Summary: Hela is amused by the reader and slowly but surely begins to fall for them.

A/N: This was originally going to be a short one but whoops xD I hope you guys enjoy it!

She couldn’t help but watch your small form as you pulled yourself up onto your pegasus and she gave her head a small tilt; She was amazed that you had even managed to get onto the horse at all to be honest. You seemed to be on the rather.. Small side in terms of height. Then again, most people on Asgard were just rather tall including herself so when she spotted you in the large group of Valkyries you could say her interest had peaked. Fenris just gave a small snort as he watched the rather small horses around him, a low growl escaping his throat whenever one got too close for his liking and all Hela could do was lightly pat at his side as she stood beside him and watched those around her. You could feel her piercing blue gaze on you; It had been on you all day and you were just about ready to snap at Hela to figure out why she was staring at you but you knew now wasn’t the time. You’d have to attempt it at a later time because right now you were needed for training to show that you and the others were still in top shape to help Odin and Hela with their fights. Once Odin had given you all the cue, you flew your pegasus’ into the air and away you went. Hela couldn’t help but hum lowly as she glanced at her father.

“Father.. Who was that? The one leading them? I don’t believe I’ve met her fully yet...” She had questioned, running her fingers through Fenris’ fur as he laid nearby and watched the skies quietly as Hela and Odin the same. Odin gave a small hum in return before he responded.

“Her name is (Y/N). She became a Valkyrie a little over two years ago and has since risen in the ranks. She now leads the Valkyrie into battle when we go.” Odin had informed his daughter, looking at her then back towards the sky as he watched as the training continued. Hela gave a small nod as she also returned her attention to the skies, her eyes landing on you within moments. The way your hair flew through the wind as you concentrated on your target, the way you somehow were able to keep your cool being so high off the ground and being on a winged horse no less; You were fearless, Hela had assumed, and you were determined to show just what you had to offer and you did just that. It wasn’t long before you and the other girls returned to the ground, the hooves of the pegasus’ clopping against the ground as they made their landing. Odin couldn’t help but give a warm smile as he went and applauded you all.

“That was spectacular and I couldn’t have expected anything better from you girls.” He had said, the smile still on his face as you returned the gesture, a few of the other girls doing the same as they bowed their head towards him. Hela on the other hand remained quiet and glanced at you all over before she returned her attention to you, giving a small hum as she began to play with Fenris’ fur once more; It was as though doing such a thing kept her grounded. For what reason she didn’t know herself. She had this weird feeling in her stomach and it felt as though she was going to be sick but it wasn’t a physical kind of sickness; It was as though butterflies had begun to grow in her stomach and they were fluttering about, trying to find a way out. She didn’t know why she was beginning to feel like this, it had never happened before. It was only when she looked at you and you looked at her that this feeling began to fluster and grow through her and she honestly hated it.

“Hela?” Odin spoke again which caused the female to look over and blink a few times.

“Yes Father?” She questioned the older man to which he gave a low hum and spoke up.

“I said if you had anything to add to what I had said to the girls?” He asked, eyebrow raised as Hela released a breath and gave a small nod as she began to speak up, doing her best to keep her eyes on anyone but you; She was also trying her best to keep her voice strong and strict.

“Excellent flying, girls. Amazing fighting skills as well.. I wouldn’t change a thing you all are doing. Keep up the work.” She spoke to which the girls couldn’t help but grin and relax, you yourself relaxing as you allowed your shoulders to slump as that warm smile appeared on your face. You had proven yourself not only to Odin but to Hela as well and as you two made eye contact, you couldn’t help but blush and glance away as she did the same. She needed to talk to you, to get to know you some more no matter what happened. It was going to take some time, but she was certain the two of you could become friends.

It had taken her some serious time, about five months to be exact, but you and Hela had somehow managed to grow closer in terms of a friendship. You went from not knowing barely anything about each other to knowing each other's darkest secrets about one another. Whenever you two saw each other, you both could feel the butterflies in your stomach and it just happened to grow now that you two began to talk more and more. The conversations would often go well into the night and one night you clearly remember the sun coming up during the conversation, but neither of you seemed to care so long as you two were together. It was during one of those nights that Hela began to realize she was falling in love with you and she honestly didn’t mind it; She would rather have you then some other person lusting after her and the same went for you. You would rather have Hela by your side then someone who only wanted to be with you because of your ranking, of your title. You both wanted someone who loved you both for your personalities, not the looks. Although those were addons that made the package even better.

You two were currently residing in the garden, sitting on one of the many benches within it as you listened to Hela begin to talk about a recent book she had found to help her with her magic. You had found the topic fascinating, but magic was never really your thing. You never could learn how to do it so you stuck with what you knew best; Swords. As you listened to her speak you began to play with one of the flowers on a nearby bush, eventually pulling it off and spinning the stem of the flower in between your fingers as you listened to Hela talk. Eventually she soon went quiet and watched you quietly, looking your form over quietly. You were out of your normal Valkyrie armor and were wearing a simple, sky blue dress with a pair of sandals to match, within your hair were placed various flowers that you picked and put into your hair as you listened to her talk; You looked beautiful to say the least and you couldn’t help but blink once she went quiet and turned to her, eyebrow raised.

“Is there something wrong, Hela?” You questioned her to which she blushed lightly as you had caught her staring and quickly shook her head, trying to think of a reason for why she had been staring and she would probably forever regret the words that had slipped her mouth.

“No I just um- I uh.. Why are you so short?” She had spurted it out so fast that her brain didn’t even have a moment to register it but once her words had reached her ears she had quickly covered her mouth; Out of all the things she could have come up with to say, that was what came out of her mouth? She couldn’t help but feel embarrassed and was more than ready to get up and leave you until she began to hear your laughter. She couldn’t help but blush lightly at your laughter; The noise that left you was heavenly for certain and she couldn’t get enough of it. Whenever she made you laugh she could feel those butterflies growing restless in her stomach and this just so happened to be one of those moments as she watched you.

“W-Why am I so short? Really Hela?” You teased, coming down from your laughing fit as she all but rolled her eyes and mumbled quietly.

“Listen it just came out- I didn’t mean it, my dove.. My brain just completely shut down on me.” She quickly spoke and you blushed lightly at her nickname from you. She had given you that nickname after your third meeting together. You two had snuck out into the town and while there a dove just so happened to land on your shoulder and she couldn’t help but call you that ever since. You of course didn’t mind the nickname one bit and if anything, you had encouraged her to keep using it; Although whenever the nickname did come from her lips you couldn’t help but blush.

“Well.. Why are you so tall, hm?” You shot back which caused Hela to blink and begin to laugh at your remark back at her. You couldn’t help the grin that escaped you as she continued her laughter. Her laughter was intoxicating and it wasn’t a few seconds later that you began to laugh with her. Your combined laughter spread through the garden and Odin couldn’t help but smile from where he stood as he watched you two just at the entrance of the garden. You would be a good fit for his daughter, he thought. You would bring out a new side to her; A side that he all but struggled to bring out no matter what he did and he honestly couldn’t have asked for anyone better to do it besides you. You were the leader of the Valkyrie, a strong group of women who helped him in just about every battle and you managed to even bring out a new side to each and every one of those women. If you were to ask for his daughter's hand he would gladly do so with pride and with that thought in mind he made his leave, turning away and continuing to think on the thought. Hela was the one to see him as he left the area and she couldn’t help but let out a breath and look at you as her laughter began to reside.

“I umm.. (Y/N).. I need to tell you something else.” She spoke to you, suddenly getting serious and you couldn’t help but blink at her words and frowned lightly, giving her a small nod as your own laughter vanished into the air.

“What is it?” You questioned, your head tilting to the side as Hela let out a breath and began to think her words over carefully. She wasn’t one to express such soft emotions and it kinda scared her of what you would say to this, but she needed to take this chance now. Sure she had only known you for a few short months but she was certain you were the one she needed in her life.

“I.. I’ve come to terms with this and I.. I really like you. Whenever I look at you I feel butterflies flying around in my stomach, when I hear your laughter or your voice I all but melt at it.. I turn to putty for you and I would love nothing more if I could take your hand and pronounce you my girlfriend..” She admitted, looking at you as you stared at her with wide eyes. Somehow you had managed to win Hela over and you weren’t exactly certain as to how you managed to succeed in such a thing; All you two had done was talk and go on the occasional walk plus the battles you two would end up fighting together. Those little battles always turned into victories though and the smile that would cross Hela’s face always managed to make you smile. During those months you had somehow taken her heart and made it yours and your brain just couldn’t wrap itself around that idea. Once that realization did hit you, you could feel the blush beginning to creep up on your cheeks as you went ahead and took her hands in yours, gripping them lightly before you smiled at her.

“I.. Feel the same way, Hela… I fell for you just as hard as you fell for me; I turn into putty for you just from hearing you talk, from hearing you speak such amazing things to me. I live for our outings out into the town and our conversations that last into the night.. I would love nothing more than to take your hand.” You had told her to which she stared back at you with the same wide eyes you had given her; You had fallen for her as well. It was then that Hela didn’t waste another second and crashed her lips to yours in a sweet and short kiss to which you quickly returned before she retracted herself, blushing lightly as she cleared her throat. You couldn’t help but giggle and speak up.

“Listen Hela, I may be short.. But I have a lot of love to give. So I hope you’re ready for it.” You teased her to which she gave a small chuckle and kept your hands in hers, bringing them up to her lips as she gave you a warm smile and gently kissed them. You were bringing out a new side to Hela that you could have sworn you were never going to see; It was a much softer side to her and you were eating it up and you had many plans to keep this side of her to yourself.

“Well my dove, I am ready to receive all the love you have to give.” She smiled at you before bringing you in for another kiss, one which you happily returned.

It was such a special night, such a special moment. Queen was finally out there, becoming a legend in the British musical landscape. Their newest album A Night at the Opera was already platinum only a few weeks after its release and that was the last night of the European leg of their tour. It was even more special because it was recorded by the BBC and was taking place on Christmas Eve. Nothing in the world could have prevented Y/N from attending this concert.

She had not been able to come to the concerts that Queen had been playing in England’s capital earlier that month because of work but she was here tonight. She was still living in Roger’s flat but when he had came back to London for those few dates she had prefered to stay at the hotel where she was still working. She did not want to just cross paths with him for ten minutes every morning and she still has things to figure out. Y/N was still working in the hotel even though she had finally been casted in a little production but she wanted to earn as much money as she could before the end of the tour. She was extremely grateful but she did not want to ask for more than necessary and wanted to move out before the end of March.

The gig was absolutely amazing. Y/N was overjoyed and full of pride. She could not believe they were killing it so much. They were all owning that stage and the connection with the audience was breathtaking. She felt very special being able to call all those musicians her friends. She was so happy to see them from backstage, smiling every time one of them would look in her direction. She was not alone, she was surrounded by managements, few family members and friends. But now she was between Veronica and Mary and that felt weird. Because she was not one of their girlfriends even less so a wife.

These few weeks in Roger’s flat, away from him had been enough for her to reflect on the situation and to come to terms with fact that she was madly in love with Roger Taylor. She had suspected it for quite a while but never wanted to admit it. Still, as she was surrounded by his stuff, sleeping in his clothes and missing him that much there was no way to deny it. That scared her quite a bit. Because he was first and foremost one her best friend, not many people had supported her the way he did and he knew so much about her and she was terrified by her feelings.

He was so handsome behind his drums, making it look so easy with his falsettos and his blond hair, being the only one not wearing white. The concert was close to an end and Y/N’s heart was racing like mad. She had not talked to him for so long. There had been phone calls but her voice had not betrayed her, yet. Roger calling while he was on tour was unusual, at least that often. They had this little habit to keep each other updated on their lives when they could not talk face to face but it was now once a week. She had also received flowers on the first night of her show and even though the card was signed “Queen” she knew he had been the one planning it. Although she did not want to admit it she wished all those signs meant the feelings were mutual.

She had arrived right on time and had only got the time to say hello while Roger was offstage during Brian’s solo. Thankfully he had to say hi to everybody quickly and hadn’t pay too much attention to her. She had no idea how this night was going to end but she hoped more than anything that her feelings would not interfere with their friendship and behaviour.

Y/N could hear the crowd screaming their names (and Roger’s was shouted more than once) as they bowed one last time. She could not stop herself from clapping her hands or smiling, she was so proud. Roger was completely full of adrenaline because of the show. He went straight towards Y/N and took her in his arms.

“Rog’ it’s disgusting you’re so sweaty” she said, internally enjoying this as much as she could

“That was amazing right?”

“Much more than that” she smiled

And just like that he kissed her. His naked torso against her chest. It was so brief and yet both of their body had been electrified. Roger hadn’t been able to fight against this urge in him. Before they were able to say anything, Freddie’s arm was around Roger’s shoulder as he dragged him somewhere else backstage. They were about to throw a big party, it was Christmas Eve after all and they had to celebrate this incredible night.

Roger glanced at Y/N one last time before he was too far. He was so scared to have ruin everything, he was always so impulsive. He was completely obsessed by Y/N and he had been for so long now. He needed to call her every time he could, hearing her voice and making sure she was doing fine. Roger had had to face the truth too, literally because every time he had slept with a girl during the tour he would always end up picturing Y/N’s face in front of him. So he had stop, because it wasn’t fair for them and because the only thing that could make him get off was imagining Y/N naked in his bedsheets back in London. He wanted more than her body though, because that he already had in a way, no he wanted her, entirely. Because he loved her.

There were so many people, so much alcohol and other things but all felt so alive. Everybody wanted to congratulate the band for their success and the amazing show they had pulled of so it had been impossible for Y/N and Roger to talk. They looked at each other from time to time, making sure that the other was still there, in the corner of the room.

‘So, how are you?” Mary asked Y/N, stopping her from daydreaming

Mary and Y/N knew each other quite well even though they were not extremely close. They usually spent a lot of time together one the days they both attended the band’s rehearsal or parties. They liked each other’s company because they both had the same admiration and respect for the boys. Mary had been kind enough to give Y/N’s discount on new clothes for her to go to her auditions and they had gone for a cup of tea a few weeks ago.

“I’m great thanks. The play was great and I’ve taken on a new project starting in January”

“That’s amazing ! I’m so happy things are finally going great for you. You deserve it so much”

“Thank you Mary, I really appreciate it. And you? How is it going?”

She wanted to ask her about her relationship with Freddie but she didn’t. She had always felt that deep connection between them but still, she knew that something was not right, especially lately. Nevertheless she was determined to be supportive of her friends’ choices no matter what.

“Oh, it’s alright you know. I’m still working and Freddie’s on tour so I’m pretty much alone all the time. Well I have the cats but...”

Y/N could see real sadness in Mary’s eyes. She had been engaged to Freddie for a few years now and it was already they’re third tour as Queen.

“That must be hard for you” Y/N said

“Oh you know… I guess you don’t really have the choice when you’re in love with a rockstar. And if you’re in love that doesn’t really matter” she replied

Y/N looked at Roger, in the corner of the room, joking with a guy she did not know, his ridiculous wig still on his head. Would she ever be able to do the same? In the event of anything serious happening between her and Roger, would she be able to spend months without him? Was her love for him strong enough for that kind of thing? She suddenly realised how stupid it was to think about things like this and yet there had been that kiss between them.

Mary was not stupid. She could see what was going on right under her nose. She would have never believed that Roger and Y/N could be an item when they had first met a few years ago but now it was obvious. The way they had become close could be seen as unconventional but it did not lessen the genuine relationship that had flourished from it. But Mary was also aware of how hard it was to be the partner of a member of the band…

“It makes it easier to know how happy he is when he’s doing what he loved you know. I think it’s just the beginning and that’s all he’s ever wished for” she carried on “when he calls and he tells me how much fun they’re having. When I see the crowds shouting his name. That’s amazing”

“I… Yes I guess so” was all Y/N was able to reply “Let’s have another drink shall we?”

She was already quite tipsy but her brain was about to explode and she needed to find relief somewhere. All that Mary had just said was true. The blond had no intention to create such questioning in Y/N, on the contrary. But all she could think about was the hypothetical life she could have with Roger, how it was just the beginning of a long life of success and months on the road. What did she have to offer that would make him want to go home to her. She remembered what he had said about being ‘happy at home”, not the kind of life he wanted or at least that was how she interpreted his words.

She was in a middle of possessing her thoughts, finishing her glass and pouring herself another one when she noticed someone in front of her.

“I’m sorry I could not come and talk to you earlier” he said with his raspy voice, “I’m so happy you’re here. At least you’re enjoying the little party” Roger said looking at the drink in her hand

His top was still opened and sober was not the best way to describe him right now. He was looking at Y/N as if she was the most delicious piece of cake in the whole world. Y/N was immediately turned on by his gaze and shivered as he put an arm around her waist.

“I’ve missed you Roger” she said

“I’ve fucking missed you too” he whispered in her ear

He had drunk because he wanted to celebrate but also because he was afraid. Scared of how he would behave with Y/N, one of the reasons he had avoided her for so long, but now that the alcohol was rushing through his veins he could not be away from her any longer. His mouth was still next to Y/N’s head and he gently kissed her neck. He wasn’t doing anything wrong after all. They were friends with benefits and it would not be the first time that he would behave this way with her, at least on the surface.

The phone calls were more regular but they were always very short and they did not have the time to talk about all those things. Roger pointed at some people around the room, most of them wrecked as he explained what their job was on tour. They were so happy for each other, so happy to spend this moment together and sharing.

The night went on with everybody dancing and partying. Freddie was all over the place while Veronica and John left before anyone else. Brian was completely wrecked in a corner and Y/N was laughing out loud because of Roger’s silliness. She started to dance with Freddie, Roger’s wig on her head and feeling happier than ever. At some point she fell next to Roger on one couch, completely exhausted and he took her hand into his. They were so drunk they did not notice and stayed this way for a bit, looking at the mess around them.

But time came for the night to end, he would go back to his family for Christmas day and stay there until he had to leave for North America. They were on their way to go, Roger’s arm around Y/N’s waist as they were waving to say goodbye to everybody.

“Here you are my man. That was amazing!” said one of the roadie

“Thank you” Roger answered

“I bet you’re excited about going back to the U.S right? I hope you kept the numbers of your lovely ladies that kept you busy last time. Not that you can’t find new ones eh” he winked before leaving the room

Y/N was looking at the floor, taking in what she had just heard. There was nothing wrong with it really, nothing she didn’t know and nothing Roger wasn’t entitled to do. But it hurt. Because for a moment she had thought that tonight had been special but it was not. They were just having fun and that was it, she was lucky enough to call him a friend, she could not ask for more.

What I’ve learned from Youtube fitness

‘Youtube fitness’ is a challenge to all conventional definitions of fitness. It is a category on its own and a whole different ball game. On the face of it, Youtube fitness teaches us how to be ripped and strong and healthy. But look a little closer and it becomes a bustling microcosm of the modern society that provides a riveting daily account of its current condition. Like many of us, I first turned to Youtube fitness for advice on lifting and nutrition. What I’ve found there exceeded even the wildest expectations. This post will sum up some of the lessons I’ve learned...

Lesson 1. Youtube fitness is a parade of egotism and idiocy. Sometimes it takes a few videos to know you’re dealing with a moron; other times it only takes a few seconds. Some Youtubers are hilariously clueless, some dangerously delusional, some will expose the cluelessness and delusion and turn it into comedy. Some are straight up demented...

There’s also a good deal of opportunism and hostility in the mix. Personal attacks are frequently used as a traffic-boosting tactic. It is almost fascinating to watch people fight their little virtual wars, get triggered and sport verbal abuse against each other, dog on each other, have each other’s videos taken down, and so on. A 'diss’ video usually sparks a response video, and on it goes. At the end of the cycle there’s often an apology video. It’s like show business or politics - repetitive and predictable but at the same time oddly entertaining. And just like in show business or politics, a legitimate specimen is an extreme rarity. Thankfully a handful of them exist and are deservedly doing pretty well.

Lesson 2. Youtube fitness is full of bullshit advice, bullshit stories, bullshit products. After years of training, when you’ve gotten to understand that bodybuilding is a long-term game, to spot a mercenary with an agenda becomes a lot easier. The word ‘shortcut’ makes me cringe because I know there are no shortcuts unless via the syringe. But I wasn’t always like that. An eon ago when I was starting my adventure with fitness I was so gullible I’d probably pay for a sham program it if was packaged nicely. Thankfully there was no Youtube. There wasn’t even the Internet. On the bright side though, there is some legitimate advice on Youtube, too, but it does take a little bit of experience and critical thinking to spot the real deal.

Lesson 3. Youtube fitness is a business and businesses exist to make money. You must invest to get a return. By the laws of economy, the amount of money spent on producing a professional video is in inverse proportion to the value of information that video contains. It’s logical - you don't spend a fortune on advertising a product only to give it away for free afterwards. A professional crew, expensive light rigs, cameras for A-roll and B-roll, post-production - that’s a king’s ransom right there! The outcome is simply a prestigious-looking sales pitch (which is still just a sales pitch) aimed to create an impression of credibility and lure you into signing up for paid content.

Lesson 4. Youtube fitness rails against bro science but has little to offer instead, other than more bro science dressed up in sophisticated terminology. Most Youtube nutrition tutors and health experts could not answer a simple practical question. The advice is often chaotic and self-contradictory but when it is delivered in a confident manner by a guy wearing a white coat, it sure makes an impact. Sadly, the question in the title of the video hardly ever gets answered. The idea is to confuse you with vague collateral (loosely related to the subject, at best) and keep you coming back in search of answers.

Lesson 5. Youtube fitness insists on busting myths but all it does is introduce more myths. I’ll give you an example. I’ve seen videos discrediting bulking and cutting as a myth. During a bulk - so the argument goes - you’re gaining muscle but you’re also gaining fat, while during a cut you’re losing fat but also losing muscle. At the bottom of the balance sheet you’re back to where you started. That’s just silly! Fat loss is much easier and happens quicker than muscle breakdown. Plus, if you keep your routine going and ensure proper nutrition, the muscle will stay, guys. Some of the muscle glycogen will wear off and you may look a little less bulky, but you will retain the muscle. You will actually become more defined and vascular, and overall more shredded-looking.

Another example of a myth that Youtube is so eager to bust these days is the myth of overtraining. I see plenty of buff guys on there explaining to me how I’m never going to reach overtraining because overtraining is reserved for a small percentage of high-performance athletes who train extremely hard for hours every day. Oh, really? What about hormones? Each day of the week I spend 10 hours at work absolutely grilling my nervous system, which elicits the same type of stress response as does hours of training. And I do that even before I even get to the gym! So yes, I am very much at risk of experiencing overtraining symptoms, people. And so are you. You don’t have to be a professional athlete for that. I am producing cortisol like crazy for 13 to 14 hours each day, sometimes longer. It adds up!

Lesson 6. In an endless chase for click traffic, Youtubers will focus their videos on what’s popular at the time, as opposed to what’s important or valuable. Whenever a trend comes along everyone will rush to make videos about it. If you don’t offer an opinion on a popular subject your subscribers may ditch you for someone who does. And if there’s little to no research on the subject and you’re not willing or smart enough to investigate it yourself, just rip off what others did. Don’t forget to sound like you’re the smartest guy in the room. Then upload your video and call it good. A week later you won’t remember what you were advocating. Next time a trend comes along you will make a video on it too. Basically, you’ll keep replicating superficial and unverified information other Youtubers post on their channels. There will be no coherence across your content and you will contradict yourself from video to video. Worse still, you will be using whatever scant information you manage to pick up to support your agenda. That’s opportunism. And a scam.

Lesson 7. There are predominantly 4 types of Youtube fitness personalities. There’s the jacked guy with no fat on him whose looks everybody wants. There’s the blocky natural lifter, strong and intimidating, with excessive fat and barely any definition, whose deadlift is enviable, unlike his physique. There’s the almost muscular, almost shredded guy who looks like any gym debutante after a couple of months of lifting on a junk diet. Finally there’s the smart guy who doesn’t need gains because he has the brains - this one's usually fully dressed, talks like a book and likes to call himself a doctor. The jacked guy - whose bulky frame and chiseled structure are the very embodiment of your dream physique - is the type most of us will want to take advice from, in hope that it might get us his looks. Sadly - and here’s my lesson - this guy is usually on some type of synthetic compound. Whatever he preaches couldn’t work for you, unless you’re part of the Anabolic-Androgenic Syndicate… You want to listen to the naturals even if they look like shit. The nerdy doctor type may need to be taken with an extra pinch of salt though. He can quote from the book but whether he's able to relate that to fitness if he’s never done any serious lifting is another matter.

Lesson 8. Youtube is full of ‘easy' diet and exercise programs, all of which are just as worthless as they are overpriced. The truth is this: any diet or exercise plan that’s not radical is not going to produce noticeable changes. Period. To guarantee results from short- or medium-term moderate-intensity workout programmes and nutrition plans is the epitome of bullshitterism and should ring all your alarm bells. If someone is telling me I can get a jacked chest from doing twenty pushups every day, that’s not just stupid but also disrespectful of my intellectual capabilities, and of me as a viewer. Those 'x pushups a day for a month' challenges and transformation videos are fun to watch but, guys, all of this is hogwash. Muscle takes years to build and it builds in barely noticeable increments. My lesson is to remain consistent, enjoy working out, and take pride in my willpower.

To sum up, trust no one. There are a lot of channels on Youtube where you can occasionally pick up a good tip but if you’re looking for a game changer you will have to design it yourself. No one on Youtube is always right. Some advice is down right dangerous. There is no 'one size fits all' in fitness. Things that work for Peter may cause Paul a lifelong injury. Don’t take anything at face value. Personally, I use Youtube to collect exercise ideas from a few channels I’m subscribed to. I test them to see what they do to me. If I can get good quality contraction and my joints are generally OK with the movement pattern, I will include the exercise in my repertoire. But never without criticism. I apply a filter to everything I see on Youtube and make my own research outside of it. It’s safest to assume that everyone has a hidden agenda, or some sort of a bias, like when they’re covertly sponsored by a supplement company. I repeat, don’t be gullible. Investigate things yourself. Stay safe. Have fun.

note:This edition isn’t so much a love letter of sorts but rather my brainstorm of cultural differences, when comes to the idea of respect obedience and gender roles, in relation to us and our relationship.

You have taught me so much about myself over the last few weeks. As bad as this may seem, I can now admit that I can be rude and disrespectful to people, before you and I got talking, I tried my best to respect people but it is now clear that my idea of respect and your idea of respect until now were completely different. Maybe it is a cultural thing, I don’t know, but just being around you and being a part of your life you have shown me how I can improve on it all, and honestly I know at times I still may get it wrong, but that is because I am human, but you have made me aware of what I have been doing, just by the way you treat me. Respect in the western world is something that often slips through peoples hands, the new generation of young people, those in their teens, I have often seen or heard them disrespect other people in a way that when I were small it would have been unheard of. When I spoke to the lady in the Asian fashion shop last week she told me how in India and Pakistan it is how things are, that people are always courteous and respectful, especially to women and their elders. In the beginning it was a little strange to me how you seemed so lovely and nice to me in the way you spoke and as silly as it may seem I was naïve, and slightly conditioned to the western, slightly more disrespectful way of things. The way men treat women in the western world, there is rarely any of this etiquette and chivalry anymore, partly because western women are fierce about being able to stand on their own two feet, but guess what the more you dote on me like that, chivalry (opening doors and such, ‘ladies first’ etc.) the more I see how polite and awesome it is. I really see how the way men treat women in Pakistan is like us women are like queens and princesses, and how the idea of ‘obedience’ to your husband really actually works in reality.

Ok, in today’s society in the UK things don’t often happen like that because of how society itself has changed and therefore the expectations and roles within relationships. When you first told me about how men and women are in theory in relationships, that women only have to respect their husband and value their opinions, and how men pretty much want to bend over backwards to provide for and make their wives happy and feel valued, the first thing that came to mind was, that is how it was pre-second world war Britain, and even more so before the time of the British suffragette movement where women campaigned for gender equality. In the start of the 20th century and before in the UK, it was the mans role and responsibility to be the so called ‘breadwinner�� and go out to work and it was the women’s role to value and respect his efforts and to run the household and bring up the children, after all being a mother was is and will always be a full time job in its own right. That was until of course us western women found the freedoms that the working life can bring, during the second world war, when women went to work to fill the gap in the workforce while men went out to war.

These days it is more common for the western girls to want to be career women before becoming mothers and wives, apparently, so I have been told that in Pakistan there is no expectation or pressure on women to be achievers, and career women in the same way as western British girls are. Yes, in some ways I do want to be like that western girl, and work hard to get the career that I want for myself, but then at the same time I am a traditionalist and I see one of the greatest of things in terms of femininity is becoming a mother, and watching my own future children grow up and give them the best that I can.

I have also discovered a few weeks back the reasons why men treat women like they are princesses or their queens. It is because us women are the one’s who carry those children for 9 months at a time, and in great pain bring them into this world (I have heard that labour feels like having the equivalent of having 20 bones broken at each contraction, and it goes on for hours). I know first hand from professional experience how exhausting it is the experience and the journey going from a woman to a mother, and it makes sense for that reason why husbands, boyfriends and children look up to and respect the women, wives and mothers in society, because bringing children into the world is probably one of the most privileged, honoured and loved things a woman can do, and despite how far the medical profession (I hate how medicalised obstetrics and gynaecology has become, childbirth is one of the most natural and feminine things in the world) has become it still carries risk; people often have an idea of how their idea pregnancy and birth happens, but reality is, is still a process that no one has complete control over, and as far as I am concerned that is part of the beauty of it.

Sometimes I wish that young people in the UK were way more respectful than they are now. Many youngsters these days wouldn’t think twice about it when they backchat or disrespect their elders or parents. Being a young woman of tradition and being brought up to respect my elders, including calling those who are not family but are family friends by aunty or uncle, I honestly wish things in some ways were like they used to be here, before everything changed with the ‘modern’ times. Knowing you has opened up my eyes to how rude Britain and British people can be, unfortunately including myself. Since a wife is supposed to be obedient to her husband I hate it when I end up being rude to you, and I do try my best not to do it. It is like I want to be miss goody two shoes for you so that I respect you. Even now I find myself coming to you and asking for your opinion and ideas around things that is because I actually value your opinion and ideas. Your opinion matters.

I know I wont be and cant always be that ‘obedient’ wife that you want, and that is because I am human and it is a part of human nature to have faults and wrong doings, but it is the ability to acknowledge when as a person I do disrespect people, to be the better side of me, swallow my pride and to actually say sorry. All the same, I do want to try my best to be that person you want to spend the rest of your life with as your wife.

In today’s western society, our idea of what a good relationship is, is a little old fashioned, backwards. This is because we don’t really want to have this modern longer-term boyfriend girlfriend type relationship before we think of settling down, and because the roles in a relationship are similar to what they used to be here in early 1900s, with a modern twist. But I simply see it as traditionalist. I like it being the way things used to be here, and the fact is we are both ready to settle down in life. I like how it basically comes down to respect and honesty, and having no expectations of one person over another. You have already explained to me that if I want to go out to work and be that modern girl you wouldn’t want to stop me, and that you still see yourself as being in that role of a traditional husband. Who says that being from completely different backgrounds means that we cant find our own way through life, because I think we can. We can find our own blend of Pakistani – British life, and relationship. After all, isn’t that what relationships are? Teamwork!, (and finding your own way through) albeit with you as our team leader, and life is what you make it. Besides, we both know what we want in life, and we both know what we want from this relationship. It is because we are both so sure and want to do all we can to make this happen, is what I feel makes us so strong already, and because we both want to be there for each other.

I know I still have a lot to learn about what your ideas of things are, and about what you want in life, and although to some people it may seem like that I am being ‘hot headed’ or ‘rushing’, I know what I want and I am happy with the decision I have made for myself. I can truly see myself being happy with you by my side.

So now you know what I have learned over the last few weeks, about the differences in culture, and how I actually think your way of doing things may possibly even be better. I certainly love your idea of respect and being doted on. And you have most certainly taught me a lot of new things about myself, some things I already knew but were naïve to, and some completely knew, especially about what I want for me in a relationship. Before I met you I was more about having a laugh and a lark, and I still am but in a much more serious grown up way. I am done with messing around, I want to put my feet in the ground as such and make my life sorted for the future.

How Tim Walked His Way to a 50-Pound Weight Loss. Wait. WHAT!?

“Holy crap! Seriously!?”

It was 1 AM, and I was sitting, bleary-eyed at my computer in a hotel room in Barcelona. Like many people, instead of sleeping I had been messing around on Facebook (oops!) and happened across a thread with a Nerd Fitness reader who said the following:

“Nutrition is 90% of the battle, right? Well I’ve seen that in action over the last few months. I was unable to continue workouts due to a health issue and have had to rely COMPLETELY on walking and nutrition to find results. I think the pictures speak for themselves.

I am not done, I have only begun, but now that I can (hopefully) begin workouts again after seeing my doctor in a couple weeks, I look forward to even greater results! What followed were the photos you see above… right!?

My jaw hit the floor when I saw Tim’s 7 month before and “during” photos. I seriously yelled out loud “Holy sh**!” when I saw them, and I couldn’t help but smile. I wanted to share Tim’s success story with you today, because I want YOUR success story six months from now!

Tim, a recovering gambling addict and single dad of 4 kids (!), is a proud member of the Nerd Fitness Academy and based his exercise, mindset, and nutritional strategy on the information presented there. However, I want to point out that Tim had NO gym membership, NO fancy trainer, NO magic bullet, and NO wonder supplements.

I’ve been bouncing emails back and forth with Tim and noticed VERY interesting details in his success – tons of things that many would have seen as obstacles (or worse…excuses to justify inaction!). Tim, on the other hand, actually succeeded in part BECAUSE of these setbacks.

Today you’re going to learn how to surprise yourself 7 months from now – WITHOUT “EXERCISING”.

Six months from now, I want you to look at your “before” and “during” photos with a shocked smile. (It would help if you took photos today!)

Why are you doing this?

I asked Tim what prompted his big change, and why did he think he was successful. His answer about Big WHY really jumped out at me, something we talk about at Nerd Fitness a lot too.

I thought [this journey, after failing repeatedly before] would be harder, but after working through the Big Why (several times) I focused on “baby steps” like getting rid of liquid calories, stop putting sugar on things, no ice cream, etc. Little-by-little, I got to where I am today. One day at a time, sometimes one moment at a time!

I looked at what I COULD do rather than what I couldn’t, and that freed me up to find the slimmer, healthier me inside of all the fat and junk that was clinging to me. I am not fat. I am not garbage. I am me, and I am glorious. I am not a special snowflake, I am a lean, healthy badass (sort of) who will not let circumstances get in the way of me being who I was created to be so that I can be a great example to my kids and loved ones of what a healthy, intentional, good man looks like.

As you’re getting started on your journey, DIG DEEP and really think about WHY you’re doing this. You might need to go three levels deep (like Inception) and keep asking why to get to the root of your reasons for changing:

I want to lose weight. Why?

Because I want to feel better. Why?

Because I don’t like where my life is going and I want to be a better example for my kids. OKAY!

If you don’t have a good reason for getting in shape (“because my doctor told me to” isn’t going to cut it long term), you’ll use any reason to give up along the way! “Shoot, it’s cold out. Can’t exercise today.” “I had a bad day at work – I deserve this treat.” “Meh, tomorrow.”

However, if you have a damn good reason for why you are embarking upon this journey (like Tim did), you’re going to be more likely to actually stick with your plan even when life gets busy, your kids get sick, and so on.

Personally, I’m on this journey because I want to find out what I’m capable of. I feel a responsibility to this community to take care of myself and a responsibility to the future me to be healthy. I’m also doing this because I know how great it feels to hit a personal best, nail a new gymnastics move, and look in the mirror with pride at what I’ve built. It makes me happy.

How about you? Spend a few minutes journaling or writing out your thoughts and dig as deep as you can until you get to the root of your desire to get fit.

The Right Mentality at the Start

Now, this is where most people get thrown off.

After determining your big why, you need to have the right mentality for beginning your journey too.

The NF Community asked Tim what he thought about his transformation looking back at himself after 7 months:

“If you’d told me I could lose 50 pounds in 7 months with just changing my diet and walking, I would have told you to take a long walk off a short pier! I can hardly believe it myself.”

I bet you read that sentence above and thought, “I’ve heard THAT before, on every late night infomercial promising me amazing results if I buy their workout equipment or ab coaster or whatever.” The difference here is that you don’t need to buy anything, you need to change your strategy.

Tim is an actual person (a single dad with 4 kids!) from our community, with a family, a real job, and he’s not trying to sell anything in that sentence. In fact, that sentence was shared privately with our community, and only after he posted it did I ask if I could share it.

Tim said the toughest change he had to make was his own mindset. As a recovering gambling addict (6 years and counting – congrats Tim!), he knew he had mental demons to overcome when it came to getting healthy:

“I did a pretty good job of wrecking my life and found myself seven years ago being forced to do something about it. The biggest thing I learned from that experience of entering recovery (I have six years of sobriety) is that the pain had to outweigh the fear of change before I would do anything to recover. Unfortunately at that point it was too late for my marriage, my career, and a few other things I deeply regret destroying as a result of my addiction.

I learned that I do not need to fear change, I just need to recognize it, lean into the pain, and do the next right thing. So as I moved through recovery from a gambling addiction I soon found that there were other areas in my life that needed change as well. Shocker!

The pain needed to outweigh the fear of change before I would do anything to recover.”

Two years ago, he stepped on a scale saw “300 lbs” for the first time in his life. Although he never identified himself as big or fat, stepping on that scale shook him to his core and made him realize he needed to change.

Tim found Nerd Fitness in June of 2016, where we talk about the importance of mindset and the right strategies to get started:

In recovery from addiction I was told many times, “If you want what we have, then do what we do,” and that’s the message I heard from you, Steve, and the rest of the Nerd Fitness team: We aren’t here to tell you what to do, we are simply telling you what worked for us nerds, so if you want what we have, then do what we do.

I also liked that there was a monetary cost to [The Nerd Fitness Academy], because it meant I had skin in the game. The best things in life cost me something, whether it was time, money, blood, sweat, or tears, and I was ready to make a change.

Sounds pretty freaking badass but believe me, I was not, nor am I, a badass. I’m just a guy who ran across your program which showed me three things: First, the problem; Second, the solution; and Third, how to implement that solution.

Although Tim invested in himself, you do not need to spend money to find results. However, having some “skin in the game” might cause you to take this action more seriously – I know it does for me (I hired a friend, Anthony Mychal, to be my virtual trainer to keep me accountable!). And how much is being healthy and happy worth to you? How much can you afford to invest in yourself?

Again, no need to spend money up front to get “skin in the game.” Can you give money to a friend of yours and commit to what you’re going to do, and then he’ll give you the money back? Or tell a friend you’ll donate $X to a cause you hate if you don’t follow through on your goals?

It’s how Saint dropped 60 pounds in time for his wedding – he put his money where he mouth was!

Now, let’s look back at the rest of Tim’s statement above. Tim attacked his problem head-on and had a serious conversation with his brain:

I need to change. I do not need to fear change. Change is good.

I’ve tried and failed in the past. How can I try differently this time?

Change is good. This next attempt needs to be different from previous attempts if I’m going to get in shape this time. So, what SHOULD you do?

Do Less. Go Slow. REALLY Slow.

If you’re like most people, you’ve said to yourself recently, “this is the year I’m going to get in shape.”

And you might have done all sorts of things and maybe even succeeded so far:

Signed up for a gym

Gone to the gym every day

Bought workout DVDs and followed them dutifully

Drastically changed your entire nutritional strategy

Started flossing

Add another 5 things.

Tim’s success, I believe, is due to the fact that he did LESS than ALL of those things above!

When he started his most recent journey, he hurt himself by doing too much during a workout and was told by the doctor he couldn’t strength train for 6+ months! I bet if you were told you couldn’t exercise for 6 months, then the idea of ‘getting in shape’ would now be gone. But this was, ironically, exactly what Tim needed to succeed. “Oh, I can still walk…” Perfect. That is enough to radically transform your body.

In fact, I’m going to tell you to NOT work out if you’re starting from a sedentary lifestyle.

Yes, this is a fitness website telling you not to work out.

In fact, I think exercise sucks! I don’t do it. Instead, I train in a fun way that I am excited about.

If you just want to lose weight and feel better about yourself (Like Tim did), going for a walk and focusing nearly all of your energy on nutrition will get you 90% of the way there! Once you get to a baseline of health and fitness and have lost significant weight, then you can focus on building the physique you want.

So, disregard what people in infomercials or magazine ads look like – those people train 20+ hours a week, have super genetics, are probably on steroids, and/or don’t use the equipment or workout strategy they are advertising.

Instead, keep it simple and your expectations in check. Tim couldn’t exercise, and that allowed him to focus on just TWO THINGS:

Going for a walk. Tim doesn’t enjoy running, so he just went for hikes and walks. That’s it. This allowed him to mentally check a box that said “I did something healthy today”

Finally accepting that nutrition was 90% of the battle, so he should be focusing 90% of his mental energy on adjusting that.

How much time do you think about THE PERFECT workout strategy, and if you should do 10 sets of 10, 5 sets of 5, or something in between? Do you worry about getting your heart rate to the perfect “fat burning zone” or anything like that? What about going from cardio kickboxing to yoga to weights to underwater aerobics?

Scale your thinking WAY back.

How can you make SMALL but permanent changes to your exercise strategy? When you make a change, make such a tiny change that you understand that you are making this change forever. This is what you do now:

Decide to walk a certain amount of minutes this week. This is what you do now.

Cut back on one extra soda this week. This is your new normal.

ONLY after that you’ve built a walking habit would we recommend you start to implement something basic like a body weight training routine once a week, or even just challenging yourself to do some push-ups each morning when you wake up.

Nutrition is Everything. EVERYTHING.

Nutrition. Nutrition. Nutrition.

We talk about nutrition more than any other subject at Nerd Fitness, because it’s everything. And that’s not what most people like to hear.

How you eat will be responsible for 80-90% of the success or failure you will have moving forward. So you need to attack your nutrition with a solid strategy.

This means two things:

ANY workout strategy will WORK with the right diet: walking, yoga, zumba, dancing, rock climbing, strength training. Literally anything physical if you stick with it.

ANY workout strategy will FAIL with the wrong diet. If you don’t eat well, no amount of training will fix that.

It’s why one of our Rules of the Rebellion is “you can’t outrun your fork.”

Again, most people do best with SMALL changes over LONG periods of time. It’s is how Tim won. In his own words, he was not a big fan of the Paleo Diet (read our beginner’s guide here) mentality, though his nutritional strategy now closely aligns with it.

We’re not gung-ho Paleo advocates either. (We like that it’s a simple mental model you can follow to learn what to eat and what to avoid, but we agree that you should probably dip your toe in pool and slowly wade in).

This is why the NF Academy Nutritional Blueprint is laid out in 10 levels, and Tim liked the small transitional changes to how he ate:

You said that nutrition was most of the battle, so I chose to accept that, and in doing so I sloughed off the false belief I had been carrying around which told me that nutrition was not the main thing, that working out and burning calories was the main thing. I had to accept what you and your team said: mindset + nutrition + exercise = health.

I started at level 2 (basic calorie counting). I had already been trying to track calories but wasn’t sticking to any good eating habits until I started at Nerd Fitness Academy.

My first official step was eliminating liquid calories. Baby steps work!

I then started eliminating processed foods from my diet one meal at a time. I took a week to eliminate them from breakfast, then the next week I removed them from lunch, the third week it was dinner, and the fourth week was snacks. That last one was HARD. It’s too easy to hit the vending machine rather than bring good snacks for the day!

I would say it took me another couple months to finally get through Level 5 and 6, pasta and bread were staples for me, with every meal.

All-in-all it took me four months to get to Level 7 if my memory is right. I blended it with Dr. Fuhrman’s “Nutritarian” diet mindset, so while I avoid breads, I partake occasionally, and I don’t avoid meats like Dr. Fuhrman would have me do.

READ THAT AGAIN. Tim didn’t go on a diet, and you should NEVER go on a diet ever again either. Tim didn’t say “I’m gonna follow this strategy for 6 months and then I can go back to how I was eating before.” Instead, small permanent changes, and that’s just his new “normal.”

Shift your nutritional mentality and make small changes you can live with. Here’s exactly what Tim changed over FOUR months:

Minimization of liquid calories. You’ll be surprised how many calories and how much sugar is in ‘healthy’ apple juice!

Cut back significantly on sugar. Sugar is worse than Jar Jar Binks.

Cut back on processed carbs (bread, pizza, pasta, etc.).

Eat more vegetables and fruits (though don’t eat only fruit – that also has lots of sugar!), and some meat.

Check out intermittent fasting and deciding it worked for him.

When you make these changes gradually over time, it’s much easier to live with and adjust what your body decides is “normal,” building serious momentum.

And NEVER underestimate momentum.

Accountability and Momentum.

Now, I’d be remiss if I didn’t talk about two final pieces of the puzzle that helped Tim succeed, and they will help you succeed too.

Having people to help keep you accountable and building momentum.

Tim loved having that level of accountability (and having invested in himself) and having people on the same journey has him to help stay on target:

I find that being able to “tell on myself” when I step out of line to people I trust is incredibly helpful and helps ensure that the momentum in my life continues to move forward.

If I sit and do nothing, I invariably backslide and find myself worse off.

As a mentor of mine likes to remind me, “There is no ‘gress’, only Pro-gress or Re-gress. If you stop you will only move backwards, never forwards. Keep at it day-by-day, little-by-little, focusing on doing the next right thing and before you know it, you’ve climbed the mountain, reached the moon, or made your kid’s day.” I don’t do that perfectly, I just try to keep at it.

Sometimes the people around you have good intentions but don’t have the right understanding (of nutrition, health, and fitness) to be supportive. That’s why surrounding yourself with people who can be truly supportive (like Tim did online with the NF Rebellion) is so key. When I asked Tim if he had support at home, he said:

“Yes, they were. However, when I started using Intermittent Fasting they looked at me sideways. I am a single father of four kids so they couldn’t do much to object, but my friends at first thought I was nuts. I had some who were on board and encouraged me, but some of my friends thought I was crazy.

Now, however, they are ALL asking me what I did to lose so much weight (they don’t ask about health as much as weight, unfortunately). It’s hard to argue with results!”

Remember, for years and years, broken and god-awful fitness and diet advice has been spread throughout the country and world. Our friends and family often believe things that aren’t fully true, even if they have the best intentions at heart when they question your decisions.

You didn’t become who you are today alone, don’t forge into tomorrow alone either.

Focus on the Next Thing.

I don’t know where you can be 6 months from now. That depends on where you are now, your genetics, your lifestyle, and everything in between.

But neither do you. So don’t worry about it! It’ll get here soon enough.

You can’t fix the past (though you can learn from it), and you can’t control the future (though you can influence it)… so you might as well focus on today, right?

Focus on your next meal, and add one more vegetable.

Focus on your next beverage choice, and make sure it has minimal sugar.

Focus on your lunch break, and see if you can go for a walk.

Do not overthink this. Do not worry about where you will be six months from now. Instead do the following:

Ask yourself WHY you are doing this. Dig deep. Write it down and hang it somewhere to remind yourself every day.

Don’t exercise unless you enjoy it. Walking is fine. So is dance, rock climbing, zumba, swimming, and anything else.

Nutrition is 90% of the battle. Put almost all of your focus there.

Small changes over many months will give you the best chance for success.

Invest in yourself. Put your money where your mouth is – you’ll take this next attempt more seriously.

Stop worrying about how soon you’ll “get there.” Remember that you never really “arrive,” so you need to find a way to make sustainable daily life changes. Keep them simple and small. But permanent.

A funny thing happens when you do the above. 6 months from now, you just might wake up, look back at a photo of yourself from today (you DID take photos today, right?), and say out loud to yourself: “Holy sh**.” And then you can email us and we can share your story with the world.
