Lynn Hsu.
Lynn tells us about her methods for making her wonderful cartoons featured in The New Yorker and many other publications this week!
Bio: I worked as an architect for many years before changing paths to become a cartoonist and writer. While working as an architect, I dabbled in printmaking, painting, and humor writing, often collaborating with sketch comedy groups at ImprovBoston. When the theater shut down during the pandemic, I started cartooning, which I found therapeutic and fun, as it combined my love of drawing with humor writing. Online classes taught by Emily Flake, Amy Kurzweil, and other talented people, were incredibly helpful and inspiring. In 2022, I sold my first cartoon (below) to The New Yorker and soon after, my first Daily Shouts piece.

My work has also appeared in publications such as Alta Journal, Air Mail, Weekly Humorist, Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, WSJ, and The American Bystander (cartoon below).

While I mostly focus on humor, I occasionally write darker stories for horror and sci-fi magazines like Space & Time. Currently, I reside in Boston with my husband, twin boys, and dog, Mochi, who provides emotional support when my work is rejected
Tumblr media
Once I have a list of ideas and rough sketches, I draw the cartoon on my Samsung Galaxy Book 2-in-1 convertible laptop. It has a small built-in pen that comes with it. My preferred app is Clip Studio Paint, which is a less expensive alternative to Photoshop. I’m still experimenting with different brushes and washes in my work. For my posture, I use an adjustable stand by Lpoake. For my sanity, I often work on the porch so I can get some fresh air and vitamin D. Mochi keeps me company and nudges me periodically for attention.
Tumblr media
Tool I wish I could use better: Watercolor. I love painting with oil and acrylics, but I struggle with washes and hope to improve.
Tool I wish I existed: A magic chair that heals back and shoulder pain (and also teleports you to any location in the world).
Tricks: Not a fancy trick, but I’ve been using Google Keep to jot ideas down in an organized way when I don’t have my sketchbook with me. I can access this list via phone, tablet, or computer.
Misc: Getting feedback on your work is invaluable. Sometimes, I’ll draw a cartoon and think it’s hilarious, but then I show it to my husband, who doesn’t understand the caption or the sketch. I’m fortunate to have found a group of supportive cartoonists with whom I can share my work and exchange comments on a regular basis. Online classes and workshops are also great ways to learn a new craft and meet other amazing artists, writers, and humorists.

It’s pretty easy to piss people off on Reddit. Less so to piss off seemingly everyone on the platform.
Still, Reddit’s management has succeeded in doing just that as it weathers protests over its decision to charge for access to its API. That ruling risks putting the company in a death spiral as users revolt, the most dedicated community caretakers quit, and the vibrant discussions move to other platforms.
The company’s changes to its data access policies effectively price out third-party developers who make mobile applications for browsing Reddit; two of the most popular options, Reddit Is Fun and Apollo, which together have over 41 million downloads, are both shutting down. After some initial backlash from users and disability advocates who said Reddit’s changes would adversely affect accessibility-focused apps aimed at people with dyslexia or vision impairments, Reddit said it would exempt those apps from the price hikes. Those apps also have far smaller user bases than Apollo or RIF.
Reddit’s plans—driven by an urge to make the company more profitable as it inches toward going public—sparked a protest across nearly 9,000 subreddits, where moderators of those communities switched their groups to private mode, preventing anyone from accessing them. Many of those subs remain inaccessible four days later, and their moderators say they plan to keep up the blackout indefinitely. (Disclosure: WIRED is a publication of Conde Nast, whose parent company, Advance Publications, has an ownership stake in Reddit.)
However unfazed Reddit execs appear to be, this subreddit seppuku sure does seem like a surefire way to sink the company. But does it really signal the death of Reddit?
“I can't see it as anything but that,” says Rory Mir, an associate director of community organizing at the Electronic Frontier Foundation. (Earlier this week, Mir wrote about what Reddit got wrong.) “Like with Twitter, it's not a big collapse when a social media website starts to die, but it is a slow attrition unless they change their course. The longer they stay in their position, the more loss of users and content they’re going to face.”
The unrest at Reddit is the latest in a string of social media upheavals that have seemingly pitted profit-hungry companies against their users. Platforms like Reddit, Twitter, or even Amazon that started operating at a loss in order to grow their user base eventually face pressures to further monetize their traffic. When a site sidelines the wants and needs of its users in the pursuit of profit, that leads to a downturn—and potential death of the platform—that author Cory Doctorow has termed “enshittification.”
“Any plan that involves endless and continuous growth is bound to run into scale issues, which is where I think Reddit and Twitter are running into problems,” Mir says. “You can’t inflate the balloon forever. It will pop at some point.”
Amy Bruckman is a regents' professor and senior associate chair at Georgia Institute of Technology’s School of Interactive Computing. She has also contributed to WIRED and is a moderator of several subreddits, including the very popular r/science, which is restricted until Monday. Bruckman says this era of social media has been rife with sudden changes. “There was an extended period of years, maybe even a decade, where it felt like the way things are is the way they always will be,” she says. “And everything is suddenly shifted.”
Reddit charging for access to its API is also about more than just third-party clients, Bruckman says. A move like this has angered so many people on Reddit because it feels like a betrayal of the community’s trust. It might be a vocal minority of users who are pissed off about the changes, but they’re the people who volunteer their time to keep communities functional—and they’re arguably the most important users on the site.
“Beyond the fact that it’s in a dozen ways harder to do our job, it’s also just the case that Reddit felt more like an open platform where innovation by committed users was encouraged,” Bruckman says. “And this feels like it's trampling on that.”
Reddit has denied that it is specifically targeting third-party apps like Apollo and RIF. The company initially said that limiting its API access is a move meant to control the flow of data being gobbled up by generative artificial intelligence companies like OpenAI training their large language models. But in an interview with NPR, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman said limiting third-party access will also help Reddit keep control over how it displays ads—the company’s primary source of income—to users. Force everyone to interact on one app, and it’s easier to fill their feeds with whatever advertising you want.
“They’re shooting themselves in the foot,” Mir says. “The content of the users is what makes the platform worth visiting. These hosts kind of run into this confusion that their hosting is the reason people are going there, but it’s really for the other users on the medium.”
And those users are bailing. Bruckman says she knows a moderator who has already quit, saying it wasn’t worth the energy to devote so much time to a company that can just toss all that effort aside. Like with Twitter, no clear alternative has emerged as a replacement. Bruckman advocates for public funding of a nonprofit version of something akin to Reddit. Some more casual users say they’re going back to Tumblr, which is still recovering from its own corporate sanitization in 2018.
Still, Mir says, there’s a real hunger for stability on a platform. It’s part of the reason sites like Reddit and Twitter have gotten so big. There are people who have had the same email address for 30 years or the same username on Reddit for a decade. If users have invested significant time in a community, it’s going to be a pain to find something amid the sea of federated upstarts that all claim to be the next best thing.
Clearly, Reddit is hoping that inertia and customer loyalty keep people on its site. Even if users grumble about losing their favorite app, the company is expecting they’ll just cave and download the official app. That may work on your typical user, but it’s not going to be as easy to convert the mods—especially ones who feel burned by Reddit’s monetary machinations.
Mir offers another business metaphor for the tension on Reddit: “If you have a really good music venue, but you break relations with every notable artist, you’re not going to be a very successful venue. You need to really prioritize the needs of the folks providing the value on your platform.”

New York's Most Stylish Street Clothes
For shopping, brands, or styles you're after, New York is a haven for fashion lovers. And no velvet rope or influential status is required - just an understanding of where to to for the latest fashions. The NYFW Street Style fashion show was no exception to the general rule. Showgoers gave their own spin to the latest fashions. Check out the top outfits of this year's shows and presentations. Eva Chen Eva Chen, Instagram's first head of fashion partnerships, is a smart and experienced person. Prior to joining Instagram, Eva Chen was the editor-in-chief of Lucky magazine and the director of beauty and health at Teen Vogue. The Chinese American editor has a sharp sense of style as well as optimism. She is also the author of books for children. She is adamantly rooted in her hometown of Manhattan, despite studying pre-med at Johns Hopkins University. She says that she grew up in a place that values friendship and family bonds. In her time as editor at Lucky, Chen oversaw the magazine's transformation into a young and contemporary brand. She also launched the online store, Lucky Shops. In April of 2013, she was appointed editor-in-chief by Conde Nast's Anna Wintour. She was the youngest editor in chief in the history of the magazine. Katya Tolstova New York is the fashion capital of the world and the streetwear industry is one that is always in high demand. This week, our editors rounded the most fashionable streetwear moments from New york's most thrilling fashion shows. This gorgeous monochromatic neon pink set from Katya Tolstova captivated us. It was worn with no accessories, including an appropriate trench coat as well as the small lavender bag. The same style can be achieved with only a handful of pieces in your closet. An outfit of wide-leg, cropped pants and a shirt that has a striped pattern can be equally effective. This is a stylish look you can wear over and over and. The secret to making it work is to choose the right colors and textures, and to add a funky twist with a few strategically placed accessories. Sarah Lysanders British model Sarah Lysander is a rising popular fashion model. She has over 200k followers on her Instagram account and is well popular for her swimwear brand, Lysander Swim, and her styled editorial shoots. She has a large following for her Instagram page, which she manages herself. Her Instagram page has the most impressive feature: she makes use of the modern technology like AR to create engaging images that you can interact. With her "Fun With" tagline she hopes to bring some happiness into the lives and days of her followers. Chloe King Chloe King is a typical teenage girl, except that she is gifted with extra powers and the gift of nine lives. She is part of the Mai race and, as the "Uniter," she must fight for the Mai and human races to stop a prophecy that will cause them to be destroyed. Samuels does an amazing job of balancing a sense of confusion and excitement when Chloe discovers that she is part of a long-lost mythology. Although Amy (Grace Phipps) and Paul (Hi Kong Lee) are somewhat overbearing They are nevertheless believable as her most trusted friends. While the show can take a bit to start, it picks up quickly once it's in motion. While the story isn't speedy and the love stories isn't as exciting yet, it's written well enough to keep the viewers interested. Kathy Lee

A new study on marine mammal longevity suggests significant progress in animal welfare
Tumblr media
- By Nuadox Crew -
A recent study led by Species360 and University of Southern Denmark Research Scientist Dr. Morgane Tidière; and co-authored by 41 researchers from various institutions worldwide has revealed significant improvements in the longevity and welfare of marine mammals in zoos and aquariums.
The study employed statistical methods similar to those used for assessing improvements in human population welfare, utilizing 200 years of data from the Species360 Zoological Information Management System (ZIMS) which is the largest database of information on wildlife in human care. It focused on four marine mammal species: the harbor seal, California sea lion, polar bear, and common bottlenose dolphin.
Here are key findings and highlights:
Longevity advancements: The research found that these four marine mammal species are living longer in zoological institutions compared to the past, primarily due to advances in animal care practices centered on animal welfare including veterinary care, environmental enrichment, nutrition, and positive reinforcement training. The life expectancy of the studied species has increased three-fold, with a notable decrease (up to 31%) in deaths during the first year of life over the last century in zoos and aquariums.
Comparative lifespan: Marine mammal species in zoos and aquariums are living two to three times longer than their counterparts in the wild.
Collaborative efforts: These improvements have been made possible through the collaboration of regional and national zoo associations, accreditation standards, breeding programs, shared databases, and professional networks, fostering knowledge sharing and collectively improving animal welfare.
Global impact: The study underscores that these results reflect the average welfare of marine mammals in Species360 member facilities and do not represent a global minimum standard. Nonetheless, they highlight positive progress in the management and care of animals in leading zoological facilities.
Policy implications: The study's findings may inform future policy decisions regarding the welfare of animals in zoos and aquariums. Preliminary results have already influenced legislative decisions in France and Spain, guiding evidence-based choices for marine mammal care in these settings.
Overall, the study indicates a positive trend in enhancing the welfare and longevity of marine mammals in zoos and aquariums, driven by advances in management practices and collaborative efforts within the professional zoo and aquarium community. The results contribute to ongoing discussions about the well-being of animals in these institutions and encourage others to invest in improving their animal management practices.

Me voilà chargé.

'…Weekly Commentary: Barbenheimer has burst into the Oscar race with Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” and Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” finally landing in theaters with critical acclaim and a possible colossal box office haul.
Of all the movies screened up to this point this year, Nolan’s movie is one of two films that could have all the key ingredients to win the Academy Awards’ most coveted prize. It’ll be a colossal guild player (watch out for the SAG ensemble), and the regional critics could make it a darling during the precursor season. The ongoing strikes could have a ripple effect on films that are dropping in the later months since their teams won’t be able to promote them in the same way as earlier titles…
The submission deadline for general categories is Nov. 18, 2023. Preliminary shortlist voting will begin on Dec. 18, with the results announced on Dec. 21. The voting period will run from Jan. 11-16, 2024, with the official nominations announcement on Jan. 23.

Arrived to Madrid today!
I am writing this from our Airbnb in Madrid. I *think* we are in the Conde Duque neighborhood. It was very, very quiet in this neighborhood at about 4 p.m. when we arrived. I suppose maybe this was "siesta time" but I also thought it could just be Sunday. I was proven wrong on the Sunday theory because we walked to see the Nacional Ballet de España at the Teatro de la Zarzuela, and to get there we walked down the Gran Via, and that was a very, very busy street with lots of shops, theaters, and hotels. And when we were done at the ballet around 8:45 p.m. and went back up the Gran Via, there were still loads of people out, shopping at the shops, which were all pretty much still open!
I am a very nervous flier, so the overnight flight always gets me worked up. This flight, on Iberia, went quite smoothly. About our flight out of Albuquerque to Dallas, I cannot say the same. There was pretty hardcore turbulence over the Sandias and then when we landed in Dallas, the plane thunked down so hard it felt like we landed on wooden wheels. But, the Iberia flight was just fine. The layout was 2-5-2, so Cece and I had two together and Rowan was right behind me at the window--with no one next to him! He had his own bed for 9.5 hours. Eric--lucky duck, but I am the one who made it this way-- flew over the water in Business class because he get s horrifically grumpy if he can't sleep on the plane and with his height, the space in Business works well. And with miles, it's possible. I am such a nervous wreck on flights anyway that me flying in Business is a waste on a flight where one should be sleeping. I simply cannot. Though, I've got to say, I shut my eyes for like 4 hours or so on the flight last night and may have actually caught a wink or two! I was very excited to be able to use FB Messenger to chat with Michelle and Amy Coor as I was whiling away the sleepless hours. Then, I watched some of a cycling movie about the EF team and the 2020 Tour de France called Enter the Slipstream, I think, and then I did my almost-sleeping routine. It was also hard to sleep with Cece on my lap. But, she and Rowan both slept.
Once we arrived in Madrid, the kids got to go up and meet the captain and then, we made our way out of the Madrid airport (which is huge; we joked that we were walking back to Albuquerque) and got our Uber. Our Airbnb host was not there right when we arrived but his friend came soon after and helped us get in and settled. But, she didn't quite know which unit it was or which key, so perhaps she could've been better prepped. Anyway, we came up, dropped our bags, walked to the Carrefour and got some groceries, and then ate a bit quickly, and then walked down to the Teatro de la Zarzuela!
I was very excited to see this performance, the "American"-focused repertory show, with works by Balanchine, Peck, Martins, and Tharp. Lauren Lovette I guess performed previous dates this week, but she did not dance in Sinatra Suite, which I expected her to! The woman who did, though, was elegant and lovely. The Justin Peck piece was so cool and energetic and clever. The kids enjoyed the performance, though I think we were all a bit tired for it ;) Eric went on a five-mile run while we watched ballet--and then a 3-mile walk! What a guy! We Ubered back to the Airbnb, because we were too tired and hungry to walk, and I fed the kids eggs and toast -- and then off to bed they went. I am going to do the same in a sec! We shall see what time we all awaken tomorrow. But at 2:45, we are going to see the Royal Palace. We will also go to a playground and the Prado, but not sure how much will happen tomorrow. It is also supposed to be about 104 degrees. Nice.

I absolutely adore how soft Amie and Elias are for each other. That whole scene in Amie's bedroom was just so adorable and vulnerable. Amie completely forgetting being upset when he fell and admitting how much she missed him was just so tender and sweet. I feel like we normally see her have a tougher exterior when her walls are up but it was just so nice to see this side for her. I feel like we already knew he was soft for her but Idk why I was so suprised to see how soft she was for him. She always played it so cool with that it was just so sweet to see her let those walls down.
