~ Thai BL Favorites List ~
I was tagged by the lovely @thatgirl4815 thank youuu!! 🥰 I haven’t done one of these in a while lol.
Favorite Thai BL: So we’re going with the hardest question first, great djkghf. I can’t pick one all-time favorite but my current top 3 are The Eclipse, Lovely Writer and Not Me I think.
Favorite Pairing: FK are my main babes but I also love JaFirst, EarthMix, JoongDunk and a few others.
Most underrated actor: never gonna shut up about how versatile Tommy S. is and how the world has been sleeping on him for years lol but unfortunately he’s kind of retired atm so yeah. a crime.
Favorite Character: Again, can’t pick one but at the moment Max & Pisaeng from BMF are my spirit animals lol the writers did a fantastic job with them and Gawin and Aou are mastering the portrayal imo.
Favorite Side Character: Jade from Bed Friend. 100%. He’s my best boy. Can’t wait for Middleman’s Love 🥺
Favorite scene in a BL: One that's been living in my head rent-free for 2 years now is the piano scene from Lovely Writer ep12. Them sitting by the piano in matching outfits and Gene telling Sib “I keep loving you more, more than you love me” is my cue to sob fjdkgkdf I love that part so so much.
Favorite line in a BL: “keep looking at me like that..” HAH just kidding. I can’t think of one right now.
Most Anticipated BL (& why): Only Friends for very obvious reasons djkghdf. I’m also really excited for Dangerous Romance though!!! I feel like PerthChimon are a good match, I just hope it won’t be bro central station lmao.
Healthiest relationship in a BL: I always thought LeoFiat from DSN had a very green flaggy relationship lol - I really appreciated their levels of communication and mutual respect.
Most toxic relationship in a BL: Shin and Keng from The Effect. Not only is this easily the worst bl I have ever seen but the level of toxicity and the romanticization of ass*lt, r*pe and gaslighting is beyond my understanding. Stay far away from this drama please.
Guilty pleasure series: At the moment Be Mine Superstar lol it’s so trashy and full of crack but I’m obsessed with it lmao. Highly recommend.
thanks again for the tag this was fun! I’m passing it on to @leonpob @boun-prem @laowen @firstkanaphans @firstkpp @akkayanmisser @firstyok @khaotunq @k-white and everyone else who’s in the mood!!

The one thing I hate about SJM’s POVs in ACOTAR
is that the narrator always seems to be completely biased to their own perspectives in a way that they seem to not understand at all what another character might be going through. Which is just UNREALISTIC.
Let me point out all the ways and explain:
None of the IC know that Mor seems to be uncomfortable with Azriel’s unrequited love and that she’s gay, though she frequents a gay bar/restaurant and she’s never shown any feelings towards Azriel and she even actively tries to sleep with other people when he seems to act more on his feelings or show them more fully. Like okay??
In Cassian’s POV, he says that he didn’t know Nesta was aware of how much self-hatred she had and that she didn’t want to exist. Like dude, she spent a year drinking her life away, distancing herself from everyone, and sleeping with randos when she previously had spent most of her adult life not sleeping with anyone and Cassian knew that she was a victim of s*xual a*sa*lt.
Rhysand who he himself has gone through what Nesta has gone through, didn’t know the extent of Nesta’s trauma??? And even after didn’t really care all that much?? To the point where he was constantly an ass and he threatened to kill her when she told Feyre she might die, even though he should have told her because well feminist rhys over here “you always have choices” didn’t give one to his equal.
Amren after constantly saying “reach out your hand” didn’t reach out her hand, nor show any empathy to Nesta, going as far as being more aggressive to this person who is literally suffering from PTSD and severe depression, and then sort of blaming her for letting it get that far, and then when Nesta apologized said this well to do speech about living with darkness inside of us but choosing hope, like it was that easy and as if she helped at all or even deserved that apology.
Mor, wasn’t that bad, comparatively to the rest, because she was barely in the book, but when she was you’re telling me that this girl also doesn’t understand what Nesta could be going through??? That she says that she belongs in the Court of Nightmares, for what reason??? For hurting her friends, which they admit they didn’t help all too much for a whole year because they thought giving her time would have been fine and who also show that they care about Nesta. Because I hate to tell y’all this, but offering to decorate a room is not helping out a person with severe depression. And this is a girl who was raised in the same environment as Mor, who suffered many of the same afflictions of unhappy childhoods and loss of autonomy. Mor who is used to helping women and  s*xual a*sa*lt survivors and then doesn’t see that in Nesta????
Rhysand doesn’t seem to understand Azriel’s POV, and then he’s like well he never tells us anything. He’s a tough nut to crack. We know he’s a little bit... ehh how you say--messed up, but well we don’t see a major problem as long as he gets his rage out being our spymaster. But oh no, Elain, you can’t have her. You think you deserve her, even though critical thinking skills might have found him thinking oh hey this guy is probably envious of the happiness we have, he’s probably feeling lonely, rejected from the person he’s loved a long time, both of his brothers have mates now, maybe I should talk to him like a BROTHER and less like a high lord.
And then in Nesta’s POV, all of her healing comes at the expense of blaming herself. Like I understand taking accountability and she needed to grow and learn that she has definitely ruined a lot of her relationships and she’ll continue to do so if she keeps up this behavior, but you’re telling me that she doesn’t think anyone did her wrong??? You’re telling me that she feels she deserves all of this?? Even after she starts liking who she is, everyone was not at fault, it was only her fault??? Even after Cassian said what he said--being stuck with her???
You’re telling me that everyone thinks Elain is fine??? That she’s relatively at peace because she’s calm and gardening and pleasant??? Makes me laugh.
Like I just don’t understand. It’s to the point where I feel they characters are willfully ignorant OR that SJM thinks that POVs can’t read emotion in other people or connect dots. All POVs are biased, but NOT that biased. A real person talking to someone else will notice how tired a person looks, if they want to talk or not, by the grimaces, by the way they shorten their sentences, their body language, you can reach conclusions based on context. “It’s been a long day at work, I learned that this person has a new baby, this conversation looks to be weighing on them, I should probably cut this convo short, because I feel for them.” That sort of thing. Which is my biggest problem with this series is that I’m like fuck me, why Whhy WHYYY??? They don’t seem to even see each other, let alone understand each other, and if they can’t understand each other or know who they are, they are not considered family!!! The characters in this series make choices like they are blind to the people around them. That they exist only in their own head. Which again is not realistic, but also causes a lot of problems that I don’t feel would be fixable if you were not aware that they were problems. Like I can easily say, “hey maybe SJM did this on purpose because she’s leading up to something, to heal them in some way.” But all characters are like this--so it’s make me wonder if SJM knows that she’s doing it. Like we thought Feyre was a horribly biased character, but damn. Like I understand this imperfect character arc, but at this point are they imperfect or stupid?
Don’t get me wrong I love this series, but wow... it’s been three years for this next part, she’s written a thousand and one books, it should be better. Every single one of us has pointed out inconsistencies, and they’re not just small things, they’re big overarching writer mechanics and structure and plot and details. So I can hope that eventually it will lead to something, but after four books... I’m losing hope that the issues we’ve pointed out and not just this one are going to be resolved and not just glossed over like they didn’t happen at all.
It’s an adult book, my word. Make narratives more narratively complicated. (Especially if the plot is not the focus)

Things I'm Typing Thursday - @courtorderedcake edition
Trying to motivate myself to write more.
From Hallow, chapter XXIII
Emma hadn’t left her room in days, only appearing for meals where she acted as a grateful guest. Taking a bite or two of food, a careful mask of diplomacy on her face, Killian watched her push around the rest before taking her leave.
“If you’ll excuse me, I still have not recovered from our trip here.” Bowing slightly, she turned before any of their company could offer anything. He recognized fleeing when he saw it. Leaving the table to follow her, he gave a nod to Ingrid, cloak rippling behind him.
Knocking on her door in the smooth polished stone rooms, Emma called out from the other side, voice shaking.
“I’m feeling ill, please -”
“Emma. Open the door.”
“I’m alright, I’m about to take a nap actually -”
“Open the door, please.” He heard her sigh, and the door unlocked. Up close he was surprised how well she had covered her distress. Her eyes were red rimmed, cheeks stained. With the door open a crack, she returned to her bed and laid down curled away from him.
From MTFB, chapter 6
Dr. Hopper's words might have been a pack of mosquitoes for how they buzzed around Emma's head and tried to bite her in the ass before she could process she had even been a snack.
"Give your happiness a chance."
Happiness? It wasn't exactly like she was used to having the feeling in her life, and if not for her found family of friends, she most likely would not have believed it actually existed. She tries though, because her baby deserves the best she can get, and Emma will be as damned as any Demon if she can't make that happen.
(The problem? It's HARD - frustratingly, annoyingly, and deliciously difficult.)
From Riptide Sequel... 🤫
Esper adores her father from the moment she can smile up at him with a gummy grin that mimics Killian’s own. Both twins take after him, both have dark, thick, hair that curls down Esper’s fair shoulders, they both babble with their hands animatedly moving or rocking on their feet, have the same crooked smile under their mother's gift of green eyes and scrunched noses. Esper is content to watch the stars, to listen to his deep voice rumbling over heartbeat and sea as she falls asleep. It's his name she yells when the nightmares come and a monster chases her.
It's her Mum she calls for if it catches her, the violent bursts of her own screams as cerulean flames moved like ghosts in her palms. The feeling of making them is electric, terrifying truly - as terrifying as the original nightmare if not more. It's Mum who teaches her magic; to turn shadows into light filled bubbles or how to produce controlled flame that licks the tip of one finger lazily.
The memory of Mum holding their hands to the open air watching as above swirls of rainbow magic light a starry sky is a favorite and fond moment of time. It's something Esper finds herself using to conjure greater magic, pushing herself further with every spell. Emma Swan may have been the greatest wielder of light magic on the seas, but Esper Jones is not to be outdone. Wielding and weaving chaos magic with elemental summoning in ways that no one has dared, she learns quickly. It's under her family's careful watch and with their connections that she learns from the best around the realms, visits to castles and trips across the world bringing more knowledge and experiences.
It is with pride that her Mum tells her that she has caught the attention of the Apprentice’s Academy, the college of magical arts created by The Middlemist Sorcerer himself. Her father isn't elated. Her father is pensive, and refuses to sit while they discuss her leaving to train
From Lt. Duckling A/B/O fic (Unbeta'd)
The man with the hook hadn't broken a sweat during his mad scramble away from the castle, moving like a cat as he carried her in shadow to the docks and then onto a ship. Emma couldn't see him, her chin and cheek pressed firmly to her captors shoulder, nose against the back of his neck. He smelled wonderful, and she knew that it was another cruel trick of nature that her kind was attracted to their predators. It was frustratingly barbaric to know some sense of her agency was replaced by want, and she resolved to bury the feelings deep, instead contemplating her feelings on if she was to survive this. If she wanted to survive.
Her parents would do everything possible to ensure her return, knowing this was a death sentence, but they had no idea who had taken her or why. Especially a smuggler like this pirate, who probably docked somewhere secret to bring in their goods. If Emma had time, a day or two, her parents would probably find her if luck was on their side. If she had hours… That would be it. Instead of dread, she felt a numbness creep through her skin. This life she was living, it wasn't a life any longer. Maybe this was fate providing her relief.
He gave orders as she drifted in thought, the smell of salt air and lemon oil only enhancing the spice, leather, wood and soap that lingered on his collar. It was rare that Emma was nostalgic about Neal, but the press of someone against her was a comfort she had no qualms longing for. If she had a way to ask she would have begged her parents for a companion just for the platonic touches like this, the ease that it brought when Emma longed for her mate and wept over the broken bond. Just to be near another heartbeat, feeling shoulder blades and muscles under her breasts, the way it calmed an ache that this life had burdened her with -
“What is it? A doll?” Someone asked, jerking her from her wonderings.
“No. I don't know what she is, but it's not a doll. She's breathing, and seems to have awareness. I'm going to take her to the soothsayer and ask for more answers. For now she can stay in my quarters.” Her captor’s voice was a rumble she could feel against her chest, his hand undoing the carefully tied knots to take her off his back. Holding her gently, he curled her against his chest. Emma could see the buttons undone on his linen shirt, coarse hair overflowing. Her mouth went dry while her mind chastised her for absolute weakness.
“The captain needs a trifle to amuse himself with? How about a chance with the crew for the beauty?” A man hooted, and her captor lunged, as if forgetting he was holding her.
“If anyone touches her without consent, they will have spat on my quest for revenge and thus me. They will be rewarded in death.” His eyes burned like a cold flame, the man who had been so lewd quickly turning tail at the display of temper. Emma held on to the glimmer of hope that she might succumb to rest with her body unused by these unscrupulous men. To want was one thing, the reality was a grim and dark other. At least he would keep her In the promise of some safety.
In a way, she was glad for her body's woefully designed biological impulses, for this at least. Only the Alphas on board, like the captain, could shut off her mind with the waft of pheromones or commands of pleasurable actions. If the captain decided to act on any devious intentions while she was captive, she might be able to imagine herself finding him attractive in another time or place. This was neither, but she let herself take him in.
The light of dawn made him look like one of the sculptures she had often gazed at when passing temples, angels, gods and goddesses cut from stone with unmatched artistry. His jawline was covered in stubble and his eyes were blue, but in the light she could see the different colors of his hair, the scar against his cheek, and the grim determination that burned just behind the ice in his irises. Even smelling like rum and with red around his eyes from it or lack of sleep, he did not seem drunk or unkempt, just touched by wind's invisible hand. Emma blinked several times in the growing sun, letting him survey her carefully before he adjusted her in his grip again. Walking down a set of stairs, he opened a door and placed her on a bed before walking to a desk.

Sherlock Fic Recs (mostly lesser-known)
All right, I’ve recommended individual fics from time to time, and I certainly reblog fic rec lists, but this is the first time I’ve tried to assemble a Sherlock rec list of my own. I’m trying to select stories I’ve not seen often (or ever) on other lists for this, and they are in no particular order. Mind the tags. Nearly all are end-game Johnlock, although a couple are more gen.
Since this is my first time writing a fic rec list, please let me know if you enjoyed it.
A Telling Touch - by MikayoToudaiji, 91K, E, Sherlock Holmes/John Watson
Post-Reichenbach. After Sherlock’s death, John manages to get himself re-enlisted and is sent back to war. But when two series of gruesome murders link home and outland together, John is suddenly faced with more battles than he could have imagined. A Reunion, multi-chapter, case fic.
This is one of my go-to fics. John is grieving the loss of Sherlock and back in the army, this time in Syria, courtesy of Mycroft, when he is called home due to the mysterious death of Irene Adler. Irene was the latest victim of a serial killer, but she has managed to leave John a mysterious message. Sherlock does eventually return, but badly injured. There’s a fascinating case fic, a very different and totally platonic Mary Morstan, Sebastian Moran makes an appearance, and a Mummy Holmes who’s absolutely lovely. I find this story so emotionally rewarding, on many levels.
Follow My Voice - by flawedamythyst, 9K, T, Sherlock Holmes/John Watson
Sherlock's voice is all John has.
John is in a coma, and his only link back to the world is Sherlock’s voice. Told mostly from John’s perspective, the payoff when John finally wakes up is lovely.
Meeting Clara - by BlueSkye12, 2K, G, no pairings (pre-Johnlock, perhaps, if you squint)
John and Sherlock have a chance meeting with John's former sister-in-law and Sherlock learns a thing or two about John's return from Afghanistan.
Sherlock learns exactly how much damage John suffered from the bullet that brought him to London and that fateful meeting at St. Bart’s. Clara is very protective of John, even if he’s no longer her brother-in-law.
Bitter Sweet - by distantstarlight, 17K, E, Sherlock Holmes/John Watson
Alpha John Watson is a retired army doctor with a chance to acquire an omega mate. He meets the most unusual omega he’s ever encountered.
A somewhat unusual take on A/B/O dynamics, where alphas need to have a use in life, either with a satisfactory career or as a parent to the next generation. Omegas, including Sherlock, are bought at auction, which some may find disturbing, but there’s no indications of maltreatment on anyone’s part. It’s Sherlock who has all the power in this relationship, although he’s deleted the reasons why. John may have to pay the price for that.
The Art of Seduction series - by flawedamythyst, 97K across 6 works, T to E, Sherlock Holmes/John Watson, Sherlock Holmes/Jim Moriarty, Sherlock Holmes/many OMCs, John Watson/OMC, Mycroft Holmes/Greg Lestrade
Sherlock ran a website called The Science Of Seduction, on which he gave advice on the best ways to get laid, wrote blog entries detailing the results of his various sexual 'experiments' and generally contributed to the stereotype of 'every gay man is a sex-mad playboy'. John avoided the thing like the plague. AU in which Sherlock treats sex like he does crime in canon. Inspired by Queer As Folk UK, but it very quickly went its own way.
I love this series. Sherlock is obsessed, not with crime, but with sex. John is his flatmate and pretty much the only gay man in London with whom Sherlock has not slept. John pines, Sherlock sleeps with most of gay London, and they all go dancing every weekend. Then Jim shows up and ruins everything. Or does he?
Semper Fidelis - by Blind_Author, 57K, M, Sherlock Holmes/John Watson, Mycroft Holmes/Anthea
Written for a prompt. Moriarty frames John and "Anthea" of betrayals which cause both of the Holmes brothers to cut them off. Cue BAMF!John and BAMF!"Anthea" doing their best to clear their names.
John and Anthea go on the run after they are both framed the same day. They protect one another and bond over the idiocy of their respective Holmeses. Both are in established, if hidden, relationships. They bond while on the run.
Evidence of Human Life - by thesardine, 17K, E, Sherlock Holmes/John Watson
Sherlock's sanity deteriorates while he and John are stranded on a deserted island.
I basically summed this up in my personal bookmark as: Sherlock and John on a deserted island. They hunt seals, Sherlock periodically goes nuts, and they start having sex.
This Doesn’t Feel Like Falling - by Dark3Star, 148K, E, Sherlock Holmes/John Watson, pre Mycroft Holmes/Greg Lestrade
When he fell from St. Barts, Sherlock knew he loved John Watson. John couldn't love him back (or so he thinks). Now that he's back from the dead things are back to normal... sort of. When a serial killer targets increasingly high profile gay couples Sherlock is on the case. With a, possibly ill-advised, plan Sherlock and John go undercover as a couple to uncover the truth.
Part 1 of a series, although this is by far the largest part.  Your classic “married for a case” trope, taken to the extreme. There’s a decent case fic, a lot of mutual pining, and some interesting wedding planning. Heed the warnings, there are some pretty graphic depictions of violence when they finally confront the murderer.
The Secret Identity of John Watson - by scifigrl47, 27K, G, John Watson/OFC (but don’t let that scare you!)
Taken out of context, John Watson leads a terrifying life. You have to wonder what those poor women he dates thinks of it, especially if John decides to try keeping one away from Sherlock, and Sherlock decides that it'd be best if he could get rid of her. After all, Mycroft's taught him a thing or two about removing potential 'problems.'
Told from the point of view of the bank girl John saves and then dates. Guys, I am a total Johnlock shipper, and so is everyone else in this crack-fest, although they aren’t actually together. Samantha and her girlfriends are an absolute riot, and their impressions of both John and Sherlock are hysterical.
Small Steps - by crossroadrain, 16K, unrated, Sherlock Holmes/John Watson
"It's John's birthday and all his army buddies have got him a prostitute for a laugh.
A/B/O fic, where Sherlock is an unwilling omega stripper hired to entertain for John’s birthday get-together with a bunch of his army buddies. When John takes him aside to protect him from his army buddies, he learns something more is going on. The writing is a little uneven, because the writer is not a native English speaker, but the story is quite good.
Endings - by Purple_Slippers_18, 3K, T, Sherlock Holmes/John Watson
Fifty years. Eighteen thousand two hundred and sixty two days. It was a long time to be alive, never mind the thirty-four years Sherlock had breathed before he'd met John, which the man in question most certainly did not. As far as Sherlock was concerned, his life – the one whose memories he hoarded like a dragon protecting caverns of stolen gold – began on that serendipitous January afternoon when two strangers met in the research labs at St. Bart's.
Not for those who can’t deal with MCD or find assisted suicide disturbing, but they’re so in love here. Retirement!Lock.
Body Language - by CeruleanDarkangelis,2K, T Sherlock Holmes/John Watson
There is a language to dancing; a call-and-response from one body to another. Even with the poncy kind of dancing I knew he was versed in, the kind that requires classes and counting and rules, there is communication between bodies. Watching him now, I’m more than pleased to discover that he understands my dialect as well.
This is just 2K of absolutely hot dancing seduction. There’s a follow-up fic, Touch Me, about what happens when they get home
Blind series - by inspiration_assaulted, 19K across 3 works, G to T, Sherlock Holmes/John Watson
Lt John Watson, 25, will do just about anything to stay in the Army, even if it means marrying a man he's never met. It's only for two years, and he'll probably be in Afghanistan the whole time. How much can his life really change?
Mycroft arranges a marriage between Sherlock and John, allowing John to stay in the army and Sherlock to pay for rehab. They write each other letters, but have never met. I originally read this story on FF.net and loved it. I was delighted to find it on AO3, which is easier on my eyes.
Words of One Syllable and At A Loss- GwendolynnFiction, 101K across 2 works on FF.net, M, Sherlock Holmes/John Watson
The landmine at Baskerville leaves Sherlock deafened. Unable to stand living without his friend John agrees to learn to sign, but foreign languages cannot be learned in a void. Sherlock helps John learn to sign by finally learning to talk to him.
This was one of my early favorites when I first started reading Sherlock stories on fanfiction.net. The author has slightly different versions up on AO3, but I find these much more enjoyable, as their relationship just seems to work better. The followup story is what happens during the Moriarty trial and after the fall, when Sherlock has to return unexpectedly after John goes missing.
The Otter and the Hedgehog - by Trinity Fire, 23K on FF.net, T, Sherlock Holmes/John Watson, Mycroft Holmes/Greg Lestrade.
Just when John and Sherlock think they have time to rest after a case, they get an unexpected surprise... Unexpected, yes, and fluffy!
This is a little uneven, and has a very awkward, very weird self-insert OC, but Sherlock the otter wandering around the flat tucking John the hedgehog into his scarf to carry him everywhere is just too cute!
Letters to a Soldier - by Pakmai, 70K on FF.net, T, Sherlock Holmes/John Watson
Captain John Watson is a soldier in Afghanistan. Sherlock Holmes has just been admitted to a drug rehab facility, assigned to write a letter to an unknown soldier. He doesn't expect to get a letter back from someone as interesting as John. John doesn't expect to get letter from a recovering drug addict. Together they form an unlikely friendship through letters.
I’ll admit, it’s been a while since I read this one, but this series turned me into a big fan of epistolary fics. The follow-up fic, Letters to a High-Functioning Sociopath, finished after I’d stopped reading regularly on FF, so I admit I don’t know how the series ended.
Flare - by iMusicalMinji, 6K on FF.net, T, Sherlock Holmes/John Watson
John has a lot to learn about an elusive species when he ends up living with one. Like how he doesn't have to change under a full moon, how he is fireproof even if he cannot breathe fire himself, and how he loves the doctor. MythicalCreature!AU
A sweet dragon!Lock story, with some parental elements. Sherlock’s hoard made me laugh, and then I thought about it and it made sense.

Known by @stusbunker
I haven’t finished reading it yet but it’s a really unique story, very dark and gritty. It’s brilliant so far and I can’t wait to read the rest. I’m not usually one to read OC’s either but the mix of OC and reader is so well done… anyway, I love it lol
As I Live and Breathe by @katehuntington
This is an awesome Dean x reader. Her writing style is really good, she’s got so much potential, everyone should check out her masterlist.
Nominated by @slytherkins
Hell and Apathy by @risingphoenix761
Oh. My. Glob. I do not even have words to adequately describe how much I love this fic. It’s like dying and going to fanfic heaven. This. This is what they would serve there. It’s so well written. So in character. For something so short, it’s breathtakingly dark and angsty. There is instant mood. BAM. MOOD. It’s the perfect length, too. It could have easily been overdone or underdone, but it is just right. It brings up all the right questions. It. Is. Hawt. Like, not a little bit. Like, all the way. It is surface-of-the-sun scorching.  This fic…this fic is perfection.
St. Fergus by @risingphoenix761
This fix-it fic is amazeballs. Part crack, part existential reflection. There be banter, and it’s all marvelously In Character.  (Pre-s14 finale In Character, that is. *shakes fist at Chuck*) It’s funny. It’s heartwarming. It better have a sequel or I’m going to die.
Nominated by @mrswhozeewhatsis
His Princess (series) by @georgialouisea
At first, I thought I’d like this just because I do love a good royal AU, but in the most recent part, the story took a turn that I truly wasn’t expecting!! I always love me some protective Winchesters, and bodyguard!Dean is wonderful, but this story has a few extra elements to it that I can’t help but wonder if they’re going to play into the story. I can’t wait to find out!!
Sweet Reunion by @wi-deangirl77
This is the part of the 300th episode that the Show forgot to show us. What exactly did John and Mary get up to while the boys were in town picking up groceries and discovering TEDTalk!Sam was a thing? Heh heh heh. You know. *wink*Wink*nudge*nudge* This is sweet and romantic without getting NSFW and it gave me all the John and Mary feels!!!
House of the Rising Sun (series) by @kittenofdoomage
I mean, of course, everything Rhi writes is fabulous, and her smut is top shelf, but this series is making me ask questions about Stockholm Syndrome and consent and other issues presented in this story. There’s a million directions this story could go and I can’t wait to see which one Rhi picks!!
Bed of Roses (series) by @crispychrissy
This is a mobster AU where the first thing Dean does is torture our heroine for information. The second thing he does is fall for her. Things just go downhill from there, with twists and turns you might not expect. I can’t wait to find out if she can ever get past everything and love Dean! I literally grin every time I see an update!
Control and Release (series) by @thecleverdame
HOLY HOTNESS, BATMAN!! TEDTalk!Sam has some control issues and likes to exert most of them over the reader. In public. I don’t know if this will ever take a turn for the soft and romantic, but even if it doesn’t, this story is STEAMING!!
Dear Dean (series) by @purpleskiesandcherrypies
I wasn’t sure if I could really get into a WWII AU since I’m not much of a history buff, then I read the first chapter and nearly busted! Jamie Blum, only sister in a family of brothers, parents long since dead, decides to follow her brothers when they all go off to war. But instead of becoming a nurse, she cuts off her hair, puts on her brother’s clothes, and goes to fight under the command of Lt. Dean Winchester. POV switches between the two, AND I LOVE IT. This is a must read!!
Splintered Flames, Burning Dreamer by @thedevilinthedetails
Part 1 of this is your typical ABO fuck-or-die scenario, with a good amount of angst layered into it. Part 2, however, takes that angst, multiplies it, and stabs you right in the heart with it. Then, just when you think you’re done, it rips your heart right out and stomps on it. A lot. SO GOOD!!!!
Nominated by @thelittleredwhocould
Crazy Love by @saxxxology
This series is hot AF. Saxxy fucking killed it. Plus, as someone who’s part-Native American, this fic is extra awesome to me.
Take the Edge Off by @saxxxology
For all your TED!Sam needs. Delicious.
Bitten (series) by @saxxxology
I haven’t seen many monster!Winchester fics and this is one of my favs. I absolutely love the spin Saxxy puts on A/B/O in this verse. Plus, smut. Sexy sexy smut.
Faith and Amazing Grace by @mrswhozeewhatsis
I absolutely love this revisiting of a s1 episode. So angsty. So good.
I Know Your Wife (She Wouldn’t Mind) (series) by @teamfreewill-imagine
This is a fic that will never get old, imo. I don’t read RPF (like, ever), but Jamie has created such beautiful dynamics between all the characters and this fic gives me life.
Forever by @bamby0304
Feelings. Aaaaaaallllll the feeliings. So many feelings. I might have cried a little.
Her Saviours (series) by @bamby0304
I am adoring this rewrite. The relationships between the reader and the boys are such a mess, and watching them work through familiar cases together is so much fun. The very sexy sex is a nice bonus ;D
Spanner in the Works (series) by @bamby0304
This is probably one of my favorite series I’ve read so far this year. This is also the fic that first really introduced me to Amber’s writing and I can’t wait to see how it goes.
Nominated by @manawhaat
We Kill and We Fuck (oneshot) by @jayankles
Well, fuck me! I am a sucker for serial killer kink, through and through, and this fun twist of A/B/O, AND Alpha Ruby with the two of them... hot damn!
 I Have A Dream (oneshot) by @idreamofplaid
It’s so fluffy!!! I absolutely love tattoo artist Jared, love the tattoos you described on his body, love the sea shells and that he does it on you in the comfort of your own place. It’s soft and warm and ugh, just so Jared.
Thank you all for the awesome work and great feedback!
As with the BFAs, these are not actual awards! This system is set up so everyone in the pond has a chance to share the love and promote a fic/author that has grabbed your attention. The more people that participate, and the more everyone remembers to submit their own fics after posting, the better this will be :D
THANK YOU ALL AGAIN, KEEP UP THE AMAZING WORK, AND AS ALWAYS, HAPPY WRITING!

OQ Prompt Party Week
Tumblr media
Hi everyone! I set up a Tumblr because I thought it would be the easiest place to post all of the prompts for the OQ Prompt Party week.
If you’d like to take part, just select any of the prompts from the list below and write a fic, make a video or create some art based on it. Please note that more than one person may choose the same prompt.
You may submit new stories or include the prompts in any of your existing verses.
Artists & Video makers may use any of the prompts, but there are some Art/Video specific ones at the bottom of the post.
I have condensed some of the prompts that were a little too long... and feel free to take some liberties with some of the more specific prompts!
If you have any questions, please tweet @OQPromptParty
OQ Prompt Party week will run from 21st - 27th August. Please don’t post anything until then.
Prizes:
Everyone who posts a prompt for all seven days of the OQ Prompt Party week will be sent a limited edition, one of a kind Outlaw Queen button/badge. These will never be available again, so don’t miss out!
Each day there will also be the opportunity to win another prize. You will be entered into a prize draw and the more prompts you write, the more times your name will be entered into the draw. I will announce which prizes will be available on each day soon.
There will also be a separate prize for most prompts included in a single one-shot/chapter (crack!fic encouraged).
And now! Without further ado, here are your prompts:
Prompts:
Friends with benefits
Pride & Prejudice AU with Regina in the role of Mr. Darcy
Hospital AU with Regina as the Chief of cardio (nicknamed ‘The Evil Queen’, work addicted, hates everyone, on call room = sex) and Robin as a Nurse (follows the rules, has a crush on Regina, makes out with her in the on call room, lives in campervan in the forest)
DarkOQ go to New York (aka real World) for their honeymoon and then stops by Storybrooke to check on Regina.
Regina kidnaps Robin to prevent him from marrying Marian.
Regina finds out her fiancé (can be any ouat character) has been cheating on her with her sister on her wedding day! She runs away to a different city or county & meets Robin.
Regina meets her soul mate online.  But is reluctant to meet Robin in person for fear of ruining what they already have.  Will Robin be able to change her mind? And what happens when her friends try to force her hand?
Robin, Regina and the Evil Queen... perhaps maybe Robin meets one, then meets the other... doesn't quite realise straightaway... ooh they could be twins!
Regina as a headmistress and Robin being a billionaire whose son Roland, goes to the school where Regina is the boss.
Robin being Regina's personal trainer, because Regina wants to work out before her wedding but we all know that wedding won't happen now that they met.
Regina mothering Roland (it'd be awesome if Robin witnessed at least a part of the scene)
Robin actually dies in 5x02 and after seeing Robin getting taken to the underworld Regina chooses to follow. It's the author's choice whether she goes alone or with the storybrooke clan.
Regina owns a Dessous boutique and Robin comes in quite often to buy stuff for his imaginary girlfriend in Regina's sizes and her taste because he just wants to talk to her and work up the courage to ask her on a date but Regina thinks him weird bc why would he flirt with her and buy all this shit for his girlfriend. Later she finds all the unopened bags with stuff in his apartment.
Wonder Woman scene at the healing lake thingy. Regina sees a (naked) man for the first time.
"you can't just run around and threaten to kill everyone." "Oh but you never told me that so how would I know?"
Dark Robin contacts Regina when he doesn't know how to deal with the EQ after a particular fight.
Ink Heart AU Whenever Regina reads a story out loud, characters come to life. She vows never to read out loud again.  One day she comes home to find Robin Hood in her son's room. Henry confesses that he shares her strange gift.
"The poor guy at table 4 has almost ordered the whole menu just so he can look at you and you didn't even give him a smile. How about when you slip him your number instead of ask what dessert he wants."
Troy AU (Robin as Achilles and Regina as Briseis, evtl. Hook as Paris and Emma as Helena) when her temple is plundered Robin saves priestess Regina from the hands of the Spartan men.
Roland spills something over himself in Regina's vault and now any time he lies he turns further into a donkey (like in Pinocchio).
(early OQ) Regina comes home and finds the television is dead because it has tons of arrows sticking out. "What on earth did the poor TV do to you?!"
Missing Year body swap AU with Regina and Robin
Homeless AU "You gave me a dollar every day for three years and now I had a bit of luck, I have a job and I really want to pay you back."
"have you by any chance seen my vibrator?" "What's that?" *Explanation* "Ooooh, that thing. Yes, used it to fix the ____."
Regina and Robin meet Daniel/Marian in the Underworld
Cora didn't get the sheriff but the real Robin on Regina's birthday.
Regina meets the baby of DarkOQ for the first time
It's cold and OQ share a blanket
OQ's first camping trip with the kids and Regina turns out to be a natural at _______.
Robin isn't really dead, he's caught in the book of "Adventures of Robin Hood" and tries to get (a message) back to Regina.
Henry decides to throw the author's rules over board and rewrites his mom's happy ending.
It's Regina's first bday after Henry is gone and she feels lonely. The doorbell rings and a little Roland is waiting there with a half eaten cupcake for her (ofc he says it wasn't him, but the icing on his cheeks says it all).
OQ go skinny dipping in the water and when they come out someone stole their clothes.
After missing year just after curse broke. Regina asks Robin to pick up some tampons for her from the store. It turns into quite an adventure because Robin doesn't know what they are.
AU A: "sorry you're sitting on my sun lounger. B: oh and since when is it yours?" A: I clearly reserved it before breakfast with my towel - which by the way you're sitting on! so get your butt off my sun lounger or else."
Robin spills a drink on Regina.
Your OTP is covering up a murder.
Robin doesn’t die instead is resurrected somehow and in NYC as a dark Robin. Things from the finale happen. Regina kills the EQ but she doesn’t die because her soul is tethered to Robin or something like  that. EQ and evil Robin find each other. Regina has to find a way to kill EQ or reunite with her and save Robin from the darkness.
Robin dies or so they believe, but in actuality a villain has given Robin a memory curse and he remembers nothing of his life with Regina. Regina helps him remember.
Regina and Robin go look for Daniel’s grave and they happen to find  both his and Marian’s stone. Both tipped over and Regina and Robin  share an emotional moment.
Groundhog Day AU with OQ.
A fic based on the movie Sabrina.
Regina drunkenly confesses to Robin about the lion tattoo and pixie dust. Robin misunderstands and thinks she doesn't want him around her
Regina picks up the newest book by her favorite writer. Another best  seller that she can’t get enough of. What she doesn’t realize is that  the heroine from those books is inspired by her and the books were  written by her sweet, handsome but oh so shy (at least in RL) neighbor  Robin.
Regina and Marian are single moms, neighbors and best friends. When Marian dies she leaves Roland in Regina’s care. A  few months later Robin moves in next door. While unpacking his things  he discovers a picture of a very pregnant Marian and remembers their  night together before leaving for England. There is a date on the back  of the photo and he does the math. He is a father and his son is closer  than he thinks.
Through a glitch in the system (or was it?) two strangers find  themselves married to each other. (somewhat inspired by the movie  Accidental Husband).
Regina’s house/apartment is on fire. Lt. Robin Locksley and his  men save her and Henry. She goes over to the firehouse to thank them  properly and ends up inviting Robin for dinner.
Robin as gladiator and Regina as his domina. (pure smut)
Robin proposes to Regina with a little bit of help from the Storybook and Henry.
The smuttiest smut you’ve ever written in your life.
Robin is taking dancing lessons to surprise Regina on their first  wedding anniversary (since their wedding dance ended in a disaster when  he broke her toe) and Regina thinks he is cheating. She even follows him  with Tinkerbell to find out with who.
Robin and Regina are roommates. Robin accidentally walks in on her getting out of the shower. Regina returns the favor.
Regina drags Robin along with her for a little shopping. Their last  stop is Victoria’s Secret and things get “hot and steamy” in the changing room.
Regina and Robin are  single parents (Henry and Roland are the same age and go to class  together) and have clashed a couple of times during parent/school  meetings. She thinks he is immature and irresponsible. He thinks she is  overprotective and overbearing. A school camping trip comes up and  both go as chaperons (not their idea). Henry and Robin bond and so do  Roland and Regina and they both start seeing each other in a new light.
Regina as a soldier. She comes home from her second tour in Iraq. She  is not the same woman she used to be after all the things she has seen  and  all the things she has done. She wants to get her life back on track.  Along the way, she meets Robin who is battling his own demons and  understands her better than she thinks.
Robin trying to stop EQ!Regina like Xander did with Dark Willow on BTVS.
Robin picks up a hitchhiker named Regina. Things get interesting while on the road.
Henry and Roland are friends (they are about 10 years old). Roland  really likes Henry’s mom Regina and Henry thinks Roland’s dad Robin is  pretty cool. They decide to play cupid.
Henry makes sure that  several things in his house break and Robin (a handyman) has to come and  fix them. Hopefully, his mom’s broken heart as well.
Regina,  single mom, mayor and workaholic is in desperate need of a new housekeeper/nanny after Henry has scared off yet another one. Robin,  widower and single dad who’s life has not been easy after losing Marian  is in desperate need of a new job and home for him and his son Roland.
After a blackout, heavily pregnant Regina ends up stuck in an elevator  (or another place, whichever you prefer) with a stranger. Unfortunately,  her water breaks and Robin has to help her deliver her baby.
Regina is Mary Margaret’s childhood friend and maid of honor. Robin is  David’s best friend from college and best man. The first meeting  between the couple’s best friends doesn’t go as planned and ends in a  disaster with a very upset MM and a disappointed David. Regina and Robin  are forced to put their differences aside to ensure a happy wedding day  for their friends.(If there is a part with them having to take dance  lessons and things heat up during that I won't be sad.)
Regina and Robin as thieves: It is the 3rd time he had outsmarted her and stolen from right under  her nose. Only this time he is a bit careless with his disguise (at  least that’s what she thinks) and she manages to see the lion tattoo on  his right arm which helps her track him down. Her plan is to steal  everything back from him. His plan is to steal one last thing from her:  her heart.
Robin, a single dad, saves Henry from being run over by a car, but gets hit himself in the process.  Regina is so grateful she helps him and Roland while Robin heals.
Robin is a disgruntled former employee of Cora Mills who, in a moment of desperation, kidnaps Coras daughter, Regina.
Robin, somewhat of a ladies man, gets the shock of his life when a  social worker hands him a baby boy, telling him that his mother had died  and that she wanted the baby’s father to take care of him. Robin doesn’t know what to do and asks his neighbor Regina for help.Regina  is reluctant at first. She doesn’t like him. Thanks to him Henry has witnessed his conquests walks of shame on a regular basis which always led to awkward questions.
Robin can’t explain the feelings he has for Regina. One night he  overhears a very drunk Regina and Tinkerbell (Tink already knows that  it’s Robin and drops a few hints without giving him away) talking about  the man with the lion tattoo and it all starts making sense.
Robin cuts in line at the supermarket. Regina is not having it.
Robin is so used to sleeping in the forest he won't fall asleep in houses etc because of the missing forest noises (birds, frogs...)
instead of Neal, Pan's shadow Robin and Roland to Neverland.
Author Henry by accidentally mixes up some of his comics with the stories he's supposed to be writing down. ... therefore somehow Regina and Robin trade places with some comic book characters.
Regina used to be a teen Popstar, now a few decades have passed. Life has happened etc and she's asked to be back on stage for a show to celebrate the decade she's been famous in. They want her to share the stage though with a few men who used to the British boyband "The Merry Men"
AU based on the film "one fine day"
Enchanted Forest, s3, OQ secret candlelight dinner.
David, Killian and Robin talking about things from the land without magic with King Arthur (and Merlin). Gadgets, things that vibrate (including sex toys and phones), birth control, underwear…

When he meets her, he understands why... What he doesn't understand is why his heart flutters the moment she speaks to him nor does she get why a strange tattoo on his arm seems strangely familiar.
Based on BBC's Sherlock, Regina as Irene Adler and Robin as Sherlock Holmes, but with their own unique touch to it... What happens when insane consulting criminal Gold hires a well known dominatrix to take out the world's most genius detective? How does her mind that matches his own manage to make him feel something he had never felt before???
He's a loner, willingly avoiding human contact and emotional connection after the unexpected loss of his wife (and child... I know I'm bad). He's given an AI program that talks to him as if it were a real person. Her voice intrigues him, her responses are clever and witty... She sounds so real.... If only she were. Is she?

And makes sure she knows he does. And that his children do too.

Negrophilia in Film
Hey Guys, it’s Thinblackgirl again! This is my first blog post in a series about films for my GSW class and I really wanted to share this here with you guys. For this first post, I'll be talking about the 2017 film Get Out by Jordan Peele. I'll be doing this by writing a review about a video essay I found on Youtube about the movie called “The Philosophy of Get Out - Wisecrack Edition.” So if y’all have not seen the film SPOILERS AHEAD!!! You have been warned. To start off, the video by Wisecrack is 15 minutes long and fits the format of a video essay. Clocking in at 15 minutes allows for the channel to properly build ideas and explain them, while not rushing the viewer through each thought. It also fits the usual mode of a video essay, because there’s a distinct beginning, middle, and end. Additionally, they have used both audio and visual elements to help make their ideas seen. These are many of the traits found in educational youtube videos of this kind and falls into similar formatting of channels like Film Theory and Cracked. Babies other channels Wisecrack enbeds quotes, ideas, and other snippets of videos from outside sources to help present their ideas to their audience. Wisecrack has a team of many writers, editors, and people dedicated to make the videos, which can be seen and heard when they mention it in other videos on the channel. To produce videos of this type and to have a team of workers like this, there is an amount of cost involved. To offset some of the cost, Wisecrack often monetises the videos and adds paid sponsorships into the beginnings or ends of the videos. Wisecrack’s 2017 Youtube video essay “The Philosophy of Get Out - Wisecrack Edition” comments on the deeper context of modes of real world racism that are brought to light in the 2017 film Get Out. When talking about the negrophilia seen in the film they explain its use by saying “Negrophilia isn't truly about understanding black people and their culture. It's about using them to satisfy your own desires, this is not understanding humans, its collecting them.” They are talking about the racism seen by the white “liberals” in the film and how they use black bodies to achieve their own goals. They go on the mention how the goals can be the desire for black bodies both sexually and athletically. We can see this idea taking places at multiple points throughout the film, though its most easily expressed by the literal implantation of white brains into black bodies without their consent. This idea did not originate in film, and that is whats makes the film sure a excellent study of the sometimes more studle modes and forms of racism we can see in the real world. As a black woman living in America today, I can see this is happening in most of the media that I consume and subconsciously and in the conversations I have on a day to day basis. Many of the themes that Wisecrack explores in the video essay, including the idea of negrophilia, are things that many people in the black community are forced to deal with everyday. The video begins with the Narrator for the channel Jared describing the movie and giving a general overview of what the film is about. He also give some background about how the director and writer of the film Jordan Peele came about the idea of creating this movie and how he was able to put his ideas into action on the screen. To give a brief overview of the film for anyone who’s reading this but hasn’t seen this but decided to keep reading anyway. The film follows our protagonist Chris Washington as he goes to meet his white girlfriend's’ family for the first time. As the film progresses, we can see the first half as a study of older white “liberals” interacting with a black man. On the other hand during the second half of the film, we discover that the party they are having is very similar to an auction for Chris and one of the buyers attempts to get his brain put into Chris‘s body without his permission.
After laying down the background information for the viewer the video begins its analysis of the first section of the film. In the first section of the video they tackle parts of the first section of the film by talking about the underlying racism seen mostly in the actions of the Armitage family and how this affects Chris. The Armitage family tries very hard to relate to Chris‘s blackness and as Wisecrack points out there is it further alienate Chris and “.... this tendency to over perform the acceptance of black only further cements the difference between them.” When watching this part of the video, Wisecrack adds clips from the film that they used to illustrate this point when in particular being in the scene where the father says that he would’ve voted for Obama for a third term if he could have and another where the father asked how long this “...thang” has been going on between his daughter and Chris. This is one of the things that the film does really well that Wisecrack is really smart to point out. I have experienced this time and time again, where peoples over acceptance of all things black has become a sort of performance for them to try to prove to me that they are in fact a liberal and don’t mean any harm. These efforts more often than not come off as insincere and alienating to be honest. I think a lot of other black people who watch this movie can really relate to seeing that on screen because I don’t know a single black person who hasn’t had to pretend that something like that was okay in front of other people. Whether it be your boss has done that to you, a teacher, a colleague, a friend, or just somebody who you don’t feel comfortable confronting. A lot of black people go through this and I think it goes under the radar a lot of white folks because they just don’t they don’t understand the experience. Pointing this out in such an upfront and honest way is a great way to help people understand what this experience is like for others, even if it only happens on a smaller scale. Around the three minute mark of the video they start talking about the term negrophilia which I touched on earlier in this post. they described this as the fascination with the black body and go on to give a brief history of the term. They go on to explain that well throughout the film we can see classic versions of negrophilia, we can also see a modern or literal take on the term when they try to implement the brains of these “white liberals” into the bodies of black men in the third act of the film. When bring up the idea of a white person wanting to become a black person they relate it to the national news case of Rachel Dolezal as a one off joke. For them, this is a good way to help the viewer base this idea into their own reality and allow for the ideas and concepts to truly connect with the real world. While this is a really great video essay on the film Get Out it doesn’t escape my view or irony that this is all being narrated to us by a white man. Jared, while doing a great at explaining these ideas, is someone who can’t give the emotional understanding or background that someone who is black could’ve if they have been narrating this video. THE BLOB (1958)
As teenage couple Steve (Steve McQueen) and Jane (Aneta Corsaut) enjoy an evening alone, they witness a shooting star fall from the sky. Noticing how close it was, they decide to see if they can find it. They are beaten to the scene by an old man (Olin Howland), who discovers a meteor. When he tries to inspect it with a stick, it cracks open, revealing a strange, goo-like substance within. When the old man touches it with the stick, it quickly latches onto his hand. Steve and Jane take him to Dr. Hallen (Stephen Chase), then return to the old man's cabin to search for clues. Unfortunately, while they're gone, the mysterious blob consumes the old man, Dr. Hallen, and his nurse Kate (Lee Payton), growing noticeably larger in the process. As the blob continues to devour the townsfolk one by one, Steve, Jane, and their friends try to convince the police, led by Lt. Dave (Earl Rowe), that something is wrong. Though the police don't believe them at first, the blob finally makes its presence known as it descends upon the town's movie theater...
Though The Blob appears to be nothing more than a random 1950s B-movie at first glance, it's actually one of the most iconic and influential monster movies of all time. The trope of young people trying unsuccessfully to convince their elders and the authorities of the monster's existence would go on to become a staple of countless horror movies to come, imitated just as many times as the corrupt politician ignoring the threat from Jaws, or the monster being attracted to the heroine from King Kong. It also features one of the silver screen's most memorable monsters: The Blob, an amorphous glob of translucent goo that soon becomes stained red with the blood of its victims. Whereas most movie monsters of the era were simply oversized insects or other ordinary animals mutated by radiation, the Blob was an entirely new type of beast, a shapeless mass able to slide and squeeze into even the tiniest of places, making escape from it all but impossible. Sure, it's slow (though it can manage the occasional burst of speed), but if it corners you, you're done for. The effects used to bring it to life are surprisingly effective as well. Created out of colored silicone, the Blob's creepy rolling and sliding was achieved with simple gravity. For such a simplistic concept, it's surprisingly frightening. The movie also featured a rather memorable title theme: "Beware of the Blob." Written by a young Burt Bacharach and performed by The Five Blobs, the song is a fun, catchy number that would become a staple of Halloween for decades to come.
This film is also notable for being the leading man debut of screen legend Steve McQueen, but unfortunately his casting can't help but incite a few chuckles right off the bat. Steve's character (named, uh, Steve) is supposed to be about seventeen years old. However, McQueen was twenty seven at the time of filming, and he looks roughly forty, resulting in one of the oldest looking teenagers in cinema history. Steve is a good character, refreshingly not represented as a stupid, irresponsible teenager (though he does have a brief bout with irresponsibility when he races against his friends near the start of the film). For about the first third or so of the movie, Steve has a tendency to pause and stammer a lot during his dialogue. It's a nice little natural tic at first, but it becomes a little annoying as he continues to do so even as things start getting bad. Thankfully, though, he drops this once he and Jane sneak out to hunt the Blob down. Aneta Corsaut (later known for her role on The Andy Griffith Show) as Jane turns in a decent performance, but like Steve, for roughly the first half of the movie she's honestly a bit of a drag. Any time Steve starts showing any personality, Jane simply hangs her head and gives him a disapproving look. It's never really said why, either, which is odd. Like her boyfriend though, her quirks end once they sneak out for the third act.
The supporting characters range from good to annoying. Earl Rowe does a solid job as the sensible Lieutenant Dave, who doesn't immediately tell Steve and Jane off when they come to him with trouble, and in fact supports them the instant there are some serious signs of danger. John Benson is amusing as Sergeant Bert, the paranoid cop who essentially distrusts all teenagers. He'd rather believe that every teenager in town is 'bugged' by his war record and are testing his patience than that there might be an inhuman threat roaming the streets. Stephen Chase does a good job as Dr. Hallen, as does Lee Payton as his short-lived nurse Kate, both perishing in one of the film's more memorable sequences. Elinor Hammer plays the effectively annoying neighbor Mrs. Porter, who Dr. Hallen had previously asked to watch over his house during the night. Mrs. Porter enters the scene as Steve, Jane, Dave, and Bert examine Dr. Hallen's home for clues and serves no other purpose than coming up with a seemingly unending series of reasons as to why nothing has happened to Dr. Hallen, how he left on a business trip hours ago, and how Steve and Jane are wrong. It's an annoying scene that really accomplishes nothing but delaying the plot. Another such scene takes place near the start of the film, where Dave catches Steve street racing his friends and gives him a stern talking to. While not a bad scene (it helps develop Dave as a kind, reasonable person), it still feels like padding of the highest order. Such scenes feel unnecessary considering the rest of the town doesn't become aware of the Blob until essentially the end of the movie. Finally, we have Jane's little brother Danny, played by Keith Almoney. While not a terrible child character (except for the very end where he nearly gets our heroes killed), Danny is clearly written as if he was five or six years old. Unfortunately, Almoney appears to be roughly ten or eleven, which can be fairly laughter inducing as he spends the entire movie in footie pajamas clutching a teddy bear.
When The Blob comes to a close, it ends on an iconic "The End... ?" as the amorphous beast is air-dropped into the Arctic, never to be thawed again. However, the film was a surprising hit, earning a whopping $4,000,000 at the box office. And so, even though it would take nearly twenty years, we had not seen the last of the Blob, as one tiny piece would eventually find its way back to civilization...

‘Kindness of Strangers’ a Last Resort for the Rural Mentally Ill
Even though more services are becoming available to divert the seriously mentally ill from the justice system, rural communities are struggling to find the resources they need to bring those services to the people who need them.
Transportation, for instance, can make the difference between success or failure.
“We have no public transportation here,” said Pamela Hopkins, a Fremont, Neb., lawyer who is running for Dodge County Attorney. “Many of these people are unable to drive, for one reason or another, whether it’s because they use alcohol as a substitute for their treatment and they lost their licenses because of that, or they’re too poor to have a car.
“They’ve got to depend on the kindness of strangers.”
Without ready access to counseling or treatment often located far from their homes, defendants might otherwise find it hard to prove to judges that they are serious about addressing their problems.
Nebraska, like many states with large rural populations, is at the sharp end of the challenges of dealing with mentally troubled individuals. Most of the state is experiencing a shortage in mental health and psychiatric providers, according to the state’s Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Office of Rural Health.
Linda Witmuss, deputy director of the DHHS Division of Behavioral Health, acknowledged that the system needs to undertake a “richer review of data” to better determine how the state’s finite resources should be allotted to meet the need.
But she argues that mental health reforms launched by the state in 2004 have led to more services at the community level.
“There’s always room for more services—don’t get me wrong there,” she said. “ (But) all of our rehab options (and) services, including expansion of medication management, came about as a result of that reform.”
In 2004, the Nebraska legislature passed Bill LB1083, which was designed to reduce the use of inpatient psychiatric services at the state’s three Regional Centers in Lincoln, Norfolk and Hastings, and invest more in outpatient and community-based services that could help those struggling with mental health in their own communities.
The reduction of inpatient beds was consistent with nationwide efforts to move away from institutionalizing the mentally ill and instead treat them in their communities. But those interviewed by the Tribune say that the infrastructure for community care was slow to materialize, and it still isn’t adequate for those who may be in need of more intensive care.
“There’s a lot of people who aren’t even leaving their homes to get the services that they need because they’re just homebound because of their anxiety,” said Hylean McGreevy, a licensed mental health practitioner and alcohol and drug counselor at Methodist Fremont Health’s Behavioral Outpatient Services.
“They’re not functioning well and they fall through the cracks.”
According to numbers provided to the Tribune by the Nebraska Jail Standards Board, of 1,225 individuals discharged from the Regional Centers in a four-year period following mental health reform, nearly 500, or around 40 percent, ended up in the county jail system at least once.
About six percent ended up in the prison system.
Collaboration Between Police and Health Providers
The challenges often begin at the street level, where rural law enforcement encounters individuals in desperate straits.
“There is a lot of stress on the community,” said Fremont Police Lt. Kurt Bottorff. “Times are hard for certain people — the stress builds up and that’s where some mental health breakdowns can take place.
“Their behavior ends up being a law violation and they’re sometimes jailed because of it, instead of addressing the core problem.”
Under a pilot program that started in July, the Fremont Police Department became one of only two departments in the state to hire a crisis response co-responder—a licensed mental health practitioner who works directly in the police department two days per week, responding to 911 calls alongside officers when she believes mental health is an issue in the complaint.
The pilot program, funded by a two-year grant from the Behavioral Health Support Foundation and operating in collaboration with Lutheran Family Services, aims to help keep those struggling with mental health issues out of the criminal justice system or avoid involuntary hospital stays, and to connect them with community resources.
Until recently, even the nearest medical services were a 40-minute drive away, in Omaha.
‘When people are released (from jail) into the community, and they don’t have the supports in place, it becomes a revolving door.’
Now, mental health practitioner Rachel Wesely can respond at her own discretion instantaneously, from within the department, and can follow up with callers after law enforcement leaves.
‘When people are released (from jail) into the community, and they don’t have the supports in place, it becomes a revolving door.’
But as concern mounts about a growing number of mentally ill individuals entering the criminal justice system and winding up in county jails, local stakeholders are taking a more focused approach to line those individuals up with more appropriate services.
“There’s a need for access to treatment in jails and when individuals are incarcerated, it’s not getting filled,” Wesely said. “Sometimes when people are released back out into the community (and) they don’t have the supports in place, it kind of becomes a revolving door.”
Medication and services can be expensive. Many lack insurance to help cover costs, though some programs offer sliding fee scales, which can adjust payments based on income and family size. In recent years, co-pays and deductibles have become more expensive even for those who have insurance, providers say.
Additionally, treating mental illness is more complicated than treating physical ailments, and ensuring compliance to treatment plans poses challenges, providers say. Psychiatric treatment requires significant “trial-and-error” to find the right medications, doses and strategies. That means lots of time spent taking medications that may ultimately need to be adjusted or changed, and that may carry unpleasant side effects that deter compliance.
It’s a process that requires patience and follow-up. And ensuring that patients comply with their treatment plans, remain stable or avoid self-medicating with illicit drugs and alcohol is a challenge that’s only exacerbated by barriers like access and affordability.
“Let’s just use a hypothetical,” said Dodge County Attorney Oliver Glass. “I can’t afford my medication, my medication makes me feel strange anyway, but I do know that when I self-medicate with street drugs or alcohol, that’s going to make me feel better at least.
“And that’s when, at least in my experience here, a lot of crimes are committed.”
Intensive Care Challenges
The Regional (Health) Center has some space available to the regions for more intensive care. It houses individuals who have been ordered by a court to receive a competency evaluation or restoration, as well as individuals committed by a local mental health board. The latter process only occurs if an individual in crisis refuses to be voluntarily committed and is put under an emergency protective custody.
But wait times to get into the often crowded Regional Center have gone up, officials say.
Witmuss of the DHSS said that the state is looking into the need to increase capacity, but cautioned that opening new beds alone wouldn’t solve the problem.
“We have a lot of complex cases,” she said. “When you can’t discharge folks, then you can’t admit folks, either.”
Mental health programs and services are funded through Medicaid as well as the state’s behavioral healthcare regional system. Providers contract with one of the six regions, which then funnels funding from DHHS’ Division of Behavioral Health, federal block grants and county-level matching funds.
But grants and pilot programs, like the Lutheran Family Services’ co-responder program, are only guaranteed for fixed periods of time. Agencies and organizations are always shifting their appropriations to keep up with where the demand is highest, which can lead to changes in program availability.
Meanwhile, at the local level, stakeholders are giving new focus to the issue. Providers are exploring more innovative solutions to staff shortages, such as Telehealth, which would allow for remote counseling or med management.
Last year, Behavioral Health Care Region 6, which encompasses Douglas, Dodge, Cass, Washington and Sarpy Counties, hired Vicki Maca as a full-time employee, dedicated to trying to keep mentally ill individuals out of the criminal justice system.
The national ‘Stepping Up Initiative’ works to help the mentally ill avoid jail.
That hiring decision was spurred by a nationwide initiative involving the National Association of County Officials, the American Psychiatric Association and the Council of State Governments known as the Stepping Up Initiative.
The initiative is a data-driven effort to reduce the number of people with serious mental illness booked into jail, shorten their average length of stay, increase the connection to care for those individuals in jail and reduce rates of recidivism.
While other behavioral health care regions are engaging with the Stepping Up Initiative, Region 6 is the only one that’s hired a full-time employee devoted to the topic.
But officials and providers remain optimistic. Rachel Wesely, the co-responder at the Fremont Police Department, law enforcement’s enthusiasm and willingness to cooperate with the co-responder model has led to success, she said.
Lt. Bottorff agrees.
“What I’m seeing now is reduced calls for service for the same problem,” he added. “There are times when we get so bombarded with the same situation—they didn’t have the tools to fix their problem.”

The Military Versus Marijuana
uncredited writer, Los Angeles Free Press, 5 January 1968
SAIGON — The pot generation is fighting the Vietnam  War and severely straining the military’s traditionally hard line against marijuana.
A trooper can get a joint in Vietnam just about as easily as he can get a cigaret and it’s almost as cheap. Young GIs coming from the States, where pot smoking has become the thing to do and a symbol of this generation’s revolt, are turning on in downtown bars, squad tents and bunkers.
Army cops arrested 524 soldiers for puffing grass in the first nine months of 1967. This is more than double the marijuana offenses in all of 1966, when 238 were arrested.
Marijuana use was the biggest single offense committed by Army men in Vietnam in the last two years, with the exception of smaller misdeeds such as traffic violations. The biggest increase in offenses has been in narcotics.
Brig Gen Harley L. Moore Jr., departing Usarv provost marshal, points out that at the same time there has been an increase in troop strength and military cops are stepping up their efforts to find mary jane smokers.
First reports in studies now being made indicate less than half of one percent of all the men in Vietnam smoke pot, according to military sources. This would put the figure at about 2,500 men. GIs scoff at the official estimates. Pfc X, an admitted grass smoker, estimates two-thirds of the military here have at least tried mary jane. John Steinbeck Jr. sparked a flap recently when he returned to the U.S. from a Vietnam tour and said 85 percent smoke.
Recent news stories about use of marijuana by Vietnam GIs were splashed across many U.S. newspapers and military officials, nervous about their public image, clammed up.
In early October United Press International reported that 95 GI prisoners in the Usarv stockade at Long Binh filled out questionnaires about pot. Of the 95 men, 79 admitted smoking it at least once. They fell into three categories: 45 percent had used pot before entering the service, 10 percent since entering the military and 45 percent since coming to Vietnam. A total of 58 percent of the 79 had smoked grass more than 20 times.
After the UPI story and other articles appeared, Usarv officials claimed UPI figures were wrong but said they couldn’t release the correct ones because the stockade survey had since been placed under classification. A high-ranking military police officer, however, confirmed that the UPI figures were “about right” and the reporter who did the story said he got them from a highly reliable source.
Usarv officials pointed out the men who answered the stockade questionnaires were “losers,” convicted troublemakers who can’t be considered representative of GIs in Vietnam.
The findings of the stockade survey sparked a larger study, which is now being conducted among Stateside-bound GIs as they pass through the 90th Replacement Bn at Long Binh on their way home. They’re asked to fill out anonymous questionnaires about their use of marijuana. Results of the study probably won’t be available for several months, said an officer.
Marijuana is easy to conceal and difficult to detect. Because of the stiff military penalties few GIs are willing to admit they use pot. These factors, along with the military smokescreen, make it hard to pin down an accurate picture of the actual use of the drug. The truth probably lies somewhere between official estimates and GI rumor.
Pot grows plentifully throughout Vietnam and is easy to buy wherever a soldier happens to be. In An Khe just outside the 1st Air Cav Div base camp in the Central Highlands, a joint costs from 17 to 34 cents. For troopers who like to roll their own, a small I packet which will make five reefers costs about $2. The sticks and the loose stuff are wrapped in coarse pink paper or old newspapers.
Down south in Saigon and Bien Hoa the sellers are more sophisticated — and they charge more. Pushers empty the tobacco from American filter cigarets, fill the paper with pot and reseal them with a hot iron into commercial packages. A pack of 20 goes for about 600 piasters ($5) in Saigon and 400 pees ($3.40) in Bien Hoa.
Vietnam’s mary jane is dirt cheap compared with the price in New York, where an ounce of average pot sells for $15 to $25 and the highly regarded Acapulco Gold goes for $50 an ounce. Its low price and availability have tempted some troopers to send grass home to friends or to build up a supply which will be waiting for them when they return Stateside. Pfc X and Pfc Y say large numbers of soldiers are mailing pot home but here again, GI rumor probably exaggerates.
But some soldiers are doing it.
On Sept. 26 1st Cav Div CID agents, tipped off by an informer, stopped a Pfc as he was boarding a Stateside-bound plane at the end of his Vietnam tour. In the lining of the go-to-hell jacket the young soldier wore, agents found a pound of marijuana.
Earlier this year Pfc Webster Murphy was kicked out of the Army and sept to prison for a year for possession and use of marijuana and for attempting to mail it to the U.S. The 173d Abn Brig trooper’s letter, containing about 20 grams of pot, had been intercepted.
CID agents classify the three grades of mary jane available in Vietnam as coarse, medium and fine. In the Central Highlands the medium grade is most common and has some of the stems and seeds chopped up with the leaves. The fine grade has no stems and seeds.
GI users fall into two basic categories—potheads who acquired the taste back in the U.S. and the first-timers who experiment with it in Vietnam.
A military police official estimates that about a quarter of the 524 arrested in the first nine months of this year were first-time smokers. Most military officials believe—and hope—that only a small fragment of the pot smokers are regulars who turn on several times a week. The official view is that the majority of GI mary jane smokers are rear area troops who indulge during their off-duty time. Most officers claim line troops don’t often use the stuff in the field but one military police officer admits, “We just don’t know how many combat troops smoke.”
Maj Robert Donovan, assistant provost marshal at the 1st Air Cav Div, believes few troops smoke in the field because, “They have a strong sense of loyalty to other soldiers they’re with and they fear what people will think.” There are indications, however, that some smokers carry their pot to the field.
Boredom may well be a much bigger reason for soldiers in Vietnam to smoke pot than it is for young guys in the States. One of the oldest and truest cliches repeated by military men is: “Combat is hours of boredom interspersed by moments of terror.”
Says one high-ranking military police officer: “Two guys go on duty in a bunker. They can’t take a radio. They can’t take something to read because they can’t have a light. They run out of conversation. So they take a few reefers.”
In past years GIs who wanted to escape the boredom on guard duty slipped in a bottle or a few cans of beer. This generation’s bag is pot.
Some GIs say their officers and NCOs know there’s pot in the company but don’t turn in the smokers, especially in combat outfits. “If a guy’s been on the line awhile and is experienced,” said one trooper, “why should the company commander turn him in for smoking a little pot? He’s going to lose the man and get a green replacement.”
The strong bonds of loyalty and friendship which grow between men, officers and EM who face the dangers of combat together also can make a line officer or NCO reluctant to turn a trooper over to MPs.
Many military authorities theorize that the Viet Cong are big suppliers of pot. It’s a good source of income for the VC, they argue, and reduces the effectiveness of U.S. troops. “The enemy is the big pusher,” warned the 1st Can Troop Topics. “The use of marijuana in Vietnam not only endangers the life of the user but also the lives of those depending upon him for the successful accomplishment of his mission. The VC are much aware of the effect of the drug and are instrumental in providing a supply.”
First Cav cops admit they have no hard evidence to support this theory but maintain it is reasonable to assume the VC are picking up extra money by selling grass. Usarv MP officials say they have not found any evidence of VC pot selling but believe the theory has merit.
Very few American troopers are trying to make money by selling mary jane. There’s little profit for a GI middleman because the stuff is cheap and easily available from Vietnamese peddlers.
But from the tip of the Delta I to the top of the DMZ soldiers are smoking pot. The official military estimate that one out of every 200 GIs is a pot puffer adds up to one-half of one percent of all the men in Vietnam.
Today’s soldiers generally are much better educated than GIs of past wars and wiser in the ways of mary jane, thanks to increasing use of pot in the U.S. and widespread publicity about it. They’re less likely to buy the grim predictions that a man on a marijuana high becomes violent, even to the point of killing; that pot users often graduate to hard, addictive narcotics, or that the stuff produces psychosis and brain damage. And the growing use of pot indicates few GIs are scared off by the threat of a DD and five years in the pokey.
Still, the official line on marijuana is often the hard one, based on the old bugaboos.
“A lot of our leaders have the mistaken idea that marijuana gives permanent damage,” said Lt Col W. R. Davis, division surgeon of the 1st Cav, “and that there is a probability of untoward reactions.” There are very few cases of psychotic reactions to marijuana, he said, and no mental or bodily damage results from its use.
There are some signs that the military’s hard line on marijuana is cracking a little. U.S. soldiers in Europe usually are tried by general courts martial for marijuana offenses. Offenders in Vietnam rarely face a general court, which is the only jury that can hand out the maximum of a DD and five years, unless marijuana is coupled with another serious offense.
More often, men caught with pot are tried by special courts, which can’t give a bad discharge or more than six months in jail. Some are punished by Article 15. In one Army division during the first nine months of 1967 eight men were tried by special courts and two were given Articles 15 for pot. Both Articles 15 and four of the courts involved men in line outfits.
“We’ve talked to some kids who smoked marijuana and we haven’t prosecuted them,” said a legal officer in the division, “because we were convinced they tried it once and didn’t use it regularly. Every college kid in the U.S. is experimenting with pot. We can’t expect our soldiers not to.”
Said another legal officer: “Military justice has grown up some in this respect. If a kid with an otherwise good record as a soldier is caught with a marijuana cigaret in his pocket, he usually won’t be hit with a general court.”
The marijuana problem, Gen Moore recently told a reporter, is a nuisance, not a catastrophe.
