⁣ Canon Powershot SX730 HS ⁣ Taken on 04/03/2019.⁣ ⁣ #Throwbackthursday | The western province of Imperia in the northwestern region of Liguria has to be one of the most enchanting areas in the whole of Italy — but also one of the least explored.⁣ ⁣ That alone is simply astonishing given the gradually growing popularity of the coastal towns even along the 'Riviera dei Fiori' ('Riviera of Flowers') with Sanremo as the centrepiece. But I found it much more fun and rewarding to go off the tourist trail by the sea and delve into the quiet, mysterious hinterland that attracrs only the most curious, adventurous kind of visitor.⁣ ⁣ For example, as you enter the Nervia valley in the Regional Natural Park of the Ligurian Alps, the silvery green of the many olive groves that extend over the hilly terraces becomes more sparse and gives space to the woods of chestnut and coniferous trees that become thicker.⁣ ⁣ And at the foot of this park stands the once fortified village of Pigna — an intriguing bundle of antique stone houses stood close together on a steep hillside. Its name is attributed to the little circular streets called 'chibi' which run across the hillside called 'pigna' meaning 'pinecone'.⁣ ⁣ If you stand by the bridge – the main entrance to the village – you'll be spellbound like I was by the waterfall-like effect of the stone houses built on top of one another, with the main church towering at the top. Canon Powershot SX730 HS Taken on 04/01/2018. Bienno is an ancient medieval village situated in 'Val Camonica' in the province of Brescia. It has attracted a greater number of visitors in recent years thanks to being awarded the title of "One of the most beautiful villages in Italy". And with its shaded alleyways, picturesque courtyards, frescoed churches, green mountains and lush hills, Bienno more than deserves it. Historically Bienno was an important place for processing wrought iron by means of hammers driven by water wheels, which you can find out more about by visiting the 'Museo Etnografico del Ferro' ('The Forge Museum') founded in 1988. Walking through the streets of the historic centre, I loved how the courtyards, squares and streets came alive thanks to the sculptors, artisans and painters who were busy working in their workshops, still creating unique and original artifacts. I only wish I'd had enough room in my backpack to buy and bring some of those rare treasures back home. To reach this historical gem of a village, you first need to take a train ('Trenord') from Brescia to Cogno-Esine station. Then, walk to the town centre in Esine and take a bus ('SAV') to Bienno.
