Char dham yatra
Char Dham Yatra is a tour of the four Hindu shrines starting from Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath yatra and Badrinath yatra. These temples are situated in Uttarakhand's Garhwal area. Chota Char Dham Yatra is another name for this pilgrimage. The holy rivers Yamuna, Maa Ganga, Mandakani, and Alakhnanda all originate in Yamunotri, whereas Saraswati and Mandakani come from Badrinath. Kedarnath is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Shiva which is considered to be the main places of worship of Lord Shiva in India. Every devotee hopes to visit these four shrines at least once in their lifetime.
The Kedarnath yatra is a trip to an ancient temple and is believed to have been built by the Pandavas during the Mahabharata era. The temple is built in the traditional style of North Indian architecture and is adorned with intricate carvings and sculptures. The temple complex also includes several other smaller shrines dedicated to different deities. The temple is open for only 6 months in a year due to snow and weather conditions. To make sure the char dham trip is hassle free, tourists are required to book kedarnath yatra package in advance.
The journey to Kedarnath is not only physically challenging but also mentally demanding. The high altitude, thin air and steep terrain test one's endurance and willpower. But the journey is also spiritually uplifting. The natural beauty of the Himalayas, the serene atmosphere, and the feeling of being close to the divine all help to cleanse the mind and body.
It is thought that those who finish the Kedarnath Yatra reach Moksha and atone for their misdeeds. Hindus always do their parikrama (rotation) from left to right in a clockwise pattern. As a result, Yamunotri is visited first, followed by Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath.
Visitors can explore the nearby villages and interact with the local people to gain insights into the rich cultural heritage of the region. The town is also known for its traditional crafts and cuisines, and visitors can experience the local culture by visiting local markets and trying regional dishes. The mode of transport can be fixed while booking your kedarnath yatra package.
During the yatra, you'll have the opportunity to witness traditional Hindu rituals and ceremonies, and to connect with local communities and other pilgrims. The Char Dham Yatra is not just a journey to four holy shrines, but also a journey of self-discovery and personal growth. The experience of travelling to the Char Dham is one that stays with you long after the journey is over, and will be cherished forever. Every year, on Akshay Tritiya, which falls around the final week of April or in the middle of May, the Gangotri and Yamunotri temples open. During Maha Shivratri, Kedarnath Ji's opening dates are declared, and on Basant Panchami, Badrinath Ji's opening date.
Kedarnath yatra and its surrounding areas offer a unique and unforgettable destination that combines natural beauty and spiritual significance. Whether you are a pilgrim or an adventure enthusiast, there is something for everyone in this beautiful region.

Char Dham Yatra — The ways to Attain Moksh or Salvation in Hinduism
Tumblr media
Moksh !!! A word with which every Hindu is able to relate. Attaining salvation is the ultimate purpose of life is Hinduism. It is a popular belief within the Hindu community conducting Char Dham Yatra is one of the ways to attain Moksh or Salvation. This what gets to me to write the blog about the pious Chardham yatra.
Before getting into the technical details let me take you a walk down the lane of history of Chardham Yatra. Chardham Yatra was founded around 1200 years ago by the renowned sage Shri Adi Shankaracharya. While, the original Chardham yatra comprised of Badrinath, Dwarka, Puri and Rameshwaram the latter in 20th century was shortened to Badrinath, Kedarnath, Yamunotri and Gangotri.
The cost, duration in the newer version of Chardham yatra was lesser compared to the original Chardham yatra. In order to absolve oneself of all the bad karma;s one undertakes the journey of Chardham, this is the major driving force behind this tour which attracts Lakhs of tourist every year, ultimately giving livelihood options to the people residing in these areas. Not many are aware that Chardham Yatra is undertaken in a sequence and people land up conducting the pilgrimage in a manner that suits their convenience.
Best Time For Chardham yatra
The Chardham yatra is open period of May to September (Excluded July due to heavy Rainy Season), with every year having a different opening and closing date based on the Hindu tradition of parikrama or clockwise succession.
The reason to follow the sequence is because of the significance attached to it. The sequence is as follows Yamunotri, Gangotri, kedarnath and Badrinath.
To begin with Yamunotri, it is the believed that Yamuna is the sister of Yamraj. On the auspicious occasion of Bhaidooj Yamraj promised Yamuna that whosoever takes a dip in the holy river of Yamuna would not be taken to Yamlok and attain salvation.
The next is Gangotri, the source of river Ganga which descended to Earth upon the meditation of king Bhagirath, it is said that by bathing in the Ganges one is not only freed from all their sins but also embraces goodness.
Kedarnath shrine dedicated to lord Shiva is one of the most important ,shrines in the Chardham yatra and it attains this importance due to the fact that is it also a part of 12 jyotirlinga’s.( Blog on 12 Jyotirlinga to follow soon).
Badrinath, last but not the least this shrine id dedicated to lord Vishnu who is the protector and preserver of the entire universe. This place has special importance as Shri Adi Shankaracharya attained salvation over here and became free on the cycle reincarnation.
Route & Time Taken to Chardham yatra
Inspite of the four sites being located pretty close to each other the higher mountain ranges make it very difficult to have a direct road connection amongst them.
I started my Pilgrimage with Yamunotri the first dham which is located in Uttarkashi district, one has to stay in Janki Chatti and then undertake a 6 km walk to the main temple. There are three temples along the route the first one being Ram Temple which lies to your right. You will get a hot water spring at Yamunotri. It would take approx 4–6 hours to travel from Janki chatti to Yamunotri.
After soaking in the experience of Yamunotri I proceeded to Gangotri from Janki Chatti. I started my journey at round 6 am and reached the Gangotri before sunset. The temple of Gangotri is located in the town itself, though the origin is in Gomukh. This leaves many of the pilgrims in a fix whether to travel all the way to Gomukh. The trek to Gomukh would take 2 days from Gangotri. The first destination on the route being Bhojbasa, the trek is 14kms from Gangotri which is pretty steep for the first 100 steps which leaves one exhausted though after it the trek is a cakewalk. The time duration is of 6–8 hours. Bhojbasa has located 4 km from Gomukh. One can start early next day and reach Gomukh in an hour and a half. Gomukh being the is the source of river Ganga completes your pilgrim to Gangotri. Spend some time at Gomukh and walk back to Bhojbasa. The distance Bhojbasa to Gangotri should be completed in nearly 4 hours. Gangotri completed my second dham and also taught me to be closer to nature and feel the sense of serenity. Away from the hustle bustle of life it gave me one important lesson of life “Stay tuned with nature and things will fall in place” You can take back your own learning which I am sure will be pretty different and thoughtful.
The Lord revered by the human’s as well the ghost; yes you guessed it right Shiv. The aesthetic yogi, who is absorbed within himself. The third dham is dedicated to Lord Shiva, Kedarnath. Kedarnath is located in the Rudraprayag district. I started my journey to the mystical place. One has to travel to kedarnath from Gangotri is via Gaurikund and I will intimate you in advance that it is a whopping 310 kms via the mountainous ranges and it could take as long as 14 Kms to reach Gaurikund. The buses start as early as 4 am and the last bus leaves at 7 am after which there are no direct buses. One may have to take a pit stop at Uttarkashi in order to reach Gaurikund.
Gaurikund is where the road concludes itself from there one has to walk the trail. For Kedarnath yatra one needs to obtain a fitness certificate which can be obtained from Sonprayag. Incase if your health conditions are not sound you may be denied the trek of 14kms. Don’t be disheartened one still has the option to go by helicopter. The view of kedarnath is worth every pain one undertakes. The 3,000 year old temple with Himalayan backdrop is a treat to an eye. Pandavas had built this temple which makes it all the more significant.
Post the health checkup if one is allowed to undertake the trek their next stop from Gaurikund would be Rambara. Posts the disastrous flood of 2013 people have fear instilled in their minds that route is no longer safe. However, My experience was quite positive while trekking. Rambara is 11Km away from Gaurikund.
Rambara is 3 Km away from Kedarnath which takes around 2–3 hours to reach the temple. After obtaining the blessings of Kedarnath one can come and stay at Gaurikund. Kedarnath taught me detachment, to be part of the society and yet detach oneself from them. Yes this is what Lord Shiva also embraces.
After a Night stay at Gaurikund I headed to Badrinath. The distance from Gaurikund to Badrinath is 300 Km and one take’s roughly 10–12 Hours to reach Badrinath.
Badrinath along with being the abode of Lord Vishnu is also the source of river Alakhnanda. What makes Badrinath equally important is the belief that Pandavas had passed through Badrinath and the town of Mana, which has famous Mana caves where sage Vyasya is believed to have written Mahabharta.
After completing the Fourth Dham one can leave for Rishikesh next day morning. The buses start as early as 4 am.
Points to remember:
Extreme climate conditions are a part and parcel of this tour.
Carry basic medication along with you and warm clothes as well.
Foods that keep you warm and some other knick knacks.
Photo ID which would be essential part.

Thanks to #BRO #rudraprayag Without this bridge we would never have got connected to each other so easily, Their hard effort in bringing us close to mountains is truly amazing work... I always see them as emotional connect to nature, Above the rivers they hang so strong that today our vehicles find privilege to cross by... I don’t remember even a single bridge I may have missed watching and possibly documenting, I some how truly love them as they have given me opportunity to look beyond my routine surrounding, That Solid Iron across the river gives me more strength to travel beyond my imaginations... I know those bridges will certainly find me a way to bring my never ending mountain exploration closer without closure. This particular bridge is at Rudraprayag, where river #Mandakini which comes from Kedarnath and River #Alakhnanda which flows from Badrinath to meet and greet for further journey together. Confluence of these two giant rivers is sacred place and is worshipped further as #Ganges once it meets river #Bhagirathi at #Devprayag. Thanks to Bro in our country #india because they are the strong pillars who made it possible here. And thanks to all those connector across the world in respective countries too. Can air purifiers and masks protect you from the poisonous Delhi air?
With worsening smog levels turning Delhi (NCR) into a virtual gas chamber, demand for air purifiers and masks is at an all-time high. Delhi experienced the worst smog in 17 years after Diwali, with PM2.5 readings, which have a safe limit of 60 micrograms per cubic meter, having gone up to an alarming 900 in some parts of the city last week. The situation triggered a spurt in the purchase of air purifiers and masks in the national capital.
“I bought an air purifier and masks primarily because of my children. My son and daughter were complaining about discomfort in breathing after Diwali night,” says Prasanna Singh, a resident of Alakhnanda in South Delhi. However, he’s clueless about the effectiveness of the masks and air purifier. He adds.
I don’t know whether they actually help in filtering out particulate matter and hazardous gases or not.
Prasanna isn’t the only one expressing concern over the quality of masks and purifiers; YourStory spoke to several people who purchased them – all seemingly unaware of the true effectiveness of the products.
When it comes to air purifiers, one tends to look at the lower and mid-range products in the market and get excited by the area covered and the lower prices (in the range of Rs 10,000-20,000). One must read the fine print – these devices have inferior motors and far inferior filters.
Things that matter while buying an air purifier
The first thing to look at in an air purifier is the filter. “Please do not fall for the easy to wash and insert specs. Air purifiers don’t work the same way as air conditioners; a washable filter may not be ridding your room of any pollutants,” says Pavneet Puri, co-founder of Kurin Systems.
The most necessary aspect of a filter is the pre-filter, which gets rid of pollen, dust, animal hair and volatile contaminants.
Currently, there are 100 air-product companies looking to grab a larger share of the market. Among the most popular brands in the market are Daikin, Blue Air,  Olans and Philips as well as more recent entrants like Xiaomi (which makes low-cost air purifiers); brands like Kent and Kurin are also planting their feet firmly in the market.
HEPA and CADR play major role in filtering fine particulate matter
High Efficiency Particulate Arrestance (HEPA) is a major necessity in getting rid of fine particulate matter. Most companies fail to mention the level of HEPA they use in their devices, thus failing to mark out the purity level. “Any device without HEPA should be considered a big ‘if’,” says Vikash Juneja, an ENT expert at a leading hospital chain. He cautions,
It is advisable to stay away from devices that boast of five to seven layers of filtration as these claims are mere marketing tactics that actually intend to mislead users.
The second most important factor is the CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) in air filters. Companies often try to fool customers by saying that their products can clean large areas; however, the product could in fact have minimal capacity in air dispensing. Looking for the CADR is key. Pavneet explains,
A purifier with a lower CADR (200-300 m3/h) will generate no change in some of the most polluted parts of our country; it would just serve the purpose of eye candy.
The question of masks
With a majority of schools making masks mandatory, the sales of pollution masks have jumped multifold in the past few days. “While generic pollution masks are seeing a jump in demand, Dettol Air Protect masks and N100s are the best sellers, followed by the Atlanta Healthcare Cambridge N99 masks,” says an Apollo Pharmacy executive in Gurgaon’s sector 25.
Last week, Amazon revealed that sales of pollution masks have jumped six times in the last few days, with customer demand shooting up to 13 times that of last year. The demand is largely driven by Delhi and adjacent cities.
At present, 90 percent of the masks worn by people are surgical masks. The initial object of these masks was to keep germs from a doctor, resulting from sneezing or coughing, away from a patient undergoing surgery. Expert reports find these masks to make no difference when it comes to pollution as the concerned particles are too fine to be caught by the masks. Harpreet Singh, senior research fellow at IISER, Mohali, explains.
The popular masks that were usually sold in hardware stores but are now being sold as luxury masks are N95, N99 and N100, which can only be worn with the help of a licensed practitioner and be fit professionally, to make sure there is a tight seal; even a minute leak renders it useless.
He further adds that they are absolutely useless on men with beards and are, when fitted properly, so uncomfortable that they can’t be worn for too long.
Some reports suggest that even though they can protect against very large pollutants, they literally have no effect on the mid-level and smaller poisonous particulate matter, which our air is abundant in. Harpreet adds,
Overall, all masks really do provide is peace of mind through the placebo effect.
