Alonzo, protector of kittens’ virtue?

Usually the fifth couple in Bomba’s honky-tonk is Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer. But in the 1998 film we get something unusual: the participation of two characters who are, more or less, named swings. Including one whom we almost always think of as a kitten.

Bombalurina, starts to dance, others join in, ah yes, sexy mature queens being sexy - hang on, ETCETERA? Get back into the kitten corner. You can flirt in a baby way with Tugger, but surely this is not a dance for you?

Look at the boys in the background. Tugger slinging his arm over George’s shoulder. ‘Okay, kit, you ready? Need some TIPS? Follow my lead, let’s do this thing.’ Coricopat also just checking in slightly with Big Sexy Rock Star Cat. Alonzo ready to do his slinky thing.

At this point you’d expect George to go for Etcetera and Alonzo for Cassandra, given how they pair up in the Great Cat Orgy and how Alonzo is usually paired with Cassandra. But instead…

ah yes the boys are in town. but what is this? alonzo goes for the kitten. George is… a little overwhelmed to find himself with Cassandra.

HELP WAY OUT OF MY LEAGUE but I will make :D face anyway because that is what I do. good thing Tugger gave him a pep talk beforehand.

Meanwhile everyone does some sexy dancing, Alonzo’s got the kitten.... but that’s not Alonzo in full flirt mode. In fact, he looks almost bored. Etcetera is a happy boppy little thing who gets to play with the big girls, until suddenly…

(cut for length)

Well, that was just the end of that little dance section, right? Maybe for the other queens. But for Etcetera that was very definitely a ‘right, you’re grounded’. Look...

When Etcetera first joins in, Jenny is on top of the car with Mungojerrie, and reacts - looking at them all, then at her, then that little lift of the paw right before the shot ends, when Etcetera does her first big kick (aka, Jo employs her usual talent for kicking herself in the head):

Train dad runs on and makes an agitated little gesture to Jenny, beckoning her down - interestingly, Mungojerrie gets involved in this and comes down too.

Chaos boy don’t know exactly what’s going on but he got the spirit. Jemima catches the anxious mood! She needs train dad cuddles! Of course he will always give her cuddles.

they clutch their pearls together, with Jemima between them (possibly getting ideas into her innocent pure little head)

If that slinky black and white bastard puts one paw out of place…

But Slinky Bastard is not a Dumbass. As soon as he gets the lift, over the shoulder she goes and straight back to the chaperones. Then he zooms away offstage.

You can read this either as:

Alonzo sees Etcetera dancing and swaps with George so he can dance with her, but knows better than to push his luck with Skimbleshanks and Jenny.

or, and this is my favourite because it makes me giggle:

Alonzo went in there intending to do his usual thing with Cassandra but when he saw how Etcetera was dancing his Tribe Protector instincts kicked in. ‘Nope,’ he says to George, ‘not this time, buddy, look after Cassandra for me’. (George: ?????!? um? HELP? Tugger: I got your back, bud!) Alonzo dances with Etcetera just long enough that it isn’t blatantly dragging her off by her ear, but with minimal contact and sexiness, especially by comparison with Tugger/Bomba (or even Plato/Demeter).  Then he picks her up and dumps her in the time-out corner. He doesn’t just sweep her away sensuously like the other four pairs: he runs ahead of them to drop her with parents, then he stalks away. While she looks after him and goes “… hey”. No serious sexy flirting and cuddles for you, young lady.

Conclusion: Alonzo, slinky bastard who can get a bit fresh with the ladies but who knows how to draw the line somewhere.
