She can manipulate food. She either can make it super healthy or super not no matter what it is. This ability has led to her being able to change what any one item of food is. Hand her an apple and she wants cake? Well now its cake. This allows her to make cool meals that you wouldn’t expect and to make things absolutely delicious.
BIOGRAPHY

Jolene Rose Johnson was born to Demeter on a warm spring evening and exactly one week later she was delivered to her father, Charlton Johnson and his wife Rosanna. Rosanna had been rendered infertile four years before due to a bout with ovarian cancer. The two had been distraught, upset that they never got the chance to have a little girl. Something that Rosanna had desperately wanted. Their youngest, Victor, was now 5 and asking for a little sister; while the oldest, Chandler, 17 didn’t truly care other than knowing his mom was upset about it. They had just moved to Pordenone, Italy and Chandler had met a girl who worshiped the greek gods. She particularly was very drawn to Demeter and taught him about it. One night he left an offering for the goddess asking to bring a baby sister to his family.
Needless to say… Chandler was VERY surprised when Demeter herself showed up at their doorstep saying she was summoned. After a long conversation with Chalrlton and Rosanna a deal was struck, and a baby was promised, so long as they continued to make offerings to Demeter and teach the child about her. So that’s exactly what they did. Little Jolene was a sweet, easy baby. She barely cried, mostly cooed and was always watching. Rosanna started cooking with the baby on her hip, and that is the first real memory Jolene has. Memories of her mother teaching her how to cook. How to make delicious food that made people’s mouth water. She was taught from infancy that Demeter was her mother, that she would have special abilities and that she must hide them. So, Jolene did her best, but one of her skills? Well it was in cooking. She could make anything be utterly nutritious or horrible for you, she could make things taste delicious even if they were gross. But that was hard to prove… so she used these skills as a young kid to bake cookies for new friends every time her family moved.
You see, her father is an air-force pilot and her mother an air-force nurse, the two of them have made it so that each move is easy, so that the kids feel comfortable and most importantly; excited! They loved visiting new countries, learning new things, making new friends. For Jolene it was easy, her delicious food drew people to her, and she loved cooking for them. She loved making new friends and taking care of others. When she was 10 years old her family moved them to Icaria, Greece, they had a small air force base on another isle but many of the military family members lived on the other isles around the base – Jolene’s family just happened to choose Icaria… based on the recommendation from demeter. When they arrived they realized there were tons of other demi-gods here… specifically half siblings of Jolene. While she was older than them she loved them all deeply.  (Over the years she bakes each of them three dozen cookies for their birthdays or if they tell her something awesome happened in their lives. She also made a point to always visit them – once a year for a week or two.)
This care and love, extended to all children too – so what was a demi-god to do when she was 15 years old sitting on the beach and sees a toddler suddenly manipulating the water around her? Well, knowing that humans were always off put and scared of demi-gods (She had showed a friend her ability to transform any food into other food and the friend called her a demon and thought she had been drugged), she rushed over to the little one and started to try to distract her from the water. Instead she made silly faces, she tickled the little one’s feet and started to build a sandcastle with her.
When the girl’s father turned around he was startled, Jolene was having fun, and 100% not phased by the bit of water that was supernaturally wrapped around her foot. No instead she leaned down quietly and whispered to the child “You have to be careful little one, people don’t always like seeing powers. You don’t want to scare them do you?” and with that the water seemed normal and Jolene gave a big smile to her – and her father. She ended up talking to the child’s father and offered her babysitting services and help any time he needed it. And for the next year and eight months, Jolene babysat little Maristela helping her in whatever ways she could, and watching her grow. She was heartbroken when her mom came home one day and told them that they would be moving to the Philippines. She had come to really love her charge and wanted to see her grow into a fine young lady and help her through things – but she knew this day was coming. She knew they’d move and be somewhere else… but that didn’t stop her from crying and hugging Mari and promising her that she’d do her best to keep in contact and make sure she was good.
She was 4 months from her 17th birthday when they touched down in Manila, Philippines. It was different, interesting but very different. With both her siblings long gone and off in college Jolene was adjusting to the first move without one of them with her. So she turned outward, looked for more friends, became even more of a social butterfly than she had already been. Jolene went to the gala’s her parents were invited to, she talked to anyone who would listen to a 17 year old… which is how she met Ulani. They stood on a balcony and joked about the bad outfits some wore, they talked about life and what they hoped to do with their lives, they talked about their ideals and then – protests. Lots of protests. They fell along the same lines and from that moment on the two had become friends. Jolene attended protests with Ulani, always bringing snacks and water to make sure they were well fed and not tired.
And just like with Mari, she was a bit heartbroken when just before her 18th birthday her father got a promotion and they had to move to Los Vegas, Nevada. She couldn’t just stay in the Philipines even if she wanted to; she was still a minor and well – college was coming up. She had to figure that out. So she moved once more. When she arrived in Vegas she met Max, the two hit it off instantly. They were friends first, but friends slipped into something more rather quickly. He threw her a big party at his parent’s Casino for her 18th birthday, she lost her virginity to him that night.  She had really come to love him – so imagine her heartbreak when she decided to bring him lunch one day in their sophmore year of college and was told “Oh he’s downstairs”, she wonders down the stairwell only to hear a rather familiar sound ��� oh and then there was his ass – bare bottomed – fucking someone else. It was a sex club she realized quickly.
Jolene was heartbroken, shattered, and totally unsure of herself. She bolted back up the stairs, grabbed a notepad and scribbled out a quick note to him before shoving the food and note at the receptionist and vanishing. Within ten hours she had packed up all of her things and moved in with another friend across town. She avoided places where Max was at all costs while she worked on transferring her credits to another college. She ended up in NYC
New York was a dream. She hadn’t ever been and the second she stepped foot in it – she felt at home. She enrolled at the International Culinary Center and NYU. NYU specifically for business management while also going to ICC to learn how to cook anything and everything. She dated, cooked and enjoyed her time in NYC. She had her own apartment, her own friends and didn’t feel the need to up and leave after two years.Jolene was 25 when she met Wolfgang. The two bumped into one another and it was from that moment on they had a sort of – whirlwind romance. Things moved quick but – they hit a wall. After a year Jolene was ready to say those three little words…. Hell she had said them but Wolf…. He refused, he couldn’t seem to bring himself to do so. And as much as it broke her heart… Jolene ended things, telling him that she hoped to one day get married and if he couldn’t even say those words… well there was no hope. She still cares deeply for Wolf and hopes he’s well, hell she still sends him his favorite treats on his birthday even 5 years later.
Not long after the breakup with Wolf, and graduation from college, she was offered a job as a personal chef for some hot-shot mogul. So she traveled the world with her for three years, secretly lusting over the other woman and occasionally – very rarely the two would spend a night together and act like nothing happened. No Jolene kept a smile on her face and cooked food happy to travel the world, try new foods and make new friends. It was on one of these trips that they ended up in Australia and she took a day off to go to a renaissance fair. Something she had always wanted to do but never managed to get time to do. So donned in elf ears, fae wings and a pretty dress she wondered the fair just enjoying herself. She was hanging out with some drunk new friends when Cordelia walked up to her, asked for a kiss – and well. She had never been kissed like that. The two spent the rest of the afternoon together; walking the fair, talking, eating food and kisses. Lots of kisses.
Sadly – the next day Jolene had to leave and was on a plane to Japan. Since that day Jolene has been looking for her again. But life hadn’t been kind for the past two years in that department. Until, just last week Cordelia did a live stream telling the story of how they met, of course Jolene had no idea. She never watched live streams. But her friend did. Her friend remembered hearing the other side of the story and within minutes of it starting she had forwarded the link to Jolene telling her to watch and say something. But she was too nervous to do so. No, instead she just rewatched it when she was down and needed a smile. But, life has been kind in many other ways. She worked, saved up money and was finally ready to open up her own restaurant. But she didn’t know where she wanted to do that… until her mother appeared again, telling her to go to Icaria. She was already looking at going back to Greece, a place she had lived as a 10-13 year old and loved it. Her siblings on her mother’s side, had already been pestering her to come live on the isle with them, but her mother asking her to do the same? Well it was the straw that broke the camel’s back… so she packed her bags and decided to move there – at least for a little bit.

that was definitely a special and important episode, and i appreciated seeing this side of john, this is gonna make it way easier to write fanfic of him without the story ending up as a trauma survival fic

i was kind of underwhelmed
things i rEALLY REALLY WANTED that didn’t happen:
john actually reacting to dean saying they made friends with an angel (and a werewolf, a vampire, demons, etc etc)
john meeting cas
cas being part of that family meal (i get that the point was he was 2003!cas and not there, but still)
jack being in this even a little bit??
and as the story went on and reached the end, what it really lacked, for me, was a comparison where we can then see how john/mary & max/her crush = dean/cas...........and that just didn’t happen
i think it just ended too soon, really
and there was a lot more they could’ve done with the altered timeline, could’ve brought a whooooooooole lot back from past seasons and just made it a smorgasbord of nostalgia
i get that it was focused solely on john, which gave it an emotional core, so there’s not actually a problem there, i loved that
but it felt kind of dull and slow and....... soupy..........?
(i just mean. the emotional feeling in my brain as i think about it. feels like soup. specifically pumpkin soup. warm and spicy and goopy and nutritious but ultimately not very filling)
then again, if the pacing had been sped up, i would’ve complained it was too rushed. so there’s no winning, it was probably fine ?
i think my favourite part was the kids. i loved the kids. i love the lil gay romance going there. i loved the fact it was a destiel/team free will parallel (even if that part of it was OVER SO DAMN QUICKLY MOST PEOPLE MISSED IT). i loved the kid in the hat, he reminded me a lot of the actor thomas brodie-sangster, and also johnathan byers from “stranger things”
also enjoyed sam vs. the serial killer clown, and that whole aspect of hunting that we haven’t seen in a while, felt very nostalgic
also enjoyed 2003!cas, but was both distressed and frustrated by him fighting dean and then NOT GETTING ANY CLOSURE ON THAT WHATSOEVER. the point was to make dean and sam realise they really needed to send john back, so essentially, in some respect, they did choose cas being their friend over john being around, but that part of the overall problem was never mentioned at all, cas wasn’t mentioned at all after the fight
i’m just looking forward to coda fics that start where this episode leaves off, and dean talks to cas, because i am craving that SO FUCKING BADLY i can’t even express. like. it’s becoming maddening. i just. want. them. to have. a conversation
and the black guy dying at the start?? and the other black kid running away from the ghost and never being seen again? and besides the unnamed diner guy offering info on skip day, being the ONLY PEOPLE OF COLOUR IN THE ENTIRE STORY??? NOT COOL, not a fan >:{ (still better than it used to be, but soooooooooo many white people. so many. so. many)
anyway. um
so that wasn’t my favourite episode, but not because it was bad, but because it didn’t live up to expectations. i tried not to have any expectations (i really tried) but there were just... basic things this episode needed that i felt it was lacking (*cough* cas *cough*), and i can’t really shake that feeling
HOWEVER, having seen 2003!cas be the thoughtless drone that he was, i can appreciate just HOW MUCH character development has happened while he’s been around, which.... i suppose, is a sort of nod to his entire existence ???
anyway, 9/10, and a big ol shrug
but yeah. seeing john be kind and understanding was amazing (and completely changes how i’m gonna write him in my fics in the future, since he’s probably gonna be in the fic instead of just mentioned) and having him say he’s proud of dean and he loves him was just a super nice treat c:
sam being emotional is the best, too. sam confronting his feelings 10/10
i just. i want aaaaaall of this. but with cas. i really want that. so goddamn much. ;~;

One Way Street - Breakfast
Alex yawned their way into the kitchen, much as they did every Saturday.
Dad was already there and had already set up everything anyone could ever possibly want to eat at this time in morning. There were artfully arranged glasses of orange juice, ornamental toast and even what looked like a freshly-picked bunch of wildflowers sitting right in the middle of the table.
The cereal dominated the whole scene, however, if only because there was so much of it. Each place he’d laid out had at least three bowls of the stuff and the boxes were still on the table, turned so that they were facing you the minute you walked through the door. It was certainly visually striking, but by this point the novelty had somewhat worn off.
He’d been acting a bit differently since he died. If Alex had to put their finger on it they would likely say it was Dad’s sudden and overwhelming fascination with breakfast that was the biggest break from his original personality.
Apparently such minor fluctuations in interests and behaviour were perfectly normal side-effects of the re-mapping process and were nothing to be concerned about. Certainly there had been worse things than a full and nutritious breakfast being set up for you every single day at exactly the same time. They were spending a lot on cereal now though, but Dad was insistent that this was sustainable. Very insistent.
“Ah! Son and-or daughter! You can see that it is breakfast time again! Most important meal of the day, is breakfast! Sit and eat breakfast!” Dad said brightly, pulling a chair back for Alex and smiling perhaps a little too widely.
Again, this was not standard behaviour from Dad. Back before the accident he probably would still have been asleep at this point in the day, his particular line of work not requiring him until a little later than most people. Nowadays though he was up at the crack of dawn getting everything set up - it was like clockwork.
“Cereal again?” Alex asked, taking up a spoon. This was a rhetorical question. Dad had got very upset the first and only time they’d pushed for some variety in the mornings. Bowls had been thrown, a window broken, unkind words spoken. Best to just play along, Mum had said. Anything for a quiet life.
“Cereal is the perfect breakfast for every day! Get your day started right - with cereal! Breakfast - it’s not just for breakfast anymore,” Dad said, finger raised in the air for effect. Alex did not feel like pressing him to explain what this statement actually meant. It was unlikely he knew anyway.
Biologically speaking this was Alex’s Dad, top to bottom. They custom-cloned the bodies to exacting specifications and copied across their uploaded brain-patterns perfectly. A miracle of applied technology, a demonstration of mankind’s mastery of death itself. It was all in the brochures. That’s what they said. It’s what people paid all that money for.
Alex wasn’t entirely convinced, however. They weren’t sure they’d ever seen Dad eat a bowl of cereal before his death, for one thing. Not even once. It seemed a sudden and alarming one-eighty in terms of behaviour. Perhaps it was just Alex’s imagination, though. Probably best to stop picking holes in the return of a dearly-departed loved one and just appreciate it. The brochures said that, too.
The brochures admitted that while a certain level of discomfort was inevitable following the return to life of someone you knew (officially the process was known by the trademarked term of ‘Renewal’ but no-one called it that) these feelings were both unwarranted and unhealthy.
What better way to make your Renewed loved one feel unwelcome then by acting as though they were somehow unnatural and unlike the person they had been in life? How very selfish, said the brochure. Though not in those exact words - it was somewhat more diplomatic.
There was also a pay-by-the-minute phone number listed in the rear portions of the brochure where you could receive basic counselling to deal with issues that might have arisen. This seemed a quaint anachronism and a token gesture, but well-meant. Presumably.
Alex had rung the number, once. It hadn’t been an especially enlightening experience. Trying to approach with an open mind and a relaxed attitude Alex had very quickly come to understand that the softly-spoken, slightly-condescending person on the other end of the line was reading off a script and in all likelihood was only barely listening to Alex in the first place.
What questions Alex had actually rung up with were answered in the vaguest, least-helpful terms. Alex had been primarily interested in Dad’s soul, if only out of curiosity. The existence of souls was an established fact and a fact that had been established a fair many years ago.
Human beings (and some animals, though research was ongoing in that department and those they had confirmed weren’t quite the same as humans for reasons no-one really bothered to explain) had souls. This was known. This was accepted. This was a fact.
Very little beyond their confirmed existence had been learnt since then, however, as all efforts to probe into wherever souls may be said to go after departing the body had ended in failure and further efforts to investigate them while still imprisoned in fleshy shells had yielded nothing of note.
They existed, but were elusive was the basic conclusion. When in the body they were impossible to detect and when leaving the body they only existed in this world (for want of a better term) for the briefest, brightest of flashes before departing to Parts Unknown.
This was what the helpline had told a nonplussed and already-aware Alex. This was nothing new.
When pressed on whether the Renewal process had brought back their Dad with his soul intact the person on the other end had remained unmoved. Alex had simply been reminded that all efforts to bring back intact souls from Parts Unknown had ended in failure and that to attempt to do so was illegal. The reason being that the ‘failure’ such attempts ended in wasn't so much capital ‘F’ Failure as ALL-CAPS FAILURE. The most supreme failure imaginable.
Which is to say those rare few occasions that someone had successfully brought a soul back from Parts Unknown usually left very few survivors and a lot of property damage. Souls could get angry.

2. Gaining back all the weight lost and then some, and searching for the next shiny new fad diet
I urge you not to be in the latter group. Stick with the truths that you learn here, and use these strategies for LIFE.
Anyone who is successful in ANY endeavor knows that the fundamentals will always work. And in weight loss, the most fundamental truth is that you must burn more calories than you take in, on a consistent basis. Going too high will cause fat gain or a plateau, and going too low will burn up more muscle than fat (giving the "skinny-fat" look) and ruin your metabolic/hormonal processes.
With that being said, I suggest one of the 2 following options (in both options, eat a minimum of 50-75 grams of carbs per day depending on your body size/activity. Smaller body or less activity = less carbs):
1. Jump right into calorie control (not too high and definitely not too low) as outlined in
Chapter 10, or using the bonus Excel calculator.
2. Mix both methods. Start by eating well 6 days a week, and having 1 "cheat day" per
week. Spend a minimum of 4 weeks, and a max of 12 on this, and then jump right into
calorie control. (Option 2 is laid out in the "Quick Start Guide")
[Important Note: I have given the "mix both methods" option since I know many people simply will NOT want to start counting calories right away. This method definitely works and is easy to jump into, but it can get taxing on the body and cause plateaus unless closely monitored. Do not do it for more than 12 weeks without a 1-2 week "diet break". For the best long-term results, I would start right away with counting calories and fat/protein/carbs a la Option 1.]
In any case, let's talk more about the "what to do" part.
My main philosophy for weight control AND feeling sane/happy/enjoying some "treats" is centered around the following:
Remove as many processed foods as you can, and fill the rest with "outdoor treats"
It took me some time to really get this through my head, but it had to be done.
For starters, whether it was low-fat, or sugar-free, or low-carb or whatever other marketing mumbo-jumbo was on the box if it wasn't a natural food, it HAD TO GO.
Anything that had *fake* ingredients got the axe!
I literally threw all the junk out of my cupboard and fridge. This meant all crackers, cookies, soda, bread, pasta, ice cream, chicken nuggets, etc.
And I started from a "blank canvas".
I only kept the simple ONE INGREDIENT FOODS that were in my kitchen. This meant things like frozen chicken/beef/other meat, eggs, olive oil, butter (yes, good ol', delicious butter!), beans, root vegetables and potatoes, rice, etc.!
And I made a pact with myself that I highly suggest you follow too:
Eat as many whole, natural, home-cooked meals as possible, and if, and only if, you are honestly too busy to prepare food, eat outside at some place where you can count calories and protein/fat/carbs. I call these "outdoor treats" since you should be buying them out of the house (meaning there's no junk to binge on inside the house!)
And therein lies one of my personal "secrets" to fat loss.
Kick your own butt as much as you can to cook nutritious meals at home, and if you honestly can't one day? Go to the "big-box" stores that list calories in the store (or if you're ambitious enough, search Google for the store's "Nutrition Facts"). Or go get a junk protein bar (95% of them are filled with unhealthy ingredients). Or hit up some fast food.
I'm serious.
If you don't have a meal prepared, go to McDonald's for all I care (though I seriously try not to, for obvious health/food quality reasons).
But I would much rather you grab junk food (with sufficient protein so you can see attractive, lean muscle when the fat disappears) that you can COUNT AND RECORD, rather than grabbing a tub of pasta or big sandwich at some deli, where you have NO idea how much you're eating.
I see the latter of these situations happen ALL the time, especially in professional settings. (I've worked in corporate finance for 3+ years).
My coworkers, knowing me as the resident "health nut" will say:
"Hey Sayan, I just had this amazing salad from down the block."
Or:
"Yeah, I got some Mediterranean food today. It's really fresh and organic so I know it'll help me lose weight."
Or hundreds of other similar things, primarily based around the MYTH that "just eating healthy" will help you lose weight.
Sorry bucko, but as I've mentioned a few times already, it's just not that simple.
My awesome, yet misinformed, coworkers don't realize that the "amazing salad" contains dressing poured on at the discretion of the salad guy behind the counter. Or that the Mediterranean food contains lots of hummus, rice/pita, and/or meat, which, may technically be "good for you", but cannot be counted and recorded. And thus does not fit with your weight loss goals.
You may have also noticed an interesting phenomenon in most food establishments. The salad guy behind the counter (or food server in general), doesn't seem to exactly like his/her job. Many a time have I said "just give me a few drops of the olive oil" or "put the dressing on the side please", only to have them give me the proverbial "f*ck you" by dousing my salad in probably 5 tablespoons worth of oil (at 140 calories per tablespoon, that's a cool 700 calories of dressing.)
This ruins everything. We already can't count how many calories are in the meal, we don't know how much protein is in the meal, we have no idea how the protein source has been cooked/prepared, and now we have a gazillion calories of oil or dressing to deal with.
No bueno.

9 DAYS NORTHERN CIRCUIT  ROUTE CLIMB

Day: 1 Arrive in Arusha Arrive anytime at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO).Kili Peak Adventure will arrange a private transfer from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). To Arusha at Karama Lodge, where the rest of the day is at leisure. We stay at Karama Lodge, which is beautifully hotel located on the slope of Mt. Meru and is a perfect place to prepare for your trip. We will gather in the hotel for a pre-climb briefing and an equipment check. We will also confirm you have the appropriate mandatory medical coverage and travel insurance. Day 2: Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Elevation (m): 2360m to 2895m, Distance: 6 km, Time: 3-4 hours, Habitat: Montane forest. Drive from the Hotel to Londorossi Park Gate for registration. Our porters prepare and pack the supplies and luggage before we start our ascent along the forest trail to Mti Mkubwa (big tree) campsite at 2895m. We will stay here overnight. Day 3: Mti Mkubwa to Shira Elevation (m): 2895m to 3500m, Distance: 8 km, Time: 5-6 hours, Habitat: Moorland. Our journey continues eastwards across Shira Plateau and Shira Cathedral. We will cross moorland meadow to reach Shira 1 camp for dinner and overnight camping at 3810m. By now we will be able to see, in an easterly direction, the Western Breach with its stunning glaciers. The night here is colder than the previous night & the temperature could possibly go below freezing. Day 4: Shira to Moir Hut Elevation (m): 3500m to 4200m, Distance: 14 km, Time: 5-7 hours, Habitat: Moorland. We leave the forest behind now, the trail gets steeper as it enters the moorland zone. A gentle grade walk takes you across the high altitude Shira Caldera to Shira Cave with fabulous views of Arrow glacier. We will camp here for the night at 4200m. Day 5: Moir Hut via Lava Tower to Barranco Camp Elevation (m): 4200m to 4600m to 3950m, Distance: 12 km, Time: 6-7 hours, Habitat: Semi desert Our route continues on a rocky and rugged eastward path as we ascend to the base of the Lava Tower at 4600m for lunch and acclimatization. This will be our toughest day so far and you may, for the first time, feel the altitude. After lunch we will descend again by almost 650m to the Barranco camp. The high altitude of 4600m at Lava Tower and then descending to sleep will aid acclimatization. Our descent to Barranco camp takes about 2 hours and offers great opportunities to take some beautiful photographs of the Western Breach and Breach Wall. The camp is situated in a valley below the Breach and Great Barranco Wall, which should provide you with a memorable sunset while you wait for your dinner. Day 6: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp Elevation (m): 3950m to 3930m, Distance: 7 km, Hiking Time: 4 hours, Habitat: Alpine Desert. Today starts with a short, but fun, scramble, to the top of the Great Barranco Wall. We then traverse over scree to the Karanga Valley (3930m) beneath the icefalls of the Heim, Kersten and Decken Glaciers. We will stay overnight at Karanga campsite. Day 7: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp Elevation (m): 3930m to 4600m, Distance: 6kms, Hiking Time: 3 hours, Habitat: Alpine Desert We leave Karanga campsite behind to meet the junction connecting with the Mweka descent Trail. From here we continue up to the Barafu Hut. You have now completed the Southern Circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. At camp, we can rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the summit day. The two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo are to be clearly seen from this position. Day 8: Barafu Camp to Summit to Crater Camp  Elevation (m): 4600m to 5895m (and down to 5790m), Distance: 8kms, Time: 7-8 hours, Habitat: Stone scree and ice-capped summit. You will be woken at 07:00 and we will eat a hearty breakfast before starting our summit ascent between the Rebman and Ratzel glaciers. We will head in a north-westerly direction and ascend through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most mentally and physically challenging part of the trek. At Stella Point (5732m), we will stop for a short rest and will be rewarded with the most magnificent views (weather permitting). At Uhuru Peak (5895m), we will have reached the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa. After celebrating with a few summit photos we begin our descent into Kibo Crater to camp for the night. The scenery is breathtakingly unbelievable and depending on the time of year you will see the fast receding glaciers set amidst either sandy, dessert or snowy conditions. Day 09: Kibo Crater to Mweka Camp Elevation (m): 5790m to 3100m, Distance: 12 km, Time: 6-8 hours, Habitat: Stone scree and moorland. From the summit, we descend down to the Mweka Hut camp site, via Barafu for lunch. Trekking poles will be needed for the loose gravel going down to Mweka Camp (3100m). Later in the evening, we will enjoy our last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep. Day10: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate  Elevation (m): 3100m to 1800m, Distance: 10 km, Hiking Time: 3-4 hours, Habitat: Forest. We depart after breakfast descending down to the Mweka Park Gate to receive your summit certificates. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts will be suitable (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy). After receiving your summit certificates the car will be waiting for you at Mweka gate to drive you to your Lodge in Arusha. Day 11: Departure day  After saying bye to our team in operation then you need a Private departure transfer which is included from Arusha to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your flight, unless you have an option to have Safari or any other option we will discuss. LEMOSHO THROUGH BARAFU TO CRATER CAMP is an alternative approach to Uhuru Peak for those wishing a quieter expedition. DAY 1: ARRIVE IN TANZANIA Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), we will pickup you with our private transfer from the Airport to Arusha Safari Lodge. We will gather in the evening for a pre-climb briefing and an equipment check. We will also confirm you have the appropriate mandatory medical coverage and travel insurance. Dinner and overnight at Arusha Safari Lodge: Bed, dinner and breakfast-included. DAY 2: LONDOROSSI GATE TO MTI MKUBWA Elevation (m): 2360m to 2895m, Distance: 6 km, Time: 3-4 hours, Habitat: Montane forest. Drive from the Hotel to Londorossi Park Gate for registration. Our porters prepare and pack the supplies and luggage before we start our ascent along the forest trail to Mti Mkubwa (big tree) campsite at 2895m. We will stay here overnight. DAY 3: MTI MKUBWA TO SHIRA Elevation (m): 2895m to 3500m, Distance: 8 km, Time: 5-6 hours, Habitat: Moorland. Our journey continues eastwards across Shira Plateau and Shira Cathedral. The night here is colder than the previous night & the temperature could possibly go below freezing. DAY 4: SHIRA TO MOIR HUT Elevation (m): 3500m to 4200m, Distance: 14 km, Time: 5-7 hours, Habitat: Moorland. We leave the forest behind now, the trail gets steeper as it enters the moorland zone. A gentle grade walk takes you across the high altitude Shira Caldera to Shira Cave with fabulous views of Arrow glacier. We will camp here for the night at 4200m. DAY 5: MOIR HUT VIA LAVA TOWER TO BARRANCO CAMP Elevation (m): 4200m to 4600m to 3950m, Distance: 12 km, Time: 6-7 hours, Habitat: Semi desert: Our route continues on a rocky and rugged eastward path as we ascend to the base of the Lava Tower at 4600m for lunch and acclimatization. This will be our toughest day so far and you may, for the first time, feel the altitude. After lunch we will descend again by almost 650m to the Barranco camp. The high altitude of 4600m at Lava Tower and then descending to sleep will aid acclimatization. Our descent to Barranco camp takes about 2 hours and offers great opportunities to take some beautiful photographs of the Western Breach and Breach Wall. The camp is situated in a valley below the Breach and Great Barranco Wall, which should provide you with a memorable sunset while you wait for your dinner. DAY 6: BARRANCO CAMP TO KARANGA CAMP Elevation (m): 3950m to 3930m, Distance: 7 km, Hiking Time: 4 hours, Habitat: Alpine Desert. Today starts with a short, but fun, scramble, to the top of the Great Barranco Wall. We then traverse over scree to the Karanga Valley (3930m) beneath the icefalls of the Heim, Kersten and Decken Glaciers. We will stay overnight at Karanga campsite. DAY 7: KARANGA CAMP TO BARAFU CAMP Elevation (m): 3930m to 4600m, Distance: 6kms, Hiking Time: 3 hours, Habitat: Alpine Desert. We leave Karanga campsite behind to meet the junction connecting with the Mweka descent Trail. From here we continue up to the Barafu Hut. You have now completed the Southern Circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. At camp, we can rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the summit day. The two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo are to be clearly seen from this position. DAY 8: BARAFU CAMP TO SUMMIT TO CRATER CAMP Elevation (m): 4600m to 5895m (and down to 5790m), Distance: 8kms, Time: 7-8 hours, Habitat: Stone scree and ice-capped summit. You will be woken at 07:00 and we will eat a hearty breakfast before starting our summit ascent between the Rebman and Ratzel glaciers. We will head in a north-westerly direction and ascend through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most mentally and physically challenging part of the trek. At Stella Point (5732m), we will stop for a short rest and will be rewarded with the most magnificent views (weather permitting). At Uhuru Peak (5895m), we will have reached the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa. After celebrating with a few summit photos we begin our descent into Kibo Crater to camp for the night. The scenery is breathtakingly unbelievable and depending on the time of year you will see the fast receding glaciers set amidst either sandy, dessert or snowy conditions. DAY 9: KIBO CRATER TO MWEKA CAMP Elevation (m): 5790m to 3100m, Distance: 12 km, Time: 6-8 hours, Habitat: Stone scree and moorland. From the summit, we descend down to the Mweka Hut camp site, via Barafu for lunch. Trekking poles will be needed for the loose gravel going down to Mweka Camp (3100m). Later in the evening, we will enjoy our last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep. DAY 10: MWEKA CAMP TO MWEKA GATE Elevation (m): 3100m to 1800m, Distance: 10 km, Hiking Time: 3-4 hours, Habitat: Forest. We depart after breakfast descending down to the Mweka Park Gate to receive your summit certificates. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts will be suitable (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy). After receiving your summit certificates the car will be waiting for you at Mweka gate to pickup you to your lodge in Arusha. The night here is colder than the previous night & the temperature could possibly go below freezing. Day 4: Shira to Moir Hut Elevation (m): 3500m to 4200m, Distance: 14 km, Time: 5-7 hours, Habitat: Moorland. We leave the forest behind now, the trail gets steeper as it enters the moorland zone. A gentle grade walk takes you across the high altitude Shira Caldera to Shira Cave with fabulous views of Arrow glacier. We will camp here for the night at 4200m. Day 5: Moir Hut via Lava Tower to Barranco Camp Elevation (m): 4200m to 4600m to 3950m, Distance: 12 km, Time: 6-7 hours, Habitat: Semi desert Our route continues on a rocky and rugged eastward path as we ascend to the base of the Lava Tower at 4600m for lunch and acclimatization. This will be our toughest day so far and you may, for the first time, feel the altitude. After lunch we will descend again by almost 650m to the Barranco camp. The high altitude of 4600m at Lava Tower and then descending to sleep will aid acclimatization. Our descent to Barranco camp takes about 2 hours and offers great opportunities to take some beautiful photographs of the Western Breach and Breach Wall. The camp is situated in a valley below the Breach and Great Barranco Wall, which should provide you with a memorable sunset while you wait for your dinner. Day 6: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp Elevation (m): 3950m to 3930m, Distance: 7 km, Hiking Time: 4 hours, Habitat: Alpine Desert. Today starts with a short, but fun, scramble, to the top of the Great Barranco Wall. We then traverse over scree to the Karanga Valley (3930m) beneath the icefalls of the Heim, Kersten and Decken Glaciers. We will stay overnight at Karanga campsite. Day 7: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp Elevation (m): 3930m to 4600m, Distance: 6kms, Hiking Time: 3 hours, Habitat: Alpine Desert We leave Karanga campsite behind to meet the junction connecting with the Mweka descent Trail. From here we continue up to the Barafu Hut. You have now completed the Southern Circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. At camp, we can rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the summit day. The two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo are to be clearly seen from this position. Day 8: Barafu Camp to Summit to Crater Camp  Elevation (m): 4600m to 5895m (and down to 5790m), Distance: 8kms, Time: 7-8 hours, Habitat: Stone scree and ice-capped summit. You will be woken at 07:00 and we will eat a hearty breakfast before starting our summit ascent between the Rebman and Ratzel glaciers. We will head in a north-westerly direction and ascend through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most mentally and physically challenging part of the trek. At Stella Point (5732m), we will stop for a short rest and will be rewarded with the most magnificent views (weather permitting). At Uhuru Peak (5895m), we will have reached the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa. After celebrating with a few summit photos we begin our descent into Kibo Crater to camp for the night. The scenery is breathtakingly unbelievable and depending on the time of year you will see the fast receding glaciers set amidst either sandy, dessert or snowy conditions. Day 09: Kibo Crater to Mweka Camp Elevation (m): 5790m to 3100m, Distance: 12 km, Time: 6-8 hours, Habitat: Stone scree and moorland. From the summit, we descend down to the Mweka Hut camp site, via Barafu for lunch. Trekking poles will be needed for the loose gravel going down to Mweka Camp (3100m). Later in the evening, we will enjoy our last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep. Day10: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate  Elevation (m): 3100m to 1800m, Distance: 10 km, Hiking Time: 3-4 hours, Habitat: Forest. We depart after breakfast descending down to the Mweka Park Gate to receive your summit certificates. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts will be suitable (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy). After receiving your summit certificates the car will be waiting for you at Mweka gate to drive you to your Lodge in Arusha. Day 11: Departure day  After saying bye to our team in operation then you need a Private departure transfer which is included from Arusha to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your flight, unless you have an option to have Safari or any other option we will discuss. New Tech Could Turn Algae Into the Climate’s Slimy Savior
Low-power ways to grow algae could lock in carbon dioxide and feed the world

“Those are the kinds of bubbles we want to see,” says Rebecca White, pointing to tiny pockets of gas that are barely visible on the surface of an artificial pond in New Mexico. Their small size means the carbon dioxide she and her colleagues have injected into the water has mostly dissolved, instead of just escaping into the air.
We’re less than a kilometer from the U.S.–Mexican border, surrounded by desert grasslands. It’s one of the last places I’d expect to find a thriving population of marine algae. Yet here in this massive pool swirls more than a million liters of Nannochloropsis, a salt-loving alga that flourishes on the brackish water pumped from below.
Until 1973, long before the algae moved in, farmers grew cotton on this land. Then the well water they were using became so salty that they let the fields go fallow and never planted again. Algae’s ability to prosper in places that would kill most other crops, combined with their astounding nutritional profile, has wooed experts worried about the future of the global food supply.
White, who oversees operations at this 97-acre algae farm and a sister site in Imperial, Texas, for Houston-based Qualitas Health, is familiar with the promise and pitfalls of large-scale algae production. A veteran of algae’s biofuels craze, she worked here in 2012 when a different company spent US $104 million building the farm to produce “green crude.” After three years, crude oil prices tanked, undercutting biofuels, and the facility closed.
The new hope for algae is that they could rebalance the global carbon equation as a food, not a fuel. Despite appearances, algae are an excellent source of protein. If meat-eaters started to eat more algae, the industry’s theory goes, that shift could slash carbon emissions by reducing demand for beef and pork.

Algae could also replace fertilizer-intensive crops such as corn and soy as fillers in processed foods, including fish, pig, and cow feed. With enough algae in human and animal diets, society could avoid planting new fields even as the population increases, and perhaps even allow existing farmland to return to forests, which absorb more greenhouse gases per square kilometer.
There’s one more big reason to let algae seep into the food supply: Though algae are not technically plants, they need CO2 to grow. And to grow large amounts very quickly, farmers must inject CO2 directly into the crop. That means every algae farm doubles as a carbon sponge.
New technologies aim to capture emissions from power plants and pipe them into algae ponds, in a twist on carbon sequestration. One variation of this dream even calls for placing an algae farm next to every coal-fired power plant to ingest the CO2 produced there.
Today, though, algae production is still a boutique industry focused mostly on nutraceuticals and food dyes. Qualitas’s New Mexico farm churns out Nannochloropsis, or “nano,” as White calls it, for omega-3 supplements. With just 48 ponds in production, adding up to about 50 acres, this site nevertheless qualifies as one of the world’s largest microalgae farms.
The algae industry will have to scale up in a big way to deliver the carbon offsets and the protein the world needs. Eventually, producers will also have to persuade food manufacturers that algae deserves to be used in their products—and convince consumers that it belongs on their plates.
But if everything goes according to plan, these microorganisms could reshape the food supply as dramatically as corn and soy have over the past 50 years. And this time, the planet may be better off for it.
Algae represent one of Earth’s oldest life-forms. Algae also constitute some of the world’s simplest organisms. Many species are unicellular and lack advanced structures such as stems, leaves, and petals.
For such tiny organisms, algae already wield an outsize influence on the planet. Consider Prochlorococcus , the smallest and most abundant type of phytoplankton in the ocean, which forms the basis of the marine food chain. “It’s amazing that it does so much with so little,” says Zackary Johnson, a marine biologist at Duke University, in North Carolina.
Now, scientists want to use algae’s superpowers to build a more sustainable food system for land dwellers. Agriculture, forestry, and other land uses (a category defined by [PDF] the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) emit 21 percent of greenhouse gases globally. There is rising tension between the need to clear more land to produce food for more people and the desire to keep global emissions in check.
In theory, algae could ease that tension while also providing high-quality sustenance. Protein composes up to 70 percent of the dry weight of Spirulina and some species of algae. (Like Prochlorococcus , Spirulina is technically not a type of algae—it’s a genus of cyanobacteria, but “we allow them into the club,” says Stephen Mayfield, director of the California Center for Algae Biotechnology at the University of California, San Diego.)

Thanks in part to algae’s high protein content, 1 hectare of algae ponds can generate 27 times as much protein as a hectare of soybeans. And protein from algae is more nutritious than protein from soy, because it contains vitamins and minerals in addition to all the essential amino acids.
Meanwhile, the global demand for protein will more than double by 2050. Setting aside for a moment the question of whether people who wish to eat steak would be willing to take a swig of algae instead, producing the latter could satisfy demand without requiring large tracts of land to be cleared for pastures or crops.
But growing algae has never been an easy affair. Despite algae’s reputation as a fast-proliferating weed, it still takes a lot of electricity and ingenuity to reliably produce large amounts of it. Farms use electricity that’s primarily still generated from fossil fuels to pump water and constantly stir the bubbling mixture. Algae also need some fertilization with nitrogen and phosphorus, the production and application of which generates emissions.
Given all of this, one life-cycle assessment concluded that a protein powder made from algae would be no better than animal protein from a sustainability perspective, and slightly worse than other vegetable-based proteins, such as soy. Another analysis found that while growing algae for food would avoid some future emissions from deforestation, long-term reductions in emissions would be possible only by producing algae-based food and fuels at the same facility.
So for algae to have any measurable impact on emissions, producers must find ways to grow more of it with less. And to sell it at a price palatable to consumers and food companies, they must also lower their own costs. That means finding a cheap supply of CO2. The gas, which to many industries is nothing more than a problematic by-product, is currently Qualitas’s most expensive nutrient.

Dave Hazlebeck believes in the power of technology to help the fledgling algae industry reach its full planet-saving potential. His company, Global Algae Innovations, operates a 33-acre algae farm in Kauai, Hawaii, that doubles as a site to demonstrate dozens of technologies that can grow algae faster with fewer emissions and at a lower cost.
The company’s boldest experiment to date is to divert the flue gases of a nearby coal-fired power plant into their ponds, as the algae’s primary source of CO2. It’s a three-step process: After CO2 is captured with an absorber (akin to a scrubber) that dissolves the gas into recycled water, that carbonated water is stored in covered pools. When the company is ready to grow algae, it pumps the carbonated water into an open pond and inoculates it with one of several algae strains.
Using this method, Hazlebeck says the farm could theoretically capture 90 percent of the CO2 from the plant, which would support up to 1,000 acres of algae. He figures that if the United States stuck an algae farm next to every power plant located in an algae-friendly climate, those farms could sequester 800 million metric tons of CO2, offsetting 198 coal-fired power plants. With that CO2 the farms could produce 400 million metric tons of algae, which is roughly equivalent to how much protein meal the entire world currently makes in a year.
Those figures make a strong case for putting algae everywhere, but White, of Qualitas, isn’t convinced. As soon as I ask her about Hazlebeck’s proposal, she grabs a paper napkin and starts doing her own calculations. To qualify for tax credits for carbon sequestration under a newly proposed bill, a U.S. facility must capture at least 100,000 metric tons of CO2 in a year (a small amount, considering that many coal-fired power plants emit millions of tons of CO2 ).
To find out how much algae it would take to absorb that much CO2, White figures that an algae farm produces about 14.5 metric tons of algae per acre per year—considered the industry standard. To produce 1 kilogram of algae, White’s team uses 2.7 kg of CO2. That means a farm with at least 2,300 acres of algae would have to be built next to each power plant. For comparison, the average U.S. farm today is 440 acres.
White is skeptical that farmers could come up with enough land and water to pull this scheme off—even with algae’s advantage of growing on land and in water that’s not suitable for other crops. “It’s not feasible—it’s aspirational,” she says.
A better solution, she believes, would be to capture CO2 directly from the air, using affordable commercial technology that doesn’t yet exist but which several companies are working on. Power plants could pay to operate direct air-capture systems and give the gas to algae farms as a carbon offset. This would “significantly lower the cost of algae production” by eliminating the need to buy tanks of CO2, White says, and it would create a kind of symbiosis between the two industries.
Raising Algae
On farms such as Qualitas’s, algae grow in large ponds and are harvested all year. This multistep process incorporates techniques from both the biofuels industry and traditional agriculture.

The algae industry has had a lot of false starts. German scientists and employees of Britain’s Imperial Chemical Industries independently began studying algae’s potential as a food source during World War II. Around the same time, Stanford University researchers produced 45 kg of a popular edible type called Chlorella while piloting a concept for an algae production facility.
Needless to say, the idea didn’t catch on. It may have been the taste—one report described Chlorella as having “a vegetable-like flavor, resembling that of raw lima beans or raw pumpkin.” Testers on a flavor panel were less generous—they reported “unpleasantly strong notes,” a “lingering, mildly unpleasant aftertaste,” and a “gag factor.”
Another reason for algae’s stagnancy is that raising microalgae is a relatively new affair. That means many of the technologies that other farmers count on to plant and harvest crops are still being developed for algae. The paddle wheels that stir the Qualitas ponds were custom-built by metalworkers a few towns away.
At Global Algae Innovations, Hazlebeck is trying to change that. The company has invented a drier that he says uses one-tenth of the energy of a typical drier, and ponds that circulate algae with one-third the energy that other farms use for that purpose while producing two to three times as much algae.
Those advances could help the industry reduce its energy use and boost productivity to the point where growing algae proves both profitable and sustainable. The company is now selling the first of its inventions to other algae farms—a harvester that uses one-thirtieth the energy required to remove water from algae compared with traditional processes.

Back at the Qualitas farm in New Mexico, Aaron Smith, a technician who operates the harvester, was wiping off the window of his work station when we stopped by. He’d just pressure washed the entire system the day before, but it was already splattered with bright green goo.
The harvester’s guts are made of long, slim straws with tiny holes only 0.04 micrometers in diameter. The straws fill up with wet algae, and the machine uses pressure to force most of the water through the holes, while the algae remain behind. The design borrows heavily from a system originally developed by General Electric for wastewater treatment plants—one industry where algae have successfully been put to work.
White calls this technology “a massive breakthrough for the industry.” Growers will need more breakthroughs like this one to expand production—she was one of only three people who raised their hands last year at the algae industry’s largest conference, when a presenter asked who there had grown more than an acre of algae.
So how long until algae overhauls our food system? Stephen Mayfield, the UC San Diego algae expert who cofounded the biofuels company that originally built the New Mexico farm, estimates the industry is 10 years from solving the remaining challenges and “hitting that tipping point to where we’re going to replace bulk protein.”
In the eyes of White, who grew up on a cotton farm, the algae industry is finally pointed in the right direction. And, having raised more microalgae in her career than perhaps anyone else in the industry, she has high hopes for where it could lead: “We want to be a part of every meal, every snack, every day.”
