contestabile: Hi everyone! Wanted to share some @ourflaghbomax insights after stumbling upon a fantastic Tumblr post by @mondfahrt (google it!). They captured the meaning and subtext perfectly, but here's a little extra.
Mary's painting studio embraced a non-period-correct style inspired by Cubism, Expressionism, and American modernism. While the iconic lighthouse painting had already been established, we needed to fill the entire art studio/barn with similar styles quickly. To achieve that, we drew inspiration from the works of Georgia O'Keeffe and Carl Newman.
Many artists contributed, but a special shoutout goes to @ozone_ue_skp for creating some incredible paintings. O'Keeffe-inspired close shots of flowers were “easily” rendered in the cubist/lighthouse style. Interestingly, we sourced rough sketches by Carl Newman, expanding and completing them in Mary's unique style. Multiple pieces were painted in different states of completion, reflecting progress throughout the episode.
The set was a redress of the Warner Bros Jungle cabin, used in various productions from Dexter to Star Trek. It's interesting to see how it can transform to fit so many different atmospheres.
I also must say it’s amazing to see the #ofmd community embracing the show and appreciating the attention to detail. As a follower myself, I'm grateful for the fans' passion. Although I didn't work on season 2 due to it being filmed in New Zealand, I'm eagerly anticipating it alongside all of you.
Lastly, congratulations to the OFMD Art Department for their well-deserved @adgawards_official win earlier this year. It was an absolute honor to have been part of such a talented team.

contestabile: @ourflaghbomax ‘s final episode takes us to the town of St. George. This was actually shot on the Warner Bros. backlot in on Midwest Street, which has been used for everything from Gilmore Girls, to La La Land, to The Music Man. With the help of a “boatful” of research, Production Designer @bradrubin expertly modified the existing side of the street, then designed the other side of the street from the ground up. @mexiruviann drew plans faster than the wind that blows the sails of the Revenge and a town was built in just a few weeks. Dirt was brought in to cover the blacktop street. The jaguar was real and so was the piano dropped on Stede. Fun times all around.
contestabile: Last summer I had to opportunity to work with an amazing crew on the @HBOMax series Our Flag Means Death @ourflaghbomax . Working on a pirate show has been a dream job of mine since I worked aboard an actual ‘pirate ship,’ the Brig Pilgrim of Dana Point, back in college at @ocean_institute . It wasn’t an actual pirate ship, but rather a replica of the Brig Pilgrim made famous from the book ‘Two Years Before the Mast.’ We did a living history program for school kids and occasionally sailed her out to Catalina. No pillaging etc.
In the early weeks of the pandemic, the Pilgrim started taking on water and sank dockside. The decision was made to scrap her and while choice “parts and pieces” were saved from the dump, she was completely demolished.
When I joined the crew of OFMD halfway through the series, I was able to make contact with some old colleagues from the Pilgrim to acquire some of those “parts and pieces” that were saved, one of which was the fore topsail yard arm. (second yard up on the front mast.) We were able to use this for a quick scene where the character Roach does some “yardies” and jumps off the yard.
The Pilgrim had been used in film for decades. Everything from Spielberg’s Amistad, to the notorious "Ghost Galleon" in Power Rangers: Turbo, to the exploitation film She Creature and the parody Epic Movie. I even sailed her to San Pedro for a Vegas commercial before I was even working in film. Her yard arm in OFMD will likely be the last piece of her ever filmed…

contestabile: Our Flag Means Death’s @ourflaghbomax main set, The Revenge, (Stede’s ship) was built on one of the newest soundstages at Warner Bros Studios which was previously used for Christopher Nolan’s film Tenet. A giant “J” shaped LED screen was used for virtual backdrops instead of green screens for much of the “at sea” scenes. This allowed the crew to film in a sound stage instead of the open ocean. It also helped eliminate a whole lot of green screen VFX work.
To get the most out of the LED “J”, the ship was designed and engineered to break apart into 3 pieces which were then pushed out of the way with forklifts. This would create room for other ships, islands, docks, bluffs, and anything else that an LED wall could be used for.
And whenever you see water that isn’t in the deep background, it’s actually computer generated!

contestabile: Here’s some fun ‘behind the scenes’ shots for a very simple set on Our Flag Means Death. @ourflaghbomax
The infamous Blind Man’s Cove crab/turtle knife fight scene was shot at Leo Carrillo State Beach in Malibu. Everything from Inception, The Karate Kid and The Good Place have been filmed here.
What appears to be a tropical cove is actually a miles long dry, desert beach. There wasn’t a cove on this stretch of beach, nor palm trees, so we were tasked with building a rock wall and adding a bunch of fake palm trees and tropical plants.
The palm trees are fiberglass trunks with a specialty ‘head’ that real palm fronds are inserted into. The south side cliff of our “cove” are plastered flats painted to match the existing north side cliffs. We had to plan the set construction around the tides, otherwise waves would have taken our set pieces out to sea!! It was a lot of fun turning a very rugged beach into a tropical paradise for just a day.

*fun fact: The round red and white building in the first video was originally built for the Stede/Ed kiss scene as the base of a lighthouse but was cut. With a repaint and a that he’d roof, we reused that piece to help lengthen the set for the jaguar entrance.
