#Repost @obeygiant ・・・ If you've been following updates this week, you know that I'm in #Sacramento for @WideOpenWalls. The crew and I just completed my 15-story #JohnnyCash at #FolsomPrison mural, which is my largest in the state of #California and my most technically ambitious mural ever. The art is based on a photo by @JimMarshallPhoto which I used originally as part of my #AmericanCivics series. I’m grateful to be able to create this image on such a large scale as a tribute for the 50th anniversary of Cash’s Live at Folsom Prison album, and I hope that this art will ignite a conversation around the need for incarceration reform. According to a recent in-depth study by the Prison Policy Initiative, America has the highest incarceration rate in the world with a shocking 2.3 million people currently imprisoned. On top of that, our prisons are disproportionately filled with poor people of color, in fact, African Americans are 13% of the U.S. population, yet 40% of the prison population in this country. More African American men are under correctional control today than there were slaves in the 1850s according to a Huffington Post piece by writer and civil rights advocate Michelle Alexander. A portion of proceeds from the Johnny Cash print I made, currently available through @ToyRoomGallery, will benefit @Cut50. Thank you to @WideOpenWalls, @BrandArts, and my crew of assistants, Dan Flores, Nic Bowers, Rob Zagula, and Luka Densmore for the 11-hour days we worked this week in the intense heat to get this mural finished! 📷 by Jon Furlong

The best thing I can do as a mother is give Hippo the tools to soar. He told me he wanted to really understand the constitution and history better. A 15-story portrait of Johnny Cash by Shepard Fairey in downtown Sacramento. Painted for 2018’s edition of Wide Open Walls, curated by Branded Arts. The image was a collaboration with the estate of Jim Marshall for Fairey's American Civics project, on the 50th anniversary of Cash’s famous Folsom Prison performance. The portrait looks in the direction towards Folsom Prison and is intended both as a tribute to The Man In Black and as a commentary on incarceration reform, a cause he was passionate about.

Okay, so most of my posts have been geared towards literacy instruction. But etymology isn’t just for teachers. It’s for writers too! I recently participated in a writer’s workshop and led the group in a writing exercise with a modified version of this prompt from Poets & Writers- “look up the etymology of one of your favorite words and consider its complex and surprising history. In a page or so, try to weave your personal past with a word while incorporating elements of its etymological development.” Y’all, the group did not disappoint. We talked about the nostalgia our ancestors faced during the Great Migration (TY @homegrown_edu), the original meaning sinister and hateration of left-handed people (come through @americancivics) and the connotative meanings of bitch (by yours truly). That little exercise helped me expand my thinking about who could benefit from EtymologyRules: Back to Basics. So to all my writer friends, check out EtymologyRules: Back to Basics. I’m excited to see what creative concepts develop on your journey to becoming word connoisseurs!
