton denim.
Pindler & Pindler mohair and silk velvet pillows.
The throws are so inexpensive, Artie bought 8!  HERE  They come in different colors, too.
Curtains with fabric shades are lined with textured shades – to make it all cozy and warm.
IDEA:  Notice the skirted table the flatscreen is on – it is really hiding the dogs bed that is underneath the skirt!!
BTW – Artie made the curtains, shades AND the skirt!!
Plaster side tables and garden seats do double duty.
The wicker chairs are old – from Williams Sonoma.
A very similar chair is available at Wayfair HERE.
I love a wicker chair in a room – it’s a great accent and adds texture and warmth and a touch of individuality.
So sweet – Louna’s watching TV!!!
This is such a cozy and warm room to read and watch TV in.
Great job Artie!!   Now, go bring the Hermes blanket in here.  LOL.
The Bedroom:
The master bedroom was just the same as the rest:  more boring beige carpet and mini blinds.
Artie’s first bedroom décor was very nice – in blue stripes.  But he never cared for the bed.  So he sold it.
And then, he bought a lot, a LOT of brown and white striped fabric and….
Now the bedroom looks like this.  Amazing!!
First Artie got a new bed,  which is iron with a painted finish,  then he lined the walls with the brown and white fabric.  And next he added a striped rug over the seagrass over the wood floors that he had installed.
It’s just beyond fabulous!!  Seriously.   It’s beyond fabulous.
I’m so in love with this room!
At the left is a French bench with a slipcover and an oversized mirror.  At the windows are the white curtains and textured blinds.
The fabric is from Valdese Weavers, a mattress ticking with a brown ribbon used for trim.  Artie ended up using 35 yards!
Close up of the slipped French bench.  Notice the trim.  And notice the trim around the wall covering.  Perfect!
Even though Artie complains that the stripes aren’t straight in places, it looks perfect to me.  He said it was really hard to hang the fabric, but it was all worth it because this is his favorite room.   I agree.  It’s my favorite too!!!!!
Across from the bed is the chest flanked by two slipper chairs with striped fabric.
The two slipper chairs flank the chest.  The chairs are in a different striped fabric.
Another view.  Notice the trim at the ceiling.  So perfect!
The rug is from Safavieh.
Awwww.  Sweet Louna, the French Bulldog!!!
Parting shot.  Notice how Artie brought in some art work with orange tones to tie in with the blinds and the velvet tiger fabric.
Just perfect Artie.  Seriously – this is a dream come true apartment.  I’m sure he could be happy here for the next decade, but something tells me he probably will be moved out before the year is over!!!
To visit Artie’s blog and portfolio, go HERE.
Be sure to visit Artie’s Cross Bottle Shop  HERE.  He sells antique cross bottles, above,  AND he will custom make what you want in case something is sold out.  Just email him at:
to discuss his bottles!
More.
More.
And  more.
AND…
Christmas season is coming up and new design books are being released weekly.  Interior designer Victoria Hagan’s book Dream Spaces is one of the new ones and it’s so beautiful!!
Hagan’s book features 10 houses – and each has something in common…they are all second homes, vacation homes.   The book is large and luscious with beautiful photographs.
There is Victoria’s own house in Nantucket….
And this house is in Aspen.  Can you imagine waking up to these views of Ajax Mountain?????
And this Florida house.
To order Dream Spaces, just click on the book or HERE.
And I haven’t read this one yet.  I did read his wife, Joanna’s book and found it interesting and entertaining.  Now that the Gaines have announced they are retiring from HGTV (no!!!) – I’m afraid we won’t be seeing so much of the Gaines.  To order, click on the book or HERE.

Create a Timeless Farmhouse Bathroom That Will Stand the Test of Time
HI Guys! It is Kristin from Postbox Designs E-Design back with another custom Mood Board JUST FOR YOU! I may be a designer, but I’m also a Mom of 3 so functionality, durability, and style (of course) always tops my list whenever I work on a project for a client or in my own home. And while it is fun to play around with trends in some areas of our homes (I’m a throw pillow hoarder), in some places you want classic and timeless. And a bathroom design is one of them. I've been designing bathrooms for over 13 years now and I have watched a LOT of trends come and go. Most people only remodel a bathroom once or twice in their lives so today I wanted to give you a bathroom that you will love years from now.
I know we all shed a tear when we found out recently that this season would be the last of Fixer Upper. We have all come to love the rustic, Farmhouse look-much in thanks to the Gaines. However, like many styles, shiplap will eventually be replaced by something new (blasphemy, I know!). So on first glance today’s Mood Board might look simply like another Farmhouse Bathroom Makeover. But I want you to look closely…a lot of the more rustic Farmhouse elements are in the accessories. Most of the main pieces (the ones that are costly and difficult to replace) are actually pretty classic looks.
But before I break down today’s Mood Board and show you where to buy everything, here are some bathrooms that hit the perfect mix of Farmhouse style while still being classic:
Classic Farmhouse Bathrooms
This bathroom is gorgeous with some elegant Farmhouse details. But this airy bathroom will feel just as beautiful years from now due to all of the classic elements:
Pure Salt Interiors
This is one of my own makeovers. I helped my client turn her boring “builder bathroom” into a Farmhouse Bathroom with a polished look. Adding in delicate details like this arched mirror, polished plumbing, and marble flooring keeps it elegant.
Postbox Designs
This Farmhouse Bathroom is actually quite rustic. But the wood ceilings, neutral shiplap, and matte black lighting fixtures are neutral and classic. I can imagine seeing this bathroom a decade ago or a decade from now and still loving it:
Williams and Spade
A pedestal sink is always going to be beautiful. Add in a penny tile floor, white freestanding bathtub, and original wood you have a authentic Farmhouse look. They warmed up the white space with this vintage style dresser for extra storage (usually a must when using pedestal sinks).
Better Homes and Gardens
And finally here is today’s Farmhouse Bathroom Mood Board and how you can find all of these pieces for yourself! Just click below on each item number to take you right to the source:
Farmhouse Bathroom Sources (contains affiliate links)
1: cement tile   2: faucet   3: beaded chandelier   4: swing-arm sconce    5: wood stool   6: towel   7: subway tile   8: wall hooks    9: bathtub   10: vanity   11: mirror    12 paint color, BM “Simply White”   13: tile  14: shower fixtures
5 Features of a Timeless Bathroom
1. Classic Plumbing Fixtures
Some people may not know this-but the finish of your plumbing fixtures can easily double or triple the cost! Finishes like oil rubbed bronze and nickel tend to be the highest, but I’m a huge fan of polished chrome for a lot of reasons.
Polished Chrome is always the most cost effective.
Polished Chrome is the most timeless (other finishes have come and gone, but PC has always been in the game!)
It is the easiest finish to clean.
So while I want you to go with the finish you love, just remember-you are not looking at just a faucet, but also shower trim, bathtub faucet, toilet trip lever….the costs can add up. And these plumbing fixtures can be more complicated and costly to change out down the line.
DESIGNER TIP: One of the biggest questions I get from my clients when designing a bathroom or kitchen:
“Can you mix metal finishes?”
Yes! Yes! Yes! In fact, it is the best way to go. I would almost always use plumbing fixtures in the same finish. But then I would use a DIFFERENT finish for items like light fixtures and cabinet hardware. If you want to introduce a third finish (I wouldn't do more than that), try a different finish for your mirrors.
2. Simple and Classic Shower Tile
Tiling your shower is one of the very most expensive places to tile: there are lots of cuts and corners that need to be made. And a shower has an entire system behind it to keep it waterproof, so replacing shower tile involves a lot more than simply the tile itself. So this is not a place to go trendy, but to stay neutral. I know subway tile is all the rage right now-but it is actually a pretty simple, classic look that has been around for decades. For that reason, I personally like the classic 3×6 size versus some of the elongated sizes, or different colors. When choosing your shower floor tile, be aware that not every tile is going to work! Typically you will want to stay at the 2×2 size or smaller (it minimizes a slippery surface), and the tile must be rated not only for a shower, but for a floor as well (for example you don’t want to use a glossy tile for your shower floor).
A note about natural stone: I love these gorgeous marble showers as much as the rest of you! But a warning: they are much higher maintenance. Any natural stone (marble, travertine, etc.) must be sealed on a regular basis. And if you happen to have hard water or well water, I would stay away from these materials as they can be etched or stained over time.
3: Simple Timeless Vanity
I loved this Pottery Barn vanity in the Mood Board because of its straight, simple lines and classic marble counter top. This wood vanity is a great way to warm up an otherwise very white bathroom. Another classic choice is a white Shaker style door vanity-this clean look stands the test of time. Again, this real marble is going to be more maintenance, so if this space is being used by kids (or you want next-to-no maintenance) try a quartz product instead.
4: Sleek White Bathtub
This sleek freestanding bathtub can fit into a myriad of styles, and white never goes out of style in a bathroom. If you are going to add a freestanding tub into your bathroom be aware that the special plumbing tends to be more expensive than the average tub filler. Fillers for freestanding tubs can be placed on the floor or the tub itself-so be sure you know which one your bathtub allows.
5: Classic Tile Flooring
I actually struggled with this one because cement tiles ARE going to be more trendy than a lot of other looks. But so many of my clients are wanting this gorgeous look incorporated into their bathrooms, so I decided to include it in my Mood Board above. I did decide to use a black and white pattern which I believe is going to last longer (and easier to work with down the line) than its colored counterparts. To go even more classic, try a mid-range gray tile, or wood floors. (If children will be using the bathroom I would suggest going with ceramic tiles made to look like wood floors).
If you want to see a more polished, neutural bathroom, you can also check out another Bathroom Mood Board I created for Remodelaholic and this 8 Tiles Under $10 Round-Up
4 Places to Go Trendy In Your Bathroom
I’m certainly not suggesting a plain and boring beige bathroom simply so it won’t go out of style…I’m a designer and I LOVE pretty, fun, trendy things! But for my own home and for my clients, I try to add these elements in places that are much easier to change out. So introduce your favorite trend in places like:
1. Popular Charming Light Fixtures
Swing arm fixtures are really fun and popular and this farmhouse style one in the Mood Board adds a lot of charm to the space. But it can easily be swapped out down the road. Same with this pretty beaded chandelier that could go over a bathtub, as general lighting, or in a toilet compartment. Also be aware that there ARE very strict codes regarding light fixtures over bathtubs! So double check with your contractor, or your area’s regulations, before adding one.
I actually think of lot of these bathroom light fixtures will stand the test of time, so you can also check out these 11 Bathroom Vanity Fixtures (that clock in at $85 or under!)
  2: Stylish Cabinet Hardware
Any DIYer can pull off this update. If you love those gold and brass bathrooms, try adding pops of this metal in places like your cabinet hardware or light fixture. If you go gold for plumbing fixtures, just be aware it is a much more expensive swap that will likely require a plumber.
3: Contemporary Artwork and Accessories
These Turkish towels in the Mood Board add some color and texture to the space, without any permanent decisions.
4: Chic Mirrors
I actually think these metal mirrors are pretty classic looking and gender neutral. But you can get a great focal point for not a lot of time or effort. Be sure to look outside of “vanity mirrors” and look for mirrors originally designed for a living space, like Cassity used in her bathroom here.
5: Trending Paint Colors
The easiest and least expensive update. Make sure to go with a paint formulated for bathrooms for ultimate durability. Here are some of my favorites paints to use (in a bathroom or any other room!):
I hope this Mood Board gave you some ideas and inspiration for your Dream Bathroom. And when designing your bathroom (or working with a designer) be sure to choose items that will stand the test of time.
