I originally wrote a similar guide back in 2019 on a Swedish forum site, but ended up translating and re-writing the whole thing over the last few weeks and updating with a whole lot of new image examples.

I'm sharing the entire post under a CC BY-NC-SA license, so feel free to share around! Keep in mind that I'm not an expert, just another hobbyist artist trying to help by summarizing what I've picked up over the years about referencing in art, and to whom English is a second language so apologies for any clunky wording, I tri.
