Long Post Kiddos Buckle Up
I made my last post to avoid this but I can’t help it I HAVE to do a lyrical analysis it’d be a crime not to
The song I’ll be talking about is -> https://youtu.be/77a8D94weAQ (And I’m using the translation in this video because it’s the most coherent one imo)
VERSE THE FIRST
[Where did I get these memories
So many that I don’t recall
I can’t remember anything
All except the one thing I can]
Now, one can pretty much equate this to what happens when a spirit becomes a shinki: They still retain all their memories from when they were living. (as evidenced by Yukine’s rampage at Hiyori’s school) However, Suzuha had clearly been a shinki for a lot longer than Yukine. So, he’s bound to had forgotten some things. Except “the one thing”, Tomoko. (You can probably see where I’m going with this.)
VERSE THE SECOND
[Over and over again
All I can remember is your face
But I still can’t seem to
Remember you, yourself]
This verse is not from Suzuha’s perspective. It’s from Tomoko’s. Yato says it himself, people forget Shinki and Gods as soon as they see them. Every time Suzuha saw Tomoko again, he’d have to reintroduce himself. She had forgotten him and their promise. But, one could say that she still has those memories, they’re just extremely hazy.
VERSE THE THIRD
[Looping, wrapping ‘round the globe
Chasing the morning sun
We don’t need rails to follow
We follow our desire and chase the night]
Having a connection to a human is very dangerous, whether one is a god or a shinki. A shinki with said connection can end up stinging their master (again, see first season Yukine) and potentially almost killing them. Suzuha is 'chasing’ the hope that he’ll see Tomoko again, despite the consequences.
VERSE THE FOURTH
[One time, a thousand more times
All I can remember is your face
Light rain falls on my eyelids
Like a dark voice that died before it was heard]
This is Tomoko again. She probably gave up trying to remember Suzuha. It was, quoting another song, 'just too far the hue she recalled’. That “dark voice” could be Suzuha’s… 'past life’, in a way. It died before it was heard because we never hear about what happened to him before he became a shinki, and he’d never tell her anyway.
VERSE THE FIFTH
[If I know nothing at all,
I can’t hurt you now, can I?
I’m unable to sleep, even now
If you found out, you’d probably laugh]
This is both of them. First 2 lines are Tomoko, ignorant of the hurt she’s causing him, last 2 are Suzuha, recalling more painful memories and causing himself more pain in the end.
CHORUS
[If I try to simply count emotions
I’d forget the warmth you brought to me/Someday I’ll forget the voice with which you spoke to me
Goodbye, we’ll never meet again
I guess that’s why I feel like this
I can’t laugh, I’m helpless, there’s nothing I can do/The tears come pouring out, and there’s nothing I can do]
Ah, these lines. Again, we’re dealing with a perspective split, even though technically the chorus happens twice. (that’s why I have the slashes, to indicate the line changes) Suzuha is clearly unhappy, despite the bright smile on his face that we always see. His Lady, who he values above all else, doesn’t use him anymore. Tomoko brought him the happiness of SOMEONE consistently (at least, somewhat) acknowledging his existence. Even with the pain it caused, he refused to forget the “warmth” that she’d brought to him. And, on the flip side, Tomoko did eventually forget him, and his voice, and everything about him.
VERSE THE SIXTH
[Just like in a donut,
You can’t have the hole by itself
Proving that you were really here
Is something that I can never do]
For all we know, Tomoko wants to remember Suzuha. However, because she can’t, he can’t prove that she even existed. (Not that we don’t believe him)
VERSE THE SEVENTH
[Over and over again
All I can remember is your face
Tonight too, I’ll sleep,
My body wedged between the blanket and the bed]
Tomoko again. Pretty much the same as the fourth verse.
VERSE THE EIGHTH
[If there were thoughts that never died,
Would that be a relief?
I can’t hope on things passed
So just give me something to bury]
“Something to bury” means Suzuha needs some confirmation. Something from Tomoko. It doesn’t matter what it is.
VERSE THE NINTH
[There’s now an empty hole in my heart
It’s the only proof you were here
And yet I’m still so empty
My heart is torn in pieces, and there’s nothing I can do]
Torn is pieces is pretty obvious. That empty hole is also the lack of Tomoko’s presence.
MISC. LINES
[Breathing quietly, my eyes open wide
Eyes open wide
Eyes open wide
Your name is-]
Tomoko has finally remembered him. It’s too late, though.
