  Hello, my friends! It’s wonderful to be back here with a new “Interior Design Ideas” post. Today, I will be featuring a beautiful home designed by the talented The LifeStyled Company (Recently featured on Home Bunch here: New Desert Home).

This home was certainly designed with family life in mind. Each and every room feels warm, inviting and unpretentious. As you browse this post, you will find a home that feels elegant with a neutral color scheme and ideas that should inspire and hopefully leave you feeling relaxed.

Rachel and Marco posted their home renovation project on Sweeten to find a match who could rework their two-floor duplex in Manhattan. The kitchen was the biggest update of the renovation. They chose a professional stove that they loved and matched their kitchen cabinets to the almost-black finish. This made their next choice easy: Offset the black oven with brighter gold accents. They did this by weaving gold through the cabinet hardware, as well as in the base of the elongated kitchen table. 

Jennifer and Joe hired a Sweeten contractor to help them reconfigure their closed-off kitchen area in their New Jersey apartment. With views of the Manhattan skyline, the room needed a sophisticated update. To do this, they installed dark cabinets and white marble countertops. Allyson, an avid traveler, purchased a circa-1920s home in Brooklyn knowing it needed to be renovated. She posted her project on Sweeten and was matched with a general contractor who replaced her bathroom with a more modern one. Allyson had collected artwork from around the world, so she wanted to make sure her love of culture was reflected in the ultimate design—and it was. Bringing rich, gold-bronze hues was one way to do so. She had brass-rod inlays laid into the custom floor.  And she sourced gold-brass sinks from Australia and installed similarly hued sconces. 

Leah had already been through a kitchen renovation when she turned to Sweeten for her next project: her bathroom. She wanted to replace the frumpy 1970s aesthetic with a more contemporary design. The rip-and-replace renovation didn’t take long, and it came out better than she thought. Originally she planned to incorporate white and silver tones, but at the last minute decided to add a touch of warmth by using gold fixtures.

Jenifer and Mitzie knew as soon as they looked at their Brooklyn apartment (located in the desirable DUMBO section of the borough) that it was a good fit—despite its need for renovation. While they hired a Sweeten contractor to overhaul their kitchen and baths (which turned out beautifully!) perhaps the most eye-catching redesign was the entry. The apartments’ entrance features bold wallpaper in a gold hand foil.

When sisters Deanna and Daria found a one-bedroom apartment in Manhattan’s Sutton Place, they jumped at the chance to buy it. They then enlisted a Sweeten contractor to reimagine the space to meet their needs. Their style is surprisingly traditional, with a Chinoiserie influence and characterized by a bold pattern and color choice. This is on full display in their dining room: it is a mix of gold-hued wallpaper, a sparkly gold chandelier, and even a gold picture frame.

Interior designer Tara Benet was brought in to help a couple update their three-bedroom apartment in the I.M. Pei-designed Kips Bay tower in Manhattan. The kitchen had already been renovated a few years back, so the focus was on the living and dining rooms. Benet chose a white color palette for the living room—one that she could complement with deep, rich blues and spicier gold tones. Gold hues are reflected throughout the room in the coffee table, woven in the pillows, and throughout the lamps and light fixtures.

Tatianna asked her daughter, Alissa, who has a background in fashion, to help her reimagine the look of her new apartment. They hired a Sweeten contractor to do the labor but sourced all the materials themselves. The renovation result is a beautiful 975-square-foot condo. “My mom is very stylish and vibrant so we wanted to create a bright, airy contemporary space to match her style,” said Alissa. “We went for neutral gray tones with splashes of color.” The calming gray walls of the living room provide a backdrop that’s stylishly accessorized with gold-toned finishes and brass furniture.

I am happy to be featuring Liz Hackett of @lizhackettinteriors‘ newly-built home on our “Beautiful Homes of Instagram” series. Liz’s home feels airy and stress free and, as the years go by, I think we should make of our home a place that brings us peace. I feel that when my house is clean, uncluttered, and organized, my mind is calmer and I can think clearer. This home is exactly like that; a place anyone would feel better, not only because you’re so close to nature, but also because the house itself feels uncomplicated and that, my friends, is the approach that we should be aiming for.

Hello! My name is Liz and I live with my husband and 3 kids in Asheville, NC in the Blue Ridge Mountains. We built our modern farmhouse one year ago on a quiet wooded lot. My husband is a local home builder and I work in interior design. We designed and built this house together and have created a place we are happy to call home.

Home Ideas

“Our goal for this house was to incorporate the modern farmhouse aesthetic with both classic and modern details.”

Exterior Paint Color

The exterior body and trim is Benjamin Moore Classic Gray.

Porch flooring is Benjamin Moore Amherst Gray.

Home-Sweet-Home

“I wanted our home to feel comfortable, liveable and inviting.”

Windows

Windows are Mira by Plygem and are black metal clad exterior and wood interior.

Front Door

What a brave guardian dog! 🙂 The front door paint color is “Benjamin Moore Black”.

Foyer

Every part of this 3500 square foot house gets used daily and there are no wasted spaces. We gave a lot of thought to making sure that function and style were both foremost in the design.

Wall Paint Color

Paint on main walls of house beside shiplap are “Benjamin Moore Classic Gray”.

Farmhouse-inspired

The front porch and the foyer features 100+ year-old barnwood shiplap from Kentucky.

The chevron barn door (similar here) is painted in “Benjamin Moore Chelsea Gray”.

Built-ins

Built-ins in front Hall are “Benjamin Moore HC 168 Chelsea Gray”.

Space

 The house is 4 bedroom, master down, 3 1/2 baths plus a flex space between the first and second floor.

Kitchen

This is one of the most beautiful kitchens I have seen in a while. Beautiful white cabinets are complemented by real beams and shiplap walls.

Sconces are Boston Sconce – similar here, here & here.

Countertop

Countertops are Carrara Honed Marble and backsplash is Shiplap, made from custom milled 7 1/4″ Poplar boards.

Cabinet Hardware: Colonial Bronze – similar Pulls & Knobs.

Open Shelves: Custom – similar here.

Cabinetry

Kitchen Cabinets are inset poplar Frosty White by Crystal Cabinets- one of their custom colors. We color matched all of our trim and shiplap to match the cabinets. I would say it is very similar to BM White Dove.

Faucet: Champagne Bronze Delta Trinsic faucet.

Sink: Kohler.

Beams

Kitchen has four 100+-year-old wood beams that were reclaimed from an old tobacco barn in Kentucky.

Hardwood Flooring

Wood floors throughout the main house are 4″ white oak with a stain of 2 parts Early American and 1 part Classic Gray custom mix. Done in a satin water-based finish.

An 1888 Victorian with eight bedrooms and nine bathrooms in two units; a two-bedroom, two-bathroom carriage house; and a one-bedroom, one-bathroom cottage; on a 0.79-acre corner lot

This house, known as Gray Gables, was built in redwood as a private residence. It was later incorporated into the grounds of the Wissahickon Inn, once a stopping place for notables like Gloria Vanderbilt and Eleanor Roosevelt on their way to Palm Springs, 45 miles southeast. (Los Angeles is 66 miles west.) After falling into disrepair and almost being razed, the property was restored, beginning in 2016, as a family complex, with a rebuilt foundation, new mechanicals and antique and period reproduction details. It is in a historic district two miles south of the city center.

Size: 3,600 square feet (in the main house)

Price per square foot: $499

Indoors: A 2,000-square-foot veranda with intricate woodwork based on the original wraps around three sides of the main house. Inside are engineered hardwood floors (as well as sculpted carpet in the first-floor bedroom) and 10-foot ceilings in most rooms.

The living room has eight-foot-high casement windows with bronze bolts and a Victorian reproduction bronze globe chandelier and wall sconces. Down the hall is a dining room with an arched ceiling, acorn chandelier and Dutch door. It opens to an eat-in kitchen with marble-topped bead-board cabinets, a white subway tile backsplash, a cast-iron sink and cast-iron light fixtures. The six-burner gas cooktop and electric convection oven are set in a reproduction antique stove.

The first-floor bedroom suite includes a Victorian chandelier suspended from an 11-foot ceiling and a large closet with custom shelves. The private bathroom, with its open shower, is ADA-compliant.

The original staircase has been stained to match the flooring. Decorated with globe and acorn finials, it is lit by a vintage pendant lamp.

The three upstairs bedrooms include a master suite with cathedral windows offering mountain views and a bathroom with a penny-round-tiled shower, a toilet closet with a bidet and a reproduction Victorian vanity with a double sink and an antique mirror. There is also a guest suite, a bedroom with a gable window, an office with an industrial pendant light and a hall bathroom with a claw-foot tub and an industrial pipe light fixture with Edison bulbs. The second floor contains a laundry room with a gas-dryer hookup, as well.

A second unit of about 1,700 square feet with a private entrance occupies the basement. It has three bedrooms, three and a half bathrooms, a living room with French doors that open to a front patio and a kitchen with white Shaker cabinets and granite countertops.

Also on the property are a two-bedroom, two-bathroom carriage house that is approximately 1,100 square feet on two floors and an 800-square-foot cottage with one bedroom and one bathroom.

Outdoor space: Wrought-iron fencing encircles the property and incorporates an electric driveway gate. The grounds are planted with roses, bougainvillea, cypress, lavender bushes and orange, apricot and loquat trees. There are three notable mature specimen trees: a live oak, a pine and a palm. The yard includes statuary and a bocce court.

San Francisco | $1.795 Million

A 1916 clapboard cottage with three bedrooms and one bedroom, on a 0.06-acre lot

From the front porch and upper floor of this house on Portrero Hill, you can see downtown San Francisco and the bay. Across the road is a park with a baseball field, playground and recreation center. Schools, shops, restaurants, breweries and groceries are in the immediate neighborhood, as are train and bus service to downtown. Routes 101 to the west and 280 to the east facilitate commuting to Silicon Valley.

Size: 1,457 square feet

Price per square foot: $1,232

Indoors: The main level has hardwood floors and shiplap-paneled walls and ceiling. On the right side, as you face the back, is a living room with a bay window and built-in bookshelves, followed by an open dining area. Both rooms (and the rest of the home) have been freshly painted and include new lighting.

Immediately to the left is a guest bedroom. Beyond it are a staircase (a walk-in closet built under the stairs serves as a pantry) and a U-shaped kitchen with grooved cabinets and white-tile countertops and backsplashes. Finally, there is a room leading out to the back that could be used as a study, guest quarters or music room.

The two upstairs bedrooms include a guest room facing front and a master with French doors opening to a private balcony overlooking the backyard. The single bathroom is on the main floor and has wood-paneled walls and cabinets, red-tile floors, a pedestal sink and a claw-foot tub with a shower head.

The lower level includes a garage with parking for one large car or two small ones and a bonus room, reached from outside, that could be used as a studio or yoga room.

Outdoor space: The backyard includes a concrete seating area and a garden with mature lemon and lime trees and a large Norfolk pine. The driveway offers parking for two additional cars, side by side.

Los Angeles | $1.795 Million

A midcentury-modern house built in 1958, with three bedrooms and two bathrooms, on a 0.3-acre lot

This home is in upper Benedict Canyon, in the Beverly Hills Post Office district (with a 90210 ZIP code). The area is a 16-mile drive from downtown Los Angeles and is fringed with nature and its creatures (owls, coyotes and the occasional bobcat). It is two miles below Mulholland Drive and close to a number of hiking trails.

Size: 1,530 square feet

Price per square foot: $1,173

Indoors: Marvin Beck, a local architect, designed the house for himself and his wife. A later owner opened the kitchen to the living room and installed two sets of accordion-fold glass doors in back to dissolve the boundary between interior and exterior. The current owner renovated the master bathroom last year, using slate tile on the walls and a Carrara marble vanity top.

The front door (reached by an exterior flight of stairs) is clad in tongue-and-groove slats that are echoed inside, starting with a floating closet in the foyer that has no visible hardware and opens with a push.

The living room includes a skylight, a wall of built-in drawers and shelves and a fireplace with a combed-basalt surround and hearth. The millwork is echoed in a low partition wall and in the cabinetry in the adjacent kitchen. The golden color is offset by royal blue Viking appliances, patterned glass backsplash tile and honed black granite countertops.

The master is the only room in the house that does not have direct access to the outdoors. It does have book-matched paneled walls and a mirrored closet extending across the entire length.

The guest bedroom has a slatted closet with invisible hardware that runs the length of one wall; it has use of a bathroom with a clerestory window and a walk-in shower faced in the original buttercup-yellow tile. A third bedroom was converted into an open den. Sliding-glass doors in both guest rooms lead to the backyard.

The lower level includes a one-car garage, laundry area and storage.

Outdoor space: The flat, spacious property (unusual in this hilly area) is landscaped with plants that attract hummingbirds and butterflies. A brick patio beyond the folding-glass doors is partially covered by a latticed canopy. Stone-and-gravel paths lead to seating areas in the terraced gardens.

3 Modern Minimalist Homes with Chinese Design Elements

Modern minimalism is moving into Chinese markets faster than ever. The growth of this movement offers a unique chance to see two very distinct styles intersect – vibrant design traditions interpreted through the keen lens of contemporary frameworks. This post explores three home interior concepts by prolific designers based in China, each one blending subtle traditional elements across a chic minimalist canvas. All three homes demonstrate a different approach, some with clear roots in Chinese design and others with the most understated of influences. Which one is your favorite?

Designer: Gray Vision    Visualizer: Gray Vision    The first home is the work of Beijing-based Gray Vision. White surfaces and clean lines set the stage, diverging from the typical minimalist aesthetic thanks to creative treatments like a textural backlit wall panel and sophisticated built-ins throughout. Décor bounces between casual touches like the pouf and playful throw pillows and high-end pieces like the round coffee tables from the Bell Collection by Sebastian Herkner.

Combining major social areas into one, the open living space embraces guests with its bright and welcoming atmosphere.

Enjoying a prime spot by the windows is a handsome tea table, outfitted with two large cushions and a spacious low table. Elegant indoor plants flank the arrangement on either side. In a home defined by its ultra-modern style, this area retains the influence of Chinese tradition.

On the table, classic meets contemporary and east meets west. The unique teapot is the work of Stockholm-based designer Anna Lerinder.

Elegant built-ins extend across the other side of the living space as well. This one adds a dash of color.

The dining room pendant light is the iconic Artichoke design by Poul Henningsen, a distinctive piece to counterbalance the minimalism of the round dining table below it.

Stylish swivel chairs continue the theme.

A galley kitchen occupies a secluded space set apart from the social areas. A stainless-steel backsplash adds a professional touch, softened by the addition of marble floors – both elements working together to create a sophisticated grey and white kitchen theme.

Storage is abundant. A mix of enclosed drawers and cabinets keep items neat and tidy while open niches offer at-a-glance access for everyday essentials.

Now, for a look at the charming bedroom. This space embraces subtle color with its pastel end of bed bench and delightful reading nook.

A bedroom pendant light hangs over one side of the built-in cabinets. Wall sconces flank the bed for direct illumination.

The wall opposite the bed is left empty – no artwork or knickknacks to distract from the quest for sleep.

Attached to the bedroom is a clean and simple bathroom area. Storage cabinets line the vanity, with open shelves tucked in next to the mirror.

Elsewhere, the master bathroom switches from the gentle wood floor aesthetic to clean marble tile.

An incredible walk in wardrobe serves as a picture of pure luxury. Equipped with a vanity and stool, a space like this serves as a full dressing room, allowing the bedroom to maintain its status as a purely relaxation-oriented area.

The modern home office takes on a completely different character compared to the rest of the home. Ample decorations line the shelves along with books and other reference material – everything on display for inspiration and easy access.

This tour closes with a look at the entryway, equipped with a spacious closet illuminated from behind semi-translucent doors. A blush-pink vanity stool and blue sculpture welcome guests with colorful character.

In this home the traditional eastern elements are expressed outwardly but with a dramatic contemporary twist. This tour opens with a fantastic example of Zen inspired design, a dry garden style most commonly attributed to Japan with roots in Chinese water garden layouts.

Vertical wood slats create visual separation between functional areas, an updated take on the intricate lattices and screens of traditional Chinese architecture.

Natural colors define the living room, its light wood furniture accented with touches of jade green textiles.

Various styles of calligraphy adorn the walls throughout the home. Here, a tremendous feature wall commands attention.

In fact, a major portion of the living room is dedicated to creating calligraphy. Behind it, a folding screen centers the space with a large dramatic brush stroke.

The table has shelves for spare scrolls and supplies. Above, linear suspension lights provide even illumination.

Another calligraphic accent draws attention toward the kitchen area, which is set apart from the main living spaces in its own private cove.

Countertops wrap around and project from the kitchen, creating a dining area that can double as extra workspace for meal preparation.

The bedroom continues the theme of natural wood, soft greys, and subtle jade accents.

Instead of table lamps, bedroom pendant lights hang at either side of the bed.

Where you might otherwise expect a well-stocked wardrobe, this home concept instead features a stylish place to store calligraphic scrolls and supplies.

A handsome master bathroom is broken into two spaces separated by a glass wall, allowing sunlight to enter unimpeded.

Another bathroom sits tucked away beneath the stairs, integrating the shape of the treads into the architecture for a unique look.
