Some important details that Spirit Hunter franchise has developed throughout games, light novels, manga and audio drama
Death Mark 1: - Spirits are born from grudge of people who died a horrible death. - A spirit would be on vengeance mode towards those that they deem as the ones causing their death, once they are done they would go dormant until they are woken up by a spirit of higher power rank.
Red Riding Hood DLC: - Spirits can perform possession on humans, although it will exhibit strange behaviors or strange body transformation.
Aoki Shuuen: - There is a possibility of multiple timelines in the Spirit Hunter universe. - Hyaki Yakyo (Night of Hundred Demons Parade) is an event when grotesque dolls gave birth to many spirits. It has happened once in the past. - European-style dolls are mainly porcelain dolls, one house in Europe seems to be the root of the European dolls. - Dolls are souls of human sacrifices as offering to evil spirits to seal them up. In this case, Mary is the first offering to the Master of the Mark. - The golden gun probably exists somewhere in the main timeline.
NG(game + light novel + bad end audio drama): - Asian doll(s) are probably straw doll. - Spirits can have time manipulation ability, the source of this power is unknown, but it apparently affects anything (whether alive or not) in the area of effect. This ability doesn't restrict to high ranked spirits only. - Mirror can be used as a portal to enter the realm of the Death, or for the dead to get into the living realm. - Some spirits just don't deserve salvation. - Spirits can kill other spirits. - Sometimes a half-human half-spirit entity can exist.
Death Mark 2: - Some spirits can take a powerful possession that make them unable to be detected from normal humans. - High ranked spirits maybe able to devour weaker spirits to empower themselves. - Spirits don't actually leave behind grudge, sometimes they leave their hope behind.
Death Mark manga: (spoiler alert) - Mashita's senpai was killed by Shimi-O, or the man who later becomes Shimi-O, but it was under the influence of the Master of the Mark. - The name of the ritual used to purify the Buddha nenjibutsu is 夏越の祓 "Nagoshi no Harae", which has the same "Nagoshi no" part to the ritual to seal Kaguya in NG, 夏越の儀 "Nagoshi no Gi". While "harae" means "purification/exorcism", "Gi" means "ceremony", this means those two rituals could actually be part of each other or even the same. - Yashiki's past self (Masamune) seem to show a behavior similar to a spirit possession as the memory returns. Not sure how it actually occurs because it never appears in the game this way, but the manga shows it.
If I missed anything, please comment so I can update it into the post. Thank you very much for reading.

So I have a little theory about Death Mark 2's story...
Before you get to the introduction scene with Yashiki's narrative, you see a very quick glitching scene of dead Yashiki in the Bad Ending route, and at the end of the Normal Ending route, you heard the voices of the real Michiho and Douryou in the Vermillion Doll calling for Yashiki, then you can go to chapter selection to replay and get the True Ending.
I feel like this those beginning and ending are actually intended, and my theory is that Yashiki first investigated the Shibito case and he reached Bad Ending, resulting in him dead, however, Shibito was still hoping for salvation, and thus, they turned the time back to before Yashiki arrived, so Yashiki can make his way to the Normal Ending. And then as Michiho and Douryou confirmed in the True Ending, their life (and soul) were saved was all thanks to Shibito being completely smitten with Yashiki, so even with Normal Ending, Shibito weren't really satisfied, and they turned the time again so Yashiki can reach true ending.
Spirits with the ability to freeze time or turning time were introduced in NG, Demon Tsukuyomi and Killer Peach, then in the NG light novel, even Urashima Woman can time control as well. So the Shibito have very high capability to control time, noting that they resided in the Clock Tower, a location that really emits time control aura and they are not low rank spirits after all.

It keeps irking me about the writing of Aoki Shuuen, where we saw the "allies" died horrible ways because they picked the destroy route to deal with spirits.
Except Mashita, Mashita is killed by the Master of the Mark wearing Yashiki's body.
And even after that, Mashita still comes back to save Yashiki's soul, he is literally the only ally that Yashiki earned in Aoki Shuuen route. Not to even talking about that Mashita was the one Chekhov's gun to save Yashiki's soul, with the planning of the golden gun and leading all the fallen "allies'" souls back to help destroying Master of the Mark.
While Aoki Shuuen pushed at Yashiki/Mary, it stills has Yashiki/Mashita lingering around.

Yashiki: So my name means "A Man in a Mansion". Mashita: Your name is "One Man with Eigth Husbands". (not correctly Kanji, I used Han Chinese to translate and the actual word of the name means "floor" but it is homophone to "husband")

As we all know, Yashiki and Mashita pretty much are gei, although much of the info we use to deduce such info are most likely from how they interact with each other.
But what if I tell you that if you examine them on themselves without the interaction with one another, they are still, pretty much hinted to be gei?
Let's start with Yashiki, as he is easier to dissect on this aspect.
- Kazuo Yashiki's real name is Masamune Kujou, which is a very interesting name, because his father is Muramasa Kujou, and even the trivia from the devs of the game did confirm that Muramasa gave him the name "Masamune" because the old man believes him to be the "perfect creation". This may not be a problem, until you know old man Muramasa named his daughter Saya, the name literally means "sheath" in Japanese. This shows that the Kujou family has inequality between sons and daughters, and along with the fact it is one of the noble family in Japan, the responsibility to have a good marriage and bear children falls onto the son, in this case, on Masamune Kujou. However, we saw that even before the ignition of the Death Mark event, Masamune was already in his 40s, and yet he is still single.
- Spirits can inflict fear, which means they can detect the person's inner fear and trigger it. In Yashiki's case, many of the spooks he got from spirits are lewd CGs, which proves that he fears of seeing lewd scenes with female bodies. To elaborate on this, the amount of lewd CGs in Yashiki's side of Spirit Hunter franchise is a tantalising amount in comparison to Akira's side.
So being a man in his 40s, bearing responsibility to continue the bloodline yet still single and clearly has fear on seeing naked female bodies, those should be enough to point out that Yashiki is literally gei.
Now we move onto Mashita, the cat guy is trickier to dissect, but it's not impossible.
- Mashita, on first look, seems to be an unkempt man, but on closer look, you can notice only his coat is unkempt, it's too loose. He wears neatly arranged vest, with necktie and stuffs. And asides from his shaggy hair sleepless eyes, bad habits of smoking and drinking and the impossibly rude mouth, you can see him taking care of all the other details. This proves that at some point before, Mashita wasn't the same as he is now, what caused the change though? As we know he was in a trauma after his senpai's untimely death, perhaps this would be the changing point.
- We have never heard Mashita talking about any other people that can be called as close to him, not parents not siblings, and obviously not friends. Just his senpai. This mysterious man left a huge mark on Mashita's life and despite everything of time and space and even job changed, Mashita still hasn't moved on. He still smokes and drinks alcohol (these are even his likes), he still keeps the old oil lighter, and he still wears that strangely loose coat. How much a relationship with a man can be that makes someone unable to move on even when things have changed so much? Obviously, that man wasn't just Mashita's senpai, but someone more, even more than family.
In conclusion, Mashita has already been in a relationship with his senpai, until that man passed away, and he wasn't able to move on, until his fateful meeting with Yashiki.
Yashiki was finally free from his responsibility because he is no longer a Kujou in name and as he met with Mashita, he can work out on their relationship through the spirit hunting cases. Meanwhile, as shown in the Mary's New Color DLC, Mashita leaving his coat on the hanger in Kujou Mansion is a sign that he has finally been able to move on from his past and start anew in his relationship with Yashiki.

Death Mark 2 "Wrong Choices Boogaloo" compilation:
- Yashiki folded paper crane with the school's poster then wrote Sanskrits on his belly while being BDSM by Hanako of the Toilet in chapter 1. You can also have him trying to punch the hoses with the knuckles.
- In chapter 3, Daimon would agree to fish fight Kashima with Yashiki, though he would question the possibility of winning.
- Take the hit from Maruhasi or hit her back with the bag both work in chapter 5.
- Despite being said as a psychedelic mushroom, Fox Laccata has no effect on others asides from Yashiki in Mister Kokkuri's encounter in chapter 5. That says, you can totally try giving either Mashita and Hiroo the piece of the centipede and they will give Yashiki's "funny" look then eat it and then curse him in their brains.
- Using the Abe's tags on Mister Kokkuri's encounter, if you bring Hiroo she won't join the chant, meanwhile Mashita will join the chanting, though it successfully fails.
- Telling Mashita to shoot a warning shot when encountering Sakomoto in the forest will have Yashiki trying to hand the sussy paper bag to Mashita, but Mashita already pulled out his own gun.
- In chapter 7, you can have Mashita (and Yashiki) to do make up bridal face, or offer a dead frog to the Shibito. She chased Mashita no matter what but you get to imagine Mashita wearing bridal make-up (lol).

Shibito is pretty much the funniest antagonist in the Spirit Hunter series because you can't find another ghost that would awooga you like that again.

I think the main focus of Death Mark 2 isn't the hopeless love (teacher-student love or man-spirit love) but rather the answer to the question "What's the real goal you are aiming for?".
See, Death Mark 1 and NG don't touch this, because spirits are just people's lingering grudge the gangs just go to clear all that to save themselves.
However, Death Mark 2 touched this aspect. Because love without a purpose is empty, and such student-teacher love and man-spirit love are both good example for it. Students are too young to understand their feelings and teachers of course are beyond that age and as Douryou (or Kabi Shibito) said, "Teachers that fall in love with students are disgusting". Of course, man-spirit love is more obvious, this love doesn't lead to anything and doesn't end well too.
Yashiki has been struggling to find an actual reason to continue investigating the spirit cases. This was shown in Red Riding Hood DLC, as he plunged along with Mashita without having any real motivation for it.
The question is finally answer in Death Mark 2, as Yashiki concluded that he wanted to reach his hand as far as possible to as many humans or spirits alike. We saw this kind of enlightenment with Mashita in Red Riding Hood DLC, as he figured that he is fit for investigating spirit cases but it wasn't made clear, although it is also made clear in Death Mark 2 as well.
Another point to note on this is the writing on the spirits. They aren't pure malevolent like some in Death Mark 1 and NG, namely Shimi-O, Miss Zoo and Kakuya but rather similar to Hanahiko, Kurachayome, Urashima Woman and Killer Peach - They want to be saved. In NG and Death Mark 1, this aspect isn't touched, and you have to figure it out yourself, in Death Mark 2, it's shown blatantly. I have to say that makes the story of spirits more sad and depressing, as after all, in the end, they were mistreated people who sought salvation.
I hope that clears out some confusion.
