Megumi doesn’t sing. 

And no, not in the cringe-emo way. He doesn’t shrivel up at the sight of joy like a vampire in the sun, no matter how much Nobara insists so. He doesn’t mind when others sing. He just doesn’t prefer to. The way he sees it, there are things that he’s good at, and there are things that he’s not, and there are things that he quite frankly doesn’t care about either way. Singing falls in the latter category.

There is one thing he utterly despises when it comes to singing, though. Christmas Caroling. Blame Gojo and his terrible falsetto, and his terrible renditions of religious songs, and his terrible ploys to get him to sing in public. Now whenever Christmastime rolls around, he’s turned off by the whole tradition. It’s a trauma response.

So if someone told him a year ago that he’d be here, knocking on some poor stranger’s door on Christmas Day, mentally preparing himself to sing Silent Night and Little Drummer Boy, he’d calmly suggest they seek professional help. And yet, here he stands, in a Santa hat and a green scarf, fiddling with the songbook in his hands.

And then there's you.

His feels his lips pull into a frown. You’re cold. No matter how poorly you try to hide it. Your cheeks are tinged apple-red, and your nose twitches every five seconds, like a bunny, because only an idiot would be outside when it’s literally freezing. “Come here,” he sighs, beckoning you towards him. 

You squint at him but listen, pouting slightly when he starts rubbing your hands between his. “I’m not cold,” you protest. 

Megumi rolls his eyes. “Shut up.” 

You do. It’s quiet for a moment, as Megumi does his best to warm up your extremities. He worries that he’s offended you, but presses on, blowing hot air into your palms. When he raises his head, you’re watching him carefully, snowflakes twinkling in your eyes. 

“Better?” He asks, his throat raw.

You smile. “Better.”

The front door swings open, and he drops your hands, picking up his lyrics while you greet the strangers at the door. 

Yeah. There’s no one else he’d do this for, not in a million years, other than you.

That’s how he knows that he’s gone. Just gone. For you, who beams under the porch light, rocking on the balls of your feet, lashes dusted with snowfall that flicker and melt with each wide-eyed blink.
