Round 1, Side A: Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers (2019) vs Kingdom Hearts 3 (2019)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
FFXIV | Kingdom Hearts
Campaigns under the cut!
Campaign for FFXIV:
oh my god where do I start. Final Fantasy XIV (FFXIV) is an MMORPG that's been going on 2013, or 2010 if you count the trainwreck that the current FFXIV replaced (the 2010 version's music was composed mainly by Uematsu, 2013 onwards is mostly Soken). Thus its OST is FUCKING HUGE and spans a whole lot of genres. If you like any kind of music at all you can probably find at least one track that speaks to you in this game. FFXIV has a category of incredibly difficult fights called Ultimate, comprised of multiple short phases that each have their own music. Because of the nature of how Ultimates are structured, they're the only fights in FFXIV where the music can actually be timed to the mechanics. If you're not afraid of story spoilers, look up any ultimate's BGM and you can see how cool this effect is. (I can't listen to Under the Weight without also hearing the sound of every mechanic and tankbuster.) (My personal favorite ultimate, music-wise, is The Epic of Alexander. Back when I was progging the fight I used to fall asleep listening to the BGM.) To The Edge is so so special to everyone who loves FFXIV. It's the theme of a boss in Shadowbringers; I can't give details without also giving major spoilers, but I will say that the story and this song deal with the themes of death and loss. If you look up the lyrics, which aren't too spoilery without context, you'll get what I mean. What makes this extra emotional is that FFXIV's main composer, Soken, was in the hospital fighting cancer when he composed this song. (To be clear: he kept working because it provided him with a desperately needed sense of normalcy, not because he needed to.) No one on the dev team knew aside from Yoshi P, FFXIV's producer + director as well as Soken's personal friend; the rest of the team found out the same time the fans did, months after the fact when Soken was in full remission, at the 2021 FFXIV Fan Festival (FanFest). To The Edge was already widely beloved prior to this because it's an incredible banger tied to an incredible story moment, but knowing what was going on behind the scenes during its composition, in addition to the story and song's own themes surrounding death, turns it into a piece that no one can listen to without getting wildly emotional about it. At the same FanFest, before Soken announced that he fought cancer and won, he performed this live: https://youtu.be/aBt4zT_PBmw?si=SgzTV9BvINfA0b-U Absolute king shit. With Hearts Aligned is also so so so special to me because it's the song that plays in the 'victory lap' second phase against the final boss that caps off a nine year long story arc. It features a leitmotif from The Maker's Ruin, a song from 2013, that represents the player and is often used when we overcome seemingly insurmountable odds. There are no words that can describe the sheer fucking emotion of fighting the final boss of a nine year long story arc while listening to the leitmotif that represents YOU, a leitmotif that you first heard however many weeks or months or years ago when you first started playing this game. The ultimate triumph, and the ultimate song of hope. Also if you like leitmotifs, FFXIV has /so many leitmotifs/. Have a spreadsheet of them: https://x.com/EENlX/status/1686043012353396736?s=20 Also also, Alex Moukala on youtube does more in-depth analysis of some of the best tracks in FFXIV! Great videos, I highly recommend checking them out.
I would put the entire game's soundtrack if I could but there's a LOT. The album I listed is for the "postgame" of Shadowbringers. Of particular note is the song "To The Edge" which was written while the composer, Masayoshi Soken, was battling with cancer.
Campaign for KH3:
yoko shimomura, the GODDESS, the LEGEND, her composing skills never fail to amaze! kh music is so so goodddddd
I’m not good with propagandizing but the OST for this series is so good. For KH3, I love so much of the soundtrack. The Disney worlds have some great tracks, but the endgame and dlc has almost nothing but bangers.

Wolcred Week 2023: Tea|Family
(The final section of this takes place the day before the last prompt as I will pad out certain parts of 6.4 it's our timeline and we can do what we want Yoshi-P said so. A series of scenes across MSQ that borrows some lines of dialogue from 4.5 and 6.4, clocking in at around 1500 words, about my pair's experiences with the topics.)
“Aeryn!” Minfilia waved, smile bright as she and Thancred sat together in the Solar, a tea service upon the small table between them.
“Sorry, didn’t mean to interrupt,” Aeryn said, turning back to the door.
“Not at all,” Thancred replied, standing and gesturing towards the seat he had vacated. “Minfilia enjoys her weekly tea party, and the more the merrier.” He snagged another chair and brought it over.
“Everyone else is off on their own business, but you continue to have fortuitous timing,” Minfilia said as Aeryn joined them, hesitating before taking the chair Thancred offered; he did not sit again until she did.
“A lovely tea service,” Aeryn said. The set was gleaming silver with colorful crystal inlays in an elegant, sinuous style she had never seen before.
“An inheritance, from the elderly woman who taught me some Ala Mhighan traditions,” Minfilia said as she poured for Aeryn. “I was young when my father and I fled, but when Lhaminn took me in, we had a neighbor who had once been a merchant that worked closely with the Ananta artisans, and she shared such things with me.”
Aeryn tilted her head quizzically.
“A tribe in Gyr Abania,” Thancred explained. “It’s said they’re all women, but instead of legs they have snake bodies. They’re supposed to be excellent crafters of metals and crystals.”
Aeryn nodded. “Reminds me of stories of the gods in Thavnair.”
“Oh, do tell!” Minfilia asked. Thancred sighed good-naturedly, throwing Aeryn an encouraging smile.
Tea stretched on through the rest of the afternoon and into the evening as they spoke and laughed together.
“Master Thancred, welcome!” The Fortemps manservant smiled genuinely as he led Thancred inside. “The Count was delighted to hear you’d accepted his invitation.”
Tataru’s doing; she had informed Thancred he had been invited and that he would be cleaning himself up and attending or Thal help him. So here he was, hair neatly pulled back, a small patch over his injured eye, in a simple white jacket, black slacks, and short boots that their coinkeeper had set out for him.
There were times he did not mind dressing up and rubbing elbows with nobility for a change of pace, practicing his charms and social skills on the upper crust. Today, though, he would much rather be in the Forgotten Knight’s lower rooms, drinking and playing card games that could end in a knife fight.
But the Count was the Scions’ patron in Ishgard, and he had to play his part.
The servant led him to an unfamiliar space; a veranda enclosed all in glass, walls and ceiling, leaning upon one side of the manor, the garden stretching around them before wending down in a series of switchbacks, stretching at least three levels below.
“Welcome,” Count Edmont said with his usual warmth. “Thank you for joining us.”
“Thancred!” Alphinaud said with delight. He seemed both more his youthful age and yet also matured after the trials that had led them to this cold, vertically-built city. Thancred smiled in response and reflected once more that Louisoix would be proud of the young man his grandson was growing into.
Aeryn turned in her own chair, nodding in greeting. She wore a simple blue wool dress, high collar, long sleeves, and he couldn’t see what shoes she wore under the long skirt. She looked quite graceful and lovely, with her soft dark tresses brushing her shoulders…
Thancred looked away to greet the Count’s sons.
Tataru soon joined them, pretty in a pink and white dress, in the company of Lord Aymeric, wearing a formal alpine coat in Borel colors rather than his usual armor. He still moved slowly from the Tournament and how it had exacerbated his still-healing prior injury.
“Y’shtola has returned to Mor Dhona,” Tataru said, apologetic.
“Yes, she sent word,” Count Edmont said. “Still, ‘tis nice to have most of the family together for tea, after such a rousing victory on the Tournament field.”
Thancred found himself exchanging a look with Aeryn. For all his japes about Ishgard needing her to win, he had to admit they had put on a good showing all their own; Raubahn might have done for them if Aeryn had not been there, but there was no shame in losing to the Champion of the Bloodsands.
She smiled sheepishly, blush coloring her cheeks, and Thancred was somehow distracted enough that he almost missed Lord Artoirel’s questions about the cyclops.
“Greetings! Could it be that I'm in time for tea?”
Aeryn, Y’shtola, and Alisaie looked up as Thancred strode toward their table, the dust of the road and the windblown look of an airship ride about him. “It certainly looks that way," Alisaie said. "Come on─sit down and tell us how your investigations went.”
Thancred took the seat next to Aeryn. They briefly exchanged soft smiles; Alisaie and Y’shtola exchanged their own glances, the adolescent rolling her eyes. Y’shtola’s lip twitched in amused reply.
At some point, Y’shtola mused, she would have to point out that they were not keeping their affair as secret as they thought. There were more pressing matters at the moment, however, such as Alisaie’s concern for her brother, and the update Thancred brought from Gyr Abania.
Thancred picked up his mug, frowned, and looked at the silver and colored crystal tea service, in now-familiar sinuous Ananta designs. “Where’d this come from?”
“F'lhaminn,” Alisaie answered. “She said something about this is the service one ought to use for a family tea today, despite it being a working tea, really.”
“Oh,” Aeryn said. “She’s right; today’s the day we’d use this set.”
Y’shtola watched Thancred as he frowned, and then, glancing at Aeryn and her gentle sympathizing look, he visibly relaxed and smiled. “So it is,” he said quietly. Then he straightened, pouring himself a cup. “Now, to business…”
Y’shtola relaxed as well. She would explain to Alisaie later, if Aeryn did not. For now, best to appreciate this bit of comfort as they dealt with difficult matters.
“I simply must insist!” Dulia-Chai exclaimed. “We cannot possibly let you leave without refreshment, and it IS teatime! Right, dear?!”
Ryne suppressed a giggle as Chai-Nuzz sputtered an agreement. Thancred sighed and opened his mouth to again decline, but Aeryn took his arm and quietly reminded him what day of the week it was.
“What about it…” he paused, eyes slightly squinching in a way Ryne recognized as him converting Vrantic to Eorzean, or vice versa. Then he blinked, looking to Aeryn and her expectant face. “You’re right,” he replied with a chuckle. “I suppose it is the day for family tea.” He turned his charming smile to Dulia. “Very well, dear lady.”
“Splendid!” she cried, clapping her hands in joy, then hooking an arm through the one of Thancred’s that Aeryn didn’t have, and marching them all toward her parlor, while Chai-Nuzz and Ryne hurried along after.
Ryne wasn’t sure what the “family tea” comments and looks were about, but it sounded nice. She would just have to ask them once they sat down—assuming Dulia let anyone have a word in edgewise!
“Unto thee we must also give thanks, Thancred, for coming to our aid on such short notice,” Urianger said.
“Please, you know I'm always happy to help. Don't hesitate to call on me again.”
“Not leaving already are you?” Aeryn asked with a frown.
Thancred stretched and winced. “Well, I was going to grab a meal at the Last Stand and then spend the night at the Annex before tending to my next bit of business.” He turned a wicked grin on her. “Fear I’ll deprive you of my company all too soon, my lady?”
The expected blush flared across her cheeks, making Urianger, Varshahn, and Estinien chuckle, while Zero watched, still not understanding the flirtations the pair kept exchanging since Thancred had joined them. “Well,” Aeryn said. “After that little adventure, we might as well all go to the Last Stand together. Including you, Varshahn.”
He shrugged good-naturedly. “I could hardly decline such an invitation. I shall even partake, since we will be in public.”
“This is a good opportunity to replenish our aether, since we did not take advantage of the font,” Zero noted.
Thancred linked his arm with Aeryn’s. “Do you know what day it is?” he asked her as they began to trek from the pier to the restaurant.
“Oh! Too bad we haven’t the proper tea service here.”
“Nay, ‘tis still safely at the Rising Stones under Mistress Tataru’s ever-watchful eyes,” Urianger interjected. “And yet, the date and time is correct for tea with family and new friends.”
Thancred nodded. “Indeed; a good learning opportunity for Zero as well, I do believe.”
Zero tugged her hat brim as the others smiled.
“Fear not, Zero,” Estinien said warmly. “Our resident lovebirds only mean to introduce you to a Scion family tradition. And trust me, there’s no getting out of it.”
He laughed as Aeryn turned her head to stick her tongue out at him, before returning to her conversation with Thancred as they led the way, together.

swtor has a lot (and i mean a lot) of issues with its writing but one thing that i always thought was very sensible was that (outside of the kotfe timeskip) time passes ingame on a 1:1 basis - ie. 1 irl year = 1 year of time passing in story. it allowed the game's storylines to maintain a sense of time passing without getting into weird date shit or just this. nebulous vague handwaving
and like. xiv is the very polar opposite of that, with yoshi p's insistence that it's a nebulous time bubble they don't want to pin down and that it all probabl happened in a year or so, not least because. with every addition to the story, the wol's No Good Very Bad Year just gets more and more jam packed. they've gone from a nothing nobody to killing gods to framed for regicide to pardoned to killing a head of state for real this time to taking upwards of two multi month ship journeys and finally to the arse end of the fucking universe and back in a single twelve calendar month period and it's like ??? when are they resting. when are they doing all these fetch quests the narrative likes to rag on us for doing. when do they shit.
and some of that i'm sure is that they don't want to deal with the twins having to grow up and change even though they get redesigns every expac anyway so they can sell new mogstation outfits so it's like ??? as much as i. very much Do Not want to have to see people making excuses to be gross about the kids people kinda. do that anyway so it's. yeah. let them actually grow up!!
like. for all that i could snark about how they are allergic to yshtola actually having character growth or change because she's the Main Waifu, she does go through the most physical changes of the scions (excepting maybe the catboy, but he's a special case).
it would just hit so much more if you went back to sid after shb to see that shit, rielle had her growth spurt in your absence. return to the crystarium and see taynor having grown up into a mage to rival nyelbert.
idk!!!

Entropy's guide to Final Fantasy XIV
Just a handy dandy little guide for no reason because you literally don't need a guide to play the game and be happy but I keep seeing misconceptions about it and they're driving me UP THE GODS BE DAMNED WALL so here we ARE
Tumblr media
FINAL FANTASY XIV WAS ORIGINALLY RELEASED IN 2010
AND IT SUCKED
There's a ton of different series based on the absolute shenanigry that was involved in FFXIV 1.x but the important part is that most of the development team were either fired or moved to other departments and were replaced by the current Producer; Yoshi-P and his team. They tried rehabilitating the game as is but it became increasingly apparent they were going to have to do something drastic so they shut the game down and completely redid it. Keeping in mind that Square Enix was not doing well financially at the time, this means their budget was not very big and it shows from time to time.
2.x otherwise known as A Realm Reborn, is a completely redone base game. Over the past couple of years the devs have done a lot to improve the base game for longevity reasons but it's still kind of awkward and a bit of a slog. Be patient, dick around, honestly I do recommend playing around on the Free Trial unless you know you're going to be playing awhile because it isn't time gated so you can go at your own pace (You just can't exceed a certain level or quest at the end of the first expac; Heavensward, and you have a TON of content you can access despite being a trial.)
Still a lot of people just do not like ARR (or subsequently the expac Stormblood) and this brings me to my next point
2. THERE ARE "JUMP BOOSTS" SOLD IN THE STORE TO SKIP STORY AND CLASS LEVELS
If you're new to the game dO 👏 NOT 👏 FUCKING 👏 USE 👏THESE 👏!!! Even if you aren't interested in the story, the game is training you for the mechanics that come in later in the game.
You'll see it time and again where a WoW streamer or someone will come in and try FFXIV but they'll treat it like their old mmo and say it's a terrible game but you'll watch their streams and they're standing in twelve AOEs and refusing to do mechanics shouting about the healers being terrible. The game is SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED so that you have to do mechanics and not stand in shit. If you get one hit by a AoE Marker in end game every other person was trained to avoid from the beginning of the game, idk what you want them to do tbqh!!!
Tumblr media
3. AT THE END OF THE DAY FFXIV IS A FINAL FANTASY GAME
The focus of this game is story and will always be story. Unlike western games that all decided cutscenes were bad for some reason, you will literally be inundated with them. Not all of them are voiced. That is a lot of reading. Pace yourself.
There are different story arcs (expansions) but the story of Final Fantasy XIV is one continuous story from beginning to end and it references past events all the time because it's still relevant. The devs try really hard to make sure old unexplained questions get addressed and their attention to detail is pretty great. We literally just had one of our mysteries of base game explained but also maybe with a tie in for future content.
FFXIV has been described as being one of the best single player MMO experiences and that's getting truer all the time. Devs are only a couple dungeons away from having made every single dungeon you are required to do for story available to complete using NPC teammates instead of real people.*
Our Raids have story and cutscenes. Our non required dungeons got story and cutscenes. If you're not interested in story you probably shouldn't be playing this game. We do have a raiding scene and FFXIV has probably one of the lowest entries into raiding so it's easy to get into but it's not going to be the WoW Raiding scene other people are used to.
Also stop complaining about the unskippable cutscenes that show up in very select dungeons. They are Like That™ because old players used to kick new players for trying to watch them because they're trying to speedrun. It's a thing we all gotta struggle through because of people without empathy.
If you don't have time for things to go bad, don't run that content.
*this doesn't include Trials which are big boss fights but when you realize NPCs can't do more than one (1) mechanic at a time you begin to realize why there's exactly one trial they can do in the entire goddamn game.
4. WESTERN AND ASIAN FANTASY ARE TWO DIFFERENT THINGS
I keep seeing people scoff at Asian fantasy because it's not what they're used to in fantasy like GoT or tES but idek why they're compared?? Final Fantasy is inspired by dungeons & dragons, sure, but it's also inspired by shit like
S T A R W A R S
Tumblr media
I'm not even remotely joking about that. Once you realize that it becomes more apparent the more you look. 80s Star Wars was HUGE in Japan. As my sibling says, it's not really a Final Fantasy game unless you end up in space for some reason.
This is ofc not even mentioning that the values and cultural infuences of different European countries tend to be different from one another let alone fucking JAPAN at the other end of the world.
Some weird and wild shit happens in the game that you wouldn't see in your typical Western fantasy stories but to be quite honest some of the complaints I see against Asian anything is quite frankly Racist. (If you have had the notion that Asian things are just worse than Western stuff then I may have news for you!) I would just try and come at it thinking it's an entirely different genre than try and force it to be something it just isn't nor should be.
Tumblr media
I might add more to this as the salt takes me but!! I've said my piece... for now.

Final Fantasy 16 Review!!
Good god, what a game.
All review is going to be under a cut since this is a new game and limited to a single system so not everyone has the chance to play it yet. I'm also gonna break the review down from like least spoilery to most spoilery. So if you're on the fence about it you can read the less spoilery parts to get a feel for if its your thing or not. Each progressively more spoilery section is going to be divided with BIG warning letters so you have the opportunity to flee.
This is gonna be a long one.
SPOILER LEVEL: NON-EXISTENT (BASIC GAMEPLAY)
First let me just give a generic gushing about this game. This is absolutely my pick for GOTY. I loved the story, I loved the characters, I loved the game play, I LOVED the music.
I do not typically play action games, like ever. I have old lady reflexes and usually they feel really difficult to me, and then I get frustrated and then I stopped having fun. This game did everything in its power to appeal to people like me as well as people who enjoy suffering. I played this game in story-focused mode which (I'm assuming) has a lower difficulty. It didn't feel braindead simple by any means. It still felt challenging enough without making me mad.
There were also a ton of accessories to help with gameplay if you're having trouble. Accessories that heal instantly for you, or give you a pop up with a prompt to dodge, or one that does auto combo's for you. I didn't end up using these, because I felt I had enough grasp on how to move and dodge that I didn't need them but they definitely offer a lot of accessibility if your like me and inexperienced (and old).
If you like the challenge and suffering there is an action-focused mode with (assuming) a harder difficulty mode meant for people with more experience. They also have challenges in the game where you can replay the "levels" at increasing difficulties.
My first playthrough was about 75-80h. I did all the side quests but I skipped a lot of the challenges. There's a NG+ mode, and like I mentioned a lot of challenges of increasing difficulty so I think your time/dollar value in this game is well worth it, even at the $70 price.
Also if you're ever lost in the story (or if you're just a huge lore nerd) there are "live" lore points available at any point in the game that can provide a quick recap of what's relevant to where you are in the story at any given moment. There's also a loremaster you can visit anytime that holds a compilation of ALL the information in the game. And about half way through the game you get another character that can break every moment down in a timeline that shows you what you've done so far.
AND THE GRAPHICS. My god, they really made use of that new gen tech. The characters were so lifelike in some scenes. I cant even tell you how amazing it was to watch their faces make the most minute twitches, subtle movements that just really brought them to life and it was incredible to see how far tech has come.
THE MUSIC. Oh my god. Soken is really a genius. And the way he managed to marry a lot of FF14 music into some of the fight music really felt like being in on a secret. Idk it was a very epic soundtrack that didn't disappoint.
Also you can pet the dog. As much as you want. And he's the goodest boy.
SPOILER LEVEL: MINOR (CHARACTERS MENTIONED, MINOR PLOT DISCUSSION)
I had high expectations for this game as an FF14 player. I had total faith Yoshi P (producer) would not put his name on anything that would be disappointing. I was not let down.
First I could not get over how much of a world they managed to build. Sometimes it was almost staggering how they managed to not just create a world with various environments and people but fleshed out that world with history, political turmoil, a class system, rebellion, secret organizations... It was like playing Game of Thrones (fun fact, it was an inspiration) with how much was going on and how deep the world building ran. There were times I really just paused the game and went "My god they created a literal universe here".
It did have some plot holes. At then end while my boyfriend and I were exchanging our thoughts, we both had kind of a few "uh weird how they never mentioned ____". I feel like sometimes the game just expected you, the player to suspend disbelief. That aside though, it was a beautifully told story, and while I was playing, none of the aforementioned did anything to detract from my enjoyment of the story as I went.
If I did have one complaint for the story and the lore though, it's how overwhelming and immersion ruining the side quests can get as the game progresses. At the start there's not many side quests. You finish and arc and there is maybe 2-3 side quests available after. But towards the end of the game? You finish a single quest and theres 7-10 side quests to do. The side quests added so much to the game for side characters and lore and world building so I didn't want to skip them. But at some point it also started to feel tedious and distracting to have to do them.
It was VERY MUCH a JRPG. I heard a lot of people saying it didn't feel like an FF game and that it lost the spirit of the franchise but did we even play the same game? This was every bit a JRPG that was very true to its roots and it was the breath of life this franchise frankly needed.
The CHARACTERS. First let me just say:
A CANON GAY?!?!? IN MY FINAL FANTASY?!?!? AND HES NOT A JOKE?!?!
When Dion kissed his lover I fucking screamed and cried. And that the game didn't make him like... stereotypical? He wasn't overly flamboyant, he wasn't used as the butt of any jokes, he wasn't predatory. He was actually an incredible character, very complex, very good hearted. (Also beautiful to look at but they all were.) and when I mentioned minute facial movements earlier, I was specifically impressed by Dion. I feel like they told so much of who he was through just his face that it was stunning.
On the negative side though, I was really unimpressed with Jill's character. There were a lot of interesting and strong female side characters, but some how Jill stayed so flat the whole time. I felt like she was nothing but Clive's girlfriend and they didn't really develop her a whole lot beyond that? Even her entire arc just kinda felt... incomplete? Cobbled together at the last minute and rushed through? I think if there is one super critical thing I have to say about this game its Jill.
Oh and did I mention all the characters in this game are "old"? Like 30s, 40s, 50s, a few in their late 20s. Unheard of for an FF game but it really made a difference.
SPOILER WARNING: MAJOR!!!! (DETAILED CHARACTER AND PLOT DISCUSSION)
Let me just do a little character gush break down:
Clive: Absolutely the best FF protag ever. Like they built him like some meme edgelord but actually he's a cinnamon roll. I am actually so heartbroken for Clive because he had a troubled life from the very start with a mom that absolutely hated him, being the first born but not being the Dominant of the Phoenix, carrying the guilt of killing his brother around with him for 13 years. My heart actually breaks for him
Joshua: Baby boy. Sweet sweet baby boy. I sat in fucking suspense about this boy the whole game. From the moment he was revealed (adult him anyway) I fell in love with him and then spent the rest of the game saying "please don't kill Joshua please don't kill Joshua" I bit my nails down to nothing every fight sequence. My one criteria for not quitting this game on the spot was if he died before he reunited with Clive. If that had happened, there wouldn't be this 3000 word review rn.
Jill: The most disappointing character. I couldn't even hate her, because I didn't feel like there was enough to her to hate. She loved Clive. They worked in the whole deal about her feeling guilty (suddenly) for all the death she caused as Shiva but then as soon as Clive won the battle for her she didn't feel bad at all ever again? Idk I feel like they just didn't really care about Jill but needed a female lead so she was made?
Cid: Daddy. Cid was a great character that wasn't with us nearly long enough.
Gav: GAV. G A V . I LOVED Gav. Like from the moment he appeared I genuinely thought he was going to be a pretty minor side character and I was sad because I really loved him right from the start. But then we got to spend more and more time with him and man I LOVED him. He was such a ray of sunshine, big golden retriever energy, loved this baby boy so much. There was one point in the game where the party was Clive, Joshua, Gav and Torgal and I said to my boyfriend "they have such potential to ruin my life right now". Anything happening to Gav was my other condition that would make me stop playing the game lmao.
Anabelle: Listen. I have never hated a character so much. This bitch ruined her children's lives with a smile on her face. This bitch massacred bearers for funsies. And at the end she got to commit suicide ezpz? There really is no justice in the world.
Dion: I think I gushed enough about Dion up above but man I can just do it again. I don't know how they made me love a character that was like, barely in the game so much but they did. They made him bear all the guilt and pain and deny himself anything good and become a martyr and they just made me love him.
Now about the FIGHTS. I said the combat system was fun but I didn't even mention the Primal fights. That fight with Titan Lost? FUCKKK. It was so epic my blood was bubbling. The fight with Bahamut? CHILLS. I thought Primal fights were gonna be kinda gimmicky and cinematic and to some extent they were (VERY cinematic) but they felt so high stakes and fast paced it made your heart pound, even if you were only minimally participating during a cut scene. The devs kept saying they really wanted to give the primal fights a sense of enormity and they 100% accomplished that.
SPOILER WARNING: BIG BIG MAJOR!!!! (ENDING DISCUSSION)
The fucking ending. This fucking ending.
First of all when I say this was every bit a JRPG, I mean it so literally. The formula is all there. Pick a human trait and then fight god about it. In this case human will making them prone to destruction means god, Ultima, should take back what he gave them. And then it all cumulates in to this end fight where Clive is powered by friendship and punches god in the face lmaooo.
But it was good. Even recognizing it was cheesy at all get out didn't make it less good. (I mean ffs he says "The only fantasy here is yours. And we shall be its final witness"). It made me giddy tbh. It was an exciting fight, and epic battle, and I felt so nostalgic because it felt so classic at the same time. It was beautiful (even if I really sucked at it and forgot to get pots beforehand lmao).
And then the fucking end. Listen. Listen. Was that flashback of Clive meeting baby Joshua really necessary. Was any of that flashback really necessary? Trust the writing and dev team that killed Haurchefant to throw that in there and make sure my heart was thoroughly crushed.
I already said I was biting my nails about Joshua dying but I really wanted to believe they were gonna some how rez him and everything would be fine but no they just left him there dead. And then they also killed Clive? I did not see that coming at all. I saw Joshua coming, I dreaded it the whole game for a reason but killing the main protagonist?? I never saw that coming.
And I sobbed. Like a baby. From the moment Ultima was finally defeated until the end credits I literally just sobbed (quietly to myself so that my boyfriend who was a little behind me in the game wouldn't hear). In fact I cried so much I'm pretty sure this whole review is a grammar and typo mess because my eyes are sticky. It left a hole in my chest.
I DID read a comment that said they both lived because in the post credit scene there is the book Final Fantasy written by Joshua Rosfield and I understand that but idk it didn't feel like they lived? Aside from that book being there nothing about the end really confirmed anything? Idk it was a weird post credit scene or maybe I'm just dumb and didn't understand. SO if you finished the game and actually sat through my garbage so far, you tell me what I missed.
I'm sure I will come up with another 30 random things to gush about when I post this and I know I didn't cover everything I even wanted to talk about before I started, but this is like, way too long already for a review. Basically, in conclusion, I really loved this game. I really highly recommend it to anyone and everyone that can play it.

For no particular reason besides something set me off I feel like laying down a bit of a dream wishlist for things in XIV's future since we're going to be here for a while yet probably.
Vague spoilers!
I would like the XI crossover raid to confirm my long-standing headcanon that the Eleventh reflection is a version of Vana'diel. Which would join the Thirteenth in the "prophecy" about the state of the other reflections.
Let Iroha from the recurring Rhapsodies of Vana'diel return in said raid; you let her stay on the Source at the end of the event, you can't just leave it at that!
Obviously Meracydia is also probably happening sooner than later, and I hope to get more reflection on Allag as well. I know people get tired of Allagans but hey I have Vision One. I can't help it.
Ala Mhigo as a hub; Yoshi-P described the addition of Sharlayan at the Online Fanfest keynote as fulfilling the original 1.0 vision of having six city-states. I consider what we have of AM right now as more a false equivalence.
More on Corvos, and the state of other so-called self-sufficient Garlean territories that have outlived the heart of the Empire. (What even IS Nhalmasque? Did I spell/recall that right? The first nation to fall to Garlemald (after a retcon)?)
God just show more of Ilsabard period, I'm a little shocked we are going to the New World before lifting the fog of war from the majority of the largest of the three great continents. It's been long enough that I nearly forgot, since the game took a trajectory I never could've imagined with Shadowbringers.
I could take or leave more of Hingashi, though it would be interesting to see how much longer they can maintain their current stance especially with the Empire crumbling away. But if it means an excuse to get Geomancer and/or Onmyoji as classes... 👀
Ultima the High Seraph and the Lucavi/espers being a major overarching antagonist in the post-EW world and an Ivalice-driven expac, a culmination of really the first references to Dalmasca in the story, and gaining relevance once more.
This ends up being like the ultimate sequel to the Matsuno saga that has been left at Save the Queen and picks up various threads noted particularly in the Zadnor field notes. And it allows Rabanastre and the surrounding region to finally flourish beyond simply being there for side content.
I mentioned this before, but a way to incorporate certain maps but show change as a result of our efforts, even if means the before and after exist simultaneously. It doesn't sit well with me that Eulmore and Gatetown can't change, or that Doma, the Lochs around Ala Mhigo or even Garlemald have to stay ruined, per the game's deep-seated limitations.

Super Kappa Bros AU
Major Bullet Points
Woahhh everything’s mario now!
The Hidden City is actually the mario world
The Yokai are actually just mario creatures, as are mutants
Will go into the brothers’ species in quick summary
Baron Draxum made the four brothers to enslave humanity
Same gist, but he used mario world (species) dna
I’m gonna keep most info the same, for the simplicity of it
But there’s definitely changes and alterations
Quick summary:
Firstly, let’s get this out of the way. Speed round!
Splinter is a variant of either mouser or little mouser
Raph is the same species as Bowser, maybe a koopaling?
Leo is a koopa (hear me out)
Donnie is a dry bones (BAM)
Mikey is a yoshi
April’s just a human, and all the other humans are normal-ish
MORE TO BE ADDED AS REFS ARE MADE
The four turtles were born as regular turtles, but got changed when they were given human dna, and the dna of specific ‘yokai’ species we mean mario species, and when this happened, they became members of the Hamato kingdom, and also were given myyyyystic powwwwerssss ooooh how maaaaagicallll!
OH MY GOD I'M GONNA MAKE THE SANDO BROTHERS FIRE & ICE FLOWERS CAUSE THAT IS SUCH A FUN IDEA OMG
April will always have a dangerous amount of hammer power ups on hand, and will literally just pull one out during a fight.
Making up a power up for Baron. A green and yellow daisy-esc flower called Flower Power! Which gives Barry the ability to make flowers rise from the floor as his platforms.
OKAY, I DECIDED that mutants are the only ones with inherited powers, because the Piders, now called Goopiders (which are our oozesquitoes), are what gives the powers.
This means that any non mutants that I specify a power for just happens to have A LOT of that specific power up item.
Hypno will have the Pal Pill ability
Groundhog will have the drill berry ability ofc
I think Honey Badger should actually have the rock mushroom
And then I think Prairie Dog should get a spring mushroom ability
Maybe Repo Mantis gets the pickaxe power up?
(For the simplicity of it, I may be more lenient about making up my own power up ideas for background or lesser known yokai or mutant characters. For instance, I don’t know a good plant power up for Baron Draxum that has to do with flowers :’])
These powers are in the form of mario power ups. The four turtles can’t use other power ups, unless it’s the consumable or touchable object that associates with them. Their body will reject it, and they may even feel dizzy (if they touched it) or sick (if they ate it). If the turtles eat or touch the item associated with their core power up though, it grows much much stronger for a temporary time.
So back on the unfamiliar-power-up thing real quick. The unfamiliar power ups can actually work, but they are INCREDIBLY unreliable for the turtles specifically. Often the power up will glitch, randomly turn off and on, and of course, the dizzy or sick feeling lasts till the power up is over. This is why the turtles try to avoid foreign power ups if possible.
Also, for another balancing thing, like how mystic magic works, the turtles do channel their powers better with weapons. Though the more magically skilled of the brothers can use powers without weapons. Also, also, while I imply that the turtles can use their powers whenever, it does take significant energy. This won’t be a problem usually, but if the turtles haven’t had lunch yet, or haven’t eaten in a while, they’ll feel more tired each time they use their powers.
Raph’s power up is normally granted by the Mega mushroom, which allows him to turn even bigger than he was before. He turns about half his mystic’s size, and with a Mega Shroom on top of that, he can grow as big as his mystic size too. Thankfully, Mega Shrooms are very common, and Raph runs a little garden to grow these shrooms. Raph was the first to awaken his power.
Leo’s power up is normally granted by the P-Wing (super specific, I know lol), and specifically the one from the game “Super Mario 3D Land”. This allows Leo to teleport anywhere that’s in his eyesight range. This may seem overpowered, but he has to be able to focus on the place he wants to teleport heavily, and can’t get distracted mid teleport, or he may go somewhere else, or teleport into an object. Leo got his power up second to last.
Donnie’s power up is normally granted by the Drill Mushroom, which would turn Donnie into a drill (haha drill out of beta lolol). Donnie took the longest to unlock his powers, partly because of an envious jealousy about not being able to understand the logic behind the innate core-ness of the power ups within them, and also because he was scared of using his power up. We’ll get into that in a bit…
Mikey’s power up is usually granted by Bulb Berries, which usually turn specifically Yoshis very bright, like a light bulb. While it can provide a light source, the bulb power up can also be great for blinding foes, since Mikey can decide how bright he wants to be. That being said, the brighter he makes himself, the more energy it takes. Mikey was the second turtle of the brothers to unlock his power up.
So, as we stated before, Donnie was scared of using his power up. I don’t know exactly how I’m gonna make this work, but Dry Bones can rebuild themselves, and I head-canon that they need to do it themselves, and can only rebuild themselves if they have all their pieces (kind of like the dark armor kettle if you remember). I’m gonna somehow have it that Donnie was missing a few pieces of his shell after an incident.
I think he’d still be okay, as stated, Dry Bones can build up again, but it’s much easier to break his shell, which doesn’t really hurt since it’s not as attached to him as it used to be, but it also makes his unprotected body hidden within the shell a lot more fragile. So yeah, one day he and Mikey (teens) are hanging out, and Donnie accidentally does his drill power when he starts to get a bit too frustrated.
This actually does hurt him quite a bit, and his shell shatters again, likely from the messy bone tornado that Donnie became when his power activated. He and Mikey both panicked, even after he stopped spinning around, and he was rather badly injured, since he probably ran into a wall or two during the mess. I think he would assure Mikey he would be able to take care of himself, and probably plead to his little brother not to mention the power up thing (out of embarrassment).
Mikey would hesitantly agree, and you know how he hates lying and keeping secrets, so you’d see the stress until Donnie finally comes to terms and tells his brothers about it. I think he would eventually make something like the battle shell, like a stronger, more durable covering that keeps the shell in one piece when he does the drill spin, and eventually he’d learn to stay in one piece and navigate better during the power usage.
Wow, this is getting really long… Uh… I’ll put more info later I guess. We’ll see, lol. I might put more in a fic if people would want to read a fic on this thing. I think it’d be super fun :]
So yeah, I’m still calling them yokai btw for the simplicity of it. I also don’t think it’d be too farfetched either, since the Mario company is Nintendo, and that originated in Japan anyways :’)
Dang, I'm gonna have to reorganize this later, but whatever...

The more I drown myself in the ending song, the worse my outlook on post-game outcomes gets. It's Yoshi-P and Soken, there's probably some meaning to this. Gods, it's so beautiful, but at the same time, I want to cry.

Killing an enemy:
Well, you tried.
Hey, don’t feel bad about it. It was just a bad matchup.
Don’t worry, I got 1-Ups. You’ll be fine.
Take a nap for now, dude.
Killing a Specific Enemy:
Shadow Queen;
Yeah, you’re not gettin’ to sis, again.
For a queen, you’re not all that great, are ya?
Go back to your dirt hole.
Dimentio;
Don’t show your face again, jester.
Agh...damn, that stings. Hopefully, he’ll stay down.
Man, I really hate that guy...
Peach;
S-sis?...
Hey, hey...wait! I-I didn’t mean...it was an accident!
I’m the worst sister ever...
Maria;
...I swung too hard, didn’t I?
Maria! Hey, wake up! I...
H-hey, hang in there! I got a 1-Up!

Geh...d-damn, that’s smarts...
Well...didn’t expect that...
Man, this...this hurts...a lot.
Vision’s going bad...not good.
Sis? Maria? Louise? Anyone...anyone there?
Guess I got too cocky. Heheheh...ahh...
Dying to a specific enemy:
Shadow Queen;
G-god dammit...
Sis...please get away...please...
Mr Mario and Luigi guys...are gonna make you pay...
Dimentio;
No way...why??
As long as one of us stands...you won’t get your way...
Screw you, clown...
Peach;
Hehe...whoops. Guess...we overdid it, huh?
H-hey, it’s fine. You...didn’t mean it.
Don’t worry...still love ya...sis.
Maria;
Hehe...ah...got a 1-Up, Maria?
H-hey, don’t cry. It was just an accident...
Definitely got Mr. Mario’s strength, haha...
Louise;
C’mon, don’t cry for me...you did good. Besides, I’ll be back...soon...
Yep...you’re definitely as strong as your sis. Nice work...
...P-promise to not tell sis about this?
Meeting an Ally:
Mario;
Woohoo! Let’s’a go, Mr. Mario!
Now I know we’ll win, for sure!
Show me the power of a real superstar, Mr. Mario!
Luigi;
No time to back down, Mr. Luigi! Let’s take these guys out!
Mind teaching me how to use that poltergust, later? Looks fun!
Let’s see what the Mushroom Kingdom’s Green Stache Hero can really do!
Peach;
I’ll watch your back, sis.
Heh. This is gonna be a cinch with you around, sis.
Dealing with two Mushroom Kingdom Princess’? They may as well give up, now.
Bowser;
Hey...if things go well, ya mind skipping the kidnapping sis thing for a little? I’ve been wanting to spend more time with her.
Yo, yo, Koopa King! Let’s crush these losers!
The brute force approach? I like your style, Bowser.
Bowser Jr;
Really living up to your old man’s legacy, Jr. Nice work.
Man, that clown car is a powerful as ever... Say, could you let me try it out, one day?
Man, Bowser’s really got his hands full with you and your siblings, huh?
Yoshi;
Can you show me how to do that flutter jump thing, latter? I can float, sure, but that looks like fun, too.
Man, are you ALWAYS hungry, Yoshi?
For the last time, I’m not your mama... That title belongs to Mr. Luigi.
Maria;
The dynamic duo back at it, again, eh?
Feel free to keep me safe, my knight in shining armor. Hahah!
Ready to show ‘em our tag team combo? Let’s do it!
Louise;
Feel free to hide behind me if you get scared. These guys ARE pretty scary.
Don’t worry at all! We’re invincible, Louise!
Heck yeah! Let’s rock ‘n roll!
Respawning;
Time for some good old fashioned revenge...
Looks like I gotta be more careful. These guys are tough.
Luckily, I carried around that 1-Up.
Man, dying sucks. Definitely not doing that, again.
Hey, I’m alive! Sweet.
Winning:
Easy peasy.
As I expected, we’re way too strong.
This is the real strength of the Mushroom Kingdom! Impressed?
Losing:
Meh, you win some, you lose some.
Man, I was running my mouth, too... How embarrassing...
Don’t worry, guys. We’ll get ‘em next time.
Selecting Repeatedly:
Ya know, ever since we started this whole ‘MOBA BATTLEFIELD’ thingy, I feel like I’ve seen more action than I ever have, before... Honestly, it’s pretty nice to just cut loose and fight. Sure beats having to fight my urge to fall asleep, in class, that’s for sure. Pretty cool that nobody actually dies for real, here, either. Anyways, thanks for letting me fight alongside all my friends like this. It’s been a fun ride.

So much of Final Fantasys identity is through ripping off other games. FFXIV would not exist without WoW, the FF TCG would not exist without Magic the Gathering, and actually maybe I should have started with this example but the very first Final Fantasy game wouldn’t even exist without D&D first edition. There are further spinoffs that are probably less important like My Life as a King coming from Matching Maker/Metropolismania or FF Explorers just being Monster Hunter but with FF enemies, but no one really talks about those. I’m not here to deride the FF franchise for iterating on already popular games, far from it. I actually wanna list more it needs to start ripping off.
Animal Crossing - lemme dress up a chibi warrior of light in FF cosplays and decorate my house while talking to bipedal chocobos and behemoths and shit
Minecraft - Dragon Quest did it and it was great. It took place in an alternate history timeline of the first game where the villain won. Do that with FF1. Say Chaos won. How do we rebuild? Minecraft style with eccentric NPCs, duh.
Dynasty Warriors - You keep making these numbered FF games with action-oriented combat reminiscent of either KH or Nioh but what you fail to understand is that Musou is way cooler. Give it Stranger of Paradise’ job system and let me customize how I kill hoards of catuar. Better yet give the customizable avatar MC the job system and let all my cohorts be returning FF characters from series past. And gimme obscure shit, too, I don’t mean throw Cloud and Sehpiroth in there and call it good - don’t fucking skimp on Faris FFV or Maria FFII or any lovable character from games you don’t milk annually.
[Your Favourite 2D Fighting Game Here] - I know you think Dissidia is cool and original or whatever but take a step back and look at how much more popular 2D or even more grounded arena fighting games are. How much more character-per-character you could shove in a full move roster rather than just “Brave attack and Damage attack”. Hey, @ SquareEnix, this isn’t just for the fans, dude, this is for YOU. It could sell gangbusters. You like money enough to sell NFTs but not enough to make a 2D FF fighting game? Lazy dogasses. Call it Fighting Fantasy like you were originally gonna call FF1, have some fun with it. And again, I swear to god, if you topload it with VII I’m going to bite your ankles off.
Octodad: Dadliest Catch -
Tumblr media
Pokemon - Another thing Dragon Quest dared to do and strived off of. Call it Final Fantasy - Beastmasters as a callback to the cool recurring job that Yoshi-P won’t add to XIV for some reason.
Rune Factory/Harvest Moon/Stardew - I think this is what Harvestella is supposed to be, but it doesn’t go hard enough IMO. MORE Final Fantasy. Romancable returning characters. Ranching baby behemoths. Real-time combat in dangerous dungeons. Maybe farming.
Elder Scrolls - You guys have a good thing going here, you’ve got a grand RPG series with history and lore and recurring enemies and themes - now make it open world, first person, and release it several times in an identical state over the course of a decade.
uuh anyway in conclusion if u make video games then rip off as many other games as you can cause you’ll probably do better than them eventually

i'm back hehe and i watched the tmap special!!! they're so cute but god did the cooking stress me out 😭 i would not be able to deal with them lmao but!! i also saw they uploaded another dance compilation 🥺🥺 i genuinely love those, i rewatch them all the time so i hope this one is as good (i'm sure it will be). I haven't seen any announcements tho so... whygeee come on... don't do this...
and yeah survivals are long af, usually poorly managed, and overall just really stressful 😔 i like watching them later since a lot of them are in new groups by then, so i watched pdx in like 2020 i think, when i got into victon! and like u said so many of them were currently active so it lessens the :( a bit. Same with ygtb ofc and p much every other survival show i watched besides iland. But it also feels really cool to watch enha now and think i contributed even a little bit by voting for them 🥹
hehe i just watched it too JNDSJHGB they have come a long way with cooking (thank u rakkidol) but yeah i will never not b stressed when they hand kpop boys knives 😂 tutu basically pouring an entire salt shaker into the sausage and eggs the first time, junkyu putting enough seaweed for 30 people into the soup, truly only team hyunsuk/dobby/yoshi was peaceful but that checks out given who was in it dbabsdjgh but as always tmap is so healing i NEED season 3 PLS ........ yet again also choi said 'oh we're getting ready for our comeback hehe' like girl are you bc i'm still waiting ... i mean i know whygee has been announcing the bp stuff first so i'm hoping that trsr will be up next :< u would think such a large company could manage to manage multiple groups at one time but they really love to not do that.
i also can only watch survival shows later when i'm invested in the outcome haha i will rewatch groups reality show series a million times over before i watch any survival shows. but it is cool to see how far everyone has come, esp with confidence and their bonds!

So... Since Yoshi-P told us to observe what happens to Zenos, we should clearly talk about the Reaper symbolism and Zenos' Voidsent Avatar.
The reaper is like, one of the personifications of death, first appearing during the medieval time in Europe (15th century), and later becomes more widely used for the purpose of representing death.
So in case we take a wild guessing and go look at Zenos' Voidsent Avatar, you see that it is no normal Voidsent Avatar. Its model is completely different, if not standing out in comparison to players' Voidsent Avatar. Firstly it has very humanoid look, with facial traits like mouth, nose and eyes. Secondly, it wears somewhat like armor along with a *halo* hovering above its head. And thirdly, it has a frigging scythe, its own frigging scythe.
Tumblr media
Now I want to explain why I think it is important to note that this thing has its own scythe and halo. We know it's a Voidsent, right? Then we should speculate on why it carries a frigging scythe and a halo. Yoshi-P did say that it could be somewhat close to our WoL, since Zenos sees us as his "friend" and this new "friend" of his may be related to WoL.
So it isn't that far from being the shard of Azem lost in the Void, right?
But then why scythe and halo? Well, there are many personifications of death in different parts of the world due to different cultures. However, we should take into account that the Ancients in FFXIV are mainly named after Greek Deities (Hades, Hermes, Artemis, Gaia) and Roman mythology (Venat comes from Venant). If we go with this then we need to look for a personification of death from Greek Myth, and we would arrive to... Thanatos.
"Thanatos was believed to be the opposite, merciless and hated by both mortals and gods, though he was the god of non-violent death."
"This death drive, or Thanatos instinct, leads humans to partake in self-destructive acts that could end up leading to their death. Aggression and thrill-seeking are thought to stem from the Thanatos instinct."
Does this somehow sounds... familiar? Merciless, opposite and hated by both mortals and gods, though being the most non-violent; self-destructive, aggressive and thrill-seeking... Aren't those the exact description about Zenos?
Zenos was hated by all the people around him, regardless of family, subordinates or enemies. He struck down enemies with one strike, the most non-violent death in battle due to having no need for suffering. He is the opposite of the WoL in all the cases, eventually saying that WoL is his mirror. He very much partakes in thrill-seeking and self-destructive activities.
And while we look further for details, we can notice that Zenos's starting theme is "Thunderer", the theme used for Ascian battles. Endwalker reveals to us that the Ancients' design would go with the person having the name of Greek Deity will also carry the signature weapon of that Deity (for Hermes carries a twin winged snake staff and Hades carries a crystal scepter). So if Zenos really is a Sundered Ascian (for he has the dream of the Final Days in Amaurot since he was young), the moment he picked up the scythe, out of all the weapons in the room, should have alerted us. For he also said that "There is one that I have been meaning to test..." about that scythe, it means that Zenos has always been tempted to pick up the scythe.
So, with all that in mind, would Zenos's Ancient name is Thanatos?
(This is just a crack theory I wrote so I could get the idea off my head, no need to take it too heavily ( ༎ຶ‿༎ຶ ) and thanks for reading)
