The Life of Rebecca Barnes

Sorry if the dates are wrong, I tried my best to do the math.

The Howling Commandos had finally tracked down the only living family of James Barnes. James never talked about his personal life before the war to any of the Commandos and he really only talked to Steve. And since the Barnes' family is very closed off, it was hard to find James's family to offer condolences. He had died a while ago in the Swiss Alps, the army was going to send a letter but the Commandos thought it would be better to say it in person.When they came to the small apartment in NYC and knocked on the door they were not expecting a young girl with three other kids clinging onto her. The girl had frizzy, curly, hip-length dark brown hair. The Commandos knew this was the right house because the girl had the same smile as James.

"Hello, what can I do for you?" she asked. Dum Dum spoke next, "Is it okay if we come inside we worked with James." The girl nodded and ushered them inside. "Rikki, who are these people," asked a little girl with dirty blonde hair and green eyes. "Well, Lizzy these are some of Jamie's friends." Rikki picked up Lizzy and put her on her hip. "Is Stevie coming?" The Commandos felt guilty at the question Lizzy asked, Steve died the day previous."Anyway, what brings you to my apartment?" asked Rikki. "Well we are looking for a Rebecca is she home?" said Gabe Jones. "Oh, that's me, Rikki's a nickname my stupid brother gave me when we were kids." The Commandos now felt even more saddened by the news they were about to give the Barnes family. "Could we talk in private," one of the Commandos asked Rebecca.

Rikki led them into a separate room so that they could talk privately. "So why are you at my house?" asked Rikki. The Commandos knew that they should rip the bandaid off but it's still difficult to take off the bandaid. "Rikki that's a funny nickname," said Jim trying to start a conversation. "Yeah, I would always try to annoy my brother by calling him Jamie because he didn't like to be called, and I quote, "A name meant for a girl" so I always called him Jamie. He then started to call me Rikki since it sounds like a boy's name. And it just kind of stuck.""Ms. Barnes we have some unfortunate news to tell you," said Jack. Rebecca stiffened, "Is Jamie okay?" All of the Commandos looked down and Rebecca gasped. "He died in action, we were ambushing a train in the swiss alps and your brother fell off the side. He died fighting, I'm sorry for your loss," said Gabe. "Why isn't Steve here telling me this then?" questioned Rebecca. "Steve died crashing a plane into the ice in order to save millions," explained Dum Dum. They tried to say nice things to her like, "It's okay." "They died for a greater cause" but with every word Rebecca got angrier. Rebecca stood up and wiped off her tears, " No it's not okay my brothers died! For you people, and then you start saying meaningless words to me about it. Get out, get out of my house goddamn it!" The Commandos left silently not wanting to upset Rebecca further.

Rebecca went to her siblings, "I have some bad news, Stevie and Jamie died in the war." Lizzy and Martha went quiet and Linda, who was only a baby, started to cry. Rebecca wanted to cry too, but she had to stay strong like Jamie always did.Once the kids went to bed Rebecca dropped on the floor and started crying. "We can't even bury a body," she said over and over again. Jamie was always so full of life it's hard to imagine him dead. Deep down inside Rebecca believed that he was not dead, they had always had a twin-like bond, even though there was a 3 year age difference, meaning that they always knew what the other thought and the other well-being. Rebecca Barnes hated the people responsible for her brother's death and Rebecca needed to bring them to justice.

One Year Later

Rebecca wanted to do something worthwhile and she thought joining the S.S.R. was the only way to do so. Rebecca had good grades and experience with things the S.S.R did. She had taken criminology and forensic science in school and had just finished her combat training.When she was in the office and the man put down her file her looked up at her and said, "Why should we hire you?" he asks. Rebecca thinks about it and says, " I want to make the world a safer place and-" The man cuts her off, "No, no, no, I mean why would we hire you a woman. We already have Margret." Rebecca stands up and slaps her hands on the table, "Listen here you short sexist piece of sh*t, if a man came in here with the file I have I know for a fact you would hire him. Also, it is my human right to be able to work if I want to, I'm leaving so give me a letter when you make up your mind."

As she stormed out she was cut off by Margret Carter, "I agree with what you said about the chief being a short sexist," she didn't finish her sentence being a proper lady. Rebecca however was not, "Piece of sh*t." Peggy nodded. "I know a great Diner around here would you like to go once my shift is over?" Rebecca didn't have many friends this would be good for her. "Sure I would love to."

When they went to the diner Peggy led them to a booth and she sat down. "So what's your name?" asked Peggy. Rebecca hadn't even realized that they didn't know each other's names. "Rebecca Barnes," she said simply. Peggy froze at the surname remembering someone who was lost in the war. "Peggy Carter," Peggy said thinking that Barnes was a very popular surname it could be a whole other family.

"Do you have any siblings?" Peggy asked. "I have three younger sisters, Elizabeth, Lidia, and Margret. And I ha- had one brother, James," answered Rebecca. Peggy was now sure that this is the sister of James Buchanan Barnes. "What about you do you have any siblings?" asked Rebecca in return. "Yes I also had an older brother," replied Peggy. "I'm sorry for your loss," replied Rebecca. "It's okay, it was a long time ago." Rebecca was very easy to talk to, and she wasn't like the people Peggy was usually drawn to. She was far from a proper lady, she sat like someone who was not taught proper edict, and she was wearing pants. Not pants made for women but pants that probably belonged to a man at some point. "Your pants where did you get them?" Peggy asked. "They're hand-me-downs, from my brother. Money was never tight at my house but it just made me feel more normal, you know wearing hand-me-downs like most other younger siblings. Anyway enough about me, what's your deal?"

"I have worked in the SSR for a long time and I didn't get many jobs or respect until the war when I helped with Project Rebirth. After the war, well I turned into the secretary. I want to show people that I can do just as much as a man can and that I didn't just become an Agent because there weren't enough men to do the job. Why are you here?" Rebecca knew her answer, " You might not like it or agree with it but, I want to take down the people that hurt me and so many families. I don't want anyone else's brother to die because of a war. And the only way to do that is to rid the world of insane people who want to take over the world." Peggy nodded, "Well seeing as we will be the only women in the department I look forward o filing papers with you and hopefully putting "villains" in jail." Rebecca smiled and took a sip of her water, this felt like a good thing.

2 years later

It was Rebecca's first mission, there was no one left to do it. She had to take down some drug dealers. When she got to the location something was wrong the drug dealers were there all right but there were other people there. They had the HYDRA symbol on their jackets. Oh, how stupid had we been to think that if we killed the leader that they would die she thought. She had to move closer to get a better look.

She went up in the vents in order to hear and see everything clearly. Unfortunately, the vents were not very strong and she fell from them. The drug dealers left and the HYDRA soldiers pinned her to the ground. "Let's see who you are," the soldier said as he reached for the dog tags she wore. "These say, James Barnes, you can't be him. You must be his sister but which one? Are you Martha, Lidia, or maybe Elizabeth? Wait you are in your twenty's oh yes you must be Rebecca. Your brother's favorite."

"What are you going to do to me now that I know you still exist?" she asked. "Nothing, we know that you will be too scared to tell. Now run along and don't come back. She ran back not wanting to die. But she will tell people about Hydra.

Once she was out of earshot the soldier said, "Send the Winter Soldier after her. We can't have her knowing about us, or him."

---------------------------------------------------------------------Rebecca was on a date with her boyfriend of one year, William Proctor. They had stayed at Rebecca's house since they were an interracial couple so no one would serve them at restaurants. "So how was work today?" asked William. "It was good," lied Rebecca. She still hadn't told him about her real job he thought she was working at a DMV. "You're lying, you always take a sip of your wine and look left when you lie," said William. If he wasn't catching her lie Rebecca would have thought that it was very sweet that he notices the small things about her. "It wasn't the best but, I did get to try something different. William, I don't work at the DMV, I'm working at the S.S-" at that moment a metal hand went through the wall.

It was a man dressed in what seemed to be kevlar, he had a district metal arm, and was wearing a mask. Or a muzzle, part of Rebecca thought. "Is this someone from work?" asked William sarcastically. "Yeah, I was trying to track down some drug dealers, ran into HYDRA. I guess they sent their puppet after me," she replied. The man didn't like her comment very much because he started to attack her. Rebecca blocked most of his punches until his knife cut into her right shoulder, he then pulled it down to her wrist causing a massive cut along her arm. "Rebecca are you okay?" asked William from where he was standing in the kitchen. "Yeah just throw me a wrench or a knife!" yelled Rebecca. She had an idea, it might not be great and was based on a very flimsy theory but she wanted to try nonetheless. Once, William passed her a long kitchen knife she tried to shove it into one of the slots on the metal arm. She was successful she then twisted them with great struggle though since the man was trying to kill her. William came from behind and put two more objects in the man's metal arm. By this time Rebecca had already done quite a bit of damage. Knowing that he would lose the man left. Rebecca then collapsed in William's arms.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------"So how did you really cut the entirety of your right arm?" asked Peggy. "What do you mean? I was in a car crash and I cut myself on the window," answered Rebecca. "That's absolute rubbish, you're a great driver. Also, you're a terrible liar," Peggy told her. Rebecca sighed, "A man broke into my house, probably working for the people I "met" a few days back, he cut my arm." Peggy nodded, "What did he look like maybe I know about him." Rebecca thought back to the most distinct thing about him, "He a metal arm for his left arm." Peggy's eyes widened, "People have been talking about him, civilians I mean, a man with a metal left arm comes up at least once with every political murder after the war. People started to call him the Winter Soldier, the S. S. R. has been looking into him for a while now, but nothing comes up, he's like a ghost." Rebecca smirked, "Well then it must be a miracle that I'm still alive."

2 years later

This was Rebecca's first mission since she found out she was pregnant. She and William had decided that William would stop working, he didn't like his job much anyway. Rebecca almost got fired because the S. S. R. didn't want to pay for her maternity leave. She told her boss that she wouldn't take the leave, her husband (they aren't technically married but they have known each other for three years) would be home taking care of the child. She still went on missions since she only had a small baby bump. Nothing dangerous though, just a stakeout with Peggy and Howard. She told them about HYDRA well, she told Peggy and Howard overheard. She and Howard didn't get along, he was egotistical and cocky, two traits Rebecca hated. Howard had an equal despise for her, she was too reckless, something that wasn't always a good thing.

HYDRA was loading a truck nothing too interesting until the Winter Soldier came out to help them. He doesn't have his mask on but he was far away so no point in trying to figure out who he is, thought Rebecca. "Hey he kind of looks like Barnes," pointed out Howard. "I'm right here Stark, " growled Rebecca. "No, I mean your brother," explained Howard. Peggy leaned forward and squinted her eyes, "I mean from a distance." Rebecca laughed, "Why would Jamie be working for HYDRA? Also, my brother is incredibly vain, there is no way he'd let his hair get like that!" Peggy nodded then looked at Howard, "She has a point." Howard thought for a minute, "Maybe they put his brain in a blender?" Rebecca looked sick, "Please stop." Howard did, there were only a few things Howard was afraid of, and one of them was an angry Barnes.

3 years later

Rebecca had just had her second child, Myla, and she was already worrying. Her son, James, was a tiny terror she hoped that he didn't rub off on Myla. James had skin a little darker than Rebecca's, he had Williams nose and eyes, everything else about his completion looked closer to Rebecca. Kyla had very dark skin, she also had curly brown hair like her mother, she had her grandfather's eyes, and had Rebecca's jawline. Rebecca felt bad that none of them would ever meet their Aunts and Uncles since both Rebecca and William's family did not agree with the pairing. Rebecca felt especially bad that the one Uncle who would love to meet the kids couldn't be there. She and William had bought a small three bedrooms one bathroom house, because of the new family edition. All in all, Rebecca couldn't wait for the adventures to come with her family.

12 Years Later

Peggy had brought Rebecca to a diner to talk. "I and Stark have started something, called S.H.I.E.L.D. it's basically the S. S. R. but private would you like to join us. Rebecca nodded furiously, "Of course, I've been meaning to get out of the S. S. R. and I'm sure anything you're founding has to be worth it." Peggy laughed, "So what do you say we go and hand in our letters of resignation." Rebecca got up from the table excited to have a new beginning.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------"Seriously though Stark, why haven't you found someone yet. You're almost 43, times running out," said Peggy. "Look not all of us want to get married and have kids super young like Ms. I'm Fine over there," retorted Howard. "What do you mean young? I was 29 when I had James, and 32 when I had Mayla," said Rebecca. "The point still stands and I'm in a relationship now and it's going great," states Howard. "What's her name?" asked Peggy. "Maria, speak of the devil, I have a date with her. Nice talking to you ladies." Rebecca scoffed, "Let's hope this one isn't insane."

5 Years Later

"Top of the class aye?" asked Rebecca. Mayla blushed, "Yeah which means that I can choose any job I desire." Rebecca smiled, "What do you want to do then?" Mayla looked down, "Well I already applied for a job at S.H.I.E.L.D. and they hired me so I guess that." Rebecca was a little confused as to why her daughter would go behind her back on this one. "I just didn't want people thinking I got the job because of Aunt Peggy. I'll be working in the science division so I don't want people thinking I'm just dumb and spoiled." Rebecca laughed, "No one will think that you graduated top of your class from college when you're 19."

That same year Anthony Stark was born, Howard was nervous. He was worried that Tony would turn out like him, Peggy worried the same thing. Rebecca tried to tell Howard that Maria was a good lady, she probably toned down the Stark genes in that kid.

21 Years Later

William had come to pick Rebecca up from work. That was when something strange happened William noticed something Peggy didn't. "Hey why have these guys neer finished their mission?" asked William. Howard went to get their files, "Maybe they forgot to check in?" Rebecca shook her head, "But all of them admit to not completing the mission. And they have outrageous reasons as to why. Who believed these guys?" Peggy went to the back of the file room and took out a few more, "They were all signed by these men, we don't have any records on them until the year 1965." William spoke up, "Maybe they are in on something together, like a rival agency type deal." Howard scoffed, "There is no way SHIELD could be infiltrated." Rebecca hit him upide the head, "Your arogence will be the end of you, Stark." Peggy shruged, "We'll look into it in the morning. Howard your son is home you should be spending time with him. Rebecca if I am not mistaken you have your grandchildren Kimberly and Scott waiting for you to teach them how to properly use a gun." They all left but none of them knew that this was the last time Howard, Peggy, and Rebecca would be in the same room together.

They were all invited to the funeral, even if Rebecca wasn't that close to Howard. Peggy and Rebecca sat next to Tony the whole time knowing that he needed someone to be there with him. Peggy and Rebecca were like his Aunts, they were usually at the Stark estate. Rebecca and Howard would be bickering most of the time but Rebecca was still present at the house often when Tony was a child. Everyone was telling Tony about how his father was a great man and how they were sorry that he lost his dad. However Peggy and Rebecca tod him that Howard wasn't perfect and that they were sorry he had to lose his parents but they never tried to tell him what to feel or how to think about it.

18 Years Later

Rebecca had grown old and now had great-grandchildren, but she still worked at SHIELD. She didn't work in the field anymore though, she was a therapist of sorts. One day they sat her down with a young lady with bright red hair and told Rebecca to make the girl safe to be around. They were then left alone to talk and to help this girl through whatever was going on with her."My name is Rebecca Barnes Proctor, and you are?""Natasha Romanoff.""What would you like me to call you?""...Natasha.""Well then Natasha let's get started. Why are you here?""I worked for the KGB a kind man named Clint Barton dragged me here and they told me to sit through this until I was stable enough to go into the field.""I used to be a SHIELD Agent you know, I was here when this place was first built. Now I work here, helping people like you.""...Who is that a picture of on your desk?""That was my brother, he died in the war.""I'm sorry.""It's okay he's been gone for a long time. Anyway why would people think you aren't stable?""I was a Russian Spy, they just want to make sure I'm on their side.""Do you promise not to betray us?""I wouldn't dream of it. I can't go to a prison cell, again.""Great then I will tell themyou are stable as long as you come help me watch over my great grandchildren every Thursday.""I will Mrs. Proctor.""Oh please, call me Rebecca.""Thanks Rebecca."

1 Year Later

"You seem quiet today Natasha is something wrong?""It's nothing I just got out of the Hospital that's all.""What were you there for?""A man with a metal arm shot someone through me.""So I see you've met the Winter Soldier.""The Winter who?"The Winter Soldier, he's an assassin.""Why haven't I heard of him?""He's like a ghost no one can track him and every file we have of himis erased gone. You see this scar he gave me it."Natasha looked at the scar, "Looks like it hurt." Rebecca sighed, "It did for a long time, but what's done is done. Be careful Natasha." Natasha smiled, "I always am."8 Years Later"Rebecca!" called Natasha, "I brought some company for you!" Rebecca smiled, "I'm in the kitchen." She was trying to complete the crossword when she saw Natasha. "Hello, dear I'mso glad you found time to visit me." Natasha looked at the other visitors, "Guys this is Rebecca, she's a few years younger than Steve. And Rebecca this is Sam-" Rebecca inturpterd her, "Stevie! Why haven't you visited me since you came back from the ice?" Steve looked dumbstruck, "I thought you would be dead or you wouldn't remember me." Rebecca wacked him upside the head, "That was easier to do when you where shorter but this will have to do. How dare you think me dead! And I'm not that old, this brain's still ticking!"

Bucky was behind the wall he didn't really know who this lady was and he wasn't sure she would be happy to have a murderer in her house. He noticed something on her left arm then, a scar going down it. Bucky remembered that, he did it to the young women who was trying to have dinner with her boyfriend, then he tried to kill her. Bucky stepped out of the shadows to say he was sorry for hurting her all those years ago when the women hugged him. She started saying, "Jamie, I knew you were alive! Everyone said that you were dead but I knew deep down that you were alive!" Natasha smiled, that was the first time Bucky had ever seen her smile. "As I was about to say, this is Rebecca Barnes Proctor," said Natasha. When the name was said Bucky started to remember her, he would call her Rikki. Bucky hugged her back, "Long time no see Rikki." Rebecca looked at Bucky's arm, "I know what you did and I forgive you."

1 Year Later

Rebecca died peacefully in her sleep a few months after seeing Bucky again. Evryone said that since she saw him her heart had been ready to go, knowing that he was alive. Others said that she missed her friends and loved ones. Whichever you choose to belive just remember that Rebecca Barnes lived an amazing life.

.....well today didn’t exactly go as planned because my body decided it was a convenient time to crap out on me again, except it was not at all a convenient time. sigh. I slept until my 12:30 alarm went off, got ready and went over to the DMV. Had a little trouble finding it, since I’d only been there once before and I was like, 16 at the time, but thanks to some kind strangers I got it figured out. big line already out the door, I wait on it for a while, then get one of their machines to give me a number based on the reservation I had. then apparently it was announced that their computer system was down (because of course it is) so we had to wait for a while, then I got called, only to be given a form and told to get back on the line I was originally on. lovely. so I get back on line, and as I’m reaching the counter I get pulled out to be on another line for the people who are trying to get their “enhanced” drivers license (I still have no idea what the fuck that means but I’m gonna need it for ID to travel), where there were three other people, and we waited...and waited....the other people were nice, we talked and joked for a bit, then at some point my stomach decided it wanted go all kamikaze on me, which to my body’s credit hasn’t happened since my sister’s sweet 16 back in October (although that was also increidbly bad timing) but here we are again, and I’m on a line. I tried to power through, but everything was going sooooooo slow and when they finally started calling people from our line there were still three people ahead of me, and now I’m feeling really sick, I’m sweating like crazy and just feeling really really awful, at which point I knew I needed to get out of here and find a bathroom. so I called over the lady who works there that was managing the line and told her I was gonna be sick if I didn’t go to the bathroom right now (I said otherwise I would wind throw up all over the floor, which wasn’t quite true but I thought it’d be more effective) but of course didn’t want to lose my spot, so she took my ticket and said she’d hold onto it for me. So I run out and find the bathroom along with the water fountain, because I was also dying of thirst, I guess from the sweating. But yeah, I stayed in there a whilem and there was somewhat of a lull in my stomach pains, and at this point it’s like 3:50 and the DMV closees at 4, and I was in no condition to go back there, so while I wasn’t in a massive amount of pain I ran to my car and tried to drive home as fast as I could, because I knew they’d start back up on the ride, and I was right, so I got there as fast as I could and ran into the bathroom, where I got to work through the rest of it I guess (I would say sorry for the TMI but this is my blog and I’m gonna post whatever the hell I want), which led me to feel mostly okay afterwards, definitley a stark improvement, but still kind of lethargic and just tired, so I curled up on the couch with my heating pad and just didn’t move for a while. I wish I knew what was causing these random episodes. I suppose I could bring it up to the gastro doctor I’m seeing next week, but I kind of doubt it’s related to the chest pain I’m supposed to be going to that doctor about, which is much more of a recent development. These episodes used to happen much more often, like once a week back in 2015 but I’m fairly sure that was because I wasn’t really eating, which would make sense I suppose. There was a bad string of days last fall, but then I was good up to this past October. it’s just really the worst. but anyway. I hung out and did nothing for a while, which was nice, and eventually had dinner, where I ate some leftover ham from the other day which was very good. Did some more hanging out and most importantly not moving, up until about 9 o clock, when I knew the premiere of the new show 9-1-1 was happening, because my brother texted me about it yesterday saying I should watch it. I was a huge Third Watch junkie back in the day, and there’s a lot of similarities in the concepts. The episode was a pretty decent pilot, there were parts I didn’t think worked very well, but I definitely got very emotional with (spoilers) the baby case and then the little girl, but I absolutely loved the way they ended that scenario with firefighter kid blasting the thief on the firehose, like that was SUCH a good moment they played so well, and that really makes me want to stick with the show, even though I won’t be able to watch it live after this week (sigh, night classes). Watched the news for a while, then my dad wanted to watch some flash, so we picked up halfway through the council of Wells/Black Bison episode, where Ralph continued to get on my nerves, and then the pre-crossover episode where Barry is being a fucking moron and like stalking DeVoe and I literally wanted to reach through the screen and strangle him, lol. He wanted to keep watching but I wanted to go to bed as it was like 11:45 and I was sleepy, but I set him up to watch the episode after the crossover since he’d already seen the crossover, then headed upstairs and started getting ready for bed. We’re supposed to get the worst of the crazy snow storm that’s supposed to be coming tonight, and theyre saying things like “blizzard warning” and “polar vortex” so I’ll likely be staying inside the house tomorrow, hopefully I can make it back to the DMV on Friday before I have to leave. Okay, that’s it for now, I’m sleepy and ready for bed. Goodnight babes. Stay wonderful.

Ok we've got a small problem. At present we get a car from motability, but we want to switch to owning our own car, but we have a major problem with this new all cars must be insured at all times or declared SORN scheme. The problem we have is that our motability car goes back in October. We're in a rural location so we need a car ready for when the switch over happens. At present with the motability insurance their insurance only insures one vehicle, the motability one, and can't have additional vehicles added to it. We've got a few quotes from insurance companies who have told us that when the motability lease expires they will give us the no claim discount based on the motabiity insurance, but they wont give us that discount until the motability car goes back. So what we want to do is get the new car before October, put it on the drive, check everything is ok with it, and then insure it when we start using it on the road when the motability vehicle goes back. Only problem is with this new law we can't do that without declaring the vehicle SORN. Some of the vehicles we've seen come with a few months road tax, so we don't really want to lose that by declaring it SORN, just for a few weeks (or is the tax disc still valid when you remove the SORN on the car?), we also don't want to insure the vehicle before the motability vehicle goes back as we wont get any NCB from the new insurer and that will cost us about an extra 500 in insurance (our current insurance price is about 500-600 but with 0 years no claims it goes up to around 1,000-1,100 - we have 3 years no claims with motability and I've held my driving licence for 6 years). I've read that you don't need this compulsory insurance if the vehicle is in trade, or between registered owners. That is one option, but how long after you buy a vehicle can you keep it in that status, would we be able to keep it like that for a few weeks or is it pretty much instant when we get the car. Obviously I realise I would need some kind of temporary one day insurance to drive the vehicle home after purchase.""

HELP! Insurance company trying to low ball estimate?

Back in April I was driving and a lady tried switching lanes and struck my vehicle. I immediately went to an auto body shop and got an estimate for the damage, they took photos and everything. 17 UK Good insurance car... Please Help...?

Hello, I am 17 and live in the UK. I am learning to drive and hope to pass my test soon. I am looking to get a car when I pass my test. I do like larger cars like SUV's and pickups and compact crossovers but that is not to say that I do not like smaller cars. AT THE DMV

How does that Simon & Garfunkel song go? “Someone told me it’s all happening at the DMV”? No, that isn’t right. I’d been procrastinating and procrastinating and procrastinating. And procrastinating and procrastinating. In short -- procrastinating. About getting a new license. You see, my last one was from California and I loved it. It was a point of pride, or an object of pride, for me. I had a nice tan in it and a new haircut and I looked awake. I remember I stood behind a sweet old elderly Asian couple when I got it. It had a little graphic of the Golden Gate Bridge on it. It made me feel cool, like I lived in California, because I did. As if everything was perfect then! (It was not.) But you know how you look back on your younger self with such sympathy and almost wonder? When you’re not beating yourself up about things you may have done? I do think I’m always getting better, and I am the same person, but still it’s sad. Like a kind of goodbye to that part of your life. Or maybe I’m just saying all this because I thought I looked good in the picture, and usually I.D. photos can be a bit dicey. My friend told me he had just used the same picture, kept his old one, twice, so then I didn’t feel so bad about going. I could still maybe keep tanned photo me. You won’t believe what happened though, or you will, you probably will. The woman just took my picture, before I even realized what was happening, she took it, I had hat head, it wasn’t pretty. And then I didn’t even get to keep my old license, it was probably whisked away into a trashcan, this huge part of my history, the tanned photo of me. I didn’t ask for it back because I don’t like to make any kind of scene. In fact I talk really softly and most people can’t understand me, in these situations. The new photo was printed out in gray on my temporary license and I had hat head and looked slightly confused and it wasn’t a keeper but I had to keep it. Back in Massachusetts with hat head. The DMV was great though. It was in a very sketchy part of town and was kind of one of those scenes out in public where people just seem really pathetic and it’s depressing. Like being at the DMV. Except it was great! I had tried to go two weeks ago but forgot my proof of current address, and I wasn’t ready to let my California license go yet. (I still have my college I.D. in my wallet, which I again look really confused in but I love it.) On that trip I knew I was under a bad star that day when I got stuck behind a pickup truck that had a Trump sticker and a giant sticker of a machine gun and the words COME AND TAKE IT. One of those mornings when you wake up and you’re like, nope, shit just isn’t working out today. Today was the day. Today today was the day. Exceptional people watching. Across the board. Multicultural. Not wealthy. Some older guy in a veteran’s hat started talking to me about random stuff and I was trying to be nice but I was like, why are you talking to me? In groups of people I try not to talk. I try to make as soft an impact as possible. Then when I was filling out my info on a clipboard, a young Latino couple next to me was looking at another Latino girl in front of us -- to be specific, her backside in spandex. I mean it was very noticeable and, all right, yes, something to marvel at. They were debating about whether it was real, the girlfriend said it wasn’t but I think she was just jealous. This particular DMV didn’t seem like a place that a lot of people who had work done went to. Just outside when I was walking in, two guys walked by and I heard one say to the other, “It went all the way through his head.” Zero chance that girl’s ass was fake. Hundred percent probability the girlfriend was jealous. She said something about the waist-to-ass ratio not adding up. Pure jealousy. As I was waiting for my ticket to be called -- about an hour -- a mother and her son talked in thick accents about a fight the son had had with his girlfriend. What about? the mother asked. Nothing. What was the nothing fight about? the mother asked. They complained about someone else they knew never being able to do their taxes. There was ANOTHER Latino girl in the waiting area and she was really pretty and really well put-together and she was sitting with an older woman who must have been her mother, even though this girl must have been about thirty, and the mother talked to her the whole time in hushed tones, sitting facing the daughter while the daughter looked ahead. I caught the daughter checking me out, no word of a lie. You know when you catch someone looking at you really seriously and, like, processing your face? And they don’t even look away immediately when you look at them because they’re still processing? Our numbers were called at the same time too and we were at the desk talking to the ladies at the same time. She had nice boots and spoke both Spanish and English without an accent. She had crisp jeans that fit her very well and a nice purse and I think even a scarf, and a purplish shirt and nice long hair. Ayyye, mamiii. I tried not to full-on scrutinize her appearance and I didn’t see her from all angles so it was a hung verdict. I’m so rarely attracted to people that it’s nice just to get even a little tingle, a little thinking in that direction. How easily could I have won over the mother, I mean come on? The other lady who was helping her checked me out too, just that blatant I’m-looking-at-you for a second, like what’s your deal, what’s your socioeconomic status? (The woman who helped me didn’t check me out and was all business.) We’ll skip over the part when I suddenly had to go to the bathroom when I was waiting and walked over to Subway to use their bathroom -- also very nice employees. The whole thing kind of renewed my faith in people, their drug addictions and shady stories notwithstanding, or maybe even more so because of. I had gotten a card from my mother in the morning and on the front of it it said, “You can’t start the next chapter of your life if you keep re-reading the last one.” But no, I didn’t want to lose my California license, and I don’t want to forget anything. All these things that happened are always with me, they made me ME, like I’m riding at the front of a wave of the whole past. How could I leave it behind? You’d have to lobotomize me, Cuckoo’s Nest-style, and then I would just be a vegetable. At any rate I got my new license, had been treated to attractive Latino ladies’ ladinesses, and in a really sketchy part of town on my way home I stopped and took a picture of a neon grim reaper in a random storefront. Maybe for my next license I will have to move somewhere else.

okay well it’s late because I once again forgot to take my meds and didn’t get tired when I should but I took them now so that’s all we can do for now. today was alright, it was a lot with going to the courthouse and all. it’s just very odd from going from seeing like 1ish people a day (besides like walking by people if I do happen to go out) to being in a big building that’s supposed to be social distancing but is still absolutely flooded with people because people have rights and if they want to file for an emergency order of protection you can’t tell them no too full and lock them out. they still had that going during lockdown, where they’d have people come there, fill out the paperwork, then webcam in from the first floor of the courthouse to the judge on the second or third level. my agency was one of the ones who was like well that’s stupid and literally pushed them into allowing remote hearings, which has mostly been my work life since April. it’s good to be getting back to “normal” court somewhat at least. but I’m off track, anyway. I woke up at 10 and despite not being terribly early or me having stayed up terribly late I really did not want to get out of bed and was tempted to come up with some sort of story so I can go back to sleep, but alas, I persevered and got up. ubered over, things in the office were very hurry up and wait, either a time crunch for a small period of time and then a longer time with nothing to do. The door to our office suite was locked which it sometimes is and the front desk lady called someone to come unlock it and then they just like, didn’t, so I was just sitting there and then I got commissioned to go track down a motion someone in our org had filed that was hitting the wall for a reason that wasn’t an actual reason. so I had to go explain oh, we’re not representing them in this case, just filing (which is the speech I repeat to them every time we’re handling a case) and then it was oh well there’s no motion here and my boss had to be like bitch “petition” is literally the proper word for motion in this case and then it was about vacating orders and I repeated like 3 times this was a petition for a re-hearing, not vacating an order, and then there was something about fees and they eventually took it being like “well that’s what I’m gonna tell the judge, and we’ll see what he thinks” like surprise bitch the judge knew what was actually going on and agreed with us, not you. sigh. it’s always a delicate dance with the clerk’s office between being polite and occasionally having to make them do their jobs when they decide they don’t want to (I handed in an EOP filing today that has the 3 pm deadline and it was like 2:55 and I was READY for a fight, it’s not 3 yet do your fucking jobs, but thankfully it was just accepted without a fight, which was a relief because I’ve been there back when we were all in the office and the deadline was 4:30, banging on their door at 4:29 (not exaggerating) and demanding they do their damn jobs. it’s exhausting). Then when I went to pick up orders everyone was saying different things and one clerk was like “well you need to leave me a note by 11 that you want an order then come back at 2 to pick it up” like bitch do I look like a fucking gopher to you? you literally just have to pick up a paper on your desk and walk 10 feet to where you have a copy machine, make a copy and give it to us. THAT’S IT. sigh. it’s the DMV government worker lack of motivation to actually do their jobs right problem. whenever I had to dig in my heels with them but still don’t want them pissed at me in the future I always try to end with like “thank so much for your patience and help, I know everything is crazy right now but I really appreciate you taking the time to help me” and that tends to make people smile enough that they won’t just roll their eyes at me when I show up at their door in the future. there is the one guy who’s my in at the clerk’s office, he’s like in his 20s and really easy going and is like “hey baby” for every girl he knows but like it’s in a sweet adorable and not at all creepy way? And I’ve gone to him multiple times like help me pls and he’s always come through for me, the only issue is he tends to be a floater so he’s not always there when I need something. ah well. the other thing I did was a call for a court date next week when we’re bringing in a witness at the judge’s request. this is the client who is like 5 years older than me and she’s just SO COOL and I just want to be her friend so badly haha so I always like speaking with her. it’s been a really tough case because the dude is at least under the impression he’s a charming psychopath and he definitely does succeed in charming some people, I’ve had a few short conversations with him and he’s been amenable in a way that could be seen as charming but with everything I know about what he’s done I’m not gonna get caught up in there. I think the last time I saw him was at a court date in March when we were figuring things out and at one point the sheriff was bitching at him to do some stupid arbitrary thing like move back one bench or something they clearly just made up, and he looked at me and I just looked at the sheriff and then back to him and rolled my eyes, because it was very much a very common feeling because that stuff happens all the time. so we shared a small laugh but that was about it. I’m put in a weird position between needing to be professional and having to deal with a lot of slimy people. when there’s a lawyer on the other side of course a level of decorum is expected, and I’ve never really had an actual issue with a lawyer outside of them like, disagreeing with a motion but like, that’s their jobs I’m not going to hold that against him. but when the other part is self-represented, dealing with these dudes (and I’m saying dudes because I’ve personally only seen it from men in my limited experience) when I know every single awful thing they’ve done to my client and trying to be open with them is....frustrating, to say the least. The dude I was talking about yesterday who the judge kicked off the zoom call for being a fucking idiot, I had to spend like a whole morning going in circles with him about trying to reach and agreement and like, I also ofc know all of the super shitty things he’s done since then, but like, the amount of loathing I have towards this man is really here, and so I want to squash him like a bug whenever I get the opportunity to do so, but lately he’s been going out and getting himself squished (usually at his own fault) before I even get to him, and I mean, that makes my life easier haha. but that case is going off the rails and it’s really just a matter of time before he’s going to do something really desperate and extreme and all we can do is track his gps monitor that goes off and alerts my client that he’s close, and hope/pray the precautions we’ve put in place are enough to stop whatever he’s going to snap and finally do. I am really so fond of this client, she has daughters around my age and has sort of adopted me as one and always checks in with me to make sure I’m taking care of myself and everything is okay, and I know if anything happened to her I would be totally devastated and be very tempted to go find him and get the shit beaten out of him (or worse, depending on what happened). But I try not to think about that. I’ve gone so off track here haha lots of creeps who think they’re charming. but we had this phone call, it’s going to be an interesting court date because when we filed the motion we knew it was a long shot and probably wouldn’t get granted as we wanted it to be, but something needed to be done in the situation and this seemed like the best way to deal with it. but basically the judge had asked us to find a witness that it’s a really specific position to talk about the potential consequences for the dude (mainly if he can get reassigned or would just get fired) and we couldn’t quite get that, but we’re being resourceful and coming up with what we can and go from there. Okay, I’ve ranted way too much about work here, I left around 3:30 or so and ubered home, rest of the night was boring but relaxing which I will accept, I was kind of doing some work on different projects that had all required attention at the same time, but I was happy with the results. and yeah, I turned on the Jimmy Kimmel show for a few but he’s still out so it was a different host who was pretty funny, but not long afterwards I decided to shower and start getting ready for bed, and you basically know the story from there up until now. and now it’s past 2 and I do have a 8:45 wake up for court (maybe get to sleep after? we’ll see) so I am going to bed now.
