Deadpool Comic Book Recs Based On the Movies

Find these at your library, a website like Comixology, subscribe to Marvel Unlimited at Marvel.com for cheap bulk reading, or find them somewhere else online. (Feel free to message me for further clarification, links, or anything else! Also hit me up if there are financial concerns.)

“I love Deadpool’s protectiveness of Russell/children.” ❧ ❧ UNCANNY X-FORCE (2010-2012):: Deadpool 2 is an amalgamation of several story lines from the comics, including more than one about children, but this is the easiest source to refer people to. In this series, Deadpool is on a team (which includes Wolverine and Psylocke) formed to do the “dirty work” to protect mutantkind that the X-Men won’t. Each member has personal demons. The themes of the story are: “Do the ends justify the means?” and “Can people be predestined to be evil?,” especially as those questions relate to a child that many believe is destined to be evil. It’s not Russell, but I promise you’ll love him. (If you start and said arc seems to be over quickly, believe me, it isn’t.) Deadpool is so sweet in this. He protects children in every series but this is one of the most iconic examples.

“I love Deadpool’s interactions with Cable.” ❧ ❧ CABLE & DEADPOOL (2004-2008):: My friend, you are in luck, because there’s an entire 50-issue series about them and it’s hilarious, moving, and gay. (If you like it, there are side stories and many displays of their friendship in other series to move onto, as well. They’ve been BFFs for a long time now and this is where it all started.) The context of their relationship is completely different from the movie’s, but just as compelling. Read this for Wade (usually too cynical and self-loathing to believe in others and their causes) falling head over heals for Cable and his infectious idealism and savior-complex, and for Cable seemingly falling head over heals right back for someone that eagerly supports him against the odds. (Also featuring Domino!)

“I love Negasonic Teenage Warhead.” ❧ ❧ DEADPOOL & THE MERCS FOR MONEY (2016-2017, aka Vol 2):: (Also featuring Domino!) There are two runs with this title, so make sure you read the one that looks like what I linked. Negasonic Teenage Warhead was little more than a name before the first Deadpool movie, so this arc was actually inspired by the character you already know. This might not be the best series to start on if you haven’t read others because it’s a companion story and has a large cast of characters and comics-only concepts. However: NTW, Domino, and Deadpool are fantastic no matter what, and the relationship between NTW and Deadpool is actually the focus of this series.

“I just love Deadpool himself, his humor, and the ways he struggles with relatable things like self-loathing, suicidal thoughts, loneliness, and his ‘darkness;’ while longing to believe in something, be just a little better than he was yesterday, and keep some kind of broken family together.” ❧ ❧ DEADPOOL (2012-2015):: Of course, this point applies to basically every major Deadpool series (including Uncanny X-Force and Cable & Deadpool from above; C&D in particular), but this run is a relatively solid, balanced portrayal of Deadpool that covers a wide spectrum of emotions and tropes, AND it’s one of the easiest starting points. This run defines modern Deadpool. Everyone has a different favorite series, but everyone at least seems to agree that this author understands Wade well. One moment you get a dorky zombie president arc that may or may not appeal to you, the next you get a jokeless portrayal of PTSD or depression. It’s comedic, sometimes dark, sometimes absurd, and often disarmingly vulnerable and sweet. Just like in the movie, “family” is the ultimate theme. ((There’s a cluster of connected series here that tell a larger plot, so after reading this, you can move onto DEADPOOL(2015-2017) and UNCANNY AVENGERS(2015-2017), then finish the story off with the climactic DESPICABLE DEADPOOL(2017-2018).)) ❧ ❧ DEADPOOL (1997-2002):: This series will NOT appeal to such a wide audience, but it defined Deadpool as we know him in the first place, is another easy starting point, and has some of my favorite moments from any of his comics despite its flaws. Wade is a huge asshole in his series, but a complex asshole looking for redemption. It can be wacky, quite dark, and emotionally raw. The redemption themes were actually excellent and well-planned. Unfortunately, the writing and art styles are dated, the sexist and transphobic humor hasn’t aged well, and 9/10 doctors agree that issues #34-#64 are mostly just shit. The first writer and the last writer were great.

“I love Domino.” ❧ ❧ DOMINO (2018-):: Domino is a very different character in the comics, but if you’re flexible, she has a brand new solo series by fan favorite writer Gail Simone that we all need to support. (Simone wrote a fan favorite Deadpool arc and, elsewhere, has written about polyamorous lesbian relationships, so she’s cool.) Domino is also a recurring character in series like Cable & Deadpool, Deadpool (2008-2012), and Deadpool & the Mercs for Money Vol. 2., but I wouldn’t start any of those for her alone.

If you love Colossus and Deadpool’s interactions, unfortunately, you’re fucked, because that’s pretty movie-exclusive. (You do, however, have a wide range of choices from the X-Men comics if you just love Colossus himself.) For Deadpool interacting with more straitlaced characters who love and support him, try Cable & Deadpool or Deadpool (2012-2015) for Emily Preston.

If you love Vanessa, it’s complicated. She’s a totally different (and less significant) character in the comics so I wouldn’t start anything for her, but you can find her a bit in Deadpool (1997-2002)- which has also more ‘romance’ than any other Deadpool series- and in some earlier content. Unfortunately, the 90′s comics weren’t exactly spectacular with their female characters. I would actually argue, somewhat controversially, that his most wholesome romantic entanglement ever was with Rogue in Uncanny Avengers.

On diversity: Emily Preston is an amazing large woman of color and Ellie Camacho is precious and biracial, and they’re two of the most important characters in Deadpool (2012-2015) and the series that come after. Deadpool (2015-2017) has a future AU that’s led by Preston, Ellie, and a girl named Warda, arguably more than it is by Deadpool. Deadpool’s pansexuality is on display the most around Cable (see above), Spider-Man [Spider-Man/Deadpool (2016-); please note that Peter is an adult right now in the comics], and around random men and gender nonconforming individuals he meets throughout other series.

If you are thirsty for more substantial and requited LGBTQ+ content from Marvel, however, and don’t need it to come from Deadpool, I invite you to try Young Avengers Vol. 2 (they’re all gay or bi and say so, includes major m/m couple), Angela: Asgard’s Assassin and the following Angela series (lead biracial f/f couple, one of which is a transwoman), Uncanny X-Force Vol. 2 (led by women, includes a f/f couple and almost/briefly a polyamorous arrangement), Iceman (he’s gay), and Loki: Agent of Asgard (Loki is explicitly genderfluid). There are others but those are the ones I have the most experience with.

Auld Lang Syne

Some sentimental thoughts after the cut.

Two months ago I thought Rosalind Myers would be "just" a one night stand during Val's journey to find a cure; instead they celebrated the holidays together (1, 2). Rosalind reignited my passion for the game, and made me truly understand superlatives like "screaming crying throwing up" and wanting to eat glass.

I'll forever love Mitch. He helped pull me from the worst depression of my life, led me to Discord and Tumblr, and ultimately people who have become dear friends. My love for him prompted me to write a novel-length drama/romance smut about guilt and loss when I hadn't written in years. No one can ever supplant him or the place he holds in my heart.

All that said... Rosalind upended my world. She rewired my brain, I don't know how else to put it. Perhaps she's the result of a lifetime of latent lesbian attraction, perhaps it's being closer to that age myself and seeing such representation. She offers something that Mitch never can — a reflection of a woman of a "certain age". More shocking to me that I'm exploring a ship with someone other than Mitch is the subject herself. Ros is quite the opposite of Mitch, in nearly every way, but that allows me to explore different sides of Val through her.

2024 will be filled with Val & Ros, but that doesn't mean the end for Mitch & Val. Val's canon is still The Star ending, riding off into the sunset with Mitch and the Aldecaldos, plus there's the NOGLY sequel in the simmering stage; plus corpo Val's story is still being written. They'll still be around, just off doing their own thing in the corners of my subconscious, waiting for me to get back to their stories.

If you made it this far, thank you. If you've been a supporter of Mitch & Val, you have my undying love. If you've just joined for my brainrot-induced meltdown, welcome and I hope you enjoy my disaster bisexual. Whatever the case may be, thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I've been posting Ros and Val without any context or backstory because my brain has been going brrrrrrrr too much to write anything proper besides drabbles, and a couple of unrelated oneshots. I'm still figuring out their story but I've discovered some of the major beats and wanted to get it down for my future self, as well as anyone who's following along at home.

Their story follows PL fairly closely with a few places where I took some creative license. Val and Ros hook up at the safe house, and it takes Reed a little longer to get everything organized, giving them a few days together in Dogtown before Ros is spirited back to D.C.

Lemme just wipe off your cheek real quick...

Val needs family. She doesn't know it, but that's why she gravitated to Jackie and Lupe. It's why she calls Panam for help in her canon. Rosalind represents family in a different way. She's the mother who knows what's best, who cares about "her" people, and Val doesn't realize how much she needs that attachment. Several times during the rescue, Ros displays affection and concern for her—when the building collapses before the Chimera fight, during the Relic malfunction—and combined with the mission to keep her safe, it triggers something deep inside V, a loyalty that she doesn't understand.

Rosalind, on the other hand, just lost a lot of crucial advisors. While we don't know who was on board aside from So Mi, we can guess that there were high ranking staffers, such as communications, security, and campaign, plus her own personal assistant and Secret Service agent. She has no one. She is vulnerable with V, admitting that she doesn't know what to do, that she has no one; and V's response is to remind her that she's there, and she's determined to get her out of the situation. Loyalty is something Ros values highly, and here is this merc tasked with saving her, but who sees the situation as more than just another gig; who has become personally invested in protecting her. It's intoxicating to have someone who's unflinchingly loyal to you, and who has seen the real you.

Once they reach the safe house, things escalate because of the mix of all those emotions, plus all the adrenaline and endorphins from the escape. It becomes more than just a hookup, but because of their situations (Ros's, let's be real), they both know it's an untenable relationship. Their time is bittersweet because of that knowledge.

Just squint a little and the Dogtown apartment isn't that bad!

Later after the events of PL, they stay in touch, and there is affection between them still. Ros reaches out by text for fashion advice on the magazine shoot. They both agree that V isn't the right person for the job, but Ros knows she'll at least be honest. Later the acting campaign manager thinks having Ros take photos with the merc who saved her life in Dogtown would be good ad material, so Ros recruits V to the photo shoot.

Note: add at least one eagle for the "real" patriots

V uses the photo shoot to her advantage and successfully lobbies for the dinner date Rosalind promised. They have it that evening at Embers, as it's easy to secure for VIPs. Ros wants to know what V expects, because surely she can't think there is hope for a real relationship; but V wants whatever she can have. At this point, she knows she's crazy about Rosalind, while Ros is in denial herself over how much she cares about V.

“Where do you think this will go, V?” Rosalind's voice is soft and melodic. She doesn’t know, doesn’t care. She needs something, will take anything. “Hopin’ the first stop is my bedroom,” V says and gives her cockiest grin, but it quickly fades. “After that? Kinda up to you, yeah?”

They spend the night together and Ros decides to give it a try. They officially start seeing each other, but in secret and only when Ros has reason to visit NC. The new mayor provides a good excuse, so Ros visits under cover of extending diplomatic ties, and providing an opportunity for date night with her merc.

It's good to have powerful friends, like the new mayor of Night City.

After a few months of this, they slip up and the media catch wind that the President is spending time with the merc who saved her life in Dogtown. The campaign manager wants to use the media frenzy by spinning it as Rosalind recruiting V as her personal bodyguard, while still encouraging theories about their secret romantic relationship so the screamsheets will go crazy over it.

Eventually people are gonna notice when AF1 keeps showing up in NC airspace.

At that point V is ready to upend her life for Ros. She agrees to the plan and moves to D.C. The media eats it all up, and suddenly the only thing the NUS cares about is whether the President and her merc are fucking (they are). Eventually they transition to openly dating, and the President's approval rating shoots up by having a partner who humanizes her and makes her more likeable.
