Hello! I appreciate your opinion, and I understand where you are coming from completely. I love hearing other points of view and being challenged to think in ways I might not have considered before.

I do, however, have a few things to add about the way in which you've chosen to deliver this message.

Thanks for sharing your opinion with me, but the fact that you've criticized me for my enjoyment of a certain piece of media in a certain way and then used pretty antagonistic terms to describe the characters in that piece of media seems unnecessary.

Good news! You can interpret art and media however you want to interpret art and media! If you didn't see a romantic aspect of any given ship in any given show/book/movie/work, that's perfectly fine, and all it means is that your personal experience of that work is slightly different than mine. And not only is that okay, but it's also kind of beautiful.

I can't help but wonder what the goal was here. What was the intention? What could you possibly hope to gain from this interaction other than to assert your dominance and emphasize that you are in fact the superior media enjoyer by...putting other people down, in search of what I can only imagine is some sort of satisfaction in telling someone their opinion doesn't matter?

I sincerely hope that you understand, first and foremost, that I am a human being. I am, in fact, not an amalgamation of all the things you hate about consumer media culture or the perceived lack of "media literacy". I am a human being who loves stories, and who loves love. I'm not trying to force ideas on anyone, nor am I suggesting that anyone who views anything differently than me is wrong in any way.

All this to say: Art is subjective, my friend. Also, don't be mean to people. Your feelings, thoughts, and opinions are all completely valid, but the way in which you've attempted to tear me down is not.

Take a walk. Take a nap. Take a breath. Don't take it out on a human person.

What was your first fandom (reading and/or writing)? Reading?  Highlander (I come from the time of geocities and angelfire, when we could not dream of the wonder of A03). Writing?  There’s a fairly appalling Smallville story that nobody except me has ever seen, but that still exists in my g-docs for my periodic nostaligia.

What was the first story you ever wrote (even if it was never posted) and what made you decide to write it? I co-wrote a Merlin University AU with a friend that has never seen the light of day because it was never quite finished.  It was 70% about the two of us missing each other, and 30% about both of us missing Edinburgh and has so many in jokes.  It also - bafflingly - kind of made Arthur and Merlin into actual friends (instead of boys with deep slashy tension).  I’m still not sure how we achieved that.

What's a piece of advice you would give to your younger fic-writing self? Be less afraid of what other people will think of you, and acknowledge that it has value if it makes you happy and you enjoyed writing it.

What's an early fandom interaction that stuck with you (be it a nice comment, a friend you made, a fic that got a lot of feedback etc.)? I think it’s just finding people who think like you do.  I’ve been a part of fandom for a lot longer than I’ve been posting in fandom, and some of my best friends are people I met in fandom and then kept long after we each moved on to different areas of the internet.  There’s something just about finding the people who share the same language that you do that is so important.

Post a sentence or two from one of your older fics, and a sentence or two from a newer one (if you want). From an Old Guard Academic AU that I co-wrote with the same friend I co-wrote the Merlin Academic AU (there’s a theme here), and that we should really finish and post because it’s actually like 95% done. The shape of their conversations change.  They become intimate in a way that he associates with late nights, body-warmed rumpled sheets, and the shelter of darkness.  They share stories dredged up from childhood, and things he's not sure he's ever told anyone else before.  The connection of the phone line, of Joe's quiet voice across thousands of miles, feels fragile and precious, and like they're building the foundation for something unshakeable and real. And for entertainment value, the first few lines of the Merlin Academic AU that will probably never be finished. Arthur sighed irritably and marched down the front walk to yank the horse out of range of the roses and tie him up where he couldn’t do any damage.  He walked back to loom over the man on the ground and asked again, “And who the hell are you?” The man grinned suddenly, “I’m Herne the Hunter.” Arthur blinked, “Come again?” He gestured vaguely, “Herne the Hunter, Elizabethan conceptualization of the Celtic deity Cernunnos,” he paused then added, “or possibly of the Anglo-Saxon god Woden.  It depends on which poorly researched popular theory you buy into.” Arthur raised an eyebrow, “You expect me to believe that the leader of the Wild Hunt can’t manage to stay on his own horse?” Herne, for lack of a better name, looked annoyed, “Obviously I’m not actually Herne the Hunter.”

Q: How do they feel about public displays of romantic affection? Does it make them uncomfortable? How do they feel if a romantic partner kisses them in public?

A: I think it's something that catches Helene off guard at first, but grows to actually love it. Helene loves to feel coveted and adored, but the entirety of her adolescence she spent being avoided, ostracized, bullied, and generally treated as if she was a bad omen. Even the people who didn't necessarily dislike her avoided being seen with her. The idea that someone would publicly be affectionate with her was jarring at first, but now she loves it. She's also starting to realize just how beautiful she is, especially with how much people like Strahd or Vasili have inflated her ego, and the idea that other people around her might want her but the person with her is 'claiming' her by giving her public physical affection is really thrilling to her. Helene has walked through Barovia Village on Strahd's arm and enjoyed the attention (no matter how negative) it got her, and she's also walked through Vallaki on Vasili's arm and enjoyed the attention that got her. Both of them held her to them very possessively, which is just something she really enjoys.

Q: Do they believe in love at first sight? Have they ever developed a crush or romantic (or erotic) fixation upon a stranger based on their appearance alone?

A: Love at first sight? No. Connection? Yes. Helene only feels attraction towards someone if she's formed a connection with them. And admittedly, she develops those connections pretty quickly. If she doesn't feel that sort of string tying her to someone the first time she meets them. Though just because she does feel that connection doesn't mean it'll necessarily form into a romantic relationship. It's more like... she sees the string coming from them and depending on circumstances and how they interact, the string may or may not connect to her. Sometimes she doesn't realize the connection has formed, sometimes she's very instantly aware.

For instance, when Helene met Vasili for the first time, she immediately felt it, but she wasn't consciously aware of it. She just thought "I want to know more about this man. I want him to know more about me." And instantly started thinking up ways she could possibly meet with him in private to have conversations (I suppose not too dissimilar to her wanting to initially talk to Strahd to "gather information" when she first got to Barovia). Gods, she even curtsied to Vasili when they first met. He still teases her about it.

(For reference, Helene's so full of love and has formed a number of romantic entanglements at the same time, she views them all as strings of fate that come from her in different places and attach to those people. Sometimes they get tangled because they conflict, like Strahd's and Vasili's which come from the same place over her heart and twist together.)

Q: Does your OC find it easy to make friends? Or are there barriers to them doing so? If so then are these due to issues of inclination, communication, or something else entirely?

A: God, no. Helene's good at being polite and having social pleasantries (even in the face of her preference for bluntness), but she keeps most people at an arm's length distance. She has a hard time trusting anyone would want to be her friend due to her upbringing, and on top of that, she's pretty judgemental herself. Helene holds people to a high standard unless they manage to charm and wiggle their way past her defenses. She's largely intolerant of incompetence, willful ignorance, or people who are unnecessarily belligerent.

Q: What qualities does your OC most value in a friend? Loyalty? Shared sense of humour? Or something else?

A: Consistency, loyalty, intelligence, skill, humor, and interestingly, a willingness to be silly and let loose. She likes when people are down-to-earth and let themselves be vulnerable -- especially if they do that only around her almost exclusively. Take Strahd for example, he must be perfect at all times... but sometimes he'll let himself not be in front of her, and it makes her feel wholly special, and it makes her love him all the more.

Q: Is your OC able to love without necessarily needing or expecting reciprocation or reward? Or are all their relationships to some extent transactional? Have they ever loved another person unconditionally, whether a child or another adult?

A: Helene doesn't need reciprocation to love someone in an all-consuming way. Helene gets obsessive about it. Does she want reciprocation? Absolutely. That's all she wants. But she doesn't need it to love someone.

She does have BPD though, so when she splits on someone, her love isn't conditional, but her affection might be. Helene's love for Strahd is unconditional -- no matter what he does, she'll never stop loving him. And honestly, non-romantically speaking, her love for Con is unconditional.

Q: Is your OC particularly skilled at flirting? Have they had to practice this or does it just happen naturally?

A: I think it depends entirely on the situation and the person. Helene has a hard time flirting with someone if she's in front of other people besides that person because of social anxiety. And if she's particularly interested in someone and feeling particularly off-balance, she might flirt a little awkwardly. But otherwise, Helene's very... intense with her flirting. Long-held stares, getting very close, touches along their arms or face or neck. She's direct and does not mince words, but she isn't as blatant as 'hey, I want to fuck'. Helene is poetic but macabre, and will compliment someone by the way they smell, or the way their lips curl oh so cutely when they're lost in thought, or remark on their dark circles as being an attractive sign of dedication to their interests that they're willing to lose sleep over it. She likes pinning people with her gaze, too.

Q: What seduction techniques are most likely to be effective when it comes to your OC? Are there some things guaranteed to get them going? Or are they immune to such things?

A: The same things that she uses on other people are what would work on her. Being intense, passionate, show a willingness to violently protect the things you love. Woo her with strange compliments, declarations of love, remark on her skill and prowess in the things she dedicates her time to. She's also one of those people where if she sees you get into a fight or rip something apart she thinks "hot", lmao. Whisk her away for a romantic getaway or even a mischievous outing to go play and have fun together. Quality time and giving her rapt attention are very important to her. She's also a bit of a sapiosexual, unfortunately, so showing your own skill and intelligence for something you're passionate about is very attractive to her.

Q: After the initial fires of passion cool to some degree, what would keep your OC engaged in a relationship? Shared goals? Similar values? Or contented companionship?

A: Passion really never cools for Helene. But in the inbetween moments, intellectual pursuits pursued together, friendly competition (whether that be in a game of chess or wildly opposing views on how something should be done), spending quality time together doing things like reading poetry or going on picnics or sharing interests. Compatible values do have factor in somehow, for sure. Like with Milivoj, it almost seems like it shouldn't work between them with her intense dour nature and his flippant, down to earth, mischievous optimistic nature. But Milivoj brings out the kid in her that never got to have a childhood, brings out her silly side, her mischievous nature that's always been in her. And she makes him think things through a little more, makes him consider things more deeply and more fully.

Q: Which of your OC's qualities makes them the most proud? Do they think more people should be like them in this regard? Or do they quite like being rare in possessing it?

A: Her combat prowess or her intelligence, I can't decide. I think her ability to assess a situation, analyze it from every angle, decide the best way to approach it, is something she's very proud of. Just how generally observant she is. Something that is obvious to her and isn't obvious to someone else, she might get unfairly frustrated at them for not noticing and think they may be dense. I think she does think it would be better if people possessed these qualities, but at the same time, she enjoys feeling special and unique more than anything. She wants to be best in class, praised for something that others don't possess.

Q: Has your OC always had the same opinion of themselves or has this changed over time? Have they learned to love themselves - perhaps with the help of others - as their journey progressed? Or have the consequences of their actions only served to erode their sense of self-worth?

A: Oof. Helene's self-worth is in constant flux. She's a very black and white thinker at times, all or nothing. So while her self-worth was pretty shit growing up, recently it's started being built up by new friends and lovers, especially as she is regaining her divinity (which is where the places a lot of her worth). But whenever she commits an evil action like killing someone who might not have deserved it, or manipulate people for her own gain, Helene sees herself as this dark creature unworthy of love. Though Strahd has been striving to make it so she embraces her darkness and loves herself because of it.

A Shrimp Really DID Fry This Rice

It’s your turn on cooking duty, and you know exactly what you want to make: delicious pizzas! The kitchens are well stocked today; *too* well-stocked, in fact, because there are way too many choices for toppings, with everything you can imagine from meat to veggies to more unorthodox choices like chocolate or mapo tofu. Will you and your cooking partner come up with a brilliant new recipe, or spend the entire time arguing over whether or not that pineapple belongs on the pizza? [Grants Authority +1]

Cooking, of course! What better way to create harmony between two people than to share a meal together? But, as with any meal, the one meant for Ryoma, Corrin, and any of Nohr or Hoshido who wish to join them must be prepared. And thus, the responsibility falls onto them. The two who happened to stumble into the kitchen during a large surplus, where the ovens are hot with all sorts of pies being made for every occasion. Ryoma happened to catch one on the way out, and after but a single glance, he knew it would be the perfect dish. Pizzas are large and ideal for sharing, and their versatility means there can exist a little something from everyone. This ensures that all who enjoy it have their own preferred taste, but more importantly, allows differences to come together. Unity is what pizza creates.

“Why don’t we try our hand at what that man just walked out with?” Ryoma asks, now that they’ve gotten there. The countertops and varied shelves are mostly in order, but a few key ingredients--like opened jars of sauce and half-cut sausages--lay out in the open. The prince is highly perceptive, sure, but even Corrin would be able to infer some of the recipe from their surroundings. “It appeared simple enough. Some kind of bread with cheese, and then topped with various meats and vegetables. I’ll admit this will be my first time with such a dish, but attempting new things is how we learn and grow.” 

And besides, even if they manage to fail miserably at the task, they can laugh their mistakes away and enjoy the unique experience they had. Ryoma has since come to grips with the fact that he is in a foreign land, and though he shall forever hold onto the values and the customs of Hoshido--for they are home to him--there must also be room in his heart for the outside world. By the time he leaves the academy, he will be a diplomat. He will have to not only interact with, but come to intimately know leaders from strange places. He will have to shake their hands, read their books, and above all, eat their pizzas. So why not get a little experience in at the academy? He’s here to teach, but nothing tells him he cannot also learn. This is how he will grow, how he will hone more than just his blade, so that he may be someone Hoshido can look to not only in times of war, but in peace as well.

Figuring Corrin would have no reason to disagree, he begins preparations right away. Sleeves roll to reveal a set of broad forearms, and he takes great care to thoroughly wash his hands before touching any food. First is the dough, he figures. That much he has made before, and can replicate with ease. Into a bowl goes some warm water, flour, oil, yeast, and a bit of salt and sugar. Ryoma, in spite of being a high prince, has no qualms with eating simple foods. He has eaten doughy delights a thousand times, and will a thousand times more. So the motions for how to produce them are, by now, muscle memory to him. He kneads and grinds, folds and massages, until the product slowly starts to take shape. It’ll be a while before they have anything they can really work with though, so his head turns to Corrin--watching for what she decides to busy herself with.

At this early stage in their dish, she has a free range of options available to her. Making the perfect sauce, mixing their desired selection of cheeses, prepping toppings of whatever kind she’d like--the possibilities are nearly limitless with pizza. And so Ryoma would be content to simply observe. To watch for what she decides to take up, which would maybe tell him something about her character. Is she quick to prioritize the foundational steps and work on the sauce? or maybe she has a vision for the finished product, and wants to pick out what will go on last? 

Either way, he’s probably reading too far into it. Force of habit, on account of, y’know, having her removed from his family a handful of times.

Adjusting to Face-to-Face Classes: My Journey Back to Campus

Hi, I'm Caila Mary Colibao, and I'm studying social work. I'll share why I picked this course and how I'm adjusting to being back in face-to-face classes.  

Introducing myself and my course: I'm Caila, and I'm studying social work because I've always been curious about assessing individuals' problems, fighting for fairness, and helping people get back on track. I chose this course because I want to help others understand why people act in different ways.  

Coping with the Transition Back to Face-to-Face Classes: Transitioning from online to face-to-face classes wasn't exactly what I expected, especially after getting used to the comfort of online classes. However, I've found ways to cope in this new environment. Here are a few strategies that have helped me get back to face-to-face classes:

1. Have some personal time: go for a walk, date yourself, and enjoy being alone. This will help you to reset your mind from everything that was happening.  

2. Deal with Stress: Find ways to relax when you feel stressed, like taking deep breaths, going for a walk, or doing something you enjoy.  

3. Balance Work and Fun: Make sure you spend time both studying and having fun with friends. It's important to still have time to enjoy.

4. Get Help from Others: Surround yourself with people who can support you, like friends, classmates, or professors.

June 5: Guest Lecture and Exchange Activity at Musashi University

Today, we were able to talk with local Japanese students and receive a guest lecture at Musashi University (武蔵大学).

One thing I was able to take away from the lecture is that the way language is learned in different parts of the world is completely opposite to how language is learned in the U.S.

In Japan, many people dislike being seen as show offs, so, for example, even if someone is quite good at a language they are learning, they will sometimes speak with a strong Japanese accent on purpose so as to not stand out. While the professor continued to talk about the effects this has on learning, my thoughts headed more so in the direction of how such a cultural difference could affect a nation or people group on the macro scale.

In the U.S., I would argue that most people still probably don’t want to be seen as arrogant, but the distinction here is that most people (at least the ones I have had classes with) also don’t mind showing off once in a while when they get the opportunity. I would posit that the difference comes from the desire to stand out. In the U.S., standing out is generally considered a good thing as we have a highly individualistic society, and people tend to seek personal recognition for their achievements. Many people of Japan, on the other hand, value the effort of a group far more than the effort of an individual, and standing out is not necessarily a good thing in many cases.

You might ask: what is the significance of this? Or maybe even: why do you keep waffling on about this silly subject? Well to answer your questions, I believe considering cultural differences such as these could, even on the surface, bring people closer together as they can better communicate how they feel and less frequently get the wrong message across. However, if you look deeper than this and are able to recognize that it is possible to go about your life in a completely different (but not necessarily less correct) manner, you can look at the world much more objectively and strive for changes to make your own life and community better. The more we can think objectively, the easier it will be to break free of cultural vices that hold us back as a society. I believe this is the key advantage those of us who study abroad are able to gain and why I have become a true believer in the practice after my two trips.

Anyway, although I could probably write a 20 page paper on that subject, I will stop here to help my professor keep his sanity (although I’m sure he and all of you have probably given up by now).

After the lecture, we were able to do an interactive activity where we shared about ourselves with the local students in small groups. Our group was full of quiet girls who were a bit shy at first, but after some prodding we were able to have a very interesting conversation which I will talk a bit about for the academic reflection section.

When we were finished with the activity we were able to grab lunch and were given a brief tour of the campus before being dismissed. I chose to walk back after taking the train to Ilebukuro and got to explore more of the city.

Academic Reflection:

The activity today was a treat because we were all able to learn from each other and examine the cultural differences between ourselves. The question our group was asked was whether one day A.I. will become companions to many of us humans and what effects this could have on society. It seemed that those of us from the U.S. were unilaterally against the idea of having A.I. be our companions and were concerned about the loneliness such a societal change could bring. The Japanese students on the other hand were a bit more divided and some seemed to think such a development could help certain people who are isolated feel less lonely.

From what I have been able to observe, here in Japan, people are much more isolated from each other than in the U.S. (A good example of this in practice is that many restaurants have dividers between peoples seats to make interaction more difficult. I have not been able to determine a specific source to this issue, but I do have a few hypotheses). I am thinking that it is this increased isolation from one another that is the cause of this difference in answer.

Based on what I have learned about human psychology from my own observations and what I have learned from others, the more isolated someone feels, the more willing they are to fabricate a world in which they are not isolated (Our class’s prior conversation about otaku culture relates nicely to this). I believe what I have observed in my short time here in Japan is this very phenomenon, and I am excited to test this hypothesis as I continue my observations.

P.S. although I call it a hypothesis, at this point it is much more of an opinion based on my observations. I have no evidence to back up these observations, so there is a high possibility of outliers.

Kyoto travel log, 2 weeks in

Take a night walk with me, through Kyoto...

This is my 2-week update since arriving in Kyoto. I cannot believe it’s been 2 weeks!

I love Kyoto’s walkability

Look at this night walk and how I’m taking pictures while I’m walking (probably should be a little more cautious; I am a foreigner after all). The streetlamps provide direction; there are always people at pedestrian crossings, and in general people are just minding their own business quietly, sharing the road. I have always loved the enveloping quality of the night and long to take walks, yet I never felt comfortable doing so in California. I arrive at a fork in the road in a residential neighborhood and each way down is rows and rows of houses but I feel no anxiety or rush.

Things I’ve been struggling with

There are some things that I’ve been struggling with that I struggle to put into words... the first has to do with racism and misunderstandings.

The thing is, when you travel abroad, people view you as an ambassador of your country, while I’ve only ever viewed myself as a distinct individual who doesn’t associate strongly with any group. When I hang out with myself, I simply exist —  I am not consciously in the act of communicating things and preferences just by the way I do certain things. When you’re with new people especially those who have come from a different mode of life the differences between you become extremely obvious and perceivable.

It is a bit annoying when you insist that your nationality does not define you and others insist it does more than you think because they are not clouded by familiarity bias when they look at you.

I am also very aware of the fact that outside the Bay Area/LA/UC system where I go to school, “Asian-American” is a category that is not well-understood. I have been aware of this since the first time I traveled outside of the country and I could do a separate entry on the different ways I have been treated by Chinese people, non-Asian Americans, etc. But the thrust of it is: a lot of people still do not understand the legitimate lived experience of being both Asian and American. “But your face is Asian…” is a legitimate protest to them when you insist your values are very Westernized and you’ve been brought up reading Western Enlightenment thinkers, learning a Western conception of rights/duties/obligations, etc. (I am aware that everything I say must be broad and sweeping). And there is a mutualistic solidarity between you and the students who have grown up in the Asian country your “people” supposedly belong to, because you are both foreigners here, and your foreign awkwardness is what drives you together, but this social glue is not because you belong to a category of others who “look like” you.

FOMO and energy management as an introvert.

I’m immensely bothered by the concept of ticking time and the thought of wasted opportunities. I want to do everything at once. (As pressuring and stressful this is, it can also be a positive thing) There are very few things I would not do, only things I decide to not invest into for the time being.

It’s so hard being in a foreign country being completely surrounded by possibilities and new people. I’ve reached a point where, the beats of public transportation no longer give me an anxiety spike (can’t understand 90% of what the announcer on the bus is saying, but I know what “tsugi wa ____” means), and now it’s just the thought that I could, no should, be hanging out with this group of people, no that group of people. Genuinely positive experiences, I always feel great and fired-up after grabbing dinner and bonding with new people. But I am very bad at recognizing the signs of social burn-out until I wake up one day and feel like I really cannot leave the house anymore and need to find ways to recharge.

Another thing is, I am affected differently by different types of social interaction. I do very well at one-on-ones. There is usually more of a nurturing, positive-relating to these interactions. Then there are hangouts where you’re in a group of people exploring manga shops, talking about dirty manga/anime tropes, and these are super fun and banter-y and the well never runs dry of things to talk about, but these are tiring to me, and somehow I end up questioning the way I present myself afterward more in group settings than in individual settings.

I need some kind of reliable wind-down, something that reminds me of home. Something not energy-charged, so I can remember who I am and why I came here.

Direct people can find it hard to resist their urges and impulses. In fact, when they really want something it's hard for them to keep their desire in check. If you find it all too easy to sacrifice your long-term goals for instant gratification, or wake up with a major headache the next morning, this might be an aspect of your life that would benefit from a bit more concentration.

Your real interests lie in creative activities. You can seem like quite a private person, but you're equally comfortable pursuing your interests with a group of like-minded people or by yourself. People with analytical attitudes are true critical thinkers and like to consider each situation on its own merits in order to avoid being influenced by sentimentality or tradition. This leaves them free to think about every angle and option before making their own judgement. Dreamers get very excited by the prospect of new ideas and ways of seeing the world, but they tend to lose their way in theoretical possibilities and flights of fancy.
