20 things I learned in 2020

1. The only certainty in life is uncertainty.

This is obviously true in the case of, you know, a global pandemic, but even moreso is the way this permeates every aspects of our life on earth. Fundamentally, nothing in certain. No time has ever been ‘precedented’. This year was a reminder of that, but so was clerkship in general. Every month, every new rotation forced me to confront the difficulties I had managing uncertainty. As a person who needs to know EVERYTHING at all times, I was forced to accept that I simple could not know it all in these clinical scenarios. This doesn’t mean it made it any easier to deal with - I still get pretty anxious the night before a new rotation, but I certainly deal with it easier than before.

2. Ask for help.

Ask and so you shall receive! Why stumble around the hospital by yourself, sweating anxiously and checking your watch nervously as the minutes tick by closer to when you’re supposed to be at X or Y destination, when you can ask someone who is (in my experience - literally always) willing to help? Now, I stride in and ask the first person I see where I can find what I am looking for. People want to help - you just need to ask. Whether its for finding something or letting someone you can confide in know that you’re struggling - ask.

3. You are what you do every day.

Aristotle said it best, so I won’t mince his words. What we spend our time doing each day reflects what is valuable and important to us. This year, for the first time in my life, I began to work out for myself and made it a habit. I wasn’t doing it to lose weight, to participate on a team, or for any other reason than for me. I noticed myself get stronger, happier, feel better. I made it a habit to the point where when I don’t do it, I feel off. I didn’t think this was something that was possible for me - rather, that I was destined to a life of just not being an exercise person. But here’s the thing - everyone is and can be an exercise person. You just have to be doing it for the right reasons - for wanting to move your body in a meaningful way each day because thats what makes it feel right. I hope to come to love my body and all it does for me in the coming years. I would lie to say that I love and am truly accepting of it right now, because I know I am not. But I do know that I am treating it a whole lot better than I ever have before.

4. Be vulnerable/STOP PEOPLE PLEASING

Holy fuck --- this !!!!!!!! You do not need to have it all figured out. You do not need to pretend that you are unphased by things or that you are the ~chill~ girl. This does not benefit anyone, and it certainly does not benefit yourself. People want honesty. They want to know how you’re feeling. All you do by shutting that away is harbor negativity and resentment that end up exploding later. I was taught to hide these emotions growing up for whatever reason - shame, embarrassment, whatever - but I will stop doing this. You cannot begin to unpack the why of how you are feeling, and try to achieve more, if you don’t do this. You should be open and raw - tell people why you love them (like when you messaged people you felt grateful for over twitter and facebook last summer) or why you felt badly about things (like you did in your relationship). You deserve to be heard.

5. Take a walk.

The power of going for a walk to clear your headspace and give you time away was truly found this year. Nature is grounding. Fresh air feels like it lifts the weight off your chest. Spend time outdoors - don’t feel badly if you cant - and breathe deeply. Feel the earth against your feet as you propel forward and deal with emotions. Whether it was 5 minutes between virtual clinics or 5 hours walking around when you were upset and in an argument with Felipe, taking a walk was the answer.

6. People like people that they like.

This year, in clerkship, I learned that it is not always important to be the smartest or wisest or wittiest. You dont even have to be smart, wise or witty. You just have to be trying, responsible, likable. A good team player. On most days, being just me, at my baseline, was more than enough. I think this year I realized that I am likeable (or affable) as one of my strengths. It was the CL psych nurses (Karen telling me “you are a star” on my last day and making me tear up on my walk down the hill back to my car parked on Strachlan), or it was the R3 on gen surg (”you have a good energy”) or whoever else. Not necessarily things or fields I knew the most about, but just who I am. And that was nice to hear. Stop the imposter syndrome - you are enough.

7. Non-fiction books can be enjoyable.

Fiction is still better, but there is lots to be learned in a good non fiction.

8. Get comfortable being uncomfortable.

You bawled your eyes out on your birthday morning, at Felipe’s house on James. You sat on the balcony and couldn’t control all the tears that wanted to come out. It was blackout tuesday, and where was the validation that your year MEANT something if it wasn’t shown via birthday posts on instagram? More than this, people ARE DYING IN A GLOBAL PANDEMIC, SARA. And even moreso than that, you were flooded with, dare I say, WHITE GUILT that this was the way you were feeling in the midst of pronounced racial, civil unrest. For the first time, I think you were really confronted - every day, for weeks - with the fact that you were white. You knew this before, of course, but this was blaring at you from every angle, even on your fucking birthday. And here’s the thing - things will never go bac to the way they were, when you were afforded the privilege of being blissfully ignorant and unaware of your race. When it wasn’t something you had to think about, at all, because you were obviously part of the majority and benefiting from your race in innumerable ways each and every day. We’re not going back there. The only way forward is through. Get over your guilt, we’ve got shit to do.

9. External vs. Internal validation

I think this year you really realized how much you depend on external validation to feel valued and confident. I wish for you to see in the coming years how much more you are than just what people tell you. You are bold, brilliant, confident, clever and strong because you are - not because others tell you so.

10. Recognizing my emotional dysregulation

This year, I became a lot more aware of the fact that I emotionally dysregulate and have extreme tempers or profound sadness with a baseline of general bubbly/contentment/joy. Now, it’s going to be all about managing it...

11. Envy/comparison is a thief of joy.

12. You’ll never know if you don’t try.

I am proud of all the ways in which you put yourself out there this year and applied to things. You got rejected - a lot. Whether it was awards and scholarships (OMA ambassador, all the general scholarships through MacMed) or leadership opportunities (where to begin? OMSA day of action lead or even being part of the OMSA day of action), or the million times you vowed that you would not apply for Ontario Regional Director. There were so many times that week you wanted to quit - to not write a script, to not attend a zoom session, to pull out even when you just saw the competition - but you didn’t. You learned a lot, you practiced giving a zoom speech, and you chatted with some interesting people. You lost the election, but you personally did not lose anything. While at that time it was a tough pill to swallow, here you are. Now you have more time to dedicate to your YWCA partnership, and isn’t that a beautiful thing after all?

13. Stop putting things off - do them right away!

Still working on it lol.

15. Being a good friend/girlfriend/daughter is a skill.

Noone ever tells you, I feel, that having strong, close relationships is hard work. You can’t just sit idly by. You also can’t expect that giving a gift or saying some nice words is enough. Especially in a year of social distancing - you had to get creative. Face times, flowers delivered, watching netflix simultaneously on the extension with Felipe (money heist anyone?), zoom hang outs, picnics at Oakville lakeshore, scheduling monthly hang outs with Sharon.. relationships are about making the time and investing into it like you would with anything else. You don’t necessarily have to be doing fancy things like this either - but emotional intimacy is important and necessary, too.

16. If you’re not doing it because you love it, it won’t give you any contentment.

All the extracurriculars in the world don’t matter if they dont make you tick.

17. The opportunity for learning/gratitude is everywhere.

Whether its from patients sitting right in front of you (listen to them, always), podcasts, or anywhere else. There are opportunities to learn all around you. Likewise, there are always, ALWAYS things to be grateful for. Take a moment to pause and think about what you learned or are grateful for in a day. There is always something.

18. You’re actually really good at procedures.

Why did you think you weren’t? Were you indoctrinated to believe that only men were good with their hands? Regardless... don’t be nervous. You’re good at them!

19. Routine, good nights of sleep are not overrated. Not at all.

20. Residents are the unsung heroes of the medical student experience. They make or break a rotation, and influence it more than any other factor. Future Sara you better be a fucking good resident to your med students.

Honourable mention goes to this awesome moment this year that I almost forgot happened, but thankfully tweeted about - “No better way to spend International Women’s Day than on the Labour & Delivery floor witnessing the strength, power & tenacity of mama’s in labour! First delivery of the day - unmedicated () with a beautiful baby girl joining the world!”

Another honourable mention to coming together with a fun crew to create COVIDreview, which unexpectedly got lots of media attention and praise but, most of all, was a fun way to get to know people in my class that I didn’t normally speak to.

On other notes, I will cherish the fact that I got to spend 3 months in my parents home with them for the first time in many, many years. We watched movies, did yoga, baked (a LOT), and went for many, many, repetitive walks. I love them more than words can describe and cannot imagine a life without my parents (and my brother). My family is everything.

I am also very appreciate to be in a relationship with Felipe that is constantly pushing me to be better and to recognize things about myself I didn’t know (or didn’t want to know). These things sometimes upset me, but ultimately I recognize they are important for my growth and leading me into becoming more of who I want to be. I am learning so much about myself, what I need and want in a partner, and how to communicate more effectively to convey these things (versus not communicating this at all in the past). Things aren’t always easy but I cherish the moments that happened this year (starting the year off travelling Arizona with him, meeting his sister/niece/nephew, him meeting my family, coming to Blue Mountain, going on an impromptu trip to Niagara, all the biking expeditions, going to Stratford for his birthday!!). I also must (MUST!!!!!) stop comparing my relationships to others.

Overall, I find it ironic that the year marked by a GLOBAL PANDEMIC is the year where I was finally forced to stop, pause, and prioritize my health. My physical health, in building a habit for fitness that finally stuck, my emotional health in learning to recognize what I want in relationships and *starting* to ask for it/be vulnerable, and my mental health in taking the time for sleep, walks, and meditation (sometimes more than others). Lets continue to take these lessons into 2021.

Of Benders and Bonding Chapter 1

Roman didn't know how Patton convinced Logan to check out the circus with them. Okay that was kind of a lie. Patton probably used his puppy eyes, blinked a few times and said “please” in a childish manor. It seemed Logan could not resist the puppy eyes. Of course Roman couldn't either. It would be like kicking a puppy and Roman liked puppies. But yeah, the three of them were sitting in the stands of a circus. Patton was going on and on about buying candy and a few other things for the kids he looked after at home. “Im sure they would like some candy. Of course I would like candy too. Can we buy a lot of candy so everyone can have some?”

“Patton we're too far away from home. By the time we got home the candy would be expired. Plus you and the children don't need as much as you're saying.” Logan said while pinching the bridge of his nose.

“Well there's a post office in town! We can box it up and have it send through express mail!” Patton said.

“Patton, as much as a fantastic idea that is, I doubt we can pay for express mail. Perhaps when we do some work and collect some bounties we can send the children candy from one of the shops?” Roman said. He didn't like having limits but sadly money was one of them.

“But Roman it's circus candy! Circus candy is different than regular candy! Its more fun!” Patton said.

“I don't think there Is a difference.” Logan chimed in.

“Well candy from festivals and circuses do seem more special.” Roman thought.

“Exactly! And my- I mean the children definitely deserve some special candy. It may not erase whatever they've gone through but it might add some joy! Plus who doesn't like candy?” the air bender said.

The earth bender raised his hand.

“I thought we were friends Logan! Best friends!” Patton cried. He sounded like he was betrayed.

Just then someone dropped a small bag into Patton's lap. Roman looked up to see a person in a black hooded jacket start to walk away. “Sir you dropped this!” Patton called out.

“Keep it.” the stranger called back as he went through a small guarded door.

Roman turned to the other two and shrugged.

“Perhaps he heard us talking. Maybe next time we should be a bit quieter.” Logan said as he examined the bag's contents. From the clinking sound, the fire bender could guess it was coins.

“Oh what a nice guy! I hope we can find him and thank him!” Patton said.

Soon the lights dimmed and a spotlight shown on the ringmaster. The old man greeted everyone and told them the typical “you will be amazed” speech. Roman was honestly a bit excited to see what would be going on. Perhaps he could draw inspiration from it for his drawings and stories.

“Oh! Also I forgot to mention this. There's a villain who wants to take over this circus! If you spot him let us know. He wears all black and has a thundercloud on him!”

Roman rolled his eyes slightly. This man was a poor script writer and his acting wasn't all that good. However the crowd seemed invested. The first act was the “hero” of the circus and he was the strong man. Next was a man and woman who were animal tamers. Then a few acrobats of both genders did things such as tight rope walking and the trapezes. Roman found himself slightly interested in the other firebenders who juggled things like flaming batons and flaming swords. Seriously the blades were on fire. Patton was cheering when one of them spat out fire near the crowd. Roman glanced over at Logan, who was reading a book. The earth bender could care less. Finally after the last act the Ringmaster came into view again.

“That was our wonderful circus! I h-”

The lights dimmed. The Ringmaster acted confused as he looked around. Roman internally cringed as the Ringmaster pretended to panic. However he was focused on silk lowering from the ceiling. Then a hooded figure was behind the ringmaster and there was smoke. When the smoke cleared the stranger from earlier was in center stage. The Ringmaster was “gagged” and in a cannon. How did Roman not notice the cannon?

“Roman! It's the guy from earlier!” Patton whisper yelled.

The unknown person pulled the jacket off of himself dramatically and crossed his arms. On his skin tight gymnastics leotard was a thundercloud.

“Fools. You thought Strongman could find me? Fat chance. This is my circus now!”

Roman had to admit, this guy's acting was better than everyone who had performed. Patton was very interested. He kept saying “oh my goodness, oh my goodness”.Logan lifted a brow and looked from his book.

“Now witness the last act you will ever take part in Ringmaster. Strongman can't save you now.”

The villain then snapped and music came on. It was obvious his act was aerial silks now. The man slipped off his shoes and began climbing the dark purple silk. He would wrap it around himself and fall, spin, do the splits in mid air and so many other things. And the whole time he was doing it in a slightly seductive or memorizing manor. It was almost like pole dancing, minus the pole. He was incredibly flexible and oddly attractive. Roman was sure under all that dark eye shadow and white foundation there was a nice guy underneath. However every hero story needed a villain.

“Oh wow! He's really good! I can't do the splits!” Patton said.

After one last spin and a drop the man got down from the silk ropes and the music stopped. The crowed cheered at the performance.

“See Ringmaster? They're cheering the loudest for me! My powers are working on them.”

The villain then walked over to the cannon and stood next to it. A smirk spread on his face.

“For my encore I will send this man into the sky. He will be shot from this cannon and will never be seen again!”

As the villain laughed maniacally “Strongman” came.

“Not if I can help it Doctor Gloom! You may be flexible and smart, but there is one thing you do not have!” Strongman said.

“What is that you boar?”

“Super strength!”

With that Strongman picked Doctor Gloom up and carried him offstage. Everyone laughed and cheered as the villain kicked and pounded the man's back in an effort to free himself. After the two were gone the ringmaster got out of the cannon and took off his gag.

“Doctor Gloom may be scary but he isn't good at tying knots. Anyways thank you for visiting our circus! We hope to see you again soon!”

The crowd made their way out of the exits. However Patton didn't want to leave yet.

“We still have to thank Doctor Gloom! Plus he was cool and I want to ask how he could do the splits without it hurting.”

“Well he went backstage where patrons like us cannot go. Lets just go to the hotel room and end the day.” Logan said as he closed his book.

“Nonsense Logan! That man did a good deed and must be thanked! Plus his acting skills were better than everyone's! I must let him know he was a good villain.” Roman said, agreeing with Patton.

“The guards aren't there Logan? Pleeeaaase?”

Puppy eyes.

“Fine. No more than five minutes. Then we are out.”

Patton cheered and immediately ran towards the backstage curtain. Roman laughed and followed, leaving Logan protesting and having to follow. They carefully looked around to see if anyone saw them. Luckily they weren't noticed, so they entered. Patton let the way down the hall where a large amount of light was coming from a room. They peeked in and saw Strongman and Doctor Gloom talking.

“Virgil you needed that money! You needed it to get out of here! No person deserves to be owned!”

“Chill. Those people needed it more than I do. Besides I'll be fine.”

“But-”

Just then the Ringmaster entered through another entrance.

“Bai can you give Virgil and I a moment? Thank you.”

Strongman looked at Virgil (Doctor Gloom) for a moment and left. After he left, all hell broke loose.

“Boy I didn't buy you off of your father for lousy performances!” the Ringmaster said.

“Whatever. Slavery is against the law. All I have to do is tell someone and you'll be gone.” Virgil said, a frown on his face.

“You wouldn't dare. You have nowhere else to go. Besides what place would allow blood benders to work and live? You'll be alone until you die. Maybe if you were lucky you'd land a job as a prostitute. I own you Virgil. You cant do shit.”

“You dont own m-”

Virgil suddenly fell to the floor holding his cheek. The Ringmaster then kicked him hard. That was enough for Roman. He got up and rushed in. He stood protectively over Virgil and pointed his sword at the Ringmaster.

“You will not lay another hand on this man understood? You will let everyone you bought go and turn yourself in. If not I will have to harm you.” Roman said, his expression becoming more firm.

“Who the hell are you? What does that matter no one will believe you.”

Logan then stood up and walked in ever so calm and collected. However his face was stern, borderline intimidating.

“I would listen to him. He and the emperor of the Fire Nation are close. As many military and government authorities and I.” Logan said.

The Ringmaster was quiet now. Patton came in and helped Virgil up and held him protectively. Like a brother protecting his sibling from a bully. The only reason why the dark strange performer wasn't running away was because he was too stunned.

“I call bullshit.”

“Well then I assume you shall wait until authorities come and break up your circus? Have it your way.”

“We'll be taking Virgil somewhere better than this. Shame on you. I hope you never sleep well ever again.” Patton said. To be honest that was a pretty intense thing to come from the air bender.

The group made their way out the back, Roman keeping vigilant just in case the Ringmaster came after them. When they were out Virgil fell to his hands and knees. He was shaking and if one looked closely one might see tears.

“What do you guys want from me? I don't have anything else to give to you.” he said. “That's a rude thing to say to your heroes.” Roman said.

“You were having a serious problem so we fixed it. Easy as that.” Logan added while pushing his glasses up.

Then Patton spoke. “Virgil is it? Hi I'm Patton. The guy in green is Logan and the guy with the sword is Roman. We wanted to help you.”

“I could've helped myself.” Virgil grumbled. Tears were still falling.

“Well looks like you got out early. Here, we'll follow you to get your things and take you to our hotel room. We'll let you eat, have a shower, rest and then you can do what you want. You can leave and do your own thing if you want. Go back to your family if you have any, chase any dreams you have..”

Virgil seemed to tense at that. However Patton continued.

“If you don't know then maybe you can travel with us until you know! We'll visit other places so there might be somewhere you want to be. The world is big you know!”

Virgil looked up with Patton and blinked.

“That...sounds nice.”

oh golly gosh i didnt really expect anyone to respond to this so i guess ill explain whats goin on also im just gonna vomit type and ignore the read more because 1. im on mobile and 2. this is my blog ive been writing for more than half my life, believe it or not fan fiction all the way back when i was a lot younger. i used to write invader zim fan fiction and it was my real first fandom that made me look into everything it had to offer its impossible for me to think that i havent improved atleast a little bit since then, but i feel as though in the 3 years times ive truly dedicated myself to writing i havent really improved too much. all my destiel pieces look like my overwatch pieces and it sucks to see yourself stuck in one place for so long. thats really the meat of the problem: i know what it takes to make a good story but i cannot execute it. its clear as day in my head but i absolutely detest my own writing to the point that i want to delete it all and erase any evidence that i wrote. most recently, my fic has gotten the most reads of anything ive ever made and has eaten up the most time, since i started scripting it out in late September. back when i updated weekly, i did it to keep the most people engaged and get as many reads as possible. now i cant even look at the chapters because they seem so shoddy and poorly executed. its a bad fic and now the pressure to keep people happy is on me like never before and its exhausting. i want to give out good content but everything I write i hate and im absolutely sick of it. ive been told people like my reading and i million other people could tell me that but i hate it so much and it makes me sad and angry to do it so i figured why do i keep doing it? i have so many ideas to express and no way to do it. i cant draw, i cant write, i dont have enough followers for people to give a shit about what i have to say, no one irl likes what i like. it makes me wanna scream im just so stuck and have been for the past three years. writing is destroying me and i dont want to do it anymore. ill update my fic because i promised and only because i promised but after that i dont know what ill do.

Why should I have to pay for your health insurance?

Second, can the responsible party pay out the amount that is agreed upon and then expect to get the victims (my) car in return? Or is his considered extortion? Cause there is no f-in way I the person who is not responsible for the accident can find a reliable car for 1500 bucks, but could part out, or retire my car, sell my car and get more plus the 1500 she agreed upon. OK Wow my alliance arent snakes and im alive! the vote went exactly how it was supposed to go! Nayeli went home and so did her idol! So now I know that the dragons alliance (Emily, Amanda, Will and I) are a solid 4 person majority! Which means were most likely going to make it to merge knock on wood! My torch is pretty lit (so punny) so I'm really happy! The other tribe getting a disadvantage in the next challenge is iconic tbh so wig! Francie having her person challenge advantage is scary because I think she's already good at challenges so I have to watch out for that. Amanda Lynn getting the power to talk to a voted out person is honestly the only thing I would want. I would love to be able to talk to like raf because I don't think I am allowed to anymore since he's out of the game and I'm still in. This is a good challenge just bc of the cause it's going to. Honestly, I can't stop laughing about the "buy yourself out of the auction" and the useless torch items from last night. Also, re: actual strategy and stuff, apparently Nayeli and Michael were somewhat a duo for some time before the tribe swap. I'm glad Nayeli is gone because it breaks up that alliance there.

My only plan for this fake idol right now is to wait until a major move needs to be made, and then lure someone into trusting me and give them the "idol" to play at a tribal council where - in reality - they'll be blindsided. There's plenty of people in this game right now who are big targets that trust me enough to where that would work - realistically I shouldn't have told Abbey but that shows her that I trust her 100% right now and that's what I need at the moment. If I had to take out any of old Espirito (besides Abbey) at any point, I could probably do it with this - Ruthie, Mo, or Amanda G especially, I can see them being big social threats post-merge - but I could also pass it along and convince someone to give it someone else. Regardless it gives me a bit of power right now and I like it.

Amanda and I have been talking today we've convinced Mo and Bryce to vote Ashley. Everything seemed to be going well but then Ruthie told the Feminism chat that Mo and Bryce were planning on voting Ash. Who told Ruthie??????? (shit??)

At this point you have to wonder what Ashley is doing telling people who's names are up that they're up bc it's messy. On the bright side, now Michael is considering voting Ash. We didn't try to get him to vote for her before because last time we brought up her name Michael tried to talk us out of it so he might have some kind of connecting with Ash. However, he's considering voting for her now (or he's playing us in the chat) so maybe it'll work out?

Michael randomly is seeking drama which is a choice... I just let him know what Ashley told me and he tries to make it seem like I'm hiding things from him when she literally didn't give me a name...

Mo VS Bryce.... HMMMM. I would rather Mo stay but i don't want my alliance to think that I'm like... being too pushy about it so I'm happy to just sit back and vote whoever they want. I'm a bit nervous for Espirito's tribal because Bryce is still on that tribe. I really hope he isn't on the outs and that he makes it out alive tonight. I think we're going to merge after tonight, so I hope nothing bad happens to him.

I am so paranoid but im trying the fun method of ignoring my problems and pretending they dont exist!! Also amanda Lynn and her fear of idols is really messing with me because she doesnt want me to tell anyone other than mo and francie that im voting ashley but thats problematic because ruthie and michael want to know JKDSFHFKS. maybe im being played!

God, I hope tonight is the merge. Also, I'm praying that Bryce stays tonight!!! I think he will be fine because he's very under the radar, but I'm still very nervous! :0 I just don't want my game to blow up but... I feel like it'll happen soon especially because Gwen is planning on exposing Amanda Lynn soon with all of her alliances and whatnot. How did Gwen figure out that Amanda Lynn was leaking all her information? Me. I'm literally such a rat dkjfa;fdjs I-I can't handle myself. My heart is in my stomach right now. I'm so nervous about this twist, I'm hoping that it's merge so Emily and I can be reunited with Bryce. I really hope that we can get together and dominate until final 3.

LAST WORDS: I have no clue what happened more than likely someone is lying so I was rudely voted out for no reason. All I wanted was one more week then I would have gladly sit back and let them fight it out. I'm proud of myself tho cause it was a struggle from day 1. Idk why this game is so crazy but I have never had a game like this. I had stress and anxiety from start so I had to work extra hard and I'm just done with the game. I'm all for being a snake or engineering a blindside but you can't play in a game where you can't trust anyone. I literally had no one I could trust for the entire game. Ruthie is loyal but I wasn't working with her until we were forced to. Once we separated I felt better knowing I could play my own game without rumors swirling. Honestly I really am disappointed in the game overall because I really couldn't play a normal game I'm used to where I strategize and make allies and big moves cause I was too busy trying to keep myself out of target. Too many people switching their minds and flip flopping make the game messy and while I don't mind messy it way too early. Jury phase hits then yeah let's get messy but prejury is too early for that. At this point I think Ruthie and will are only ones that deserve to be in the game cause they are playing well unlike the rest who just follow along and don't know how to make their own choices. I can't respect the snakes that flat out lie to you either which there are several of. Being a snake is one thing but what they are doing is rude and not game play. It's taking it personal and I have absolutely no respect for that.
